In his 2024 film "Dune: Part Two," director Denis Villeneuve noticeably removed a character from Frank Herbert's original novel. In the book "Dune," while Paul Atreides and his pregnant mother Jessica are hiding out among the Fremen, Jessica gives birth to Paul's young sister Alia. Because Jessica drank the spiritually-connected Water of Life while Alia was still in utero, the little baby was born with an adult intellect and almost immediately grew into a toddler. She ended up playing a larger role in Herbert's novel. The toddler Alia was portrayed by Alicia Witt in David Lynch's 1984 "Dune" film adaptation.

Villeneuve, however, removed Alia from the narrative because it would be too difficult to haul a real-life baby out to the movie's hot, sandy filming locations in the deserts of Jordan. Instead, the story for "Dune" was re-written so that Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) received psychic messages from Alia from inside the womb.

In the era of remakes and reboots, we've gotten a lot of news about horror movies and their potential revivals. The cult classic and underrated gem Urban Legend is the next in line for a reboot. The 1998 slasher film was buried underneath the success of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which have also been remade and rebooted.

What we know so far about the Urban Legend reboot

Gary Dauberman is set to produce after working on other horror films such as 2025's Until Dawn, 2017's It, as well as multiple movies in The Conjuring Universe. Alongside Dauberman is Neal Moritz, who produced the original Urban Legend and also I Know What You Did Last Summer. He is reportedly in discussions to potentially produce as well. In a period of time where we’re getting new Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer movies, it seemed a matter of time before Urban Legend would take its place in the queue. The original spawned a sequel or two, but my memory of it is it’s a fairly forgettable film that very much followed what was becoming a bit of a horror land rush at the time. Jamie Blanks directed, and a pre-House Of Gucci Jared Leto is in the ensemble.

Also in there? Joshua Jackson Alicia Witt and Tara Reid. There’s a trilogy of Urban Legend films, and I’ve actually watched them all, but can recall very little.

And now the whole thing is coming back.

Five years ago, it was announced that Screen Gems had hired What Keeps You Alive writer/director Colin Minihan to take the helm of a reboot of the 1998 slasher Urban Legend, the idea being to create “an iconic new slasher for the digital age in a world where internet urban legends are born and move at a terrifying pace.” Minihan’s reboot got far enough into development that Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara were in talks to star in the film… but then, it all fell apart. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Screen Gems is going to give this Urban Legend reboot idea another try, bringing in genre regular Gary Dauberman to produce the film under his Coin Operated banner. Neal H. Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is in talks to produce as well, while Shanrah Wakefield has been hired to write the screenplay.

Screen Gems is developing a new take on ’90s slasher Urban Legend, and THR reports that Shanrah Wakefield (Killer in Red) will write the script with Gary Dauberman (Until Dawn) producing. Neal Moritz is also in talks to produce, with the reboot in early development.

THR details, “While plot details are unknown, sources say the story aims to be an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.”

In the Jamie Blanks-directed 1998 slasher starring Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, and Rebecca Gayheart, a college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to urban legends.

The original slasher was followed by two sequels, Urban Legends: Final Cut, released theatrically in 2000, and the direct-to-video film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in 2005.

The film recently premiered on Hulu, and has climbed up the charts of the streamer in only a matter of days. At the time of writing, it sits on the top spot of the platform's most popular films, above major blockbusters like Avatar and Titanic, and animation icons like The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Finding Nemo.

Yet, one movie from last year truly rose above the rest. That film is Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. After leaving theaters, fans eagerly waited for its arrival on streaming. Now, that day is finally here.

Longlegs is now available to stream, but not for everyone. On Jan. 8, 2025, the smash-hit horror film became available to watch on Prime Video but only in select locations. Those locations are Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland. With only these two locations having access at the moment, this leaves fans outside those regions in suspense. They're stuck having to resort to alternative methods to watch the film.

For example, the only way people in the U.S. can watch Longlegs is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

Per Deadline, Monroe is set to star in Brides, a horror film written and directed by Okuno. Longlegs distributor, Neon, plans to release the movie theatrically. Brides follows "Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband, who travel to a remote Italian villa where the villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally." Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu will serve as producers for Brides. Okuno made her feature debut with Watcher in 2022, a psychological thriller starring Monroe.

A couple of months ago, we learned that Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II and A Quiet Place: Day One) is set to star in The Monster, a horror thriller that Darren Lynn Bousman will be directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writers of Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. It was announced soon after that Lauren Lavera – who played heroine Sienna in Terrifier 2 and the recently released Terrifier 3 – was joining Hounsou in the cast. Now, Deadline reveals that Alicia Witt (Longlegs), Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers), Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers), Mia Healey (The Wilds), Michael Lombardi (The Deuce), David Call (Insidious: The Red Door), Victor Del Rio (Precognito), Cedric Benjamin (Luke Cage), Zac Jaffee (Hustlers), Renés Rivera (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Hari Bhaskar (First Shift), Kristina Krasniqi (Celebrity Ghost Stories), and rapper Jacob Lukas Anderson, a.k.a. Prof, are also in the cast.

For starters, Paramount’s Republic Pictures label has boarded worldwide rights on the film. Additionally, Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers) has signed on to co-star in The Monster.

As Deadline notes in their report, this will mark Gina Philips’ first on-screen role in eight years. In addition to playing Trish alongside Justin Long in Jeepers Creepers, Philips’ horror credits also include Deadly Invasion: The Killer Bee Nightmare (1995), and Dead & Breakfast (2004).

Nicolas Cage is unrecognizable as the title character in the horror movie Longlegs. Key special effects makeup artist Felix Fox and Harlow Macfarlane worked 2½ hours every day to transform Cage into the satanic serial killer.

“There was about four designs,” Fox said. “What they settled on after we tested on was that we would go a little bit more extreme.”

Fox said the original concepts were less pale white and less cosmetically altered. The final Longlegs pays homage to Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera, she said. Furthermore, they had to age Longlegs from the 1970s to the ‘90s.

“He has two looks for it,” Fox continued. “One is the ‘70s and one is with more of the beauty makeup, a little bit of blue eyeshadow.”
