‘Beyond the Gaze’ Trailer: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Doc Pays Tribute to the Annual Issue’s Creator, Jule Campbell
Image
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue was such a juggernaut by the late 2000s. It not only was the single best-selling issue across all of magazine publisher Time Inc. each year, but it was also largely responsible for funding most of Sports Illustrated’s editorial operations for the rest of the year. No wonder: The annual issue had launched, or furthered, the careers of supermodels Cheryl Tiegs, Kathy Ireland, Elle Macpherson, Paulina Porizkova, Tyra Banks, and Roshumba Williams in the 1970s and ’80s.

All of them appear in Jill Campbell’s new documentary “Beyond the Gaze: Jule Campbell’s Swimsuit Issue,” the trailer for which IndieWire is exclusively debuting below.

The same last name there is not a coincidence. Jill Campbell, the acclaimed documentarian of “Mr. Chibbs”, about the basketball player Kenny Anderson, is the daughter-in-law of Jule Campbell, the founding editor of the Swimsuit Issue at Sports Illustrated in the 1960s,...

“He was very macho”: Mark Wahlberg Made Kate Moss Extremely Uneasy in Topless Ad That ‘Preyed’ on Her Vulnerability
Image
Remember that iconic Calvin Klein ad from the ‘90s starring Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg? While it might have been the cat’s meow in the world of fashion advertising, it turns out that not everything is as it seems.

Kate Moss in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie | Credits: Fox Searchlight Pictures

Indeed, Moss’ experience on that shoot wasn’t a walk in the park. In a candid moment during her appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, she opened up about the emotional toll the shoot took on her, revealing that she has lingering negative memories of working with Wahlberg.

At just 17, she found herself in the thick of things with the then-21-year-old actor, whom she described as “very macho” and surrounded by a large entourage, emphasizing how the focus was squarely on him.

“I’ll be damned if my baby starves”: Tyra Banks’ Mom’s Powerhouse Move When Model Was Asked to Lose Weight Will Horrify Yolanda Hadid
Image
Tyra Banks’ success in the modeling industry is news to no one, the former America’s Next Top Model host became one of the handful of Black models to achieve the status of a Supermodel. Recently, she created headlines by reappearing on the ramp for the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Fans were awed at her mother, Carolyn London’s stern response to her daughter’s agency when they advised her to lose weight. Recalling her mother’s support throughout her fashion model journey, Banks praised her presence of mind and body-positive mindset. This is quite in contrast to Yolanda Hadid, who came under fire for her toxic attention to Gigi Hadid’s diet.

An icon of body positivity: Tyra Banks’s unrelenting supporter

The modeling industry is infamous for its toxic and often unrealistic beauty standards for models. This subject often brought big names under the radar, especially Victoria’s Secret...

Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen Will Have to Take the L on This One – Kathy Ireland is Still the Richest Supermodel of All Time Years After Her Retirement
Image
It sounds baffling that supermodels can make truckloads of big bucks from all the modeling and brand endorsements (mainly) that they do in return for maintaining their physique, composure, health, and multiple other factors related to their own physical well-being. Nonetheless, stunners like the 61-year-old Kathy Ireland have proven that it is possible.

Kathy Ireland. | Credits: @kathyireland/Ig.

This stands true considering how she is still the richest supermodel in the world of all time, even decades after her retirement from modeling back in the early 1990s. In fact, Ireland has led such a successful career by playing her hand in other fields that her net worth has actually surpassed even that of supermodels like Kate Moss and even Gisele Bündchen!

These Are The Richest 'Dancing With The Stars' Contestants Of All Time
Image
Dancing With The Stars is readying itself to begin Season 33. Over the years, the show has seen a plethora of celebrities. The competition show pairs the celebrity contestant with a professional dancer and eliminates at least one couple every week until one couple is left to win the title and the mirrorball trophy. The show casts athletes, Bachelor Nation favorites, Olympians, actors and singers popular from years ago, those who have had controversy and need to fix their reputation and more.

However, despite DWTS being known for casting more C and D-list celebrities, more recently the show has gotten more popular stars. And just because they aren't popular right now doesn't mean they weren't ten years ago. Some of them have racked up a pretty impressive net worth, including their paychecks from the show.

While the pros have gained nobility over the years, the competition is really about the celebrities.

The Greatest Character Actors Of All Time, Ranked
Image
What are the defining traits of a character actor? Why is a shapeshifting virtuoso like Daniel Day-Lewis considered a full-blown movie star, while a chameleon-like genius like Giancarlo Esposito is routinely relegated to supporting player status? As previously discussed here at /Film, there are multiple factors at play: box office, deeply ingrained cultural notions of physical attractiveness, distinctive utility, and the Borgnine Paradox.

It should come as no surprise that my solo endeavor to arrive at a solid-ish definition of "character actor" is not the first in the history of the written word. There have been many, many attempts by whole groups of esteemed journalists to get at some kind of reasonable understanding of this term/concept, and, having read more than a few of them, I can assure you that there is no hard-fast rule. You could call just about everyone outside of Britney Spears a character actor --...

The 107 minute film, produced by Eue Documentaries and Red Barn Productions, recently wrapped production. The director is currently submitting the doc for consideration at various fall film festivals.

During her 32-year tenure as founding editor of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, Campbell was charged with the task of creating a yearly swimsuit issue that did not come across as gratuitous. The docu investigates how she managed to control the photographs that...

Sharon Stone says famous Basic Instinct scene tame by today’s standards
Image
It’s considered one of the most paused moments in movie history, the scene in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone – as Catherine Tramell, a revamp on the femme fatale – uncrosses her legs during an interrogation, revealing she has nothing on underneath. It made Sharon Stone and pushed boundaries on what could be shown in mainstream cinema. But today? That moment in the 1992 icy-cold thriller may not even register as risque to many.

Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Sharon Stone said that Basic Instinct scene pales in comparison to what can be found while flipping through the channels. “You see so little of anything in this film, actually. And now we see men with full frontal nudity on television. But still we look at that film as such a scandalous, controversial moment in filmmaking. And really, it’s quite benign by comparison to almost anything you see now.

Backstage at the 2022 Critics Choice Documentary Awards: Show gets upgrade to NYC Times Square
Image
“Good Night Oppy” lived up to its name. The space doc about rovers on Mars took the top honors at the 7th Annual Critics Choice Awards in midtown Manhattan. The move from Brooklyn (where the show had been produced for the last six years) was an upgrade. “Take a look around the Edison Ballroom,” ‘Oppy’ filmmaker Ryan White said. “It was a theater for over 60 years and did ‘Oh Calcutta’ for 13 years. Totally nude with sex-related sketches written by Sam Shepard, Samuel Beckett, Jules Feiffer and John Lennon.” Okay, yes, this place in the Edison Hotel is cooler.

Comic Wyatt Cenac hosted. “Keep making good stuff,” he told the audience. “So next year we don’t have to turn this thing into an awards show for TikTok explainer videos.” The star power was amped up for the new digs. Paul Shaeffer gave “The Beatles: Get Back” its Best Musical Doc award.

‘Rick and Morty’ Review: ‘Rickdependence Spray’ Is an Odd Tale Filled with Self-Inflicted Mistakes
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Rick and Morty” Season 5, Episode 4, “Rickdependence Spray.”]

Some “Rick and Morty” episodes feel especially like a writers’ room dare. Maybe a wild, tossed-off idea that, the more people joke about it and add on bizarre details, starts to take shape into something workable.

That “writing challenge as story idea” format can flourish in prosperous ways. (“What if Rick got turned into a vegetable and became an action hero?”) Other times, it’s a recipe for a “spot the reference” casserole that the show has fallen back on of late. “Rickdependence Spray,” the fourth installment in a to-this-point-impressive Season 5, arrives as a 23-minute sex joke with some grafted-on, sci-fi thriller trappings and some other familiar coating for good measure. Aside from the 1996 blockbuster that gives the episode its title, there’s War Room antics, an “Empire Strikes Back” visual gag, and a light dusting of “Lord of the Rings” machinations. Credit...

‘Rick and Morty’ Gets Messy With Killer Space Semen in ‘Rickdependence Spray’
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read until you have watched “Rick and Morty” Season 5, Episode 4, “Rickdependence Spray.”

Whether intentional or not, it’s an interesting bit of timing that — considering the inspiration for the title — “Rickdependence Spray” is the “Rick and Morty” Season 5 episode that airs the week after Independence Day. That’s not to say that airing this episode on the Fourth of July would have made its existence make much more sense, there’s just a certain synergy that would have come with it. Instead, “Rickdependence Spray” seemingly exists in its own little world, both in terms of scheduling and the very premises and execution.

Sometimes it comes across like Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon, and the rest of the “Rick and Morty” writers’ room create episodes specifically just to see how inaccessible they can be to outsiders, or to see just how poorly they will land if they were...
