When it came to taking on the role of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, actor Austin Stowell had his work cut out for him as the star of the hit prequel series NCIS: Origins. For over two decades, Mark Harmon played the older version of the character, and Stowell still feels like he'll never get fully comfortable in the role.
Stowell and co-star Mariel Molino fielded some questions about NCIS: Origins while at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, per Deadline. Concerning playing Gibbs, Stowell shared that the role is no less nerve-wracking now than it was at the start, even with the success of the first season. While he likes the challenge as an actor, feeling he can actually "thrive" in these instances, Stowell still feels like the role belongs to Harmon.
“I was scared for so many reasons,” Stowell explained about joining the show. “There were just so many first times.

The first season of NCIS: Origins ended on a potentially sad note for young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell), as he endured the shocking scene of watching his confidante, Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), bleeding out in an overturned car. The relationship between the two characters has been lovely to see all season, with the pair feeding off one another positively as the duty of upholding the law gets ever more complex. For those familiar with the NCIS franchise, Lala is a name that had not come up until the prequel series came about. With minds now turned to the coming season, and Lala's death not officially confirmed, there are suggestions that the character might not be dead when the show returns for a second season.

The juxtaposition of the horror and Western genres is an unusual one, for sure. But there’s something rather enjoyable about seeing the two seemingly opposed genres skillfully fused. Organ Trail and Bone Tomahawk are just a couple of examples of the kind of magic that stems from the effective use of this unholy union. We recently noticed that a forgotten horror Western is streaming on Prime Video and that’s the kind of good news we cannot keep to ourselves. The film we’re referencing is Alex Turner’s Dead Birds.
Dead Birds didn’t make a huge splash upon release and still remains somewhat under-seen more than 20 years later. The film does, however, have a small cult following and even managed to win over a few critics. Perhaps some of the appeal comes from the creatives involved. You’re Next scribe Simon Barrett penned the script for this genre mashup.

Summer breeze may or may not blow through the jasmine of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's mind, but, regardless, the I Know What You Did Last Summer director simply could not convince one fan-favorite actress to return in the upcoming legacy sequel. In fact, Robinson practically "harassed" Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role from the 1997 film, despite the fact that Ben Willis, a.k.a. the evil Fisherman (Muse Watson), killed off her character Helen Shivers in the original movie. Robinson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
"I tried relentlessly, and she's dead. I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead. I tried to pitch some crazy sh*t too. I was like, 'What if it's like you weren't dead, and you're actually alive, but in hiding?' And Sarah's like, 'I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.

Freddie Prinze Jr. & Jennifer Love Hewitt Are Back In I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot Trailer
In a cinematic landscape rife with legacy horror sequels — from Scream to Saw X, Final Destination: Bloodlines to the recently announced Scary Movie 5 — it takes something truly hooky to stand out and capture our collective attention. In the case of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Do Revenge director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's upcoming resurrection of the iconic 90s slasher series, we're getting something that's hooky not only because of its stellar cast of up-and-comers (Madelyn Cline! Jonah Hauer King! Chase Sui Wonders!) and franchise legends (Freddie Prinze Jr.! Jennifer Love Hewitt!), but also because its killer quite literally has a big ol' fish hook to shank our secret keeping cadavers-in-waiting with. Such fun! Speaking of, here's a brand spanking new trailer for the hotly anticipated legacyquel:

Given the juggernaut that the "Scream" franchise became, it feels like that property is the obvious and uncontested champion of the wave of teen horror films that it spawned. Not so fast, Ghostface — while other contenders like the "Urban Legend" and "Dracula 2000" movies petered out long ago, the Fisherman manages to keep coming back for more.
That's right: Another Kevin Williamson-penned horror film, 1997's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has spawned two sequels, a reboot series in 2021, and a legacy sequel due out in 2025 (at the time of writing). While that's not yet enough to rival "Scream," it's impressive that the franchise is far from dead, especially considering how many bizarre twists and turns the property's continuity has taken over its relatively short lifespan. The central hook of the first film — a group of teens cause and then cover up an accidental death, only to find...

"NCIS: Origins" is a change of pace for CBS' long-running procedural franchise. As demonstrated by shows like the canceled "NCIS: New Orleans" and the short-lived "NCIS: Hawaii," the saga previously set its spin-offs in the present day but changed up the locations, leaving the door open to some exciting crossovers. "Origins," on the other hand, travels back to the 1990s and focuses on the Naval Investigative Service (which was later restructured as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) during a time when some familiar characters were still rising through the ranks -- and dealing with some serious personal drama outside of work.
The prequel aspect of the show allows "NCIS: Origins" to answer some long-lingering questions fans of the property have been asking for years, such as what actually happened to Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wife and daughter prior to "NCIS" and why he came up with some of his famous rules.

Controversial exits, shock values, and getting written off the script were common practices in the 2000s when shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS were airing on live television.
As a result, several fan-favorite characters would end up getting killed or written out of the script for certain reasons. Well, I still hold a grudge against NCIS for killing a character in season 8 of the show.

NCIS has introduced several memorable characters throughout its long run, including Lauren Holly’s Jenny Shepard, who joined the crime drama in Season 3. One of the standout elements of her time on the show was her complex and emotionally charged relationship with Mark Harmon’s Special Agent Gibbs.
However, Jenny Shepard’s story came to a tragic yet poignant conclusion in Season 5. Behind the scenes, it was the result of Lauren Holly beginning to lose interest in both the show and her character, leading to her eventual departure.

Network TV dramas love suspense. These shows are designed to leave questions unanswered for as long as possible, bringing viewers back time after time with teases and cliffhangers before finally explaining themselves with a flashback episode or big reveal. It's a tried and true formula; the mystery is sweet, but the emotional payoff (and the "I told you so" that comes with a correct guess) is sweeter.
Unless that show is "NCIS," a series that has been on seemingly since the dawn of time but didn't actually answer vital questions about the death of its protagonist's first wife until 2024. The CBS drama about a naval crimes investigative unit wasn't actually the show that broke the news, either: Mark Harmon left "NCIS" in 2021, but his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, lives on in the form of Austin Stowell, who now plays a younger, greener version of the agent on the prequel series "NCIS: Origins.

NCIS: Originscontinues to go beyond just being a prequel story focusing on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) becoming the iconic NCIS character fans love. With its timeline set when the federal organization was still going by Nis, it shows the beginnings of what will eventually become NCIS. NCIS: Origins also introduces original characters like Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) and Bernard "Randy" Randolf (Caleb Foote) and gives them meaningful storylines that audiences want to invest time in. Along with following a young Gibbs, the series also features a young version of Muse Watson's Mike Franks, this time played by Kyle Schmid. In NCIS, Franks and Gibbs have a strong friendship that is always enjoyable to watch. While it seemed that Franks was the reason Gibbs joined Nis, NCIS: Origins Episode 10 shows the real reason he did and how the duo weren't the best of friends from the first time they met.

Jennifer Love Hewitt discussed the wildly inappropriate comments some men would say to her after she appeared as a teenager in the classic horror film, I Know What You Did Last Summer. A loose adaptation of the late author Lois Duncan’s 1973 young adult novel of the same name, Hewitt portrayed Julie James in the 1997 film and its follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). The actress spoke about dealing with those troubling sexual comments while appearing on Mayim Bialik's Breakdown podcast. Hewitt said:

Mike Franks is one of the most iconic secondary characters in NCIS, and there are several episodes that are essential to watch to truly understand him. Franks, played by Muse Watson in the flagship series, was instrumental in shaping Mark Harmon's Gibbs as an NCIS agent. While he appeared sparingly throughout NCIS, Franks often joined the NCIS characters as they investigated difficult cases, using Franks' insight as a former agent and mentor to help them.
Since appearing in NCIS, Franks has become a major character in the NCIS: Origins story, which looks at Gibbs' life upon joining Nis in the early 1990s. The prequel has given a deeper look at Franks' character as well as his close mentorship-turned-friendship with Gibbs. While the NCIS spinoff has been vital in expanding his storyline, the foundation of Franks' character was built in NCIS, with some episodes highlighting his enthusiastic personality more than others.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is about to get a new sequel with a new cast and its two main legacy characters, through which it’s officially fixing the second movie’s ending, but risks repeating a huge legacy sequel mistake. Warning: Some Spoilers lie ahead for I Know What You Did Last Summer!
The '90s marked a revolutionary shift for the horror genre as filmmakers started to focus on the slasher formula, thanks in large part to Scream's success. One of the keys to that movie's success was writer Kevin Williamson, who not only went on to pen its direct sequel, but also found success with 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. Unfortunately, that success is far more of a financial one than a critical one, and some 27 years later, it's pretty clear why reviewers weren't so kind to it.

Slasher movie fans, rejoice! Following hot on the heels of this morning's exciting news that McKenna Grace has joined Scream VII's cast, this evening brings with it a long-expected but finally confirmed casting announcement for another legacy horror franchise reboot — namely, Do Revenge director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. Per Deadline's reporting, Og star Jennifer Love Hewitt has closed a deal to return for the upcoming movie, which Kaytin Robinson has written with Sam Lansky.
Love Hewitt — whose Julie James we last saw still being stalked by hook-wielding menace Ben Willis (Muse Watson) at the end of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer — will be joined by her on-screen husband Freddie Prinze Jr. in the movie, who was confirmed to be reprising his role as Ray Bronson some time ago. NCIS has been around for two decades, so naturally, there have been a few tragic deaths over the years. Every long-running show has to contend with cast turnover, and NCIS is a procedural in which characters put their life on the line on a weekly basis. It doesn't always go according to plan.
We as fans are always going to be shocked by a show's decision to kill a beloved character, but there was a rare instance in which an NCIS writer was equally shocked! Jesse Stern, a former NCIS scribe, recently went on the podcast Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch and admitted that he was completely taken aback when he was told to write a death scene for Special Agent Mike Franks (Muse Watson).

The 1990s weren’t the strongest decade for horror movies, but they still gave us some unforgettable classics that ultimately shaped the genre’s future. Struggling to match the creativity of earlier eras, the '90s moved away from the gritty style of the '70s and '80s and tried new approaches. The decade leaned heavily into psychological horror and self-aware storytelling, with standout films like The Silence of the Lambs and Scream redefining the realm of horror.
While there was a fair share of uninspired sequels and repetitive slasher films, the 1990s marked a shift in how audiences experienced fear, giving way to suspense, atmosphere, and clever twists over pure shock value. During the '90s, horror reached more people through mainstream hits, proving it could be both a box office success and win critical praise. Despite its challenges, the era proved to be a key turning point for horror movies,...

The latest installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise will finally be able to explain the cliffhanger ending from the series' second movie. The canonical status of I Know What You Did Last Summer's reboot has been confirmed. The new movie will follow up on the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. It will ignore the 2006 film I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which featured a completely different cast and was poorly received.
As with any reboot or sequel, I Know What You Did Last Summer risks misinterpreting the previous movies, which have gained a cult following over the past 26 years. Stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have already discussed returning to the cast of I Know What You Did Last Summer, making it hopeful that the new film will be loyal to the original series. Warning: Spoilers ahead for NCIS: Origins season 1, episode 8, "Sick as Our Secrets."NCIS: Origins episode 8 focuses on Caleb Foote's Randy character and explains the special agent's more profound connection to Austin Stowell's Leroy Jethro Gibbs. NCIS: Origins' cast of characters includes familiar faces from NCIS, like Roma Maffia's Vera Strickland and Muse Watson's Mike Franks. Diany Rodriguez and Kyle Schmid revived the characters for the prequel series, but the show has a few new faces, too. Foote's Special Agent Benjamin "Randy" Randolf is an entirely new character to the NCIS franchise. So is the story's unadvertised muse, Mariel Molino's Lala Dominguez.
In episode 8, "Sick as our Secrets," the NCIS: Origins story finally highlights Randy, revealing the new father was initially assigned to protect Gibbs' wife and daughter. The outing establishes how Randy's baby was sick. The father was strung out and exhausted, causing him to...

Episode 7, "One Flew Over," reveals how dearly Franks cares for the rookie Nis agent after what happens to Gibbs' wife and daughter in NCIS.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 7 “One Flew Over.”] NCIS: Origins has featured some firsts and moments fan expected for Gibbs (Austin Stowell)—such as stopping an elevator and even some woodwork, making a birdhouse in this episode—and in the latest episode, it recreates a major part of his past: what sets him on the path to kill the man who murdered his wife and daughter. On NCIS, we saw briefly the moment that Franks (Muse Watson on the mothership) left the file on Pedro Hernandez (Shannon and Kelly’s killer) on his desk for Gibbs to read. NCIS: Origins expands that scene in “One Flew Over.” There were “a lot” of discussions about recreating that, Stowell told TV Insider when he recently stopped by. Warning! This article contains spoilers for NCIS: Origins episode 6, "Incognito."NCIS: Origins has revealed that Mike Franks went back on his word in NCIS in an amusing change of character. In NCIS: Origins, Franks is the leading Special Agent of Nis and the direct superior officer to Gibbs. He is also instrumental in forming the newbie's future NCIS career, which is helped by the fact that Franks has a soft spot for Gibbs and refers to him as "probie," a reference to his probational status with the team. As established in the flagship, Franks will also act as a strong mentor for Gibbs throughout the NCIS spinoff.
While NCIS: Origins episode 6 featured less of Franks than usual, the episode did reveal valuable information about his character. While investigating a murder, the Nis team learn that the victim had stolen secret military information and was planning on selling it to a high bidder.

The series follows Austin Stowell as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, detailing the special agent's past as he was getting his sea legs at Nis. Gibbs' career change from Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant to rookie Nis agent happened after the death of his wife and child, which occurred at the end of his deployment in Operation Desert Storm. The NCIS: Origins story explores the tragedy that causes Gibbs to join the agency and reveals heart-wrenching details from his past.
Since it is a prequel series, there's a lot we already know about the fates of certain NCIS: Origins characters. The series revives Muse Watson's Mike Franks, played by Kyle Schmid in NCIS: Origins. Likewise, Special Agent Vera Strickland (Diany Rodriguez) is a character who hails from the flagship.

Sylvester Stallone is one of the biggest action movie stars on the planet and has an astounding career playing brave heroes, skilled assassins, and even traumatized veterans. While Stallone gained his breakout role as the underdog fighter Rocky Balboa in his famous sports franchise, following this success, he carved out another career as a true action movie star chasing bad guys and bringing crooks to justice. Spurred by his longstanding rivalry with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone has continually pushed himself toward more over-the-top, chaotic, and wildly entertaining action movie releases.
Many of Stallones best films were in the action movie genre, as he excelled in the Rambo franchise and portrayed countless heroes across prison movies, thrillers, sci-fi films, and more. With an often underappreciated skill for portraying tough guy characters as well as layered and noble lawmen, Stallone has proved his skills by acting opposite everyone from Antonio Banderas to Robert De Niro.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6 of NCIS: OriginsWith NCIS: Origins covering Leroy Jethro Gibbs beginnings with the federal organization back when it was called Nis, it shows a period barely talked about in NCIS. The prequel series also stars younger versions of characters featured in NCIS like Mike Franks, Jackson Gibbs, and Vera Strickland. By having these characters, NCIS: Origins gets to show how these relationships in Gibbs life get to where they are in NCIS.

The NCIS franchise has continued its dynasty, striking more gold with NCIS: Origins.
In fact, the compelling prequel has scored a full-season order, to my absolute delight, at a time when the television landscape and its offerings seem bleak.
NCIS: Origins works for so many reasons: focusing on young Leroy Jethro Gibbs when NCIS still went by Nis, exploring his grief after the recent loss of his wife and daughter, and kickass ’90s needledrops.
(Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS)
But the thing about Origins is that it doesn’t feel like Gibbs’ show at all.
And shockingly, that’s the best thing about it.
The series manages to utilize the stalwart, most renowned character of the NCIS universe, Gibbs, as a Trojan Horse to tell Mike Franks’ story, and I love every damn second of it.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from the two-part premiere of NCIS: Origins on CBS.
The origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs has finally begun: CBS kicked off its much-anticipated prequel Monday from veteran NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, as well as CBS Studios. And as promised, Mark Harmon returned to both narrate and to appear fireside as he journals about his life.
Here, Monreal and North breakdown the two-part premiere that follows a young Gibbs (Bridge of Spies‘ Austin Stowell) as he starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling Nis Camp Pendleton office.
Deadline How much does the average viewer of NCIS know about Leroy Gibbs?
Gina Lucita Monreal I think it varies, but our hardcore fans know a lot. We’re trying to strike a balance between those hardcore fans and hopefully new fans who know nothing. That’s the line we’re walking.

“NCIS: Origins” may not stray far from the DNA of its flagship, but the updates to the formula make revisiting Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ past a “darker” chapter for the beloved CBS franchise.
The new series turns the clock back to 1991, when Gibbs first joined NCIS as a special agent at Camp Pendleton. The two-hour premiere follows as the stoic agent steps into his own with a new team, while mourning the loss of his wife and daughter. Harmon narrates every episode, dropping insight into the mysterious character’s mindset for the first time — and dropping hints as to what may be coming next.
For co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, the Gibbs-centered prequel series offered the right opportunity to tackle a more “character-centric” version of the crime procedural.

For a leading man in a massive series, Mark Harmon got to play Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs as a bit of a man of mystery on the “NCIS” franchise mothership series, at least up to the point that it had to exhaust whatever it was that put that haunted look in his baby blues. As portrayed by the actor over 22 seasons, Gibbs never did stop being the strong, taciturn type, but at the close of that tenure it didn’t feel like could possibly be much backstory left to mine, given the myriad flashbacks to the trauma that led the lawman to a seemingly permanent state of loner-dom. So when a prequel series for Gibbs was announced early this year, a series fan might’ve wondered: Is there any aspect of his pining for his dead wife and daughter that’s been left remotely unplummed?
But, as it turns out,...

NCIS: Origins executive producer and narrator Mark Harmon explains why his son, Sean, isn't returning as Young Gibbs. Set to premiere on CBS in just a matter of days, NCIS: Origins is the first prequel in the history of the NCIS franchise. It follows Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the early 1990s. Although Sean Harmon is involved behind the scenes in the new show, he won't be appearing on camera. Instead, Bridge of Spies actor Austin Stowell steps into the lead role.
Speaking with Variety, ahead of the premiere of NCIS: Origins on Monday, October 14, at 10 Pm Et on CBS, Harmon clarified why Sean won't be reprising his role as Young Gibbs in the prequel. Even though Harmon played Gibbs in the main series, and has been credited with coming up with the pitch for NCIS: Origins, the older Harmon clarified that his son is focused on different things and enjoys executive producing.
