Director Rob Reiner has never before made a sequel in his long career, and he hadn’t ever contemplated a follow-up to the most beloved rock comedy ever made, 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap. But then Harry Shearer, who plays Tap bassist Derek Smalls, fought a year-long battle to reclaim ownership of the film — and won. ”We sat and we said, ‘Well, what do we do?'” Reiner says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “We got the rights back. What do we do with this? And so at first we said,...

In the spring of 1997, Deadheads tuning in to The Grateful Dead Hour, the nationally syndicated radio show, heard a rare if disconcerting treat. Over two installments, host and Dead historian David Gans played the complete tape of Jerry Garcia’s last show with the band from two years before, at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium. “I found it difficult to listen to,” Gans admits of that tape, “but there’s historical value in the final performance.”
However, in terms of any official unveiling, it’s never been heard since.

Malcolm McDowell is keeping it real when it comes to his thoughts on Emily in Paris.
The 82-year-old A Clockwork Orange actor revealed in a new interview that he doesn’t actually enjoy the hit Netflix series, which just so happens to star his daughter-in-law, Lily Collins.
Keep reading to find out more…
“To be honest with you, it’s not my kind of thing, and Lily knows that,” he told People.
Still, he had nothing but praise for Lily, who married his son Charlie McDowell in 2021.
“I’m the biggest fan of my daughter-in-law. I think she’s absolutely one of the great actresses. She has such a beautiful quality.

Sacré bleu! Malcolm McDowell says he’s not a fan of Emily in Paris, even though his daughter-in-law, Lily Collins, is the star of the show. “To be honest with you, it’s not my kind of thing, and Lily knows that,” McDowell told People recently. McDowell is related to Collins through the marriage of filmmaker Charlie McDowell, his son with ex-wife Mary Steenburgen. Collins, the daughter of musician Phil Collins and former teacher Jill Tavelman, married the younger McDowell in 2021, and the spouses welcomed their first child via surrogacy earlier this year. Despite his distaste for Emily in Paris, McDowell only had rave reviews for Collins. “I’m the biggest fan of my daughter-in-law.

Here at JoBlo, we love the eighties. Heck, we even have a Facebook page and a YouTube channel called Loving the 80s— that’s how much we’re obsessed with the decade. However, when you think about all your favorite eighties movies, I’m willing to bet that for the majority of them, there’s a song that immediately comes to mind. That’s because the 80s were the heyday of movie soundtracks. Nowadays, movies just don’t have super popular songs associated with them the way they used to (which is why the Best Original Song category at the Oscars is so horrendous). It’s a shame, because there’s something about a hit song and a movie together that’s just indelible.
But there are two kinds of eighties movie soundtracks. There are those like Against All Odds, where the theme song “Take a Look at Me Now...

“I knew I had done something remarkable,” John Fogerty says of his years with Creedence Clearwater Revival in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “In a sense, I did what the Beatles did, but I did it all by myself. I didn’t have two other guys to write songs with me.”
For his new album, Aug. 22’s Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival years, Fogerty rerecorded classics (from “Born on the Bayou” to “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”) with his sons Shane and Tyler filing in for the long-since-split band.

They’re the intimate, private moments that fans of classic rockers never get to see. Steven Tyler, hammer and nails in hand, building a doghouse for rescued animals. Mick Jagger, Elton John, and Rod Stewart harmonizing at Ozzy Osbourne’s memorial service. Jagger and Tyler cheering up a bedridden Phil Collins in a hospital. Bruce Springsteen treating health care workers to a rendition of “If I Should Fall Behind” while visiting his wife, Patti, in a facility.

When Ozzy Osbourne brought Metallica on tour in 1986, he noticed his young opening act blasting Black Sabbath in their dressing room and covering his old band’s songs in soundchecks. Osbourne’s first assumption, he said later, was that Metallica were mocking him. He was stunned to learn they were actually displaying their hero worship, and trying to coax him onstage with them.
As discussed in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Osbourne — who died July 22 at the age of 76 — could be touchingly insecure for a beloved and wildly influential metal legend.

Jethro Tull vocalist Ian Anderson discussed the physical challenges of singing at an older age in a new interview, but, in doing so, managed to belittle Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger as “a shouter.” He also offered up a somewhat callous comment about Phil Collins, Billy Joel, and Ozzy Osbourne (although it should be noted that the interview was conducted shortly before Ozzy passed away).
Back in 2020, Anderson revealed he was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Copd), and reasoned that his “days as a singer are numbered.” However, he has continued to perform since then, and is in the midst of a European tour with Jethro Tull, with dates scheduled well into 2026.
In a video conversation with Now Spinning Magazine (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Anderson talked about the physical demands of singing and playing the flute at age 77, remarking, “It depends what you do. You can be physically animated,...

A representative for Phil Collins is addressing speculation about his health.
It has recently been speculated that the 73-year-old musician has been receiving hospice care following a hospitalization.
In a new statement, Phil‘s rep said that the “In the Air Tonight” singer’s recent hospitalization was not due to any terminal illness.
Keep reading to find out more…The rep clarified to People that Phil is currently in the hospital, but is recovering from knee surgery.
Phil‘s rep also said that the rumors of him being in hospice are “completely incorrect.”
In his documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, which was released late last year, Phil revealed that he can no longer play the drums due to health issues.
“I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles,” the Grammy winner said, noting that not being able to play is “still kind of sinking in a bit.

Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” is considered one of the greatest rock songs of all-time — an epic multi-movement masterpiece that clocks in at a whopping eight minutes in length.
Though it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when “Stairway” is mentioned, John Bonham’s controlled and tempered drumming is foundational to the song’s arrangement — as Drumeo highlighted in a new deep dive video.
In the informative clip, Drumeo host Brandon Toews and a couple famous drummers walk viewers through Bonzo’s mechanics and playing techniques on “Stairway,” with Toews playing through the arrangement to shine a spotlight on the kit-work specifically.
For example, Toews breaks down the subtleties of Bonzo’s playing during specific parts — such as when he accents the guitar riffs with the tom drums during the famously odd-timed bridge, a part that stumps even a virtuoso like Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy.

A new era of Who history began earlier this month with the launch of the Song Is Over farewell tour in Italy. The show marked not only the start of the band’s supposed last tour, but also the unveiling of new drummer Scott Devours. He took over from Zak Starkey after a bizarre and protracted battle that played out in public, and placed Devour in a pretty awkward position.

A representative for Phil Collins is denying a rumor that the legendary drummer is in hospice care, however, did confirm that he is currently in the hospital after undergoing knee surgery.
The unsubstantiated rumor that Collins, 74, is in hospice care went viral on social media last week, but a representative for the drummer confirmed to TMZ that the claim is untrue.
Collins has been open about his health struggles in recent years. Nerve damage stemming from a 2007 spinal injury has prevented him from drumming, and in an interview earlier this year, he said he had considered recording new music but was unable to do so because he’s been “very sick.”

“Real quick,” Mk.gee said to the crowd at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday, kicking off a rare bit of stage banter. Mk.gee, real name Mike Gordon, is a man of few words — he doesn’t do many interviews, and can usually be seen onstage showing off his unique style of guitar-playing beneath a fog machine and strobe lights, his wavy brown locks covering his face. So when the 28-year-old does speak, listen up. It’s about to get real.

Never let it be said that South Park is afraid of controversy. The 27th season of Comedy Central's animated institution kicked off on Wednesday night, and creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone went straight for the corporate jugular.
Just days after settling a contract dispute with their parent company, Paramount Global, to the tune of $1.5 billion, the duo made time in the season premiere for instantly viral scenes involving President Donald Trump — whose administration just settled its own lawsuit with Paramount as the embattled entertainment company tries to complete its long-awaited merger with Skydance Media.
Entitled "Sermon on the Mount," the episode finds the current Potus literally in bed with Satan as part of a storyline that finds Jesus arriving in the Colorado town as part of a push to save the local schools from "wokeness." “It was our Woodstock, but better,” Nile Rodgers asserts in Live Aid: When Rock ’n’ Roll Took on the World, referring to the all-star charity concerts broadcast around the world 40 years ago. Boomers may quibble, even with the presence of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and a reunited Led Zeppelin at those shows. But when it came to ambition, funds raised, and global cooperation, Rodgers has a point.

Sometimes, bad ideas sound like good ones when you’re all hopped up, Charlie Sheen-style. That was the explanation that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker gave David Letterman about their hilariously ill-advised appearance at the 2000 Academy Awards.

A song from their movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, was nominated that year. At first, Parker and Stone were reluctant to attend the lame Oscars ceremony at all. “And then we were like, well, how can we not go to the Academy Awards?” Parker told Letterman. “So, we decided to go in dresses.”
Boy, did they. Stone pulled off an iconic ensemble made famous by Gwyneth Paltrow, while Parker draped himself in Jennifer Lopez’s famously revealing gown.
It seemed like a funny idea the month before, when Stone and Parker ordered the costumes. The afternoon of the event, however, reality crept in. “We had a limo,...

Sabrina Carpenter is as good as any current pop star at cultivating controversy and attention — the latest evidence was the now-subsided furor over her absurd Man’s Best Friend album cover, which seems to take cues from Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove. “She’s leaning into it and laughing about it at the same time,” says Angie Martoccio, who profiled Carpenter for her recent Rolling Stone cover story — which revealed that image aside, the singer’s true obsession is music.

It's great news that Rick Moranis will be returning to acting for a "Spaceballs" theatrical sequel. Even if the material turns out to be stale, Moranis won't be, as he's been semi-retired from acting since 2008 to spend more time rainsing his kids as a single dad. The "Ghostbusters" franchise may not have been able to bring him back, but those movies are getting pretty crowded, anyway, and the lure of the Schwartz is strong. We're mostly used to Moranis playing likable, relatable characters, but it's his most famous villain role of Dark Helmet that we have to thank for what may (and should) be a full-on Moranissance.
Considering how beloved the comedic actor is, readers might be surprised to know that his filmography is relatively short. Eliminate the occasional outright dud, and there are barely a dozen great movies left. Naturally, we're ranking them. Here is our countdown of the 12 best Rick Moranis movies.

In terms of success, longevity and ubiquity, LeBron James is like the Amazon.com of the NBA. It’s only fitting for him to be the face of Prime Day 2025.

The folks at Drumeo are putting Nic Collins through the wringer. First, they challenged him to play Opeth’s mammoth “Ghost of Perdition” as he heard it for the first time, and now they’ve made him learn and play Rush’s absolutely epic “2112” suite in one sitting.
Nic, who is the son of Genesis legend Phil Collins, was tasked with playing all the drum parts to the “2112” suite, which comprises the entire first side of Rush’s 1976 album of the same name. The original track is 20 minutes long, consisting of the parts “Overture,” “The Temples of Syrinx,” “Discovery,” “Presentation,” “Oracle: The Dream,” “Soliloquy,” and “Grand Finale.”
In the Drumeo video, Nic has to play it all, minus “Discovery” (which doesn’t have any drums), and agonizes over the task ahead of him, exclaiming, “Why do you have to be so good, Neil?,” referencing legendary late Rush drummer Neil Peart (No.

The Season 36 finale of The Simpsons, “Estranger Things,” found Bart and Lisa abandoning Itchy & Scratchy after discovering that the show now makes products for babies — which somehow wasn’t a problem for the franchise that once gave us Simpsons-brand teething toys.

While she wasn’t always the biggest fan of the ultraviolet cartoon, Marge starts to worry that scrapping their shared TV time will result in Bart and Lisa growing apart. And this mournful anxiety is expressed in song form, thanks to Grammy-winning singer Sarah McLachlan.

Nic Collins, the son of the legendary Phil Collins and a very talented drummer in his own right, is the latest musician to be challenged by Drumeo to perform a song as he hears it for the first time. In Nic’s case, he was given the brutal task of drumming along to the epic Opeth track “Ghost of Perdition.”
As we’ve seen in Drumeo’s previous “For the First Time” videos — like Chad Smith crushing Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill” and Mike Portnoy taking on Tool’s “Pneuma” — Nic is played the Opeth song minus a drum track, and has to figure out his own drum parts.
As Nic is being played the 10-minute opus, he breaks out into a sweat, exclaiming, “Dude, how long is this song? I don’t even remember how it started,” eliciting laughter from Drumeo host Brandon Toews. Nic, who is a...

This year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will induct acts including Soundgarden, Outkast, and the White Stripes — but some huge names from the ballot didn’t make it, most notably Mariah Carey (for the third time!), Oasis, and Phish.
Carey is an undisputed pop legend; Oasis recorded some of the greatest songs of the Nineties and are about to embark on the most-anticipated reunion tour in years; Phish are, well, Phish, a band that’s created a universe of its own, playing arenas decades into their career. So what happened?...

For more than a decade, heritage rock artists have been juicing their live shows by recreating their vintage albums start to finish. That list includes Neil Young (Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), Bruce Springsteen (The River), U2 (The Joshua Tree), Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation), and Steely Dan (every one of their records). This fall, Patti Smith joints the list when she’ll be playing all of Horses to mark its 50th anniversary. An entire Canadian company, Classic Albums Live, is devoted to this trend, with a group of largely unknown musicians covering all of Rumours,...

Hardcore Wicked fans have a lot of unshakable opinions, including the widespread belief that the Wizard’s big moment in the first act, the talky “A Sentimental Man,” is the Broadway show’s single worst song. But when Jeff Goldblum stepped in as the Wizard for director Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster film version, he managed to salvage the song in fans’ eyes, playing up the character’s toxic blend of smarm and charisma. “I’ve had a lot of positive anecdotal response like that,” Goldblum says in the new...

Harmony Korine is hard to pin down: Stylistically, ideologically, and even rhetorically. While leading a Q&a with him before a mostly teenage and 20-something crowd at the Ringling College of Art and Design at the Sarasota Film Festival on April 12, that quickly became apparent.
Like he was once again appearing on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” as he did frequently in the 1990s, Korine gave some amusing answers — maybe non-answers.
What inspired his latest film, “Baby Invasion“? “I’d seen this Phil Collins video, and I just remember watching it, and I had been drinking Mountain Dew and eating Skittles, and I was playing a lot of Tetris, and the movie just came to me.”
What made him fall in love with Florida, where he’s made his recent movies and has headquartered his company Edglrd? “Strip malls. I was investing in this company that just builds strip malls,...

Chappell Roan has taken the title of “The Giver” to heart, gracing fans with album-level promo (Billboards! A secret phone number! An instantly controversial Call Her Daddy interview!) for the Shania-esque stand-alone single. In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield join host Brian Hiatt to break down Roan’s strategy, even as they try to figure out whether a new album will be out this year — and if the fan-favorite ballad “The Subway” will be her next single. Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.
There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

Metallica’s members are all in their 60s, and their music is way more physically demanding than anything their classic-rock forebears have had to tackle onstage — but lead guitarist Kirk Hammett tells our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast that he doesn’t see retirement on the horizon.

The Doctor is back, and from the looks of it, better than ever in Season 15, the trailer for which was recently released (seen below), and revealed some of the fun we can expect come April 12 on Disney+. Starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the long-running British sci-fi series has been a hot topic as of late, with everything from its ratings, cast, and showrunner coming under scrutiny. Still, the epic series has managed to survive it all, and if the new trailer is any indication of how things are progressing, it appears as if Doctor Who won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
“I am the last of the Time Lords,” Gatwa begins in the Doctor Who Season 15 trailer, which is set to the tune of Phil Collins' Take Me Home. "I'm from a different planet. An evolved life form. And I have waited for the day of your arrival.

Concord has officially closed on its deal to acquire music distribution platform Stem, the companies announced Monday.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported on the deal earlier in March. Neither Stem nor Concord disclosed financial details of the agreement, though they specified the deal encompasses only Stem’s distribution business, not Stem’s parent company, Stem Disintermedia, or its financial services company Tone.
Speaking with THR, Stem founder and CEO Milana Lewis and Concord Label Group chief executive Tom Becci say the companies had been casually talking for years, but that they began discussing the acquisition in earnest last July.
Concord is one of the largest independent music companies in the industry, with its portfolio including record labels such as Rounder, Loma Vista and Pulse Records, as well as a publishing arm whose catalogs include Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kiss, Daddy Yankee and Phil Collins.

Kevin Bacon had an eclectic list of movies on his resume early on, from Animal House to Friday the 13th to Diner, but there was nothing like Footloose. But as it turns out, he would rather not cut loose or kick off his Sunday shoes. So please, Louise, don’t play that damn song near him!
Kevin Bacon recently revealed that the title song from Footloose haunts him at weddings, and while DJs often get requests for certain songs, the actor has made it a habit to ask them not to play “Footloose.” “My worst nightmare is to be at a wedding and the DJ puts on the music. They always start out being about the bride, and then there’s alcohol involved. And by about 10:30, the song comes on, and suddenly the wedding becomes about me getting out and dancing. How does a truly terrible song end up an otherwise flawless album? Blame ego-appeasing band-politics concessions, drug-fueled studio experiments, songwriters working through a few too many personal demons, and artists who just ran out of songwriting steam a little too soon. Or maybe it all comes down to bad judgment.
In any case, Rolling Stone‘s Andy Greene recently found 50 examples of classic albums with at least one bad song, and he goes through his entire list with host Brian Hiatt on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now.
