It was “Dog Day Afternoon” in miniature, though with more loony-tunes firepower. On Feb. 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis, a disgruntled resident of Indianapolis, walked into the offices of the Meridian Mortgage Company and took one of its executives, Dick Hall, hostage. He wired the sawed-off muzzle of a 12-gauge Winchester shotgun to the back of Hall’s head. One end of the wire was connected to the trigger; the other end was wrapped around Hall’s neck. This meant that if a police officer tried to shoot Kiritsis, or if Hall tried to escape, the gun would go off and kill him.
With that gun poised, at any moment, to blow Hall to smithereens, Kiritsis then walked him out of the building and into a car (trailed by random onlookers and a news camera), and they drove to Kiritsis’s home in the Crestwood Apartments complex, where they holed up for 63 hours.

When it comes to the best vampire movies ever made, there are a few that automatically make everyone's Top 10 list. The Lost Boys, Near Dark, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Dracula easily come to mind, and rightfully so. They're generational classics that left an indelible mark on the horror genre. Among them all, however, is a 1985 classic that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary that to this day remains one of the best, as is evident by fans taking to social media to mark the occasion.
Released on August 2, 1985, Fright Night came along at a time when vampires were experiencing a lull at the cinema. Audiences had grown tired of the Hammer films of the 60s and 70s, and while Tony Scott tried to breathe new life into them with The Hunger in 1983, it wasn't until a couple of years later that vampires became hip again thanks to writer/director Tom Holland.

If there is a movie that perfectly fits the term “beloved,” then The Princess Bride is pretty much it. The 1987 comical fantasy adventure by Rob Reiner has been a favorite movie of multiple generations and also has the honor of being a movie that both audiences and critics completely agreed is one of the best movies of all time. However, attempts to expand the franchise to the stage have been in theatrical development hell for almost 20 years, but have taken their first big step forward with the appointment of two very familiar and successful songwriters.
The Princess Bride stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, and an array of comical talent in minor roles, and, of course, Peter Falk and Fred Savage in the wraparound story. For anyone who does not know what The Princess Bride is about, the synopsis (which does not do it justice) reads:

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the classic vampire movie Fright Night, and to celebrate, the film’s writer/director Tom Holland is teaming up with bestselling author Michael Harbron to send an official prequel novel out into the world! Also simply titled Fright Night, the novel is set to be released in October.
While Fright Night received a novelization that was written by John Skipp and Craig Spector at the time of the film’s release, Holland and A. Jack Ulrich wrote a different novelization, an “expanded version,” called Fright Night: Origins a few years ago. Harbron’s Fright Night prequel novel is set before the Fright Night: Origins story, exploring events that unfolded during a gritty and culturally explosive Manhattan in the 1970s. It takes a bold, atmospheric approach – fusing the pulpy charm of the original with immersive world-building and classic Americana horror.

All You Need To Know About Michael Winner’s Chilling Horror Movie! (Photo Credit –Prime Video)
The era of the 1970s simmered with an unshakable dread when it felt that hell wasn’t just a distant, abstract threat but more of a looming inevitability. With Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen, the cultural climate didn’t just breed fear. It inspired it, setting the stage for a relentless wave of films, books, and TV specials obsessed with the eternal clash between divine forces and infernal ones.
The Sentinel: A Different Kind Of Religious Horror
Amidst this wave of hellish storytelling, Michael Winner’s The Sentinel carved out its own uniquely disturbing place. The movie wasn’t a simple battle of light triumphing over darkness, nor a comforting tale of faith overcoming evil. Instead, it plunged into the murky waters of corruption and sinister forces lurking in holy places.

Fan posters for movies are not a new thing, but with the increased availability of AI tools, it has become much easier for anyone to create some very elaborate and believable creations that fool some people into thinking that new movies in popular franchises are being made. A new poster that has unsettled many on social media is for Princess Bride 2, which comes with images of original stars Cary Elwes and Robin Wright reprising their roles from the classic 1987 fantasy.
Obviously, the poster is a fake, and there is currently no sequel to The Princess Bride in development, but the very idea of it happening has been enough to see fans demanding this non-existent movie be canceled before it ruins the much-loved classic. There are many reasons why some would be tricked into thinking the poster is for a genuine sequel – regardless of how basic it is – as talks of...

2009's stop-motion animated classic "Coraline," adapting Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella of the same name, remains widely beloved years after its debut. A dark fantasy story that has its eponymous protagonist escape her reality to a strange otherworldly realm, "Coraline" masterfully toes the line between childhood wonder and more sinister elements. Though wonderfully singular in its own way, there are a number of movies similar to "Coraline," some also stop-motion animated and some not. There is an honest adolescent vulnerability to the 2009 movie that has been touched on in different but recognizable ways by quite a few movies both before and since.
What so many of these movies like "Coraline" share is a sense of discovery into the fantastic, often in the face of the mundane back in conventional reality. Despite being ostensibly oriented for children, these movies aren't afraid to lean into more mature and melancholic themes. A good children's...

The Oscar-winning Al Pacino classic Dog Day Afternoon is not only one of the actor's best films in his legendary filmography, but among his most important. In fact, the Library of Congress stated the film was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2009, leading it to being reserved in the National Film Registry. The acclaimed film is available to rent or purchase digitally on Prime Video, but it seems the streamer takes preserving media a lot less seriously. A major snafu by the platform has been noticed by eagle-eyed subscribers, and Prime Video has been promptly hit with backlash.

It is several months since one of Jason Statham's most underrated action movies landed on free streaming, and now it is heading back up the Tubi chart yet again. Throughout the twenty-first century, romantic comedies have experienced a slow death. During this period, major Hollywood studios have focused primarily on action-based blockbusters, leaving little room for high-profile romantic comedies. Recently, when studios do decide to produce romantic comedies, they receive streaming-only releases. These films tend to feature poor acting, subpar screenplays, and corny, cliché-ridden narratives. Major publications such as The Washington Post, Variety, and Parade have all written articles declaring the romantic comedy as a dead genre.
While the current state of romantic comedies seems to be in limbo, the complete opposite was the case in the 1980s. During the 1980s, romantic comedies thrived both critically and commercially. In Hollywood, romantic comedies such as When Harry Met Sally..., Tootsie, and Moonstruck ranked among the most iconic films of the decade. Overseas, romantic comedies like Pauline at the Beach and My American Uncle earned numerous accolades at international film festivals.

Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has made Oscar history. The titular Emilia Pérez star was just nominated for Best Actress, making her the first openly transgender performer ever nominated in the category. She stars in the musical as a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transition but can’t fully escape her past.
This nomination is historic, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Beginning at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Gascón and costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were jointly named Best Actress. Emilia Pérez was then acquired by Netflix, which released it in theaters on Nov. 1 and on its streaming platform on Nov. 13.
Since then, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by awards groups. It received 10 Golden Globe nominations, the most ever for a comedy or musical, including one for Gascón. It went on to win four of those awards, including the top prize for best film.

What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

So many of our most enduring legends have their start in the Middle Ages, from King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table to Robin Hood, and for good reason -- their classic tales of adventure and noble battles for justice have won over audiences for hundreds of years.
Although adventures are never in short supply, whether our heroes are off fighting in the Crusades, waging a seemingly endless war in France over the right to rule France, or battling smaller tyrannies on the home front, films set in medieval times aren't just limited to the action genre. We've put together a comprehensive list of some of the best medieval films of all time, running the gamut from dramas and tales of adventures to horror,...

2006 was a good year for Denzel Washington on the big screen, because he starred in two high-grossing, high-quality thrillers: "Deja Vu" and "Inside Man." Just as "Deja Vu" was "Vertigo" as a time-traveling action movie, "Inside Man" was director Spike Lee's 21st century update on Sidney Lumet's "Dog Day Afternoon."
Written by Richard Gerwitz, "Inside Man" follows a hostage situation during a robbery at a Manhattan bank. Washington plays NYPD hostage negotiator Detective Keith Frazier, squaring off against the robbers' leader, Dalton Russell (Clive Owen). The story didn't begin with Lee (Ron Howard was in talks to direct "Inside Man" first), but he made it his own. "Inside Man" is definitely more of a crowd pleaser than something like "Do The Right Thing," as seen by it also being Lee's highest-grossing film to date, but it's absolutely a Spike Lee joint.

Few filmmakers had a better 1970s than Sidney Lumet. While he was more prolific than most of the decade's top directors, knocking out 11 movies over a 10-year span, and did find time to helm one of the worst musicals in motion picture history (a badly bungled adaptation of "The Wiz"), when Lumet got ahold of the right material, he made classics like "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Network."
There isn't a more electric movie in Lumet's oeuvre than "Dog Day Afternoon." Based on a true story, the 1975 critical and commercial hit centers on a bank robbery in Brooklyn carried out by Sonny Wortzik, an amateur crook desperate to pay for his lover's gender-affirming surgery. When the heist quickly goes south, Sonny and his associates find themselves stuck holding hostages while cops swarm the building. The defiant Sonny scrambles to negotiate...

The recent release of the first trailer and poster for A Working Man, the next movie from Jason Statham, already has everyone talking. 13 years ago, he starred in a classic action thriller that has made a triumphant return to streaming charts. Statham stars alongside Robert John Burke and Chris Sarandon in Safe, the one-person-army crime thriller that follows an ex-cage fighter (Statham) who looks out for a young girl being hunted by the same gang who destroyed his life. Safe recently began streaming for free on Plex TV and the film has climbed to the #4 spot on the platform at the time of writing, despite rough scores of 59% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned $41 million at the box office on a $30 million budget.

More often than not, fantasy movies include an element of romance in their stories, as these two genres easily go hand in hand. Since the aspects of fantasy that make it otherworldly, like magic and mystery, are used to reflect real-life struggles and topics, it's natural that love and relationships are touched upon as well. However, this doesn't mean that every movie ends happily for its central couple, as fantasy is just as filled with violence and tragedy as it is magic and goodness. This makes it even more exciting when the lovers do get a happily-ever-after.
The best fantasy romance movies ever made are notable for their stories and visuals but are often elevated to classic status thanks to the performances. Disney is known for making dreams come true across many mediums and genres. Through its incredible library of media, the stories Disney has been able to tell have been amazing. However, the House of Mouse is also known for creating some of the darkest moments in kids' films.
Whether villain, hero, loved one, or simply a random character, some of Disney's darkest moments onscreen are brutal deaths. These, and the masterfully crafted dramatic stories, keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon) and his plan to “improve” Halloween in his own way, and thanks to this, he achieved what a classic 67-year-old character couldn’t. In 1993, Tim Burton brought the perfect story for Halloween and Christmas in the stop-motion animation movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Directed by Henry Selick with a story by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas takes the audience into a fantasy world where each major holiday has its own world. In Halloween Town, Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King, but he’s getting tired of this.
One day, while wandering, Jack comes across the doors to the other holidays and is fascinated by Christmas Town. Jack becomes determined to improve Christmas in a Halloween-like way, but his plan gets out of control when the boogeyman himself, Oogie Boogie (Ken Page), takes Santa Claus with him.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.
Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

It took thirty-six years, but director Tim Burton finally got around to making a sequel to his 1988 hit Beetlejuice – and with that sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, having made over $450 million at the global box office, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that Warner Bros. wants another sequel. Burton has said not to expect Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice from him… but perhaps he could be persuaded. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, Burton has completely ruled out the idea of making sequels to two other films on his résumé, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Speaking with IndieWire, Burton said, “There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to (Edward Scissorhands) because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is better off without a sequel, but thanks to one often-forgotten detail, it can still have a future. Every single movie under the sun might be getting a sequel/prequel/reboot, but Tim Burton says he's never returning to his most beloved Christmas movie. Burton was back in theaters earlier this year with the long-awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which saw Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara return, along with newcomer Jenna Ortega. The film was a box office hit, but divided fans and critics. But the Tim Burton fandom is still strong, and audiences have been desperate for more Jack Skellington and Sally since A Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993.
Appearing at the Marrakech International Film Festival (via IndieWire), Tim Burton definitively ruled out any chances of A Nightmare Before Christmas getting a sequel in the future. "There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to," the director said. The topic of sequels was undoubtedly on everyone's minds following Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's success.

The Nightmare Before Christmas features incredible stop-motion animation, with a deliciously dark story for the whole family. Unlike many of Disney's best-known animated films, The Nightmare Before Christmas has a markedly darker and more twisted approach to storytelling. Everything from the stop-motion animation to the gruesome characters and the narrative, which is designed to be off-beat and unique, come together beautifully.

Movies are empathy machines, as Roger Ebert once wrote. The best films allow us to experience emotions we may not have felt otherwise through a particular character’s story. But some movies conjure emotions that we’re actively seeking out. Happiness. Joy. Love. We call these “feel-good movies.” Everybody has their go-to stable of films they return to over and over again when they need a boost — or maybe just an escape.

Animation is an incredibly diverse medium for storytelling, and the best animated movies of all time come in a variety of styles. Feature-length animation has continued to evolve since its beginnings in the 1930s. Hand-drawn 2D animation used to be the norm, but new technologies have set the stage for computer-generated animation, stop-motion, and many more techniques. This means that filmmakers have more freedom than ever, and they are only limited by their imaginations.
Choosing the best animated movies will always spark debate among fans, since animation is so diverse. Animation shouldn't be seen as a genre. Instead, it's best understood as an art form which can facilitate many genres. This means that the best animated movies of all time encompass comedies, sci-fi, fantasy, action and more. It's impossible to reach a consensus on the best animated movies, but there are some classics which everyone can agree on.

Tim Burton did not direct The Nightmare Before Christmas although many people would argue otherwise thanks to the deep vein of Burtons style running through it. When you think of The Nightmare Before Christmas, which holiday comes to mind? Whether the animated classic should be watched during the Halloween or Christmas season remains one of cinema's most contested questions. Released on October 29, 1993 (which is perhaps a rather compelling argument for the Halloween side of the debate), The Nightmare Before Christmas was a commercial and critical success. It gained an Oscar nomination and eventually inspired one of the most pronounced cult followings of all time. Considered a marvel of animation and stop-motion technology, it will go down in history as one of Tim Burton's greatest creative achievements. Yet, it seems to break a convention of holiday cinema in that it cannot be defined by any one holiday.
Thus, with the popularity of the film and its nebulous status as simultaneously a Halloween and Christmas movie, it remains a hot topic (see what I did there?) of discussion.

Despite his popularity and success with critics and general audiences, not all of Tim Burtons movies have been a hit with critics, and, surprisingly, his best and worst-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes werent directed by him. Tim Burtons filmmaking career began in the 1970s with various short films, and he made his feature-film directorial debut in 1985 with Pee-wees Big Adventure. However, it was with Beetlejuice in 1988 that Burton could fully show his unique narrative and visual style that mixes horror, fantasy, comedy, and gothic elements.
Since then, Burton has brought his signature style to the superhero genre with Batman and Batman Returns, to stop-motion animation with Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, to classics of childrens literature like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, sci-fi with Mars Attacks!, and a lot more. Pulling off a great comedy movie can sometimes be a miracle. Many elements come together to ensure the top-tier quality of a comedy classic, like its actors, writing, directing and subject matter. Something that is important but often unappreciated is the movie's villain.
Every great story has a villain. Its an impressive feat when a comedy is able to deliver a memorably fun bad guy who everyone can root against. And over the last few decades, audiences have been graced with some of the most hilarious baddies in cinematic history. Whether the straight man to bounce jokes off of or the zaniest character in the whole story, comedy villains are a fun addition to the genre.

A Return to the Living Dead and its shorter companion pieces They Won’t Stay Dead: A Look at the Return of the Living Dead Part II and Love Beyond the Grave: A Look at the Return of the Living Dead III. He was a producer on the 4 hour documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and the 6 and a half+ hour documentary Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th. Now he has turned his attention to the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise, resulting in the 295 minute (that’s 4 hours and 55 minutes) documentary Doc of Chucky! Doc of Chucky will be released through the Shudder streaming service on November 1st,...

Fantasy connotes big world-building which could serve sequels well, but some amazing fantasy movies that deserved sequels never got them. It seems like sequels people wish for are scrapped, while too many unwanted movie remakes and sequels are coming sooner rather than later. Famed fantasy movies in a variety of mediums work as excellent standalones but leave open the potential for an equally great sequel.
Complicating matters is that some of the best standalone fantasy movies might deserve a sequel, but they don't necessarily need one. If the story has come to a natural conclusion and forcing it to carry on would malign it, it is best that the movie is left alone. However, several fantasy movies that are effectively standalones imply some interesting possibilities for sequels, which would cleverly segue into an organic new story.
