Photo by Tina Turnbow Alicia Witt has played her piano-driven pop-rock music all over the world, including at the renowned Grand Ole Opry. Her music has been described as ‘sharply personal, boldly melodic pop originals in the Carole King/Billy Joel vein’ (Philadelphia Inquirer). She most recently starred opposite Nicolas Cage in the smash hit Longlegs, which grossed over $100 million in its theatrical release and has become the biggest indie movie of 2024. Last year she appeared on Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” winning her first episode with her rendition of “Over The Rainbow” and prompting guesses that she was Vanessa Williams, Sarah McLachlan, and Sara Bareilles. In his 2024 film "Dune: Part Two," director Denis Villeneuve noticeably removed a character from Frank Herbert's original novel. In the book "Dune," while Paul Atreides and his pregnant mother Jessica are hiding out among the Fremen, Jessica gives birth to Paul's young sister Alia. Because Jessica drank the spiritually-connected Water of Life while Alia was still in utero, the little baby was born with an adult intellect and almost immediately grew into a toddler. She ended up playing a larger role in Herbert's novel. The toddler Alia was portrayed by Alicia Witt in David Lynch's 1984 "Dune" film adaptation.
Villeneuve, however, removed Alia from the narrative because it would be too difficult to haul a real-life baby out to the movie's hot, sandy filming locations in the deserts of Jordan. Instead, the story for "Dune" was re-written so that Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) received psychic messages from Alia from inside the womb.

In the era of remakes and reboots, we've gotten a lot of news about horror movies and their potential revivals. The cult classic and underrated gem Urban Legend is the next in line for a reboot. The 1998 slasher film was buried underneath the success of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which have also been remade and rebooted.
What we know so far about the Urban Legend reboot
Gary Dauberman is set to produce after working on other horror films such as 2025's Until Dawn, 2017's It, as well as multiple movies in The Conjuring Universe. Alongside Dauberman is Neal Moritz, who produced the original Urban Legend and also I Know What You Did Last Summer. He is reportedly in discussions to potentially produce as well. Shanrah Wakefield, known for a few Lifetime movies, is writing the script. Additionally, Screen Gems is behind this new take.

The massive box office success of the recent Scream movies led to an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel (check out the first trailer here), and we now have word that another '90s slasher movie is set for the revival treatment, with Screen Gems in the process of developing a new Urban Legends movie.
THR reports that writer/actress Shanrah Wakefield (Wrong Swipe) has been hired to pen the script, with Gary Dauberman, whose video game adaptation Until Dawn opens this weekend, on board as a producer via his Coin Operated banner. Neal Moritz, who was one of the producers of the original, is also in negotiations to produce.

Hollywood follows up a new Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer film with an Urban Legend reboot as well. More here.
In a period of time where we’re getting new Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer movies, it seemed a matter of time before Urban Legend would take its place in the queue. The original spawned a sequel or two, but my memory of it is it’s a fairly forgettable film that very much followed what was becoming a bit of a horror land rush at the time. Jamie Blanks directed, and a pre-House Of Gucci Jared Leto is in the ensemble.
Also in there? Joshua Jackson Alicia Witt and Tara Reid. There’s a trilogy of Urban Legend films, and I’ve actually watched them all, but can recall very little.
And now the whole thing is coming back.

Did you ever hear the one about Hollywood consistently banking on sequels, requels, reboots and familiar IP to bring in box office dollars? It's not exactly folklore since it's something very well-known and very true, but it is the appropriate way to drop news that a slasher film from the late '90s teen horror movie boom is making a comeback. Urban Legend was released in the wake of the success of 1996's Scream and now another take will follow in that franchise's successful footsteps in hopes of striking gold once again.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of 1998's Urban Legend is in early development at Sony Screen Gems, with Shanrah Wakefield being tasked to tackle the screenplay. Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote the Until Dawn video game adaptation that is opening this Friday, will produce through his Coin Operated banner. Meanwhile Neal H. Five years ago, it was announced that Screen Gems had hired What Keeps You Alive writer/director Colin Minihan to take the helm of a reboot of the 1998 slasher Urban Legend, the idea being to create “an iconic new slasher for the digital age in a world where internet urban legends are born and move at a terrifying pace.” Minihan’s reboot got far enough into development that Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara were in talks to star in the film… but then, it all fell apart. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Screen Gems is going to give this Urban Legend reboot idea another try, bringing in genre regular Gary Dauberman to produce the film under his Coin Operated banner. Neal H. Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is in talks to produce as well, while Shanrah Wakefield has been hired to write the screenplay.

Screen Gems is developing a new take on ’90s slasher Urban Legend, and THR reports that Shanrah Wakefield (Killer in Red) will write the script with Gary Dauberman (Until Dawn) producing. Neal Moritz is also in talks to produce, with the reboot in early development.
THR details, “While plot details are unknown, sources say the story aims to be an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.”
In the Jamie Blanks-directed 1998 slasher starring Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, and Rebecca Gayheart, a college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to urban legends.
The original slasher was followed by two sequels, Urban Legends: Final Cut, released theatrically in 2000, and the direct-to-video film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in 2005.
The original Urban Legend was written by the late Silvio Horta.

Screen Gems’ 1990s slasher movie Urban Legend is getting a modern era reboot.

Two and a Half Men was a rating success for most of its run. That was until Charlie Sheen was fired from the show. Even the usually charming Ashton Kutcher couldn’t save the show when his Walden Schmidt replaced Sheen’s Charlie Harper as the central protagonist. Sheen’s character was killed off in the show.
However, it wasn’t just Charlie Harper who faced the worst fate in the series. The show also did another character dirty during its run. Missi Pyle played the role of Jake’s teacher, Dolores Pasternak, in her first appearance. She gets entangled with Charlie and gets dumped, as usual.

This post contains spoilers for the "Dune" saga.
In Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) telepathically communicates with her fetus, Alia, who, along with her, is transformed after being exposed to the Water of Life. As a fetus, Alia is strangely in tune with Jessica's plans regarding her son, Paul (Timothée Chalamet), as she actively urges her mother towards a distinct path. In one of Paul's many visions, we get a glimpse of a grown-up Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy), whose presence is set up to be monumental in the tense, bloodstained chapters to come. Notably, though, the same character is fleshed out differently in David Lynch's "Dune." There, Alia (Alicia Witt) is a book-accurate superpowered toddler who yeets Baron Harkonnen (Kenneth McMillan) across Arrakis with the sheer power of her mind.
While Villeneuve has been closely following Frank Herbert's "Dune" book series for the most part,...

Osgood Perkins'Longlegs was one of the most anticipated horror films of 2024, and now that it's arrived on streaming, horror fans are returning to take another look. Considered artistic and cerebral, Perkins and the film's primary antagonist (portrayed by Nicolas Cage) did an excellent job provoking viewers to keep thinking long after the last credit rolled off the screen.

Having earned his stripes as a TV writer on shows like "Charles in Charge" and "My Two Dads," Lorre has been a staple of the industry for over 40 years. He's proven time and again that he understands the key to finding commercial success, despite the many valid criticisms of his reliance on formulaic humor. Hence, we're here to highlight the five best Chuck Lorre shows,...

2024 delivered an incredible lineup of horror films, including A Quiet Place: Day One, Abigail, Alien: Romulus, Heretic, MaXXXine, Trap, Smile 2, The Substance and Nosferatu. Yet, one movie from last year truly rose above the rest. That film is Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. After leaving theaters, fans eagerly waited for its arrival on streaming. Now, that day is finally here.
Longlegs is now available to stream, but not for everyone. On Jan. 8, 2025, the smash-hit horror film became available to watch on Prime Video but only in select locations. Those locations are Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland. With only these two locations having access at the moment, this leaves fans outside those regions in suspense. They're stuck having to resort to alternative methods to watch the film.
For example, the only way people in the U.S. can watch Longlegs is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.

Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Cage, Naomi Watts Remember David Lynch: ‘Brave, Brilliant, and a Maverick’
Numerous leaders in entertainment, celebrities, and former collaborators have mourned the death of David Lynch, the multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker whose spectacularly unnerving work fused dreams and nightmares and forever changed the landscape of movie-making.
Steven Spielberg, who featured Lynch in his semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, remembered him as “a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade. He added, “The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

A year where the most celebrated films are as diverse as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Smile 2” is a year movie-lovers are going to remember for a long time. The industry’s and the audience’s acceptance of wildly disparate films allowed for a host of memorable, unique performances in 2024 that challenged the norms of motion picture performance and gave many actors their most iconic roles to date.
It’s hard to narrow down all the greats; by the time this retrospective was already getting out of hand, it became clear that some wonderful turns were somehow, despite their brilliance, not going to make the cut. But these are the performances that stood out amongst the standouts, in some of the best — and arguably one or two of the worst — movies of the 2024.

It's been a great year for actress Margaret Qualley. She starred in three big movies in 2024: Drive Away Dolls, directed by Ethan Cohen; the anthology film Kinds of Kindness from Yorgos Lanthimos; and The Substance, Coralie Fargeat's sophomore effort, which saw Qualley play a "younger, better" version of Demi Moore's Elisabeth. Next, Qualley will take the lead role in Victorian Psycho, starring alongside Thomasin McKenzie, which will be released by acclaimed indie banner A24.
Deadline reports that the project, first announced in October, will be distributed by A24 and is set to begin production in March 2025.
The plot synopsis reads:
In 1858, a young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty (Qualley) arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Winifred's responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family's history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies. Michael Rosenbaum gained his cult following by playing Lex Luthor in Smallville, but he already proved he could play the villain in Urban Legend. Rosenbaum was just as impudent in that film, which made his character’s death scene so satisfying.
Tubi is streaming Urban Legend for free this January. Launched at the peak of the 90s slasher trend, the film was criticized for its glaring similarities to Scream. Urban Legend was a commercial hit (earning $72.5 million against its $14 million budget), but it remains one of 1998’s worst-rated horror movies. Released that same year, Disturbing Behavior, The Faculty, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer were similarly panned by audiences and critics. However, these films fueled the careers of budding stars Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood, and Jennifer Love Hewitt; Smallville fans also look to Urban Legend as a highlight of Michael Rosenbaum’s career.

A Marvel star has been cast, along with six other actors, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Shiver, a young adult fantasy romance novel that has drawn comparisons to Twilight. The paranormal romance in the Twilight book series written by Stephanie Meyer became a popular culture phenomenon, which led to movie adaptations starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The series' fantastical world and the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black continues to resonate years later.
Shiver was first published in 2009 and was followed by three sequels in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. Osgood Perkins‘ “Longlegs” walks a tricky line between realism and theatricality, balancing a heightened visual style — characterized by extreme wide-angle lensing and off-kilter compositions that keep the audience on edge — with meticulous recreations of 1970s and 1990s clothes, cars, and environments. Add to that the wild tonal swings between mortifying horror, sly comedy, and somber poignancy — plus a go-for-broke performance by Nicholas Cage in the title role that’s extreme even for the guy who brought us Castor Troy and Sailor Ripley — and you’ve got a filmmaking tightrope act dependent on a perfect calibration of every craft.
That was particularly true of the hair and makeup departments, which were tasked with bringing a number of challenging characters to life, not just the gruesome lead. IndieWire previously spoke with Perkins and special effects makeup artist Felix Fox about the conception and execution of Cage’s uniquely horrifying serial killer, whose...

Nicolas Cage is unrecognizable as the title character in the horror movie Longlegs. Key special effects makeup artist Felix Fox and Harlow Macfarlane worked 2½ hours every day to transform Cage into the satanic serial killer.
“There was about four designs,” Fox said. “What they settled on after we tested on was that we would go a little bit more extreme.”
Fox said the original concepts were less pale white and less cosmetically altered. The final Longlegs pays homage to Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera, she said. Furthermore, they had to age Longlegs from the 1970s to the ‘90s.
“He has two looks for it,” Fox continued. “One is the ‘70s and one is with more of the beauty makeup, a little bit of blue eyeshadow.”

It’s been over 20 years since cartoonist Peter Morley-Souter invented the only rule of the internet everyone actually agrees on: Rule No. 34, which says that if a thing exists, there is an X-rated version of it. It was true then and it’s true now. But I think the time has finally come to tack on an important addendum: Rule No. 34A: This also applies to Christmas movies.
Made-for-tv Christmas movies actually have a lot in common with adult entertainment. They’re cheap, they hit the spot and there’s more than you could ever possibly watch in one lifetime. And apparently you can make them about literally anything. The horror genre has always been a big source of entertainment in film. It has the power to dominate the box office, with revenue streams of up to almost a billion dollars. Sometimes, however, certain films come and go before being given a real chance at exposure. This could be caused by clashing with another release similar to itself. It could boil down to the content of the film as well, where the story was too silly and obscure.
For the horror genre, many factors can cause films to become a little obscure and disappear. Whether or not a horror film gets forgotten, some manage to retain a cult following.

It can be difficult to market a film. A trailer can be the best way to garner interest, although this can be undone when the promotional material offers spoilers to lure in potential viewers (as evidenced with many Terminator sequels.) It is a credit to Neon for operating a “less is more” approach for Longlegs, relying on an unsettling atmosphere conveyed in their cryptic videos as an effective primer for the feature.
Set during the ‘90s, FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Nicolas Cage). Uncovering a series of occult clues, she is intent on stopping him before he claims more lives.
