Spike Lee's '90s Masterpiece 'Do The Right Thing' Is Now On Netflix
Image
As the days are getting longer and the temperature is starting to rise, Netflix has decided to stream the perfect movie for heading into the warmer months.NYU legend Spike Lee's famous 1989 film — set on the hottest day in Brooklyn — Do The Right Thing, has found a streaming home on Netflix as of March 1, 2025. Written by the She's Gotta Have It director in less than two weeks, the film is a beautiful love letter to Brooklyn that simultaneously exposes the deep racial tensions of New York City. Lee also stars in the film as the story's middle man, Mookie, a person torn between his Italian-American employer and the Black residents of his community.

While the stylized '80s film might seem like a snapshot of a time gone by, the film's themes of racial relations in the American melting pot are more pertinent now than ever. The film has...

Cedric Yarbrough Explains 'Black Dynamite's Best Line was Improvised.
Image
Black Dynamite is nothing short of a cult classic. Starring Michael Jai White as the eponymous hero, the comedy is filled with dozens of memorable lines, which (like Borat), fans are still incessantly quoting to this day. While fiendish Dr. Wu's "zest for Kung-Fu treachery," "Who the hell is interrupting my kung-fu?" and "Haha! I threw that sh*t before I walked in the room!" are all classics, there is one line that stands above them all as the most quotable from the movie. But, according to Cedric Yarbrough, who delivered the line, it was completely improvised.

MovieWeb recently had the pleasure of speaking to Cedric Yarbrough about his biggest dramatic role to date in Clint Eastwood's Juror #2. But, we couldn't help but ask about his time on Black Dynamite during the conversation. When asked, "How many times do fans come up and say that they're 'declaring war on...

Ferris Bueller Spinoff - Producers, Director And More Info
Image
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is one of the best teen movies of all time, but it also (perhaps purposely) tells its story from a very privileged point-of-view. I adore the John Hughes classic, yet the last few times I've watched it, I've been struck by how terribly Ferris (Matthew Broderick) treats the customer service workers he meets throughout the film. It's all a part of his schtick; to craft the perfect day off, he has to get access to all sorts of fun stuff, and the quickest way to do that is by putting on a haughty, rich-white guy persona that he probably learned from his dad.

It may be blasphemous to even consider adding a new layer to a perfect Hughes-made story, but if someone's going to do it, it may as well be a filmmaker who's interested in approaching the material from a truly fresh angle. Enter: "Sam and Victor's Day Off,...

Martin Lawrence Debuted in One of the Greatest Movies of All Time
Image
Martin Lawrence began his career as a stand-up comedian in Washington D.C. and eventually transitioned into acting, making a name for himself. Lawrence's role in the monumental film "Do the Right Thing" marked his feature-film debut and helped launch him into superstardom. Despite not being the main character, Lawrence's involvement in "Do the Right Thing" alongside other talented actors was a key moment in his career.

During his father's service in the U.S. military, Martin Lawrence was born in Frankfurt, Germany before his family moved to America. They decided on the Washington D.C. area, where Martin proceeded to grow up specifically, in Landover, Maryland. Undersized as a kid, Martin was often involved in fist fights growing up, and during his teen years, he decided to hone his punching prowess in the realm of amateur boxing.

He even became a Golden Gloves contender, but transitioned to a new vocation fairly soon thereafter.

“Milk every single IP ever for every last drop”: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Spinoff Movie Has Fans Crying Foul for Very Valid Reason
Image
John Hughes’ 1986 classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off holds a revered place in cinematic history, cherished for its timeless charm and witty humor despite originating from the sitcom genre. However, the prospect of a spin-off film, tentatively titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off, has thrust the beloved original into the spotlight once more.

With Paramount Pictures at the helm, David Katzenberg is set to direct the anticipated follow-up.

Ferris Bueler’s Day Off

Yet, the reaction from die-hard fans of the original has been less than enthusiastic, casting doubt on the spin-off’s potential success. Critics argue that the decision to create a spinoff movie is motivated purely by financial gain rather than artistic integrity.

The sentiment among fans underscores apprehension that the spin-off could veer into the realm of disappointment, failing to capture the essence that made the original a cult classic.

1 Super Mario Box Office Record Proves Mario Is The King Of Video Game Movies
Image
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" broke multiple records, including the highest-grossing video game film and Illumination's highest-grossing movie. "Super Mario Bros.: The Movie" (1993) was the previous highest-grossing video game film, despite its critical failure. The potential sequel to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" could break even more box office records for the Mario franchise.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the biggest films of 2023, but it isn't the first project based on Nintendo's Mario that has broken box office records, proving why the video game franchise is the best at producing movie adaptations. The animated adventure comedy film, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel, premiered in theaters in April 2023 and was an immediate hit (although it received mixed reviews from critics). It ultimately grossed $1.362 billion at the worldwide box office and surpassed numerous established records, much to the surprise of many.

19 Post-Credits Scenes That Led to Nowhere
Image
Moviegoers are truly living in the golden age of post-credit scenes. What was once considered something of a novelty has been rendered a necessity in an era when the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other film franchises are expanding faster than Dwayne Johnson’s biceps in a 5 a.m. weight session. However, the concept’s origins date back further than the dawn of the superhero movie era or anything equally fast and furious. Back in 1966, in fact, Dean Martin was proving to the world that not all heroes wear capes or drive ludicrously fast cars; some prefer a suave suit and a scotch. He may have been known as a crooner, but in the 1960s, Martin also played the part of Matt Helm, a U.S. government counter agent in a series of films based on books by author Guy Hamilton.

Essentially pitched as a more laid-back James Bond, Martin’s first outing as Helm,...

Reflecting on John Lurie's Undervalued Career in Hollywood
Image
John Lurie is among the most underrated names in Hollywood history, with status as a household name eluding his grasp since he began working at the end of the 1970s. He first debuted as an actor in an unknown stint called Rome '78 (1978), followed by a featurette titled Men in Orbit (1979), which he also wrote and directed. He then starred in a minor Super 8 film called The Offenders (1980) before playing a Saxophonist in Permanent Vacation (1980). The latter film was written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, beginning the greatest partnership of Lurie's career.

The pair worked together on three more projects before the decade would come to a close. But of their other projects, Lurie would only act in two: Stranger Than Paradise (1984) and Down by Law (1986). In their other collaboration, called Mystery Train (1989), he'd compose the score. That's his other line of work re: the film industry. Score composition. He's...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Ferrari Sells For Large Sum
Image
The Ferrari from Ferris Bueller's Day Off has sold at auction for a large sum. Released in 1986, the classic coming-of-age comedy stars Matthew Broderick as the titular Ferris Bueller who, on a day off from school, embarks on an impromptu adventure across Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck). For their method of transportation for the day, the three borrow Cameron's father's Ferrari, eventually taking the car to a parking garage. In the decades since the release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which was written and directed by 1980s legend John Hughes, the Ferrari has lived on as an iconic movie car.

Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, the famous Ferrari featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off has sold at auction for the surprisingly large sum of 337,500. For context, the most expensive movie car, the 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt Swb California Spyder from the 1963 film Yesterday, Today,...

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Ferrari sells for 337K, and that’s without an engine
Image
The Ferrari 250 Gt California featured in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the more iconic vehicles of ’80s cinema, and someone just bought it for a whopping 337, 500 at auction. That’s quite the price tag, especially considering that the car doesn’t even have an engine and obviously isn’t driveable. Has anyone checked under the hood for a drawing of an engine?

The Ferrari isn’t a real one but was one of three replicas built for Ferris Buller’s Day Off, with this particular model being used as the “crash car” for the memorable scene in which it flies backwards out of Cameron’s father’s glass garage, plummeting to the ground below. After the movie, the Ferrari was rebuilt as a display piece. “It consists of a fiberglass body bolted to a rolling chassis with cosmetically finished interior with tan vinyl seats, tan carpeting, matte...

Cobra Kai creators have lots of ideas for spinoffs

Perhaps it’s the show’s YouTube origins, but I continue to be surprised by just popular Cobra Kai has become. The fifth season of the Karate Kid spinoff series recently debuted on Netflix, and although a sixth season hasn’t been officially announced, it’s expected that the series will return for more. But even when Cobra Kai does come to an end, its creators say that they already have ideas for potential spinoffs.

While speaking with GamesRadar, Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg said that expanding the franchise is definitely on their mind. “That’s what we love most about the franchise: anybody watching our show sees how many characters are entering in and there’s part of us that never wants to stop,” Schlossberg said. “We do have a place where it’s all going, but that doesn’t mean the world has to stop there. Ferris Bueller may be headed back to the big screen. Sort of.

A spinoff of the 1986 John Hughes teen comedy classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is being developed by Paramount Studios, according to a new report from Deadline. However, this new project won’t focus on the character famously played by Matthew Broderick. The Ferrari played a pivotal role in the movie, as fans will recall.

Ferris Bueller Spin-Off Movie Coming From Cobra Kai Creators, Will Follow The Valets From Original Film

Everything old is new again. Or, in this case, kind of old again since we're going back to the '80s. It has been revealed that the John Hughes classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is getting a spin-off film. While that, on its own, might raise an eyebrow or two, the actual pitch for the movie is more than a little surprising. Rather than focusing on Ferris, Cameron, or one of the other main characters, we are going to take a look at a couple of very minor figures in Ferris' legendary day away from school.

As reported by Deadline, the film is titled "Sam and Victor's Day Off" and is currently in the works at Paramount Pictures. So, who are Sam and Victor? Those who will recall the 1986 classic might remember that Ferris convinced Cameron to borrow his dad's cherished Ferrari. Well, this movie will focus on the valets...

John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins in Super Mario Bros. (1993)
The Story Behind the Super Mario Bros. Movie Extended Cut
John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins in Super Mario Bros. (1993)
There are some who would have you believe that Super Mario Bros, the 1993 live-action film based on the hit Nintendo franchise, is a bad movie.

The late, great, Bob Hoskins, who actually starred as Mario, was one of them.

“It was a fuckin’ nightmare,” Hoskins told The Guardian in 2007. “The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent…! Fuckin’ nightmare. Fuckin’ idiots.”

Time is a great healer though and while Hoskins continued to rank the movie as his worst long after he retired, the bold ambition and inventiveness of Super Mario Bros. has seen it undergo something of a critical reappraisal over the past decade.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Extended Cut with 20 Minutes of New Footage Arrives Free Online
Image
If your problem with the polarizing Super Mario Bros. movie was that it just wasn't long enough, then we've got some fantastic news for you. Showing that Zack Snyder isn't the only filmmaker who can release extended cuts of his movies, a group of fans have put out a new cut of Super Mario Bros. that can now be watched online. Called "The Morton Jankel Cut," the new version adds about 20 minutes of deleted scenes, upping the runtime from 104 minutes to 125 minutes.

Among the added scenes is an entire subplot that was axed from the original movie, following Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Leguizamo) competing with a plumbing company. Some of the other new scenes include Koopa (Dennis Hopper) drowning a henchman in slime and a scene of Iggy (Fisher Stevens) and Spike (Richard Edson) performing a rap at the end. Other scenes have been re-edited and extended.

Jennifer Grey, one of the stars of the 1986 John Hughes classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” on Saturday shared some behind the scenes, throwback photos from the set of the film that should give you a good wave of nostalgia.

The photos come ahead of Grey and the full cast of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” reuniting for Josh Gad’s quarantine YouTube series “Reunited Apart” on Sunday, which will reunite Grey with Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara to discuss the film.

The photos include a candid close-up of Ruck putting on his red hockey jersey that his character Cameron wears in the film, another of Grey posing with Richard Edson, who plays the garage attendant who goes on a joyride in Cameron’s 1961 Ferrari 250Gt California, and a third of Hughes chatting with the cast in a down moment on set.

‘Do the Right Thing’ Is Streaming for Free Online, Spike Lee to Hold Live Discussion
Image
Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” will be free to stream online until June 29.

The 1989 film is also the American Film Institute‘s pick this week for its Movie Club. It will be accompanied by a live conversation with Lee on AFI’s YouTube channel on Thursday at 8 p.m. Et.

AFI has partnered with Universal Pictures to make “Do the Right Thing” available for free across a variety of streaming platforms, including Apple TV, Vudu and Google Play.

The choice of film was undeniably influenced by the wave of nationwide protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd, as it explores themes of racial injustice and inequality.

“Do The Right Thing” takes place during a single summer day in Brooklyn, N.Y., in which racial tensions reach a boiling point, culminating in violence and death. It stars Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn,...

Spike Lee Shares New Short Film Uniting George Floyd and Radio Raheem Amidst Protests
Image
Director Spike Lee shared a short film with the world over the weekend. Lee has one question for everyone: "Will history stop repeating itself?" The death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police has sparked outrage across the United States and the world. The director sees some direct correlations to the past when looking at current events, which gave him the idea to splice footage of his 1989 movie Do the Right Thing with the deaths of Floyd and Eric Garner for 3 Brothers.

Eric Garner was killed in 2014 by the NYPD over allegations of selling single cigarettes. Like George Floyd, his death was shot on smartphones and shared with the world. In Do the Right Thing, Bill Nunn's Radio Raheem is also killed at the hands of law enforcement. Lee takes footage...

"Stranger Than Paradise" in One Shot
Image
One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise (1984) is showing May 15 - June 14, 2020 in many countries in the series "Outlaws and Misfits: Jim Jarmusch's Cinema of Outsiders."“We can bet that this film will be a flop,” blurbed Jean Eustache about his fellow post-New-Wave underachiever and pal Luc Moullet’s Anatomy of a Relationship (1975), an early exercise in self-scrutiny coauthored by Moullet’s partner Antoinetta Pizzorno. “That’s the best for me: I’ll plunder it more easily.” In comparable fashion, a 1964 commercial flop made by one of the masters of both Eustache and Moullet, Jean-Luc Godard—who incidentally had helped to launch the careers of both of these disciples—was successfully plundered by Jim Jarmusch twenty years later in Stranger Than Paradise. More specifically, Jarmusch appropriated a black-on-white principle exploited...

Review: Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" (1989); Criterion Blu-ray Special Edition
“The Long Hot Summer”

By Raymond Benson

I was living in New York City in the summer of 1989, when Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing opened and caused a sensation. I recall finding the picture exhilarating at first, and then ultimately very disturbing. Racial tension in the city had been high following several incidents of police brutality against persons of color on one hand, and the Central Park jogger case, which had occurred a mere three months earlier, on the other. Was the film a cautionary tale or a call to action, or both?

Now, thirty years later, Do the Right Thing is more relevant than ever. Its message aside, the filmmaking warrants the accolades it has received over the years, and its reputation has grown considerably as one of the great American motion pictures. While Spike Lee has gone on to make many excellent movies, including last year’s Oscar-nominated BlacKkKlansman,...

3 From Hell: Trailer Arrives for Rob Zombie Devil's Rejects Sequel
Tony Sokol Jul 15, 2019

Rob Zombie's Firefly family returns for a real day of the dead in the 3 From Hell trailer.

Free the three! Now we can have a real day of the dead. Just when you thought there was no justice in this world, the first full-length 3 From Hell trailer promises a bloodbath and a devil of a time. The odds were a million to one against Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley), and Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) surviving their standoff with the police at their last rampage, but with a little faith, nothing is impossible.

3 From Hell is a family movie. The Firefly family has a deadly tradition going back to 2003, with Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses making way for the 2005 sequel The Devil's Rejects. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the trilogy tells the story of Dr. Satan and his merry band of murderous misfits.

Jim Jarmusch: Ludlow Drifter
1. DRIFTDead Man (1995)Drift, like the sort of drift that whisks Johnny Depp along a Native American river to the afterlife, is the chief abstract quality that lends the films of Jim Jarmusch their poetic power. One wafts through a Jarmusch film never quite sure what end-goal he has in mind—if he has one at all. It’s a calculated and it’s a composed drift, one that’s easy and pleasurable to get caught up in—especially when one sees his films back to back, one after the other, misremembering whether this scene came from that film. Consuming these films in such a fashion, as I did recently at the Metrograph in New York City, reveals that Jarmusch’s master stroke is his disregard for the logic of plot mechanics (a key move for drifter filmmakers) in favor of serene gusts or currents that wind their way around hard,...

‘Do The Right Thing’: How Spike Lee’s Film Boosted the Careers of These 12 Actors
Spike Lee
Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” is 30 years old. Starring Lee himself, along with Danny Aiello (his role was originally offered to Robert De Niro), John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Bill Nunn, and Samuel L. Jackson, in a cast of around 30 characters, the film marked the feature acting debuts of stand-up comedians Martin Lawrence and Steve Park, as well as dancer/choreographer Rosie Perez. For several of the actors, it was the first or second of many collaborations with Lee, notably Turturro, who has appeared in as many as nine Spike Lee Joints. Most of the cast, which included some future stage and screen award nominees and winners, went on to have quite prolific careers, and have Lee to thank for helping to boost their work prospects. A few of them have sadly since passed. Here’s a look at where the actors who...

Review: “Stranger Than Paradise” (1984; Directed by Jim Jarmusch) (The Criterion Collection Blu-ray Special Edition)
“Deadpan Alley”

By Raymond Benson

The maverick independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch burst into art-house public consciousness in 1984 with his strikingly original slice-of-life comedy, Stranger Than Paradise, and we hadn’t really seen anything like it before. I remember going to see it at the little cinema across from Lincoln Center in New York City. As the guy interviewed in front of the theater in the supplemental documentary on this Criterion Collection doozy says, the queue of people to get inside was indeed full of “hipsters.” It was the picture to see if you were in tune to the downtown arts scene, avant-garde theatre/music/film/literature, and far-from-Hollywood-mainstream moviemaking.

For me, it was my favorite film of the year. Audience members who dug it found subtle humor in the three main characters’ seemingly aimless existences and motivations to live their lives in a spontaneous, who cares? fashion. Those viewers who...

Do The Right Thing Screens at The St. Louis Library April 6th – ‘The Films of Spike Lee’
“Let me tell you the story of Right Hand, Left Hand. It’s a tale of good and evil. Hate: it was with this hand that Cane iced his brother. Love: these five fingers, they go straight to the soul of man. The right hand: the hand of love. The story of life is this: static. One hand is always fighting the other hand, and the left hand is kicking much ass. I mean, it looks like the right hand, Love, is finished. But hold on, stop the presses, the right hand is coming back. Yeah, he got the left hand on the ropes, now, that’s right. Ooh, it’s a devastating right and Hate is hurt, he’s down. Left-Hand Hate KOed by Love!”

Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing (1989) screens at The St. Louis Public Library Central Branch (1301 Olive Street St. Louis). The film begins at 1pm Saturday,...

Rob Zombie Shares New Three From Hell Photos As The Film Nears Completion
In recent months, Rob Zombie has been taking to Instagram on a pretty regular basis to share images and updates for his next movie, Three From Hell. In just this last week, however, the director has seriously upped the frequency of his posts, bringing us one image for every day of the sound mixing process.

The fresh wave of photos started last week, with a pic from the mixing room that showed a fictionalized news report up on the screen. “Day 2” then followed with a photo offering another glimpse at Sheri Moon Zombie, who reprises her role as Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. After that, Day 3 brought us an image of Zombie regular Richard Brake as Winslow Foxworth Coltrane, followed on Day 4 by a shot of Jeff Daniel Phillips as Warden Virgil Dallas Harper. Lastly, a still of Do the Right Thing star Richard Edson dropped yesterday,...

Spike Lee
Spike Lee Promises Do the Right Thing Will Never Get a Sequel, Prequel or Remake
Spike Lee
Spike Lee is not making a sequel or a prequel to Do the Right Thing. The 1989 movie is considered to be one of the greatest of all time and is deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Whispers of a possible sequel started to get louder when Lee revisited the Mookie character for Red Hook Summer, but he has zero plans to make the sequel, though he wouldn't mind revisiting another one of his older projects.

While Spike Lee fans would love to see the return of Mookie and the rest of the characters from Do the Right Thing, he isn't open to returning to the movie, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. The movie already laid everything out the way it was supposed to be, and Lee already showed what Mookie is up to afterwards.
