Received much criticism in 1965 when it was revealed he had been a member of the Nazi party in Germany from 1929 until 1937. It then transpired that he had helped two Jews in Germany during World War II.

Due to his past membership in the Nazi party, Goldfinger (1964) was banned in Israel for several months until a Jew, Mario Blumenau, informed the Israeli Embassy in Vienna that his life and his mother's had probably been saved when Frobe hid them from the Nazis.

His voice was dubbed in Goldfinger (1964) by Michael Collins.

Is buried in the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Icking.

Son of Otto Johannes Fröbe, a shoemaker, and his wife Alma (d. 1972).

Had two sons, Utz (with Clara Peter) and Andreas Seyferth (son of Tatjana Iwanow, adopted by Fröbe in 1969), and one daughter, Beate Fröbe (daughter of his last wife Karin Pistorius, adopted by Fröbe in 1978).

Israel responded to Fröbe's admission that he had been a member of the Nazi Party by banning "Goldfinger" and all of his upcoming movies, including "Is Paris Burning?", in which he would portrayed General Dietrich von Choltitz. In addition, the Ministry of Justice said that if Fröbe visited Israel, it might prosecute him as a former Nazi Party member, the Jewish Telegraph Agency reported.

He was drafted into the German army in September 1944 after the theaters were closed, serving until the end of the war in Europe.

During the salary negotiations for his role titular role in the Bond classic Goldfinger, he insisted on 10% of the box office earnings which reportedly was turned down by the producers. With Goldfinger earning $125 million, that would have been $12.5 million. His actually remuneration, however was never made public.

When he was offered the part of Goldfinger his agent said that he was fluent in English but his vocabulary was limited to 'How do you do' and ;I m very pleased to meet you ' His voice was dubbed by Michael Collins.
