Patty Maloney Dies: Billy Barty Co-Star, Syd & Marty Krofft & ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ Actress Was 89
Image
Patty Maloney, an actress whose 30-plus year career included memorable turns on Little House on the Prairie, Syd & Marty Krofft’s Far Out Space Nuts, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and the Star Wars Holiday Special, has died. Her passing was confirmed via a post on the official Syd & Marty Krofft Facebook page. She was 89.

Maloney stood 3 feet 11 inches and weighed about 60 pounds. Her stature and pantomime stills meant she often worked in costume. And work she did, with memorable roles on some of the most popular TV shows of the ’70s an ’80s.

On her first series, the actress played the furry and funny Honk on the Kroffts’ Far Out Space Nuts, a character who spoke only in horn-like honks. The show was a Saturday morning staple for kids in the ’70s, especially via syndication. She also appeared on 13 episodes of The Krofft Superstar Hour and other of the duo’s shows.

Get the story of Jason Goes to Hell directly from the makers in the trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday
Image
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was a bonkers sequel that took the simple masked slasher movie franchise to new heights (or new depths?). The early 90s film that attempted to end the franchise was hated by critics and very divisive with fans. However, now you can get the full story of what the creative people were thinking as director Adam Marcus recalls being a bright-eyed, fresh-faced film student who was given the keys to the kingdom and didn’t exactly know what to do with the newly purchased property from New Line Cinema. The trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of The Final Friday is now here.

Marcus has spoken directly with fans as he announced that the documentary is “almost 2 hours long.” The Blu-ray edition will feature “another 2 hours of goodness that we could not fit in a theatrical feature film! Oh yeah! We’ve got...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Buck Rogers In The 25th Century
Image
Pulp-influenced, space-faring comic book heroes from Flash Gordon to Star-Lord can tip their hat to Buck Rogers, who debuted on the funny pages in 1929 and paved the way for the medium's future sci-fi protagonists. Though Legendary and Skydance have been developing their dueling "Buck Rogers" projects in recent years, the character's pop culture prevalence isn't quite what it used to be. Back in the day, however, Rogers received more than his share of attention. The character soon leaped from the page to a long-running radio series, a 1939 movie starring Buster Crabbe -- who, funnily enough, was also the go-to Flash Gordon actor of the era -- and a short-lived 1950 TV show.

However, if you were to name a definitive live-action take on Buck Rogers, it's hard to beat "Battlestar Galactica" creator Glen A. Larson's "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century." The show got its start in 1979 with a frankly...

All 12 Friday The 13th Movies, Ranked
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise started as a way to cash in on the success of Halloween, and several Jason movies have matched up to the John Carpenter classic in terms of success. Director Sean S. Cunningham took an ad out in Variety calling it "The Most Terrifying Film Ever Made," all before the movie even had a plot, according to Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th. Other films had the same goal of matching up a camp setting or day on the calendar to a slasher killer, but they never had the pure effect of Friday the 13th.

With writing that feels organic to the characters and the time period, Friday the 13th set a precedent that 11 follow-up movies have tried to match or top. These movies brought more victims to Crystal Lake for Jason Vorhees to dispatch. Soon, the Jason movies took him away from the lake setting,...

Hearts of Darkness: epic documentary on Jason Goes to Hell is almost finished

To mark the occasion, Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to announce that an epic documentary on the film, Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday, is almost finished!

Luther Recap: What Happened Before The Fallen Sun Movie?
Image
Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.

So, if you want to refresh your memory so you’re ready to catch all of The Fallen Sun’s cheeky references, or even if you’re new to the world of Luther and want to find out how we got to this point, here’s a handy primer on the story so far…

After an inquiry into his arrest of serial killer Henry Madsen, who’s been left comatose with serious injuries, Dci John Luther...

Every Season Of Luther Ranked Worst To Best
Image
"Luther" is a TV rarity. A show beloved by fans the world over, it never overstays its welcome, and shows up just when you need it. Created and written by Neil Cross, "Luther" follows Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, an officer consumed with the weight of the crimes he investigates. Across the series, Luther and the other members of his unit, including Detective Sergeant Justin Ripley (Warren Brown), Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), and DS Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), take to the gritty streets of London and go up against the worst the city has to offer.

When "Luther" first aired in 2010, Idris Elba's star was on the rise. He had supporting roles in films like "28 Weeks Later," "Rocknrolla," and "American Gangster," and had received critical acclaim for his turn as Stringer Bell on "The Wire." Since then, Elba has become a bonafide international star, and Dci...

Awfully Good: Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
Image
If the new Halloween movie wasn’t Halloween-y enough for you, well, you probably also hated this other “final” franchise film…

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Director: Adam Marcus

Stars: Kane Hodder, Steven Williams, Erin Gray

Is There A Plot?

Despite already having a “Final Chapter” five movies earlier, Jason Voorhees is once again killed, allowing the residents of Crystal Lake to relax for the first time in a decade. But, of course, just because his body was destroyed, it doesn’t mean the hockey-masked murderer is done murdering.

What’S The Damage?

Similar to how some are saying Halloween Ends isn’t really a Halloweeen movie and complaining about Michael Myers’ noticeable absence, one could make the same claim about Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, which barely counts as an entry in the franchise and also features a title killer who sits out the majority of his own film.

‘Buck Rogers’ Estate Blasts Off Against Legendary Over George Clooney TV Reboot; Company Says It “Secured The Rights We Need”
Image
Exclusive: A growing dust-up over classic outer space hero Buck Rogers isn’t a fight over rights, and it won’t be warming up to become one if Legendary Entertainment has anything to say about it.

The Buck Rogers estate, overseen by the Nowlan Family Trust, on Tuesday fired off a cease-and-desist letter to Legendary about its recent announcement that it was developing a TV reboot of the popular sci-fi property. George Clooney and his Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov are set to executive produce Legendary’s Buck Rogers project with a script by Brian K. Vaughn and Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford also producing.

In the brief-ish letter sent by email and snail mail to Michael Ross, Legendary Entertainment’s EVP Business Affairs, the estate contends that “the Buck Rogers interests” have already penned an agreement with David Ellison’s Skydance Productions to exploit the property.

“Be advised...

The movie star, along with producing partner Grant Heslov, is set to executive-produce for Legendary a limited TV series about the iconic sci-fi character, who — one way or another, depending on which take you’ve read/watched — gets trapped in suspended animation for some 500 years, eventually waking up in the 25th century.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 3 Review: The Heiress
Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Pedro Pascal, Shirley Henderson, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Katee Sackhoff, Amy Sedaris, Omid Abtahi, Emily Swallow, and Katy O'Brian in The Mandalorian (2019)
Dank Farrik! The previous episode rather sucked, and we were hoping for some upward movement in The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 3: "The Heiress." Well, we got it.

Plenty of action abounds. But more importantly -- and more interestingly (as far as this critic is concerned) -- we have plot progression; this is the way!

But the episode's meat surprisingly does not follow any obstacle-ridden aspects of the Frog Lady egg journey from The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 2: "The Passenger."

In fact, the continuing plot from that episode ends rather suddenly within the first couple minutes.

Of course, the larger arc involves Din seeking others of his kind along with any of the Jedi to whom he might return The Child.

But at least we not only get to see a little more of our new favorite Frog Lady, but we are introduced to Froggy Husband Guy.

And The Child...

According to Patch.com, Dinapoli claims that her beloved dog Scruffles died during a grooming appointment at a PetSmart store in Flemington. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return Brings Back the Laughs
We’ve Got Movie Sign again! It’s been 18years since the last time the mad scientists forced the bots and their human companion to watch cheesy movies. Mystery Science Theater 3000, a low-budget but hilarious cable comedy show from the 80s-90s, has been resurrected on Netflix, with a new cast but the same satiric spirit. Does Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return live up to its predecessor?

In the not-too-distant past (1988-1999), Mystery Science Theater 3000 was a cult hit, first on Comedy Central and then on the SyFy Network. Created by comedian Joel Hodgson, it ran for over 10 years, despite numerous cast changes, and a netwrok change, along the way. MST3K gained a legion of devoted fans, (myself included) all of whom were sad to see the show go off the air in 1999. Almost two decades later, Hodgson has brought his comedic gem back, with all-new episodes.

With equal parts fan service, entertaining writing, good performances and nostalgia, "Embracing the Winds" delivers what fans of classic Star Trek want from their Trek.

Note to Jj Abrams…Watch this show! These guys get it. You don’t. This is what fans of Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969) expect when they see the name Star Trek. The fan-made, crowd funded Star Trek Continues is such a superb extension of the old show, it makes you wonder why Paramount doesn’t hire these folks to write the new films. They’re much better at it than whoever is writing those movies now.

Before we go further into “Embracing the Winds”, it should be pointed out that this episode was filmed before the...

Mindy Newell Is Trekkin’
Have you heard Star Trek Continues? I happened to discover it just today, as I was surfing the web this morning. It is an award-winning …well, let me quote from the site itself:

“Star Trek Continues is a critically-acclaimed, award-winning, fan-produced webseries… the brainchild of long-time Star Trek: The Original Series fan – and producer, director, actor, voice-actor, musician – Vic Mignogna.

“Star Trek Continues is proud to be part of Trek history, aimed at completing

the final two years of the original five-year mission. After mounting a successful Kickstarter campaign, the show is already making waves and attracting guest stars such as Michael Forest, Jamie Bamber, Lou Ferrigno, and Erin Gray – as well as cameos by Star Trek alums like Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn.”

It really is absolutely captivating. Mr. Mignogna is perfect – and I mean perfect! – William Shatner as Captain James Tiberius Kirk, down to body movements and personal tics.

Revisiting Buck Rogers In The 25th Century
Andrew time travels 35 years back to revisit the theatrical release of the Buck Rogers In The 25th Century film...

Once synonymous with science fiction, the phrase ‘That Buck Rogers Stuff’ once called to mind everything the average person thought about Science Fiction - ray guns, rocket ships and robots. Certainly in the 1928, when the then-christened Anthony Rogers made his debut, he was something pretty unique in Sci-Fi - the space adventurer as swash-buckler. Given the nickname ‘Buck’ by John F. Dille, the novel, Armageddon, was adapted into the comic strips in 1929 and then in 1932, Buck Rogers became the first major Science Fiction radio drama. 1939 saw Larry ‘Buster’ Crabbe take on the role for a 12-part serial. All of this is to say that Buck Rogers was around for quite a while before many people of my generation discovered him.

Buck Rogers In The 25th Century arrived on UK shores via the medium of cinema.

'Buck Rogers' Star Erin Gray: How I Turned Comic-Con (and Other Conventions) Into a Second Career
Erin Gray
A version of this story first appeared in the Aug. 1 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Erin Gray begat many a fanboy dream with her portrayal of tough but sexy starfighter pilot Wilma Deering on NBC's 1979 sci-fi series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and since the early 1990s she's been regular on the convention autograph circuit. Gray eventually started a business booking actors for conventions and engagements, and today her Heroes for Hire reps around 150 clients, including Arrow star Stephen Amell, Torchwood star John Barrowman and fan favorite Bruce Campbell. oh my god, Star Trek Continues is amazing
I just discovered (via io9) the fan-produced series Star Trek Continues, which intends to follow the crew of the USS Enterprise across the fourth and fifth years of its five-year mission. But to call it “fan-produced” is misleading. That makes it sound smaller and less incredible than it is. This isn’t a reflection of or an homage to something greater — this is Star Trek. This is so pitch-perfect a re-creation that it gave me chills, then it made me cry tears of geek joy, and then I forgot I was watching anything other than Star Trek. The sets and the costumes and the props are perfect. The lighting and the direction and the pacing is perfect. It’s even shot in the old-fashioned TV aspect ratio of 4:3. I felt like I was watching episodes from the 60s that I had somehow missed.

Two episodes of Continues have been released so far,...

Review: Superboy: The Complete Fourth Season
The Adventures of Superboy found its groove with the third season and a sense of stability was most welcome as the tone was consistent and the stories got stronger thanks to Stan Berkowitz and the increasing influence of DC editors Mike Carlin and Andy Helfer. Gerard Christopher as the title character had truly grown as a performer with time and Stacy Haiduk’s Lana Lang was every bit his match. As a result, things looked promising as production on the fourth season got underway in the summer of 1991.

However, the success of Batman in 1989 and that summer’s sequel, Batman Returns, meant there was fresh demand for super-heroes. DC Comics’ parent, Warner Bros., had already had limited success with The Flash on CBS and was looking to build. They needed Superman but that meant, in a bizarre twist, they filed suit against Alexander and Ilya Salkind to regain control of...

BBC America Review: Luther Season 3 Finale
N Conrad

The penultimate episode of Luther season 3 ended with the most shocking moment in the show’s history thus far — the murder of Ripley (Warren Brown). As I watched Luther weep alongside his slain comrade’s corpse, I wondered if Neil Cross would be able to come up with a season finale that wasn’t somewhat anti-climatic. I needn’t have wondered, because Ruth Wilson’s return soon put Warren Brown’s departure into the shade.

Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) was bound to return at some point but I didn’t expect to see her shielding her face with a gas mask as she conducted a vigilante attack on a cop car. Her dramatic rescue scene was one of those odd moments when you find yourself rooting for the baddie even though she is attacking the supposed good guys. George Stark (David O’Hara) and Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird...

Idris Elba in Luther (2010)
'Luther' sneak peek: He's not done, and he's havin' fun -- Exclusive Clip
Idris Elba in Luther (2010)
Luther creator Neil Cross takes immense pleasure in terrifying people, if he can. And he did with last night’s premiere. Know you are not alone if you slept on your couch because you felt safer there than in your bed or jumped at noises emanating from your attic. Credit for that man’s head going through the floor goes to director Sam Miller. “He phoned me up from set and said, ‘I’ve got this great idea! Why don’t we…’ and I just went, ‘Ohmygod, yeah! Let’s do that! Let’s do that!’” Cross tells EW. Tonight...

"Luther" Film A Prequel, Alice Gets Spin-Off
Since the finish of BBC's extra bleak crime drama "Luther" in July, many have been wondering more about what comes next for the franchise.

Creator Neil Cross has previously stated on numerous occasions that there have been plans for a movie, but wouldn't say if it is going to be a prequel or a sequel.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Cross finally confirmed that it will be a prequel. The script is done and he hopes to get the film made next year.

Cross says: "It will follow his [Luther's] career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series." That scene being the death of a serial paedophile Henry Madsen (Anton Saunders) whom Luther failed to save from a fall off a catwalk in a chemical factory.

Cross says that part of...

'Arrested Development's' Jason Bateman: Before the Emmys, 'It's Your Move' and 'Silver Spoons'
Jason Bateman scored his second career Emmy nomination this year for playing Michael Bluth on "Arrested Development," eight years after first being nominated for the role.

That's great and all -- but in a certain part of the pop-culture consciousness, he'll always be Matthew Burton.

You know, the lead character of "It's Your Move"? The one-season NBC sitcom from 1984-85?

Welcome to Before They Were Emmy Nominees. Each Tuesday and Wednesday between now and the Emmy Awards on Sept. 22, we're going to look back at some early and obscure roles of a few of this year's acting nominees. (See Zap2it's Before They Were Nominees photo gallery.)

"It's Your Move" came from Ron Leavitt and Michael G. Moye, the future creators of "Married ... With Children." Bateman's Matthew was a teenage prankster and scam artist who lived with his sister (Tricia Cast) and their mom (Caren Kaye). Matthew met his match...

'Luther' series 3 reviews: What the critics are saying
Dci John Luther is back. Idris Elba returned to BBC One last night (July 2) as the maverick and ruthless cop, pulling in a bumper audience of over 5 million.

The show had its usual mix of thrills and frights - scary men under the bed, Loofer hanging men from the top of council estates, bumps in the attic - but did it still have the magic touch? Here's a round-up of what the critics thought to the series three premiere:

Digital Spy

What holds the show's cocktail of horror movie tropes, gruesome violence and cop show theatrics together is the magnetic central performance of Idris Elba - a real star blessed with a natural cool and charisma.

The Independent

Though Luther delivers its gore and its dread with a certain amount of style, it too often falls back on the standard machinery. 'What am I not seeing?' Luther asks himself...

Luther Season 3 Episode 1 Review
Idris Elba as Luther

B Van Heusen

His outfit is the same, his mood is no better, and London is still seemingly full of twisted sociopaths. However, the task of hunting down Britain’s sickest serial killers may soon be passed onto someone else as the noose seems to be tightening around Luther’s neck.

Season three began simply enough with Luther (Idris Elba) and Ripley (Warren Brown) wrapping up a bread and butter case. However, while Schenk (Dermot Crowley) seems to have grown to love Luther, his old nemesis Dci Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) still dreams about his downfall. Along with Dsu George Stark (David O’Hara) she is hoping to expose him as a dirty cop. Ripley reluctantly agreed to get involved in the investigation but Luther didn’t exactly help his case when he dangled a man off a sky-rise and sabotaged a murder investigation. At this point,...

'Luther' series 3 review: Idris Elba returns in must-see TV
Let's get this out of the way straight off the bat - Luther is very, very silly. If you're looking for gritty realism, then Idris Elba's hulking maverick cop ain't for you. But if you're not a telly snob, then Luther - three series in - remains enormous fun.

At times, this series opener takes on more of a cartoonish sensibility than ever before, but that's not a criticism - the killer sliding out from under his unsuspecting victim's bed in the opening sequence is utterly ludicrous, but an undeniably effective play on childhood fears. Luther's entire remit is firmly re-established in that one fantastic moment.

The 'slasher movie' vibe is stronger here than it's ever been before on Luther - the scenes in the hapless couple's attic could have been plucked from a Halloween movie.

But again, what might sound like a criticism isn't intended as one...

Warren Brown 'Luther' Q&A: 'I'd love a Ripley spinoff show'
Luther is finally returning to BBC One - but, as ever, it's far from smooth-sailing for London's most imposing copper. Relentlessly pursued by a ruthless ex-cop, Dci John Luther (Idris Elba) finds even his closest friends turning against him, including DS Justin Ripley (Warren Brown).

Digital Spy and other journalists spoke to Brown about the four new hour-long episodes, whether the rumours about Luther coming to an end are true and whether we might ever see Ripley again...

It's been a while since the last series - have Luther fans been demanding to know when the show will be back?

"Yeah, I've certainly had people really interested, saying 'When's it on, when's it on?' - non-stop Twitter people, fans, which is great, that people are eager to see it."

What is it about Luther that the fans have latched onto so strongly?

"I don't know. For me, it's one...

Quarry Collects Actress Nikki Amuka-Bird
I know British actress Nikki Amuka-Bird best as the long suffering Det. Sgt. Erin Gray on BBC One’s addictive series Luther. Fans will get to see another side of her now that she’s been cast in the new Cinemax drama pilot Quarry.

Logan Marshall-Green stars in the pilot as a 1973 era Vietnam vet, freshly home for the war and quite disillusioned. So, what does he do? He joins a shadow organization to become a hitman.

Amuka-Bird will play Ruth, explained the latest Deadline casting update. Ruth is the wife of Artie, friend to Marshall-Green’s Quarry. Artie is a former Marine, by the by.

It’s all coming together. Quarry is based on the series of novels by Max Allan Collins, who also brought us the amazing Road To Perdition graphic novel. As previously reported, Stellan Skarsgård will play the key role of The Broker. Noah Taylor has...

'Silver Spoons' Cast: Where Are They Now?
Ricky ou la belle vie (1982)
It's been more than a quarter century since the "Silver Spoons" cast shared the small screen together, but Ricky Schroder, Joel Higgins, Erin Gray and Alfonso Ribeiro gathered to look back on the '80s hit on "Today" this week (above).

"Silver Spoons," which aired on NBC from September 25, 1982 to March 4, 1987, made Schroder a star, but Higgins said he never let it get to his head. "There were no egos involved. Nobody was a diva. If anybody had a right to be, it was Rick and he never, never was," the now retired actor said on "Today."

"It was absolutely perfect," Gray, who has a few thriller movies coming out soon, added of working with her former "Silver Spoons" co-stars. "The best five years of my life. Loved them at the beginning; loved them at the end. Can't say that too often."

Speaking of love, Schroder, who is now married with four children,...
