When it came to taking on the role of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, actor Austin Stowell had his work cut out for him as the star of the hit prequel series NCIS: Origins. For over two decades, Mark Harmon played the older version of the character, and Stowell still feels like he'll never get fully comfortable in the role.

Stowell and co-star Mariel Molino fielded some questions about NCIS: Origins while at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, per Deadline. Concerning playing Gibbs, Stowell shared that the role is no less nerve-wracking now than it was at the start, even with the success of the first season. While he likes the challenge as an actor, feeling he can actually "thrive" in these instances, Stowell still feels like the role belongs to Harmon.

"NCIS: Origins" is a change of pace for CBS' long-running procedural franchise. As demonstrated by shows like the canceled "NCIS: New Orleans" and the short-lived "NCIS: Hawaii," the saga previously set its spin-offs in the present day but changed up the locations, leaving the door open to some exciting crossovers. "Origins," on the other hand, travels back to the 1990s and focuses on the Naval Investigative Service (which was later restructured as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) during a time when some familiar characters were still rising through the ranks -- and dealing with some serious personal drama outside of work.

The prequel aspect of the show allows "NCIS: Origins" to answer some long-lingering questions fans of the property have been asking for years, such as what actually happened to Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wife and daughter prior to "NCIS" and why he came up with some of his famous rules.

Controversial exits, shock values, and getting written off the script were common practices in the 2000s when shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS were airing on live television.

These shows are designed to leave questions unanswered for as long as possible, bringing viewers back time after time with teases and cliffhangers before finally explaining themselves with a flashback episode or big reveal. It's a tried and true formula; the mystery is sweet, but the emotional payoff (and the "I told you so" that comes with a correct guess) is sweeter.

Unless that show is "NCIS," a series that has been on seemingly since the dawn of time but didn't actually answer vital questions about the death of its protagonist's first wife until 2024. The CBS drama about a naval crimes investigative unit wasn't actually the show that broke the news, either: Mark Harmon left "NCIS" in 2021, but his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, lives on in the form of Austin Stowell, who now plays a younger, greener version of the agent on the prequel series "NCIS: Origins.

NCIS: Origins works for so many reasons: focusing on young Leroy Jethro Gibbs when NCIS still went by Nis, exploring his grief after the recent loss of his wife and daughter, and kickass ’90s needledrops.

But the thing about Origins is that it doesn’t feel like Gibbs’ show at all.

And shockingly, that’s the best thing about it.

The series manages to utilize the stalwart, most renowned character of the NCIS universe, Gibbs, as a Trojan Horse to tell Mike Franks’ story, and I love every damn second of it.

NCIS: Origins star Kyle Schmid teases how the upcoming Christmas episode will be crucial for Franks and Gibbs. Schmid plays Special Agent Mike Franks in the first NCIS spinoff that's also a prequel, focusing on the early years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) as he attempts to assemble a team in the very early 1990s.
