Academy Appoints Three New Governors-at-Large: Haifaa Al-Mansour, Effie T. Brown and Annie Chang
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named three new governors-at-large to its Board of Governors: Haifaa Al-Mansour (directors branch), Effie T. Brown (producers branch) and Annie Chang. Each will begin a three-year term with the start of the Academy’s 2025–2026 fiscal year.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Haifaa, Effie and Annie to the Academy’s Board of Governors,” said Academy President Janet Yang in a statement. “Their wealth of experiences, perspectives and dedication will be vital to our ongoing global and industry outreach efforts.”

Yang also thanked outgoing governors-at-large DeVon Franklin and Rodrigo García for their six years of service.

Governors-at-large, like their branch-elected counterparts, may serve up to two three-year terms — either consecutively or non-consecutively — followed by a two-year hiatus. After the hiatus, they may serve up to two additional terms, with a lifetime cap of 12 years.

The Board of Governors is responsible for setting the Academy’s strategic vision,...

Academy Board of Governors Election Dominated by Incumbents, Including Marlee Matlin, Jason Reitman and Jason Blum
Image
Incumbents once again dominated elections for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors, with 10 board members being reelected to their positions and three past governors returning to the board after a hiatus.

Marlee Matlin, Jason Reitman and Jason Blum were among the governors who won reelection in balloting that was done by 17 of the Academy’s 19 branches and announced on Wednesday.

This is the third year in a row in which incumbents won in the vast majority of board races, following two years of substantial turnover after stricter term limits forced many longtime governors off the board.

The only first-time governors to be elected by votes from each branch were Peter Kujawski, who replaced Donna Gigliotti in the Executives Branch; Gigi Williams, who replaced Howard Berger in the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch; Carter Burwell, who replaced Charles Fox in the Music Branch; and Andrew Roberts,...

Film Academy Board Election: Focus Features Chief Among Four Voted in for First Time, ‘Ed Wood’ Co-Scribe One of Three Returning After Hiatus
Image
The results are in after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held elections for 17 seats on its 55-person board of governors, and the new board — which will be seated later this summer — will include four rookies, three comeback kids and 10 re-elected incumbents.

Joining the board for the first time will be Focus Features chief Peter Kujawski (executives branch), repacling Donna Gigliotti, who was unable to seek re-election because she served two three-year terms and now must take a rules-mandated two-year hiatus from the board; and three Oscar nominees: the Coen brothers’ favorite composer Carter Burwell (music), replacing Charles Fox, who hit the rules-mandated max of 12 total years of service on the board and thus was ineligible to run again; Ilm VFX supervisor Andrew Roberts (visual effects), succeeding Paul Debevec, who did not seek re-election; and David Fincher’s go-to makeup artist Gigi Williams (makeup artists/hairstylists), filling the seat of Howard Berger,...

Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Juliette Binoche, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro Among Additional Names to Sign Open Letter Condemning Industry Silence Over Gaza (Exclusive)
Image
Joaquin Phoenix, Juliette Binoche, Pedro Pascal, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro are among a group of figures to have added their names to a letter condemning the film industry for its “silence” over the ongoing and deadly impact of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The letter, published on the first day of Cannes and initially signed by more than 370 actors and filmmakers, also condemned Israel’s killing of Fatma Hassona, the protagonist of festival-bound doc “Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk.”

The new signatories also includes the likes of Rooney Mara, Jim Jarmusch, Omar Sy, Peter Straughan, Camille Cottin, Michael Moore, Boots Riley and Alice Rohrwacher.

The letter urged cinema — which it said was a “breeding ground for socially committed works” — to use its art form to “draw lessons from history, to make films that are committed” and to be “present to protect oppressed voices.”

Serenity Composer David Newman Talks Bringing The Firefly Movies Music To Vinyl For The First Time
Image
David Newman's score for the Firefly follow-up movie Serenity is now available for pre-order on vinyl. Screen Rant interviewed Newman about his work on the movie. Newman reflects on the challenges of creating the score for the film, showcasing his innovative approach to musical storytelling.

The 2005 sci-fi film Serenity had to strike an impossible balance, both catering to the exceptionally dedicated cult following of a one-season TV show while still welcoming moviegoers who had no idea what Firefly was. Creatively, it succeeded, but underwhelming box office numbers quieted talks of a sequel. Nearly 20 years later, and the cast of that moviepeople like Nathan Fillion (The Rookie), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), Summer Glau (Arrow), and Gina Torres (Suits)are still regularly asked if, when, and how they will reprise their roles.

It's somewhat on brand, then, that composer David Newmans score for the movie is finally making it to vinyl courtesy of Varse Sarabande.

Fargo Season 5 Soundtrack Guide - Every Song & When It Plays
Image
The Fargo season 5 soundtrack has a ton of great needle-drops in between pieces from its foreboding original score. The use of licensed music in FX's Fargo ties back to the classic Coen brothers movie it was based on, which featured songs by Merle Haggard and Boy George. Fargo season 5 includes songs by such renowned artists as Yes, Rush, and Marilyn Manson.

The Fargo season 5 soundtrack is full of great needle drops. The original Coen brothers movie is remembered for its creepy, foreboding score by regular Coen collaborator Carter Burwell, but it had its fair share of licensed music, too. “Big City” by Merle Haggard can be heard in the King of Clubs when Jerry meets with Carl and Gaear. Boy George’s cover version of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” is playing in the garage while Shep works. Carl and his escort watch a live nightclub performance of...

Have the Coen Brothers Broken Up For Good?
Image
When The Tragedy of Macbeth was released in 2021, there was some cause for concern. After 18 films, including such classics as Raising Arizona, Fargo, and The Big Lebowski, Joel Coen, for the first time, offered audiences a movie that did not feature the involvement of his younger brother, Ethan Coen. However, Joel Coen’s sole directing credit wasn’t a first for the filmmaker.

From his debut, 1984's Blood Simple, through 2003's Intolerable Cruelty, Joel Coen was credited as director, but it was understood that the films were equal collaborations with his sibling, who had co-written, and produced all the projects as well. Ethan Coen is also listed as the uncredited director of each film on IMDb. In fact, it wasn't until 2004's The Ladykillers that both brothers were credited equally.

But the 2021 Shakespeare adaptation, which contained a tour de force performance from Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth, was the first truly solo Joel Coen production.

Finestkind Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: Youtube)

What’s Good: Jenna Ortega, Tommy Lee Jones and Ben Foster are always a delight.

What’s Bad: The movie doesn’t know what it wants to be, or what it is, and the entire plot feels pointless.

Loo Break: The first hour and 20 minutes is as disposable as they come, so take your time at the loo.

Watch or Not?: It is best if you avoid this one, there are many better films that are actually good, especially in this end of the year period.

Language: English (with subtitles).

When Focus Features moved Ethan Coen‘s Drive-Away Dolls from the fall festival slate to it’s current February 23rd release date we can imagine that Sundance and Berlinale programmers started salivating and wouldn’t it be a swell narrative if Ethan returns to Park City exactly four decades after launching his career with Grand Prize winning Blood Simple? 16 Biggest Changes Twilight's Movies Made To The Books
Image
The Twilight movies made some changes from the books, including adding the Cullen Crest, which symbolizes unity among the family. Edward's backstory as a vigilante vampire and Bella's knowledge of his past were better explained in the Twilight novel. The Twilight movies left out crucial details, such as Alice Cullen's backstory and the true nature of the battle in Breaking Dawn.

The Twilight Saga brought Stephenie Meyer's novel series to life, but turning a book into a movie is always hard work, and the movies made many changes to the books. With the series spanning four lengthy books, there's a lot of ground to cover in the world of Twilight, so it's not surprising that the writers and directors of the Twilight Saga had to change some things from the novels or completely leave plot points out.

Although the Twilight movies were mostly loyal to the source material,...

‘Finestkind’ Review: Jenna Ortega Is the Least Likely Drug Dealer in Movie History — and It Gets Worse from There
Image
I don’t know where to start on “Finestkind,” the saccharine, incomprehensible northeastern America fishing family drama from writer-director Brian Helgeland. As I watched this turgid muddle, a messy ball of nonsensical threads and worse performances, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Roger Ebert’s old maxim: No good film is too long, and no bad film is too short.

But what about a film so driven off course it needs a come to Jesus moment? “Finestkind” is that sort of picture. Clunky, nauseating, and perfunctory, it’s shocking that before the World Premiere screening in Toronto Helgeland called the movie a deeply personal work, the type of film he wished had been his first, and the kind he fears might be his last.

The introduction was enough to make you hope for a merely mindlessly entertaining flick. Unfortunately, “Finestkind” doesn’t even pass that lowest of bars.

The Brilliant Sound Design of No Country for Old Men
Image
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, those famous filmmaking siblings adapted the script for No Country for Old Men (2007) from a novel of the same name, written by Cormac McCarthy. That's one of the greatest American novelists of his time, with other hit pieces of literature under his belt like The Road and, of course, Blood Meridian. But regarding No Country for Old Men, it's easily the best adaptation of a McCarthy novel to ever hit the silver screen. That can of course be attributed to the individual plot points and thought-out character dynamics developed by McCarthy. But film is a totally separate beast, and the Coens had quite the task when adapting the difficult novelist.

Often cited as the Hemingway of his generation, Cormac McCarthy had an idiosyncratic writing style that featured minimalist prose, hard-hitting themes, and instances of aestheticized violence which almost seemed to influence the Coens. Think...

The 40 Best Movie Scores of the 21st Century
Image
It goes without saying that movie music has come a mighty long way in the last 100 years or so, but the first two decades of the 21st century have nevertheless been an extraordinarily active and evolutionary stretch of time for film scores. Without discounting the bold and formative achievements of old masters like Bernard Hermann and Toru Takemitsu, it’s fair to say that the rise of independent cinema and the challenge of the digital age have provoked a true paradigm shift in how we think about musical accompaniment.

Rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi have used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell have risen to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. Indeed, some of the very best movie scores in recent memory (including the...

‘Drive-Away Dolls’ trailer: Love is a sleigh ride to hell in Ethan Coen’s solo directorial effort [Watch]
Image
Ethan Coen’s first narrative feature film as a solo director looks an awful lot like some of the beloved comedic collaborations Coen made with his brother, Joel Coen, during their decades-long career together – particularly “Raising Arizona” and “Fargo.” On Friday, Focus Features released the first trailer for “Drive-Away Dolls,” the new comedy thriller Ethan Coen directed by himself and also co-wrote and produced with his wife, Tricia Cooke.

A sample of some of the comedy on display in the feature, which focuses on two young women (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who run afoul of a bunch of inept criminals – including one shady figure played by Matt Damon:

Damon’s character: “Who are you?”

Viswanathan’s Marian: “Democrats.”

It’s funnier in the trailer, watch it below.

According to Focus, “Drive-Away Dolls” is a “comedy caper” that “follows Jamie (Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend,...

First Trailer for Ethan Coen’s Lesbian Road Trip Comedy Drive-Away Dolls
Image
After directing together for over three decades, Joel and Ethan Coen have parted ways for their recent projects. The former helmed the black-and-white Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth, while the latter premiered his documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind at Cannes last year and is awaiting a release, then followed it up with Drive-Away Dolls, a lesbian road trip comedy that will arrive this September.

Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, shot by Ari Wegner, scored by Carter Burwell, and starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon, the first trailer has now arrived online after being attached to Asteroid City. In an interview with Collider, Coen and Cooke also reveal the film is only 83 minutes, has “a lot of sex stuff,” and is part of a trilogy of queer B movies they will make.

Here’s the synopsis: “This comedy caper follows Jamie,...

Get a Taste of Flamin’ Hot’s Music with The Big Score Clips [Exclusive]
Image
Hollywood Records’ The Big Score is back with another episode, this time diving into the music of the biographical drama film Flamin’ Hot. The movie was adapted from a 2013 memoir by Richard Montañez called A Boy, A Burrito, and A Cookie: from Janitor to Executive, which chronicles the rise of Montañez through the ranks of the Frito-Lay corporation. Eva Longoria directed the film, which stars Jesse Garcia as Montañez.

The music for Flamin’ Hot was written by Marcelo Zarvos, whose other recent work includes White Men Can’t Jump and Big George Foreman. To support the debatably true story of Flamin’ Hot, Zarvos leaned into a culturally specific score meant to honor Mexican American tradition and even re-scored the iconic “20th Century Fox Fanfare” in a Mexican style to set the tone of the film. Screen Rant is excited to premiere clips from Zarvos’ episode of The Big Score. Check them out below.

New Ethan Coen movie ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ gets fall release date
Image
Ethan Coen’s first narrative movie as a solo director will arrive in theaters this year. On Monday, Focus Features announced Coen’s road-trip comedy “Drive-Away Dolls” will debut on September 22, putting it on track to potentially debut at one of the late summer’s big film festivals in Venice, Telluride, Colorado, or Toronto.

Coen co-wrote and produced the film with Tricia Cooke, his wife. The pair previously collaborated together on the 2022 documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble In Mind.” According to Deadline, “Drive-Away Dolls” “follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.” The cast includes Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan...

Ethan Coen’s ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ Starring Margaret Qualley & Geraldine Viswanathan, Lands Sept 22 Release & Adds Matt Damon & Pedro Pascal
Image
So, the Coen Brothers have “broken up,” gone their own way, and aren’t making films anymore, right? One imagines the truth is more nuanced and complicated than that. Take Carter Burwell, their longtime composer. He said Ethan Coen doesn’t “want To make movies anymore,” and Joel Coen himself said last year that “none of the decisions are definitive.” It sounds like they’re taking a break from one another in the meantime?

While watching Academy Award-nominated “The Banshees of Inisherin,” whenever I thought I would cry, I would laugh at the next scene as the film cleverly balanced comedy and melancholy. One element of the storytelling that helped guide that balance was the soundtrack composed by Carter Burwell. And soon, fans of the score will have a chance to buy it on vinyl, courtesy of the fine folks at Mondo, Searchlight, and Hollywood Records.

2023 Oscars Best Original Score nominees: 2 past champs, 2 veterans and a trio of rookies
Image
The films in the running for the 2023 Best Original Score Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our current odds indicate that “Babylon” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “The Fabelmans” (4/1), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2).

Four of the seven individual artists included in this lineup are returning contenders, with the newcomer subset consisting of Son Lux bandmates and fellow “Everything Everywhere All at Once” nominees Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott. Bhatia and Chang are two of only nine Asian composers to ever achieve academy recognition and could become the first such champions since A. R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) in 2009.

John Williams (“The Fabelmans”) stands out from the category veterans in that he has competed for this award 48 times...

Here’s the low-key Oscar rematch you might not be aware of
Image
“Babylon” only has three Oscar nominations, but if you go by the odds, it will win two of them: Best Production Design, which it’s dominated all season, and Best Original Score, where Justin Hurwitz has recently lost some ground to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” composed by Volker Bertelmann. That race could come down to the wire and wind up a whole lot closer than the composers’ first Oscar showdown.

Hurwitz and Bertelmann have faced off at the Oscars before, though you might not realize it at first glance. Bertelmann also performs under the name Hauschka, which was how he was credited for his “Lion” (2016) score, co-written with Dustin O’Halloran. That season, Hauschka and O’Halloran lost the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, BAFTA and Oscar to Hurwitz, who swept for “La La Land.”

While it was obvious Hurwitz would win the Oscar back then, that’s not the case this time around.

Oscars Best Original Score overview: One rookie battles veteran composers in highly competitive music match-up
Image
Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.

Four of this year’s nominees line-up with Best Picture, with one very notable newcomer to the category.

Watch 4 exclusive interview with Best Score Oscar nominees: ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ ‘Babylon,’ ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’
Image
The final stretch of the 2023 Oscar season has started with voters casting their ballots for the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. All season long, Gold Derby has been interviewing dozens of the nominees, including four contenders for Best Score. Click on each composer’s name below to watch each of these 20-minute interviews.

Volker Bertelmann, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’

Composer Bertelmann grew up reading the 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front’ when he was in school, which served as the basis for the 1930 Best Picture winner and the new 2022 Netflix adaptation. He recalls the advice that director Edward Berger gave him about how he wanted to film to sound: “I want to have a music for the stomach of Paul Bäumer, who’s the main protagonist. I want to have destruction. And I want to have a snare that is played by somebody who can’t play the snare…...

How Many Oscars Does ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Actually Deserve to Win?
Image
Almost exactly one year ago, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” premiered at SXSW. The sophomore feature from the two-headed directorial entity known as Daniels — aka Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — had plenty of hype going into the festival, as the GenX filmmaker had already garnered a decade of fans for their music video work, with bonus points for the silly-sweet gamble of their 2016 feature debut “Swiss Army Man.” Yet even the visionary concept of an island castaway riding a farting corpse to freedom couldn’t have prepared audiences for the cultural phenomenon to come.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was an instant sensation with almost as many layers as the multiverses strewn across in its plot. It’s an innovative and hilarious sci-fi comedy about the messiness of modern life, a touching exploration of intergenerational Asian American identity, and a rousing showcase for Asian actors long under-appreciated by the industry.

The 2023 Oscar Nominated Scores Ranked
Image
A great score can not only make a film better, but make it truly iconic. The Academy Awards have awarded prizes for their scores back in 1934, and previous winners like Lawrence of Arabia, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Purple Rain, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Up, and last year's Dune wouldn't be the same without their brilliant scores. This year's nominees in the Best Original Score are a mixture of old favorites, with previous nominees Carter Burwell and John Williams competing against more experimental scores from the likes of Volker Bertelmann, Son Lux, and Justin Hurwitz. Each of these scores was integral to their individual films in this very strong year for this category. Let's take a look at this year's picks, and rank these five Oscar nominees.

Oscars Best Picture nominee profile: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is a dark horse looking to repeat Golden Globes success
Image
If there’s going to be a surprise win in Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, look no further than “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Aside from its Golden Globe win for Best Film Musical/Comedy, “Banshees” failed to take the top prize with any major group this season, but that didn’t stop it from mounting upsets in other key categories. If the dark horse spirit that earned it major Globe and BAFTA wins continues into Oscar night, director/writer/producer Martin McDonagh could find himself with his first Oscar statuette in a feature film category.

McDonagh is already an Oscar winner for his 2006 live-action short “Six Shooter,” but he came up short for his work on the feature films “In Bruges” in 2009 and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018. He was nominated in Best Original Screenplay for both films and then in Best Picture as a producer of the latter,...

In a Close Oscar Score Race, Sentimental Fave John Williams Faces Potential First-Time Winners, Including Carter Burwell
Image
In what may be the most difficult-to-predict score competition in years, the original-music Oscar could go to a sentimental favorite, a past nominee or the newcomer to the race. Academy members begin voting today.

Legendary composer John Williams broke records again by becoming the most nominated living person, earning the highest number of nominations ever in the music categories, and becoming the oldest nominee ever for a competitive award. He is 91.

His nomination for “The Fabelmans” surprised some outsiders, as his fairly spare score is often overshadowed by the several classical pieces performed by Mitzi (Michelle Williams), the character based on director Steven Spielberg’s piano-playing mom. But it passed the 35% rule — that is, more than a third of the total musical content must be original dramatic score — or it would have been disqualified by the Academy’s strict music-branch executive committee.

Williams is enjoying more acclaim than ever, not...
