Somebody ought to tell Bill Maher and Rob Schneider that the real cancel culture is in Brazil. According to EuroWeekly, comedian Leo Lins has been sentenced to eight years in jail for inciting intolerance with his offensive jokes.
Earlier this week, Lins received his punishment for a comedy special that targeted — deep breath here — Black people, obese people, elderly people, people with HIV, homosexuals, evangelicals, Indigenous communities, people from the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Jews and people with disabilities. Lins wasn’t trying to simply win the game but was trying to fill the entire bingo card.
A federal court in São Paulo ruled that Lins’s right to freedom of expression was not absolute, and “cannot be used as an excuse to make hateful, prejudiced and discriminatory remarks.” His jokes had consequences, the court ruled, declaring that the comedian’s YouTube special helped fuel “the spread of verbal violence in society and promote intolerance.

Before 1994's "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" debuted, even the people working on the movie weren't convinced it would be any good. At the time, Jim Carrey was essentially an unknown, having only really garnered minimal attention as part of the cast on "In Living Color." What's more, the "Ace Ventura" script was, quite frankly, deranged in a way that without Carrey actually animating the charismatic detective at its center, there was no way it could possibly work. Even during filming, cinematographer Julio Macat thought Carrey was "so over the top" that he was convinced the final product was "gonna be the biggest piece of s*** ever" (via The Ringer). Meanwhile, Carrey himself believed audiences would either love or hate Ace Ventura as a character.
Of course, as we now know, "Ace Ventura" made Jim Carrey a '90s box office phenomenon, kicking off what became a truly historic run for the actor.

What do acting and comedy aficionados Keke Palmer, Pete Davidson, and the legend himself, Eddie Murphy, have in common? Well, it's not just wits and laughs. The three actors have teamed up for an epic story written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. The Pickup, directed by Tim Story, the filmmaker behind The Blackening, Barbershop and Ride Along, will see Murphy and Davidson join forces with Palmer, who plays a criminal mastermind. Amazon MGM Studios just released new stills from the action comedy film and also gave expecting audiences a streaming release date.
After the shocking news of a stunt accident on the set of the new comedy film, The Pickup was on thin ice. But now that the dust has settled after the accident, Amazon is ready to go into full promotion mode. A former Saturday Night Live cast member is speaking out about her decades-long fallout with SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels. It all stems from her decision to boycott a 1990 episode, leading to Michaels taking some "petty" revenge.
Nora Dunn starred on Saturday Night Live for five seasons. But her tenure ended prematurely after she boycotted a 1990 episode hosted by Andrew Dice Clay. The controversial comedian's material often took aim at women and minority groups.
Musical guest Sinead O'Connor joined Dunn in sitting out the season 15 show. Michaels was reportedly very upset with the decision, chose not to renew Dunn's contract, and never let it go.
In an interview with Cracked, Dunn revealed she sent Michaels flowers ahead of season 16. The gesture was something of an olive branch, with Dunn making a joke about not appearing much in the season. But Michaels gave her the cold shoulder and did not respond.

Adam Sandler has a specific brand of humor that has made him a household name, dating all the way back to his days at Saturday Night Live. But Sandler's style isn't for everyone, and that includes a former cast member.
Sandler's career in entertainment began in the late '80s. His stand-up caught the attention of Dennis Miller, who recommended Sandler to Lorne Michaels. By 1990, Sandler was a writer and joined the cast the following year.

Sandler's career in entertainment began in the late '80s. His stand-up caught the attention of Dennis Miller, who recommended Sandler to Lorne Michaels. By 1990, Sandler was a writer and joined the cast the following year.

For months now, Saturday Night Live has enjoyed a great deal of fanfare for making it to its 50th season, which concludes on Saturday. But the show will also mark another anniversary this week — one that creator Lorne Michaels would likely prefer to forget.
On May 12, 1990, Andrew Dice Clay — one of the biggest stand-up comedians at that time — hosted SNL. In recent decades, Dice has toned down his image with funny TikTok videos and a surprisingly good performance in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, but in 1990, he was incredibly controversial. In addition to his dirty takes on nursery rhymes, Dice’s stand-up was rampant with sexist, racist and homophobic jokes. This garnered two reactions from the general public: hooting-and-hollering devotion from the tens of thousands who poured into stadiums to see the leather-clad comic, and abject revulsion from those who felt the comedian was appealing to our worst...

Saturday Night Live has been pushing boundaries for nearly five decades, delivering sharp, outrageous, and sometimes questionable humor that leaves audiences laughing, or gasping. From political satire to celebrity impersonations, the show thrives on skirting the edge of controversy.
And while cast members have endured awkward moments, few can claim to have been personally blindsided quite like Scarlett Johansson, thanks to her husband, Colin Jost.

Jost, a master of dry wit and awkward charm, found himself delivering a joke so risqué that it made his wife momentarily consider fainting. But was it really that bad? Considering SNL’s history of eyebrow-raising humor, this was just another day at 30 Rock.

Acclaimed actor and comedian Eddie Murphy lands another action film on his extensive CV. The decorated Hollywood veteran takes flight with Sony Pictures for the upcoming action comedy, Blue Falcon.
According to Deadline, Murphy has joined Blue Falcon to play the lead role. The news comes as Sony acquired the rights to the script penned by London Has Fallen and Motor City writer Chad St. John. Murphy will also co-produce Blue Falcon through his self-titled production company. Davis Films and Syndicate Entertainment are also producers of the feature-length project.

Deadline reports that Eddie Murphy is set to star in Blue Falcon, an action comedy scripted by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen). Murphy will be playing a “retired superspy who heads for the destination wedding of his estranged son, and finds himself in proximity with his archrival.” It makes me think of that Andy Warhol quote: “In the future, everyone will play a retired superspy.” I think that’s how it went.
Blue Falcon will be produced by Davis Films’ John Davis, Cliff Roberts through Syndicate Entertainment, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster through Eddie Murphy Productions.

Saturday Night Live cast member Chloe Fineman says she does not regret calling out Elon Musk for making her cry when the billionaire CEO and Trump advisor hosted the show in May 2021. In an Instagram story from the actress and comedian (via The Daily Beast), Fineman wrote, "Remember when i got in trouble for calling out mr nazi salute? ya no regrets."
She's referring to Musk twice making what appeared to be a Sieg Heil gesture during a speech at Trump's inauguration. Musk's supporters insist he was only making a "my heart goes out to you" salute, or possibly even a Roman salute, but historians insist even if it was the latter, fascists like Mussolini and Hitler adopted the gesture into their regimes, and thus there is little differentiation between the two.
Fineman first called out Musk after fellow SNL cast member Bowen Yang, in an appearance on Watch What Happens Live!

“The show must go on” is about as close to showbiz law as you can get, but that hasn’t stopped some Saturday Night Live performers from refusing to take the stage. Take Ruth Gordon, the 80-year-old host who said “No way!” to an Al Franken and Tom Davis sketch in which she’d keel over dead halfway through. Which, understandable.
Here are five other SNL cast members and guests who flat-out refused to participate in show sketches…
1 John Belushi
In the movie Saturday Night, Dan Aykroyd reluctantly acts in a sketch as a “cutie pie” getting catcalled by female construction workers. Aykroyd played the beefcake in the sketch alongside Lily Tomlin, but he wasn’t the first choice.
Writers Rosie Shuster and Anne Beatts wrote the role for Belushi, who gave the part a big thumbs-down since he was self-conscious about tiny shorts that would show off his weight.

The 1990s proved a turbulent time for Sylvester Stallone's career after the highly successful decade that was the 1980s. As the cinematic landscape shifted and action films developed, he found himself picking roles either too similar to previous outings or too dissimilar. Whether it be his often maligned comedies or his attempts to recapture the success of Stallone's best films like First Blood or the previous Rocky movies.
There are still plenty of gems to be found in his work throughout the decade, with some of his best acting on display. He has always had an inconsistent track record with the projects he has picked every decade. Varying from highs like Creed to low points like Rhinestone, but no matter what, Stallone has remained a towering figure in blockbuster cinema. Good or bad, there is rarely a boring Stallone project and many of these movies prove that.

Sinead O’Connor Rips Up Pope’s Photo on Live TV: A Controversial Moment Remembered! (Photo Credit – Wikimedia)
It was October 3, 1992, a night that would etch itself into pop culture history. Sinéad O’Connor, the punk spirit wrapped in reluctant pop star clothing, took to the Saturday Night Live stage and did the unthinkable: she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II. With each tear—once, twice, thrice—O’Connor’s actions mirrored her turbulent journey through fame, a journey she had never anticipated. Just two years prior, she’d soared to the top with her iconic cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U, only to find herself at the center of a storm she never requested.
The photo she tore wasn’t just any photo; it was a profoundly personal symbol tied to her fraught relationship with her late mother. O’Connor had promised herself that one day, she would destroy it.

Apparently, Carlos Mencia is going to revive his career by stealing Dave Chappelle’s shtick this time.
The conversation about a comedian’s responsibility to choose their targets carefully has been going on since long before the entire comedy world knew that the Mind of Mencia host had been cribbing all of their jokes throughout his career. Mobs of protesters followed Andrew Dice Clay around throughout his heyday in the 1980s for how he repeatedly and gleefully attacked women, immigrants, racial minorities and gay people under the thin guise of humor to the point where comedy’s moral compass, George Carlin, had to step in and warn The Diceman that the same people to whom he was pandering with his “off-color” comedy probably wouldn’t love him so much if they knew he came from a Jewish family.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Osha) found no violations in their probe of an on-set accident during production of Eddie Murphy’s comedy heist film “The Pickup,” an Osha spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Saturday Night Live first aired on NBC in 1975. Created by Lorne Michaels, the late-night sketch comedy has had its ups and downs throughout the years. Each episode features a celebrity host and musical guest, some of which have been incredible additions to the series lineup, while others just didn't hit the mark. Below we chronicle a list of 10 of the worst hosts featured on SNL.

Bowen Yang didn’t have much time to relish the announcement that he’d been hired as a Saturday Night Live featured player in 2019. Within hours, the internet was sharing podcast clips of Yang’s new castmate Shane Gillis making homophobic jokes and using Asian slurs. As SNL’s first Chinese-American comic and an openly gay man, Gillis’ words put Yang smack in the middle of a conversation that he didn’t start.
He was napping when the news broke, he told The New Yorker. He woke to texts from his agent: “I’m so sorry. ... Are you awake? ... I’m so sorry.”
Lorne Michaels tried to get ahead of the scandal, calling Yang to make sure he knew what was erupting in front of them. “I don’t need you to be the poster child for racial harmony,” Michaels assured him.
Getting ahead of it himself, Yang texted Gillis.

Maybe you haven’t caught comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s Kill Tony podcast yet, but live broadcasts of his improvised talent show sold out Madison Square Garden this month — twice.
The show, tangentially part of the Joe Rogan-verse and usually recorded at Rogan’s Comedy Mothership in Austin, Texas, features Hinchcliffe, co-host Brian Redban and a collection of guest comedians serving as a judging panel for stand-up comics willing to trade exposure for potentially blistering critiques. Comics sometimes bomb, but the ones that kill can go on to bigger and better things (like appearing with Hinchcliffe at Madison Square Garden).
“I feel like I haven’t even begun to come down yet,” Hinchcliffe told Pollstar after the Msg run. “It makes me feel more human getting a call from Andrew Dice Clay, saying, ‘That was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve been having trouble sleeping because of the adrenaline.

James Woods recently told Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM radio show that he was “gently” asked not to promote Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” in which he served as an executive producer after buying rights to the non-fiction book (“American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin) upon which Nolan’s screenplay is based. The film was a cultural juggernaut with $975 million worldwide (the highest-grossing biopic in history) and won Oscars for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor and more.
“When ‘Oppenheimer’ came out, there was a discussion about my Twitter, and it was gently suggested that I basically remain invisible, which was painful,” Woods said, claiming that his outspoken support for Donald Trump over the years made him a risk for “Oppenheimer’s” release and awards campaign.
“On the other hand, I’m a pragmatic person and I thought, a lot of people put their effort into this,” Woods continued.

In the making since 2019, Page Hurwitz’s new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, taps a throng of queer notables — from Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell and Lily Tomlin to Joel Kim Booster, Fortune Feimster and Bob the Drag Queen — to show how LGBTQ funny people have left their mark and challenged others’ perceptions for more than a century.
“None of these comedians set out to change the world. They set out to make people laugh,” Hurwitz said at the film’s Tribeca Festival premiere ahead of its June 18 streaming debut. “And along the way, they did change the culture and, I think, they changed the world.”
Featuring an intergenerational and diverse cast, the documentary — set against the backdrop of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration show in 2022 — unpacks what has fueled the cycle of progress and regression that has surrounded the queer comedy community for decades.

Not every comedy series can achieve the level of satirical excellence that The Simpsons once enjoyed — especially not those shows made by Seth MacFarlane.
Television has always played an important role within the universe of The Simpsons. After all, the sadly discontinued intro sequence famously ends with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie all crowding together on the couch to watch TV together before being sucked into a black hole, turning into butterflies or getting crushed to death by Rick and Morty. And, since the show prided itself on holding up a playful, yellow, four-fingered mirror to American society and pop culture, it inevitably had to playfully jab the other comedies on TV that were inferior to what Matt Groening and his writers had cooking.
