The Philip K. Dick story "The King of the Elves" was first published in an issue of Beyond Fantasy Fiction, way back in September of 1953. The story involves a lonely, borderline-impoverished Colorado gas station owner named Shadrach who, while enjoying the solitude one night, notices that some elves are standing outside (!). He invites them in and gives them food and shelter, learning that one of the elves is their King. When the King dies in bed, however, the other elves — in exchange for Shadrach's kindness — nominate the old man to be their new monarch. He is told that he must come up with new strategies to help them in a long-fought war with a kingdom of Trolls.

On the one hand, I respect anyone who can devise a formula that works for them and for an audience, and while I wasn't a huge fan of the film, the first "Horrible Bosses" seemed to connect with audiences three years ago. The appeal of that film, and one that seems like it's pretty smart in its universal appeal, is that we have all had bosses we hate at some point. Watching characters we like get one up on people we hate is something that seems enormously easy to enjoy. My problem with the first film was that it felt like it never really embraced its premise. It wasn't mean enough, and I guess I hoped we'd see them cut loose in "Horrible Bosses 2" and really go for the dark humor the first film promised but soft-pedaled. "Horrible Bosses" was a fantastic concept. Get three strong comedians (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis), give them brutally bad bosses and cast them with some pretty big Hollywood names we don't often see playing these types of characters (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey—who we now know as the horrible politician from “House Of Cards,” but it had been a long time since he’d played someone so heartless and cruel). It had a solid director, Seth Gordon, the filmmaker behind the awesome documentary "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" (though the maybe not so awesome comedy "Four Christmases"). It had a script so good (by Michael Markowitz, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein) that it attracted all this top talent (including Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) and it was all set to be the best comedy we’d all seen in ages, right? Mike Markowitz made it big on the writing front last year with the ridiculously funny Horrible Bosses and after a long career of writing various TV shows, Markowitz is joining the animated realm of cinema, as Deadline reports he has been hired to write the second animated feature for Tradition Studios.

Brad Lewis (Cars 2), the former Pixar Pdi/Dreamworks filmmaker-producer-actor, has been set to direct the feature, which is being kept under wraps while being in development at the studio’s San Francisco facility. However, we do know that this project will be the follow-up to the company’s first animated feature, The Legend of Tembo, which was directed by Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams and penned by William Schneider.

Chicago – The summer of the R-rated comedy, which was So clearly inspired by the success of “The Hangover” and its sequel, was an interesting case of the law of diminishing returns. If you over-saturate a market, critics and viewers will turn away. By the time that “The Change-Up” and “30 Minutes or Less” thudded into theaters, we all remembered why they don’t make that many R-rated comedies in a year any more — most of them are dumb. Looking back on the trend, two films stand out as the R-rated comedies of Summer 2011 — the widely-beloved (and a bit overrated) “Bridesmaids” and Seth Gordon’s very-funny and consistently-entertaining “Horrible Bosses,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD.

As is cleverly referenced within the film, “Horrible Bosses” is basically a riff on Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (or “Throw Momma From the Train” for younger viewers) in the world of modern workplace nightmares.

Work long enough in these United States and eventually you’ll have one: a horrible boss. Maybe they dangle a promotion in front of you with no intention of letting you have it or just treated you as subhuman, but no two horrible bosses are the same. To capitalize on this idea, Horrible Bosses mixes elements of Office Space and Strangers on a Train in a comedy with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis suffering at the hands of Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell. For what seems like an incredibly simple concept, Director Seth Gordon and Writers Michael Markowitz and John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein have managed to milk some pretty rich laughs even as the story runs along a very obvious track.

Reviewing a comedy is one of the hardest things to do in the film journalism world.  Unlike action movies or drama flicks, a comedy is completely dependent on one thing, and one thing only; did you laugh?  It could be terribly directed and have a piss poor plot but, if you laughed enough, none of that would really matter anyways.  So going into this review of Horrible Bosses, know this; I cannot understand your sense of humor.  To do that, I imagine it would take weeks of long, hard psychoanalysis.  But I do know mine.  And for what it's worth, Horrible Bosses tickled my funny bone just right.

As Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman) relates in an early voice-over in Horrible Bosses, his grandmother came to this country with only $20 to her name and after working hard her whole life died with not much more. The reason she didn't get ahead, Nick opines, is that she didn't kiss any ass and that's not a mistake that he's interested in repeating. It’s hard not to be proud of John Francis Daley in a way not dissimilar to how you would for your little brother. After all, he wasn’t just Lindsay Weir’s (Linda Cardellini) nerdy, sweet, but often-tortured little brother Sam on the beloved Freaks and Geeks. For fans of the criminally short-lived series, Daley’s Sam resembled the little brother we had or wished we had, because he perfectly encapsulated what it felt like to be a younger sibling.

Horrible Bosses is going to invite comparisons to just about every other movie about rotten workplaces, but it acts best as a corollary to Office Space. Not because it's on the same level as Mike Judge's modern classic, but because both films are perfectly of their time, capturing a snapshot of the working world as it was or is. Judge's film was about a man oppressed by boredom and forced to work overtime to update his company's software for Y2K, a laughably empty threat even when the movie was made and a nice representation for the kind of banal paper-shuffling forced upon the protagonist. Yet the working men of Horrible Bosses aren't fighting apathy, but evil, and they're roped to their jobs because of the recession. Chicago – There’s a theory that a film that should be judged based on how well it succeeds at what it attempts to do. If it’s a comedy, does it make you laugh? “Horrible Bosses” has some issues but it is an undeniably funny movie. With stellar comic timing from the entire ensemble and a dark streak of edgy humor with just enough wit to make it not seem cruel, this is one of the straight-up funniest movies of the year.

I'm getting a little sick of reading (and saying and writing) the phrase "the plot is just a clothesline to hang the gags on" in reviews of Hollywood comedies. Yes, laughs are the most important thing in a comedy, but if laughs are the only thing in a comedy, the film might be funny, but that's all it will ever be. Seth Gordon's "Horrible Bosses" represents a welcome return to plot-based comedy. This is not a movie in which the plot is just a clothesline to hang gags on. There's an honest-to-God story here, and the more twists and turns it takes the better and funnier "Horrible Bosses" gets.

2011 has been somewhat of a stale year for good movies from my perspective, but Horrible Bosses is starting off the second half of the year in the right direction. I went in having very high expectations, possibly the highest I’ve had for a movie this year and they were beyond exceeded. I can’t overstate how much I enjoyed this, and am hard pressed to think of a comedy I’ve enjoyed as much in recent years. The theatre I was at seemed to agree as well. Audible laughter throughout the film, sometimes louder than the film itself. I don’t think I went more than a minute or two without laughing.

A few years back, it was reported that one of Disney's upcoming animated films, an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's King of the Elves, had been shelved because Disney wasn't satisfied with their own CG movies. Well, Variety is now reporting that the project is back on again at Walt Disney Animation for a late 2013 release. But the big reason it's back is because the script is getting an overhaul by Michael Markowitz, a TV writer credited as one of the screenwriters of Horrible Bosses, hence the timing on this news since that hits theaters this week. Chris Williams, co-director and writer of Bolt, will also be "shepherding" the project. Philip K. Dick's King of the Elves short story is a fantasy about an average man living in the Mississippi Delta, whose reluctant actions to help a desperate band of elves leads them to name him their new king.

The work of cult author Philip K. Dick has seen mini-resurgence in Hollywood of late. The Adjustment Bureau (an adaptation of one of his short stories) was on the big screen a month or so back, and a remake of Total Recall (from another short, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale) is currently in production. Now word comes through from Variety of yet another story being primed for production with the unlikeliest of bedfellows.

According to the site, Disney has obtained the talents of scriptwriter Michael Markowitz (Horrible Bosses) to pen King of the Elves, with a potential release date at the end of 2013 ready being mapped out. First published in 1953, it tells the story of an old man who grudgingly agrees to help a group of elves to fight off a troll and by doing so is awarded the titular position.

Disney's animated fantasy film King of the Elves is getting a second wind.  According to Variety, Horrible Bosses co-writer Michael Markowitz has come aboard to write the new animated feature.

The studio is hoping for a holiday 2013 release for its new animated film based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick. 

The plot follows an average man living in the Mississippi Delta who reluctantly helps a band of elves.  To thank him, they name him their new king.  The man finds himself caught on a journey filled with danger and evil forces, but it's also a chance to bring meaning back into his life.

Chris Williams is overseeing the project for Disney.

Walt Disney Pictures has selected to move forward with two fairly different projects: A computer-animated adaptation of author Philip K. Dick’s fantasy short story, King of the Elves, and a movie based on its famous Matterhorn theme park attraction (tentatively titled The Hill).

King of the Elves has been officially on the docket for the Mouse House since 2008, but is now prepped to begin moving forward after a lengthy delay. The Matterhorn film, on the other hand, is just the newest Disney ride-turned-movie project on the horizon.

"Horrible Bosses" scribe Michael Markowitz has been set to pen the latest draft of the script for "King of the Elves" at Walt Disney Animation Studios says Variety.

An adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story, it follows a band of elves and one dwarf living in the Mississippi Delta who tap a human as their king after he saves them from an evil troll.

"Bolt" co-director Chris Williams is shepherding the project. The project was originally targeted for a release next year until Pixar took over Disney and sent the project back into development to flesh out the story.

'Elves' is now aiming for a late 2013 release following on from "Monsters University" opening that summer. John Lasseter and Chuck Williams are producing.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has breathed new life into King of the Elves and has hired Michael Markowitz (Horrible Bosses) to pen the newest version of the script.  The film is an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story about "a band of elves and one dwarf living in the Mississippi Delta who tap a human as their king after he saves them from an evil troll." Elves was initially set for a 2012 release with Brother Bear's Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, but when Pixar's John Lasseter took over animation in 2006 it went back into development. Some movies are born easily: they represent a whole bunch of factors like script, talent and money that happen to be in the same place at the same time. Others aren't born so easily, and lurch towards screens in fits and starts. Case in point: Disney's animated adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story, King of the Elves, and Sony's attempt to make a new movie out of the '80s toy line and cartoon Masters of the Universe. Both films might be picking up steam again, however, after falling off the radar for a while. First up is King of the Elves, which was originally announced in 2008. Disney is still moving forward with their long-in-gestation animated film King of the Elves. Variety reports that the studio has tapped Horrible Bosses scribe Michael Markowitz to write the latest version of the screenplay. Based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick, the film tells the story of a group of elves and one dwarf living in the Mississippi Delta. After a human saves their life from an evil troll, they name him their king. The film was initially under the guidance of Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker (Brother Bear), but when Pixar guru John Lasseter became chief creative officer of the animation department, the film was put back into development. Chris Williams (Bolt) is sheparding the project, with Lasseter producing. The plan is now to set King of the Elves for a holiday 2013 release as a companion to that summer’s Monsters University from Pixar.

Back when Pixar chief John Lasseter swept into Hawaiian-shirted power at Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2006, a variety of animation projects, including Tangled and what would end up as Bolt were shoved back into development and re-worked before release. Horrible Bosses writer Michael Markowitz has signed on to develop the script for animated King of the Elves, for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The project is an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story about an average man living in the Mississippi Delta, whose reluctant actions to help a desperate band of elves leads them to name him their new king. Joining the innocent and endangered elves as they attempt to escape from an evil and menacing troll, their unlikely new leader finds himself caught on a journey filled with unimaginable dangers and a chance to bring real meaning back to his own life.

King of the Elves is eyeing a holiday 2013 premiere.

King of the Elves comes to theaters November 2012 and stars Josh Bednarsky. The film is directed by Aaron Blaise, Robert Walker.

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston were together to visit Inside the Actors Studio last night, but today she had leading men Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Jason Bateman along with director Seth Gordon and screenwriter Michael Markowitz to chat about the dark comedy out on July 8. Jen joked about the less-than-ideal management and jobs from her past and confessed that she didn't really mind tackling the dirty-talking role of Julia Harris, a dentist who doesn't seem to respect the boundaries of workplace sexual harassment. Some of her funniest scenes are with Charlie, who didn't have to do much acting when it came to being shocked by Jen's character. After MTV aired "Fright Night" and "The Art of Getting By" clips as parts of MTV "Sneak Peek Week", a fresh clip from "Horrible Bosses" gets its turn. In the preview, Charlie Day, Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis are on their stakeout. Being well-planned, things don't go as expected when a car suddenly gets out of a house, sending the trio into panic mode.

Earlier on the same day, a new trailer from the comedy film has been unveiled as well. Although most of the scenes look similar to the snippet previously released, this trailer still contains a new footage where Jennifer Aniston puts a man's hand on her breast.
