She also worked repeatedly with director Mike Nichols, both onscreen and onstage, and was Oscar-nominated for her costuming on period films “Chinatown” (1974) and “Julia” (1977).

Assessing Sylbert’s work on “Chinatown,” GlamAmor, a website dedicated to the history of fashion in film, said in 2012: “Sylbert crafted clothes for Faye Dunaway that...

‘The Sopranos’ actor Richard Romanus passes away in Greece

Actor Richard Romanus, who is known for his roles in ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Mean Streets’, no more. He was 80. He died on December 23 in a hospital in Volos, Greece, his son, Robert Romanus, reports People magazine.

No cause of death was given. Romanus was known for his tough-guy roles including Michael Longo in 1973’s ‘Mean Streets’. In the Martin Scorsese-directed crime drama, Romanus played a loan shark who gets into a memorable confrontation with Johnny Civello (Robert De Niro).

Scorsese, 81, recalled the iconic bar scene in Andy Dougan’s Untouchable: Robert De Niro, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Something had happened between Bobby and Richard because the animosity between them in that scene is real, and I played on it. They had gotten on each other’s nerves to the point where I think they really wanted to kill each other,” the writer-director recalled in the 2011 biography.

Richard Romanus, Mean Streets loan shark & Maurice Hines, star of The Cotton Club, dead
Image
It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.

Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

Jennifer Jason Leigh Is The Best Actor Ever
Image
(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)

There is not an actor in the history of moving pictures who has been more egregiously taken for granted by her industry than Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Critics have always had her back. The New York Times' Janet Maslin got it from the jump when she singled Leigh out as "the only thing worth seeing" in her film debut "Eyes of a Stranger." The better-than-average 1981 slasher film set the tone for Leigh's career in that she plays a victim. Her character is a blind-deaf mute whose condition was brought on by being kidnapped and raped at an early age. The 19-year-old Leigh projects sweetness and innocence, but this young woman is all serrated edges. Because she isn't just a victim. She's a survivor.

Roger Ebert was also an early admirer of Leigh,...

“Learn it. Know it. Live it!” The best-remembered teen comedy of the ’80s is also an insightful and unabashed look at real attitudes, behaviors and motivations of young people learning to deal with adult issues. Beyond the hilarious Sean Penn and the luscious Phoebe Cates lies a talent squad of notables and stars-to-be like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Robert Romanus, with appearances by Amanda Wyss, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Coppola and Anthony Edwards. The stunning feature directing debut of Amy Heckerling, from Cameron Crowe’s undercover high school exposé, should be acknowledged as a modern classic.

Cameron Crowe Reflects on Abortion Storyline in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’
Sean Penn in Ça chauffe au lycée Ridgemont (1982)
Fans remember”Fast Times at Ridgemont High” for its raunchy humor, loaded soundtrack and clever storyline, but an underlying subplot involving underage sex and abortion often flies under the radar — and that might be a good thing.

According to screenwriter Cameron Crowe, the film’s abortion side-story wouldn’t hold up with a modern audience.

“It would be outrageously controversial, and it would be protested, and there would be a mess over it,” Crowe said during an interview with Yahoo.

The storyline in question follows 15-year-old sophomore Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who starts off the school year as a virgin, only to become impregnated by fellow classmate Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). Following the pregnancy news, Stacy undergoes an abortion, which the film treats with a surprising lack of fanfare — a detail that Crowe attributes to director Amy Heckerling.

“We asked her about the abortion scene, and she said ‘you know what,...

From ‘Sixteen Candles’ to ‘Eighth Grade': 17 Cringeworthy Moments From Coming of Age Movies (Photos)
Bo Burnham
Bo Burnham’s debut feature film “Eighth Grade” is earning acclaim for its realistic and touching portrayal of growing up today. Of course, Burnham’s movie builds on a long legacy of movies that deal with the awkwardness of coming of age, from John Hughes classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles” to more recent successes like “Lady Bird” and “Call Me By Your Name.” Take a look at some of the most cringeworthy moments from these movies below.

The Graduate (1967)

In this classic coming-of-age story from Mike Nichols, Benjamin Braddock (breakout star Dustin Huffman) has a lot of cringeworthy moments with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). In one scene, he confronts his soon-to-be lover about her strange behavior and then delivers the famous line: “Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me… aren’t you?”

Canon Of Film: ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’
In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look back at Amy Heckerling‘s high school coming-of-age-classic, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)

Director: Amy Heckerling

Screenplay: Cameron Crowe based on his book

I think the best high school movies are not the ones that show the over-the-top journeys of a few drunk, stoned, and/or sex-crazed low-life students going to have the defining life-changing moments with their best friend’s slutty mom or whatever, insignifcant pitiful high school goal they aim for.… but instead the better films are the ones that are more slice of life films, the ones that show just how nieve and stupid we were when we younger and how that influenced but didn’t necessarily defined our life. If you ask Freud, we have already had...

Review: "Foxes" (1980) Starring Jodie Foster And Scott Baio; Blu-ray Special Edition From Kino Lorber Studio Classics
By David Savage

Kino Lorber was right to bring out Foxes (1980) in Blu-ray under their Kl Studio Classics series. The elegant re-issue seems aimed at convincing film snobs that this little gem from the last days of disco finally deserves their attention after a distance of 35 years, during which time it was either dismissed as another insignificant teen comedy of the ‘80s, or as a guilty pleasure. But longtime champions of the film, myself included, need no convincing. We owned the clamshell VHS, we owned the first-generation DVD, and now, if anything, I’d venture to say we feel vindicated that it now carries the stamp as a bonafide classic by a home video label as respected as Kino Lorber. Indeed, a major fist-pump moment comes during director Adrian Lyne’s remark in the audio commentary that Roger Ebert selected it as his favorite film of 1980 and took it with...

5 Things You Might Not Know About Amy Heckerling & Cameron Crowe's 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High'
One of the trickier genres to get right is the teen comedy. Walking the line between not condescending to a high-school-age audience and yet also not alienating them is a difficult balance, let alone making a film that doesn't age, feels truthful, and can be smart and funny as well. And one of the finest examples of the genre remains to this day, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Released thirty years ago today on August 13th, the 1982 film, directed by first-timer Amy Heckerling and written by future filmmaker Cameron Crowe, follows a diverse range of characters, including hot-headed Brad (Judge Reinhold), his virginal sister Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh), her older friend Linda (Phoebe Cates), shy Rat (Brian Backer), ticket scalper Mike (Robert Romanus) and stoner/surfer Spicoli (Sean Penn). And of course, it's responsible for some indelible moments both for those who were of the right age when the film released,...

‘Secret Life’ Star Renee Olstead To Play ‘The Midnight Game’
Renee Olstead is best known for playing nice Catholic girl Madison Cooperstein on the ABC Family drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but she’ll soon be taking on a very different kind of role for a new indie horror project. Olstead recently signed on to play Kaitlin in The Midnight Game, a movie about the dangers of mixing teenagers and witchcraft. Anyone who watched The Craft half as much as I did in high school knows what I’m talking about. [Variety]

Directed by A.D. Calvo and written by Rick Dahl, the film also stars Deborah Twiss (Kick-Ass), Shelby Young (The Social Network), Valentina de Angelis (It’s Kind Of A Funny Story), Spencer Daniels (Start Trek), Guy Wilson (Little Black Book), Nedra McClyde and Robert Romanus, who you may remember as the ticket scalper Mike Damone in Fast Times At Ridgement High.

The Midnight Game is currently shooting in Connecticut.

Sean Penn in Ça chauffe au lycée Ridgemont (1982)
Sean Penn Channels Jeff Spicoli at Guys Choice 'Fast Times' Reunion (Video)
Sean Penn in Ça chauffe au lycée Ridgemont (1982)
Sean Penn might have a couple of Oscars under his belt, but he's still Spicoli after all these years. The "Milk" actor was on hand for Spike TV's "Guys Choice" awards on Saturday with several of his castmates from the 1982 classic "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," which was inducted into the Guy Movie Hall of Fame. Surrounded by Forest Whitaker, Judge Reinhold, Robert Romanus and "Fast Times" director Amy Heckerling (as well as Robert De Niro, who bestowed the antlered trophy), Penn revisited his surfer/stoner character Jeff Spicoli, delivering the...

Image/Video of the Day: Fast Times at Ridgemont High Cast Reunite
In honor of the film's 30th anniversary this year, the cast of Fast Times at Ridgemont High reunited at Spike TV's Guy Choice Awards back on June 4th. The actual awards ceremony airs on TV tomorrow night, but Spike was cool enough to put most of the highlights on their website, including this one. Unfortunately none of the main actresses were available, but it's still cool to see some of the main players back together again, as well as Sean Penn try on the voice of Spicoli one last time. Featured in this image, we have: From left: Taylor Negron (the pizza delivery guy); Forest Whitaker (Charles Jefferson); Amy Heckerling (director); Brian Backer (Mark "Rat" Ratner); Judge Reinhold (Brad Hamilton); Robert Romanus (Mike Damone); and Sean Penn (Jeff...

Hey Bud! Guys Choice Awards to Reunite 'Fast Times' Gang
The cast of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" will reunite to party at the Guys Choice Awards. Jeff Spicoli would most definitely approve.

Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold, Robert Romanus, Brian Backer, Forest Whitaker and director Amy Heckerling will be present at Spike TV's Guy Choice Awards to witness "Fast Times" being inducted into the Guy Movie Hall of Fame, according to Inside TV.

Hopefully, they'll play Sammy Hagar's title song as they approach the stage. Or at least Billy Squier's "Fast Times (The Best Years of Our Lives)."

Bummer, though, that Stacy and Linda won't be able to make it, as Jennifer Jason Leigh is in New York starring in a Broadway production of "The House of Blue Leaves" and Phoebe Cates is unavailable.

We wonder if Phoebe still has that red bathing suit? We wonder that quite often, actually...

The Guys Choice Awards will air on Spike TV on Friday,...

Patrick Dempsey
Wait ... When Did Patrick Dempsey Become a Sex Symbol?!?
Patrick Dempsey
I know he's a good-looking guy Now, but man this makes me chuckle. Only people who grew up in the '80s as ravenous movie freaks will see where I'm going with this, but ... Patrick Dempsey is now a sex symbol, thanks entirely to his work (and his look) on a very popular medical series that I've never seen. (I think it's called Boston Elsewhere E/R Mercy Anatomy Clinic.)

Before we continue, please know that this is not any sort of attack on Mr. Dempsey. Matter of fact, he's one of those actors I feel I kinda "grew up with," not unlike John Cusack, Robert Downey Jr., and Johnny Depp. (Yes, my generation produced talented actors. Deal with it.) On top of the fact that I enjoy Dempsey's on-screen antics, the guy now represents the ultimate geeky guy dream: to struggle and suffer through our awkward teen years, completely awash in nerdliness,...

American Pie Presents: The Book of Love Review
Baked goods have a shelf life for good reason. I don't care how good the original pie was, after ten fucking years, it's going to be shitty and nauseating. Now on its Seventh incarnation, I'm praying to the god Flickus, god of direct-to-dvd, and Frattus, god of collegiate antics, that the lame American Pie series be taken out back and given the ol' double-barrel buh-bye. Bury the remains in hallowed earth, and then salt it so nothing may grow from it again. American Pie is now prepackaged like dollar store cake-mix boxes molded from a warehouse flood. The jokes stopped being funny four movies ago, they've run out of things to stick it in or have stuck in themselves, and they're recycling hit-on/burn lines that were old when the Pie was still fresh. The first film might have been my generation's Breakfast Club, igniting a few careers with a...

David Savage Remembers The Under-rated "Foxes" (1980)
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Unlike the high school hellcats twenty years before them, tossing globes out of classroom windows and firing on police officers (see High School Confidential), Foxes (1980), is a portrait of teenage torpor at the dawn of the Eighties. These jaded teens, led by Jodie Foster, would rather pop a ‘lude and put on a Boston LP.

Examining the loosely woven friendship between four high school girls in the San Fernando Valley, each with typical problems of her age – and therefore seemingly insurmountable – Foxes looks at how each personality type copes with life, sex and parents, all of whom are divorced and too busy trying to find themselves rather than guide their children through the rockiest period of their lives.

Released between two movies that became classics of the L.A. High School genre, Rock ‘n Roll High School (1979) and Fast Times at Ridgemont...
