Brad Pitt Starred In This Forgotten Tales From The Crypt Spin-Off
Image
There was a time when "Tales from the Crypt" was the jewel in HBO's crown. Based on ultra-gory, super-lascivious EC Comics from the 1950s, "Tales from the Crypt" was a wicked, bloody anthology series that boasted "Twilight Zone"-like morality tales, only with more cussing, sex, gore, and nudity. The series was hosted by a pun-enthused rotting corpse called the Cryptkeeper, voiced by John Kassir, and he would read tales out of his castle basement, eager to see the protagonists get dismembered. The series was a huge hit, and it attracted gigantic stars on a regular basis. Tom Hanks appeared on the show, and Arnold schwarzenegged directed one. Indeed, throw a rock in a room full of actors who were active in the early 1990s, and you'll hit someone who was on "Tales from the Crypt."

Somehow this nasty little show became one of the flagship shows of HBO in the 1990s,...

Kneel Before Terence Stamp, A Brilliant And Beautiful Actor Who Played Superman's Mightiest Foe
Image
Terence Stamp was in danger of disappearing in the late 1970s when he landed the role of General Zod in Richard Donner's "Superman." The Kryptonian menace, who gets condemned to an eternity of misery in The Phantom Zone, exploded with a nationalistic, genocidal, Hitler-esque intensity. He believes in the racial superiority of Kryptonians and pleads with Jor-El (Marlon Brando) to commit to the preservation of their endangered race. Jor-El is a principled man who wants nothing to do with Zod's eugenicist conquest. Zod, however, assures Jor-El that should he ever break free of the Forbidden Zone, he will enslave his Kryptonian bête noire's offspring.

This was my introduction to Terence Stamp, and it drew blood. Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor was a cartoonish villain who felt eminently conquerable for Christopher Reeve's Superman. But when Stamp returned for "Superman II", the Stepney, London native brought the physical threat that...

Terence Stamp, Star Of Superman And Far From The Madding Crowd, Dies Aged 87
Image
Legendary British actor Terence Stamp, Oscar nominated star of Billy Budd and beloved by legions for his role as General Zod in Richard Donner's Superman, has died at the age of 87. In a statement shared with Reuters, Stamp's family confirmed that he passed away on Sunday morning, and said the following: "He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time."

Born in Stepney, London on 22 July 1938 to Ethel Esther and Thomas Stamp, Terence Henry Stamp's love affair with the big screen began at the tender age of just three, when his mother took him to see Gary Cooper starrer Beau Geste. It was an experience that clearly left a mark on a young Stamp as, after completing his childhood education...

Terence Stamp remembered: The actor’s most memorable and most-awarded roles from ‘Billy Budd’ to ‘Superman II’
Image
Celebrated British actor and comic book cinema's first supervillain Terence Stamp died Aug. 17 at age 87. Stamp's family has confirmed his passing, but has not shared additional details at press time.

Born in 1938 in the Stepney district of London's East End, Stamp rose to prominence alongside a new generation of U.K. actors who became international movie stars in the 1960s — names that included Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Oliver Reed, and Peter O'Toole. That group directly preceded Hollywood's own vanguard of rising stars like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro who dominated U.S. movie screens in the 1970s.

Even amid a crowded field of talent on both sides of the pond, Stamp routinely stood out from the competition courtesy of his piercing gaze and adeptness at portraying fierce iconoclasts and outsiders dedicated to advancing their own causes — even if those causes were more villainous than virtuous.

Superman, Smallville, And Star Wars Icon Terence Stamp Has Passed Away, Age 87
Image
"Kneel before Zod!"

We have some sad news to report this morning, as it's been confirmed that screen icon Terence Stamp has died. The actor was 87. His family shared the news of his passing with Reuters, revealing that he died earlier today.

"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come," Stamp's family said in a statement. "We ask for privacy at this sad time."

The actor left an indelible mark on cinema over a six-decade career. Born in 1938 in Stepney, London, Stamp's journey began with a scholarship to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, leading to his film debut in Billy Budd. That role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.

He later starred in The Collector,...

Image
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is well on its way to swinging into theaters, and Tom Holland has already started suiting up.

The last time we saw Spidey on the big screen, he was sharing it with his predecessors, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. That got me thinking: who is the best Spider-Man?

All of them… or none of them? They’re all awesome in their own way.

Today, we’re going to break down each actor’s portrayal of the web-head in their respective films, and explore how Spider-Man: No Way Home re-opened the book of possibilities for future Spider-Man crossovers.

Tobey Maguire: The Godfather of the Spider-Trio

We’ll start at the beginning of Spider-Man in cinema (not counting the Japanese version) with the Godfather of the Spider-trio: Tobey Maguire.

Tobey was cast as Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s highly acclaimed and much-loved Spider-Man trilogy, which was originally...

Terence Stamp, Brooding Legend of British Cinema, Dies at 87
Image
Terence Stamp, the strikingly handsome British actor who embodied the swinging sixties and whose versatility shone in Billy Budd, Superman and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, died Sunday, his family told The New York Times. He was 87.

They did not specify where he died or the cause, the newspaper said.

Stamp won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his terrifying performance as a psycho who holds a young woman (Samantha Eggar) hostage in William Wyler’s The Collector (1965), then experienced a resurgence when he played the Kryptonian megalomaniac General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980).

Stamp had supporting roles in Legal Eagles (1986) and Wall Street (1988), then received critical praise for portraying a veteran English crook in the Steven Soderbergh crime drama The Limey (1999). Also that year, he gained Star Wars immortality by playing Chancellor Valorum in The Phantom Menace.

In his youth, the...

William Shatner Was Worried That People Would Laugh At His Twilight Zone Episode
Image
Even if you didn't grow up watching "The Twilight Zone," you've almost certainly been influenced or seen something that's been influenced by Rod Serling's seminal sci-fi horror series. Aside from becoming hugely popular during its original five-season run from 1959-64 on CBS, the show galvanized its standing in syndication before being reimagined with three separate TV revivals in 1985, 2002, and 2019. There was also the cursed "Twilight Zone" movie from 1982, and the fact that individual episodes have been referenced, parodied, and used for inspiration in everything from "Child's Play" to "The Simpsons."

In the latter case, you might remember a segment from 1993's "Treehouse of Horror IV" entitled "Terror at 5+1⁄2 Feet," in which Bart is menaced by a gremlin that only he can see while on the school bus. This was just one of many reimaginings of "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," a classic "Twilight Zone" episode which has officially been remade...

Immaculate: Sydney Sweeney’s Horror Film Becomes Prime Video Hit, Entering Global Top 10 Despite Modest Box Office
Image
Sydney Sweeney’s Enters Global Top 10 On Prime Video ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Sydney Sweeney moved from the bright world of romantic comedy to the dark corridors of horror with Immaculate, her first film after the massive success of Anyone But You. She promoted it heavily, with distributor Neon even bringing real nuns to watch parts of the movie and filming their startled reactions. The film follows a young American nun who joins an Italian convent, only to uncover terrifying secrets that lead to territory reminiscent of Rosemary’s Baby.

The movie did not set fire to the box office despite its modest budget of under nine million dollars, making around $35 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. The reviews were mostly positive, with a solid score 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and many noting Sweeney...

Sydney Sweeney’s 71% Rt ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Replacement Becomes an Instant Streaming Hit
Image
Some films seem to be tailor-made for home video success, and the 2024 supernatural horror film Immaculate is one of them. That said, the movie should've done much better in theaters, especially since it was star Sydney Sweeney's immediate follow-up to her smash-hit romantic comedy Anyone But You. Sweeney put all her might behind promoting the film, as did distributor Neon. They memorably got a couple of real nuns to watch bits of the film, and captured their reactions on camera. Immaculate follows a young American nun who moves to an Italian convent and discovers all sorts of horrific secrets about it. As she digs further, she experiences something straight out of Rosemary's Baby, the classic horror film based on Ira Levin's novel. Immaculate is now available to watch on Prime Video, where it promptly found a spot on the global viewership charts.

According to FlixPatrol, Immaculate was the...

Why Nicolas Cage's Superman Lives Was Canceled
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Anyone who saw the box office disaster of super-heroic proportions that was 2022's "The Flash" will surely remember CGI Nicolas Cage cropping up during Barry Allen's multiversal exploits. Aside from the fact that the CGI rendering left a lot to be desired, this uncanny cameo, in which Cage's Superman faces off against a giant spider, probably struck many as just a tad bizarre, considering it seemed to come out of nowhere. But for those unaware of the doomed "Superman Lives" movie, this ill-advised moment in "The Flash" was actually a nod to a notorious chapter in DC's cinematic history.

Tim Burton restored the image of Batman as a dark vigilante in the public's collective consciousness with his two movies, 1989's "Batman" and 1992's "Batman Returns." After the dark expressionist nightmare that was "Returns" upset a bunch of kids...

Superman Buries Zack Snyder’s Highest-Grossing Movie at Box Office Before Digital Release
Image
James Gunn‘s Superman brought in the big bucks at the domestic box office this weekend as it officially surpassed Zack Snyder‘s highest-grossing Dceu film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With $331.2 million in the bag (Box Office Mojo), Superman leaves BvS behind to bite the dust with the latter’s $330.36 million (Box Office Mojo).

Moreover, Superman‘s theatrical run is far from being over at this point. The movie has not only buried Snyder’s crown but also fended off all three MCU giants of 2025, i.e., Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four, to stand alone at the top – and all before hitting digital release, too.

This also marks the first time in 17 years that DC has beaten Marvel at the box office since Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight overshadowed Iron Man in 2008.

Michael Rosenbaum was the best Lex Luthor ever – here’s why
Image
Fun fact: my default Halloween costume has always been Lex Luthor. As a proudly bald man with several spiffy suits, it’s an easy role to pull off every year—though I’ll sometimes mix it up and go as Agent 47 from the Hitman video game. Because of this, I’ve always felt a certain kinship with “the greatest criminal mind of our time”… even if you’d never know it from watching most movie versions. That’s right—Lex Luthor on the big screen has always kind of sucked.

On TV, however, they nailed him. Michael Rosenbaum delivered the definitive portrayal on Smallville. But in films? No one has truly matched the potential of the character. Let’s take a look at each big-screen version.

Gene Hackman

I’ll start by saying I have nothing but respect for Gene Hackman as an actor—he might even be the finest actor of his generation.

With Superman, DC Has Its First Undisputed Victory Against Marvel In 17 Years
Image
As we reach the final weeks of the 2025 summer movie season, let's take a look at the current state of the comic book movie genre. What was once the most reliable cash cow for Hollywood throughout the 2010s has since cratered in box office returns. Sure, Marvel Studios had at least two $1 billion hits this decade, with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Deadpool and Wolverine," and DC's "The Batman" was a critical and commercial success. But otherwise, the genre has fallen considerably from its peak.

That said, 2025 has arguably been the best summer of comic book films in several years. Marvel Studios kicked off the summer with "Thunderbolts," which proved to be one of its better post-Phase 3 Marvel Cinematic Universe. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" finally gave us a quality film adaptation featuring Marvel's First Family. Unfortunately, despite these two films undoubtedly being some of the best that Marvel has...

Andrew was originally set to playing Frankenstein’s monster in the new Netflix movie, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Is ‘The Goonies 2’ Really Happening? Here’s What We Know
Image
Guys, grab your treasure maps and prep the booby traps, because The Goonies 2 is officially setting sail and it’s not a drill. Nearly four decades after the original cult classic debuted in 1985, Warner Bros. has greenlit a long-awaited sequel with Potsy Ponciroli tapped to write the script.

While there’s no director attached yet and plot details are still buried deeper than One-Eyed Willy’s loot, the names behind the scenes are enough to spark major excitement. But exciting news, Steven Spielberg is returning as producer alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay, is back on board.

In case you somehow missed the cultural moment that was The Goonies, this classic followed a scrappy group of kids in coastal Oregon who stumbled upon a centuries-old treasure map and set out on a wildly dangerous, booby-trap-filled adventure.

Goonies 2: Josh Brolin Has A Good Reason To Feel Hesitant About Potential Sequel
Image
Recently, Josh Brolin addressed why he feels so hesitant to make The Goonies 2. Directed by Richard Donner and based on a story by Steven Spielberg, 1985's cult classic movie, The Goonies, follows a group of children hoping to save their homes from foreclosure by finding the lost treasure of the legendary pirate, One-Eyed Willy.

In fact, in 2017, it was even selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." As a result of its classic status, it is no surprise that a sequel has been discussed.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, The Goonies star Josh Brolin addressed reports of a sequel, stating his worries about a second film. When the interviewer said they hoped The Goonies 2 would happen, Brolin stated: "Of course you hope it does.

Original Star Josh Brolin Explains His 'Trepidation' About a Potential Goonies Sequel
Image
Original The Gooniesstar Josh Brolin opens up about his "trepidation" regarding the upcoming sequel.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Brolin said of the planned sequel film, "I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It's just everything good about it." Brolin added, "The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is]."

Brolin went on to discuss what a reunion film would look like with the original cast. "It's like, 'Oh, we came out with another,' and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn't see very well," Brolin joked before acknowledging that any success in The Goonies sequel would largely hinge on the approval of original producer and co-writer,...

A sequel to 1985’s The Goonies has been walking the plank for years. But now that it is apparently moving forward, we have to wonder what the original cast thinks. Henry Cavill Gave David Corenswet One Piece Of Advice For Superman
Image
A new age of DC has arrived with James Gunn's "Superman," a charming crowd-pleaser that's silly in all the right ways. It's a refreshing change of pace to see David Corenswet's Man of Steel having a bit of fun after the oppressive slog that was Zack Snyder's series of films featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. Now, Warner Bros. and Gunn will be looking to build on the more light-hearted tone established with "Superman" as they build out their burgeoning DC Universe.

There are multiple elements that make Gunn's film much more fun than its predecessors, from Krypto the dog, who might just be the real star of "Superman," to the "Guardians of the Galaxy"-esque humor, which doesn't always work as well in "Superman" as it did in Gunn's beloved Marvel trilogy, but it certainly helps lighten things up. We also got an array of fantastical...

Brolin Says Spielberg Still Holding Key to Goonies 2
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin says the long-rumored follow-up to 1985’s The Goonies remains stalled because Steven Spielberg has not yet approved any of the five scripts sent to him to date. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of Weapons this week, the actor admitted “trepidation” about reopening the story but said he still hopes the project happens for new generations of viewers.

In February Warner Bros. signaled fresh momentum, hiring Old Henry writer Potsy Ponciroli to tackle a new draft while keeping Spielberg, original screenwriter Chris Columbus and Amblin partners Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario on board as producers. IMDb’s industry news feed listed the hire among the studio’s slate updates. Industry outlet Punch Drunk Critics called the move the “big step forward” fans had waited for. Wikipedia now marks the sequel as confirmed as of 14 February 2025.

Cast enthusiasm remains high. At a 40-year anniversary screening in Salt Lake City,...

Josh Brolin Explains Why He’s Uncertain About A Sequel To ‘The Goonies’
Image
While The Goonies has long inspired hopes of a sequel, star Josh Brolin isn’t embarking on that quest just yet.

Mel Gibson’s $952M Action Epic Streams Free Starting August 1
Image
The ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, a cornerstone of action cinema, is making a big move. Starting August 1, 2025, all four movies will be available to stream for free on Tubi. This marks a rare moment when the entire franchise, starring Mel Gibson as the wild Martin Riggs and Danny Glover as the steady Roger Murtaugh, lands on one platform together.

The first film, released in 1987, kicked off the buddy-cop genre with a bang. Directed by Richard Donner and written by Shane Black, it follows Riggs, a grieving ex-Special Forces cop, and Murtaugh, a family man nearing retirement, as they tackle a drug-smuggling ring. Their clashing styles—Riggs’ reckless energy versus Murtaugh’s cautious wisdom—sparked iconic chemistry that carried the series.

‘Lethal Weapon 2’ in 1989 upped the stakes with Joe Pesci joining as the fast-talking Leo Getz. The trio takes on South African smugglers, blending high-octane chases with sharp humor. The 1992 sequel,...

James Gunn Agrees With Zack Snyder's Most Controversial Superman Scene
Image
Superheroes killing in the name of justice has been a controversial topic for decades now. In 1992, Tim Burton's weird experiment "Batman Returns" hit theaters and managed to upset audiences on several different levels. Parents (and McDonald's) were affronted by the general tone of Burton's nightmare Gotham, to the extent that the Warner Bros execs decided to change course dramatically with the next movie, dropping Burton as director in favor of Joel Schumacher, who then delivered 1995's more colorful, fan-friendly blockbuster "Batman Forever" (an overlooked Batman movie that's more groundbreaking than you realize). But some fans were dismayed by "Returns" for another reason — namely, that Michael Keaton's Batman was a stone-cold killer, dousing one criminal in jet fuel and blowing another sky high without flinching.

Fast-forward to the 2010s and the same debate was playing out among fans, only this time it also involved DC's other biggest hero: Superman.

12 Superman Easter eggs and references you may have missed
Image
After years of underwhelming releases and an overall lack of cohesion in storytelling, DC bounced back with a bang on July 11 with James Gunn’s reliable, comic book-loving direction.

Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, was loved by fans and critics alike. From incredibly positive early reviews to a $125 million domestic opening weekend, Gunn’s film soared to a summer blockbuster status while delivering a promising revival of the Dcu.

In the movie, Gunn drops us into an existing universe where metahumans are already established. Instead of seeing Kal-El land on Earth in his Kryptonian spaceship, we catch him on just another day in Metropolis—a nod to Gunn’s experience of reading Superman comic books.

However, what the movie does not say out loud in as many words, it makes up for with Easter eggs.

Western Actor Charles Bronson Appeared In A Classic Horror Movie Before Superstardom
Image
Most of us are pretty used to the idea that horror movies are a great way for up-and-coming actors to get a foothold in the film industry. That's primarily thanks to the horror boom of the 1980s, giving opportunities to numerous thespians who went on to become A-list actors; folks like Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Meg Ryan, and others. Yet the notion of horror giving a first chance to future stars is not relegated to the last 40-odd years. Sure, horror's reputability certainly wavered during the classic Hollywood years, meaning that studio horror films weren't as prolific as Westerns were, and thus many more young actors found themselves riding a horse more often than running around a spooky castle. Yet horror's always been popular, and during the 1950s, the studios began to get excited about a new gimmick which would briefly revitalize the genre: 3D.

James Gunn Confirmed That Two Characters From Superman's Hall Of Justice Mural Will Return - But Where?
Image
Now that a couple of weeks have passed and heads have cooled down from the opening weekend hype, we can start to just admit publicly that, yes, James Gunn's "Superman" is pretty good. Is this the second coming of Richard Donner's original "Superman" from 1978, or as good as the Fleischer Superman cartoons? Not really. Is it a silly and fun return to form for the character after more than a decade of depressingly bleak Jesus allegories and "Superman as evil" what-ifs? Yes. Does it have arguably the single best portrayal of Jimmy Olsen on screen? Unquestionably. Does "Superman" work as a great introduction to a brand new DC Universe and makes it stand out from Marvel? Absolutely.

This last bit is important because there was a lot of speculation about what would happen if "Superman" didn't deliver the goods and how the DC Universe could build up from...

The Smallville Character Superman Actor Christopher Reeve Played
Image
Now that James Gunn's charming crowd-pleaser "Superman" has debuted with David Corenswet in the lead role, we've had four big-screen Supermen (not counting the movie serials or 1951's "Superman and the Mole Men"). But while the character's darker DC counterpart, Batman, has flourished in a cinematic environment in which new actors and directors have put their spin on the source material, Superman has had a different experience. That is to say that the films arguably peaked with the very first blockbuster entry: 1978's "Superman: The Movie."

Richard Donner's seminal superhero outing established the blueprint for the modern blockbuster, but every attempt to follow that blueprint has simply existed in the shadow of the original. Donner treated Superman and his history with reverence and respect, crafting a movie that felt grand and spectacular but which also made Clark Kent, his alter-ego, and the people around him feel real. Ultimately,...

James Gunn Receives Hero’s Welcome During ‘Superman’ Victory Lap at Comic-Con
Image
With Superman a box office hit in North America, filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn took a victory lap and received a hero’s welcome at the epicenter of geek culture, San Diego Comic-Con.

On Saturday, Gunn enjoyed a standing ovation in the 6,500 person-packed, cavernous Hall H during the panel for the HBO Max series Peacemaker, with star John Cena and moderator Josh Horowitz encouraging the crowd.

Just over an hour later, the filmmaker surprised guests at the Jim Lee & Friends panel, where he also was greeted with wild enthusiasm.

And as much as it was about him, and it was, indeed, plenty about him, Gunn also gave back as much as he received, to his Peacemaker cast, to comic book creators, and to the fans. There are few, in any, filmmakers who boost the comic medium as passionately and effervescently as Gunn does.

At Lee & Friends panel, Gunn...

David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
‘Superman IV: The Quest for Peace’: From Flop To Cult Classic
David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
Image Source: Warner Bros When Superman (1978) first soared into theaters, audiences truly believed a man could fly. By the time Superman III arrived, fans were already questioning the direction of the franchise. Then came Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and suddenly, its predecessor didn’t seem so bad. Released on July 24, 1987, this fourth installment marked Christopher Reeve’s final appearance as the Man of Steel. While the film didn’t win critical acclaim (though it earned its share of Razzie nominations), it has secured a permanent spot in the “so bad it’s good” category of superhero cinema. A Plot with a Purpose… If Not Perfect Execution Christopher Reeve co-wrote the story for Superman IV, aiming to address the serious issue of nuclear disarmament. In one of the film’s most memorable sequences, Superman gathers the world’s nuclear weapons in a giant net and hurls them into the sun.

Mel Gibson’s Classic 1980s Action Franchise Is Coming to a New Streamer Next Month, and It’s Free
Image
After streaming on Pluto TV in July, Mel Gibson's iconic 1980s action comedy franchise will continue to be available on free streaming, albeit in a different home. As part of an exciting slate of action-packed films, Tubi is adding Lethal Weapon and its three sequels, starring Gibson and Danny Glover, to the platform to help close out the summer with a bang. Debuting in 1987, it's the prototypical buddy cop movie franchise and the perfect watch for when the weather is hot and the mood calls for something a bit more explosive. The films will all be available starting on August 1, alongside the Jason Statham-led The Meg, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Baby Driver, among other titles.

The original Lethal Weapon cast Gibson as troubled police detective Martin Riggs and Glover as his older partner Roger Murtaugh. Following his wife's death, Riggs is in rough shape, becoming increasingly volatile on...

Stan Lee at an event for Hulk (2003)
Stan Lee said 1978’s Superman made Marvel jealous
Stan Lee at an event for Hulk (2003)
Legendary comic book icon Stan Lee got to see superhero movies take off in a way nobody could have fully imagined. Really, who would have thought even 20 years ago that Marvel movies would have grossed more than $30 billion worldwide? Or that there would be enough to necessitate a “universe”? Well, Stan Lee may have had an inkling that something universe-sized was possible, but that had nothing to do with Marvel – it had to do with DC.

In an excerpt from the 2011 book The Stan Lee Universe, Lee – who was of course instrumental in the evolution of not just Marvel but comic books as a whole – said it was 1978’s Superman that demonstrated the potential that such fare could have. “You know, I remember when I first saw the Superman movie. It was a revelation. It showed everybody that superheroes are important, and incredibly imaginative and worthy of being adapted to the silver screen.

Why James Gunn's Superman Sequel Should Not Feature Batman
Image
After roughly a decade of ups and downs, DC fans have a lot to celebrate right now. James Gunn's "Superman" continues to be well-received by critics and audiences alike (you can read /Film's review here), and the box office shows that viewers are eager to look towards a vibrant, optimistic future for the newly rebooted Dcu. While Metropolis' future looks brighter than ever, Gotham City is also on a winning streak thanks to "The Penguin" receiving a whopping 24 Emmy nominations, as well as Matt Reeves finally submitting his script for "The Batman Part II."

Naturally, speculation about the future of the Dcu is running rampant. In particular, fans are now more eager than ever to see what a successful and cohesive shared universe featuring DC Comics characters can bring to both film and television. As exciting as it is to see "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" and "Clayface" hit theaters...

One Of James Gunn's Superman Characters Was Created By The Godfather's Writer
Image
One of the best characters in James Gunn's 2025 film "Superman" is easily Eve Teschmacher, played by Sara Sampaio. Eve is the girlfriend of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), but she doesn't share his sense of ambition or villainy. Indeed, she's more of a classic "ditz" archetype, obsessed with selfies and fashion; the first time we see her in "Superman," she's snapping selfies while Superman (David Corenswet) and a mysterious, all-powerful villain called The Hammer of Boravia duke it out over the streets of Metropolis. She seems to be oblivious, and Lex treats her as if she's dumb.

But, of course, she's not. Eve is terrified. She dares not confront Lex because he's abusive to her. Her flightiness is a survival tactic, a way to deflect negative attention from her temperamental lover. Her only escape is communication with Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), one of the reporters at the Daily Planet. She longs to be with Jimmy,...

Superman Experts Reveal Their "Nitpicks" From James Gunn’s Dcu Debut [Exclusive]
Image
Few movies this year have had as many differing opinions as James Gunn’s Superman, but after the film earned strong scores of 83% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, one could argue that most of the negative reviews are coming from a vocal minority. The film has earned praise from many fans and critics as being the most faithful adaptation of Superman since Christopher Reeve first portrayed the character in the Richard Donner-directed films. However, in the midst of all the praise, there have been some legitimate complaints about the film, which gets a lot of things right but still misses the mark on a few angles.

Collider’s Chris McPherson recently caught up with Superman experts Robert Greenberger and Edward Gross — who co-wrote the 400+ page Superman: The Definitive History — to chat about the release of James Gunn’s debut Dcu film. While both expressed their satisfaction...

The 'Superman' Cast Is Earning Double What Henry Cavill Made for 'Man of Steel'
Image
One week has passed since Superman hit theaters, and it’s safe to say the Dcu launch has been a hit for Warner Bros. The first film under James Gunn’s creative control soared to over $220 million worldwide over its first weekend and is continuing to break barriers, now flying towards the $300 million mark. For a big-budget feature with a lot of pressure riding on it, given all the plans for DC’s future, however, the salaries have appeared on the modest side for its stars. According to a Variety report, Gunn himself got the biggest paycheck at $15 million, 20 times what the new Clark Kent and Lois Lane, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, made at $750,000 apiece. It may not seem like a lot when compared to superhero salaries nowadays, but for a franchise starter, their totals are roughly in line with past Supermen and other comic book movie stars.

Compared to their direct predecessors,...

‘I’m going to composer hell for this’: ‘Superman’ composers on adapting John Williams’ ‘sacred’ anthem for their super-score
Image
In the annals of hallowed movie scores, John Williams boasts the Holy Trinity of Jaws, Star Wars, and Superman. And woe be unto any composer that strives outdo those immortal soundtracks — particularly if they try to put their own stamp on one of the reigning gods of movie music.

That's a risk that John Murphy and David Fleming were both well aware of when James Gunn persuaded them to collaborate on the score for his relaunch of the Man of Steel's feature film franchise. Past Superman revivals have handled the challenge in different ways. John Ottman's score for 2006's Superman Returns didn't mess with success, preserving the Williams title anthem with little to no changes. But Hans Zimmer left the "Superman March" out of his score for 2013's Man of Steel — one of many controversial departures that movie made from the template established the Christopher Reeve films.

When Did Superman Become So Controversial?
Image
Superman — the most humane superhero of them all, a Big Blue Boy Scout who believes in truth and justice— is suddenly the most controversial character in pop culture.

From debates about the Last Son of Krypton’s immigration status to assertions that director James Gunn intended a Superman subplot to be an allegory of Israel’s war in Gaza, social media is abuzz about Superman, played by David Corenswet in the new movie. Even the White House via its official X account couldn’t resist getting in on the action, posting an AI-generated image of President Trump as the Man of Steel.

But this isn’t the first time pundits have tugged on Superman’s cape, attempting to drag him — and comic books — into a culture war.

Before heavy metal was said to incite satanism, before a rise in crime was pinned on hip-hop music, and before video games were blamed for mass shootings,...

47 Years Later, James Gunn’s New 'Superman' Beats Christopher Reeve's Classic at Box Office
Image
Director James Gunn didn't hide his reverence for Richard Donner's 1978 original when he was putting together his Superman reboot. The movie, starring David Corenswet as the iconic superhero, debuted last week to mostly positive reviews and an enthusiastic fan reception. Gunn's Superman retained the goofy tone of the original, which famously featured the late Christopher Reeve in the lead role, and paid homage to it by reusing the memorable theme music composed by John Williams. In less than a week of release, the new Superman has overtaken the original at the domestic box office.

The movie has grossed $155 million domestically and $314 million worldwide. This puts it ahead of the $134 million domestic and $300 million worldwide hauls of Donner's original. Of course, these numbers are unadjusted for inflation, but that's standard practice in tabulating box office performance. What this means, in simple terms, is that the original was watched...

Mel Gibson’s Free-Streaming Underrated Crime Gem Proves He Was Always More Than Braveheart
Image
Mel Gibson arguably reached the peak of his prowess during the 1990s, having directed and starred in the historical war epic film Braveheart. The movie won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, solidifying Gibson’s career. However, one underrated crime gem from the 80s proves there is more to Gibson as an actor.

In 1987, Gibson starred in the buddy-cop movie Lethal Weapon, which is currently streaming for free. The movie not only allowed Gibson to stretch his comedic chops but also launched a successful franchise that has been mostly forgotten with time. Here is why Lethal Weapon remains one of Gibson’s best movies and why you should revisit it.

Mel Gibson’s Crime Gem Lethal Weapon Proves He Is More Than Braveheart

Mel Gibson’s Must-Watch Crime Thriller That Grossed 10x Its Budget Is an American Sleeper Hit Thats Streaming for Free
Image
Mel Gibson will always be known for his Oscar-level work in grandiose epics like Braveheart and The Patriot, but almost 40 years ago, he teamed up with Danny Glover for a classic crime thriller that’s stumbled back to streaming success. Gibson and Glover star alongside Gary Busey and Mitchell Ryan in Lethal Weapon, the 1987 action classic following two nearly-paired polar opposite police officers who must put aside their differences to stop a gang of drug smugglers. Lethal Weapon is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV in America, where it’s one of the most popular movies for the streamer, sitting at #8 at the time of writing. The film grossed $120 million against a modest $12 million budget, and it also earned scores of 81% from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shane Black wrote the script for Lethal Weapon, and Richard Donner directed the film. Black went on to direct films...

A New Day for DC: Breaking Down ‘Superman’ Salaries, Budgets and More as Studio Fast-Tracks ‘Wonder Woman’ and Its Future
Image
Ahead of the world premiere of James Gunn’s “Superman” on July 7, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran took the stage to thank the most important person seated in the audience — Warner Bros. Discovery president CEO David Zaslav — “for your faith and trust in James and in me to make this movie and to kick-start the new era of DC.”

In fact, there were only a few echoes of DC past inside the Tcl Chinese Imax theater, including Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in the long-running series “Smallville,” and Will Reeve, the son of the late Christopher Reeve and thus ambassador to the Richard Donner “Superman” oeuvre. Otherwise, the night stood as the dawn of a new beginning for the film franchise that has earned $16.8 billion over 58 films at the box office but has been eclipsed in recent years by crosstown rival Marvel.

But did Gunn, who took the reins...

The Classic Jimmy Olsen Storyline Skyler Gisondo Wants To See In A Superman Sequel
Image
In James Gunn's new film "Superman," Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, a junior reporter at the Daily Planet, and one of Clark Kent's charismatic co-workers. Jimmy is dazzlingly handsome and is depicted as the office stud, often drawing giggly, flirtatious looks from the women he works with. Gisondo plays Jimmy as a little clueless and certainly lacking guile. Jimmy also has a contact inside Lex Luthor's minions. It seems Lex (Nicholas Hoult) is now dating Eve Techmacher (Sara Simpaio), one of Jimmy's ex-flings. Eve wants to reconnect with Jimmy, and feeds him information in hopes that she'll get a date out of it. Jimmy rebuffs her advances, a little overwhelmed by her outsize personality.

Jimmy Olsen is a long-standing supporting player within Superman lore, and he has shown up in just about every TV and film version of "Superman" to have come out in the last eight decades.

James Gunn's Superman Utterly Fails One Classic Character From The 1978 Movie
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Superman."

James Gunn's "Superman" is a love letter to many previous incarnations of the character, with a lot of influence being pulled from different eras of the comics. But it also takes a lot of cues from the original 1978 Richard Donner "Superman" film -- a movie that Gunn has said on multiple occasions had a massive impact on him as a kid. You can see that influence on things like David Corenswet's Superman valuing all life (even saving small animals in the middle of fights), the campy nature of some of the story and dialogue, and the back-and-forth between Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Unfortunately, Gunn's film also does one character from the '78 film incredibly dirty.

Yes, I'm talking about Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor's ditzy girlfriend played by Sara Sampaio in the 2025 film. Eve isn't from the comics. Rather,...

Zack Snyder Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best
Image
Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.

Sucker Punch (2011)

I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...
