Ever since he played the sweet-faced teenage boy who stands up for Kevin Kline’s outed gay teacher at the end of 1997’s “In & Out,” Shawn Hatosy has endeared himself to a wide audience.
In the intervening years, he has worked nonstop, popping up in films directed by Robert Rodriguez (“The Faculty)”, Werner Herzog (“Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”) and Michael Mann (“Public Enemies”) and on TV in acclaimed series like NBC/TNT’s cop drama “Southland” and TNT’s crime saga “Animal Kingdom.” Now his supporting turn as Dr. Jack Abbot, an ER doctor in Max’s “The Pitt,” is earning him a new kind of acclaim. Never mind that the character appears in less than a third of the series’ first 15 episodes.
“I’ve never experienced anything like it,” Hatosy said. Dr. Abbot works the night shift, initially only crossing paths with Noah Wyle’s Dr.

Although Scream 2 was directed by the original movie’s legendary director, Wes Craven, screenwriter Kevin Williamson confirmed that Robert Rodriguez almost made the first Scream sequel instead. The Scream franchise’s movies and TV shows have been directed and written by a diverse array of creators, with X director Ti West directing an episode of the Scream TV series while future Top Gun: Maverick scribe Ehren Kruger penned Scream 3’s screenplay.
However, no name is as closely associated with the Scream franchise as Wes Craven. Despite this, when ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan asked whether Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson almost directed 1998’s The Faculty, Williamson revealed that, in reality, it was The Faculty’s director Robert Rodriguez who almost directed Scream’s first sequel. Per Williamson:
“No, no. That was Robert Rodriguez. Robert Rodriguez almost directed Scream 2. I don’t know if anyone knows that. I think Wes...

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the bona fide action star of the ‘80s and ‘90s with hits like The Terminator, Commando, Last Action Hero, Conan the Barbarian, and more. He was also the bulky lead of the ‘80s classic sci-fi action film Predator, which spawned the eponymous franchise and is currently seeing a revival with Predator: Killer of Killers.
While the franchise went into B-movie territory with the Alien crossover, it had a return to form with the 2010 threequel, Predators. Starring Adrien Brody, the film saw humans being put into the extraterrestrial monsters’ planet as part of a survival game. Brody was reportedly approached for a different part, but he convinced the makers to cast him as the lead.

This article contains spoilers for "Predator: Killer of Killers."
Ever since 1987, when Arnold Schwarzenegger (playing the paramilitary soldier Dutch) became the first man to defeat the strong, cunning, and superior firepower-wielding Yautja in "Predator," fans and filmmakers alike have been clamoring for a rematch. While it's true that Schwarzenegger has only made a relative handful of sequels — "Conan," "The Terminator," and "The Expendables" are the only franchises where he's appeared in multiple entries — that hasn't stopped the various people behind the "Predator" films to try and bring Dutch back.
When 1990's "Predator 2" was being developed, writers Jim and John Thomas had a fairly novel idea of having Dutch return as a Special Agent leading a clandestine task force to track and capture (or kill) any new Yautja found on Earth. After Arnold passed, the role was rewritten as a shadier government agent, and was played by Gary Busey. The...

I helped write, pass, and protect the nation’s first law to regulate artificial intelligence. As part of Donald Trump’s tax bill, Republicans in Washington are now trying to overturn our law in Colorado and preempt any other similar efforts around the country — as the need to regulate AI only grows.
The Biden administration formed the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (Aisi) in 2023 to identify potential major risks AI could cause. These federal guidelines ushered tech companies to move toward embracing regulation. Understanding the pattern of inaction by Congress,...

If there's one lesson we've learned over the course of the last 40-odd years of cinema, it's to never bet against James Cameron. There were bets against him when the maverick filmmaker took on the "Titanic," and again when he insisted on building the imaginative and lush alien world of "Avatar" a decade later. In both instances, Cameron's ventures not only succeeded, but made him a king of Hollywood cinema.
"Avatar" is currently two movies deep into a planned five-movie saga, but now it looks like Cameron will be taking a detour after "Avatar: Fire and Ash." As the filmmaker himself announced in a press release via his Facebook page today, Cameron's company, Lightstorm Entertainment, has acquired the rights to author Joe Abercrombie's latest novel, "The Devils." That novel was literally just published on May 13, but it's already built up quite a bit of buzz, even leaving Cameron's interest aside.

When Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies and videotape took the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, it signaled that the gates had officially been kicked in. Here was a movie made for just over $1 million that seemed more fitting for Sundance (where it also won). But it was just the sort of reckoning that other indie minds needed. Enter Richard Linklater and Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez and on and on, who helped change the face of cinema with independent film – for a little while, anyway.
Richard Linklater – whose debut, Slacker, was made for just $23,000 – is currently at the Cannes Film Festival himself. And it’s there that he wondered just where the independent film has gone and what it means for another moment for the scene. “It still happens, but the mainstream doesn’t fully embrace or acknowledge it, and I think that’s why it’s gone now.

What Did Eva Mendes Say About Her Onscreen Kiss With Johnny Depp? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Ryan Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, had her answer locked and loaded when it came to kissing Johnny Depp. During an old interview, the Hitch actress couldn’t stop gushing about their steamy onscreen moment in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Apparently, it was so good, she still wishes she’d kissed him longer.
Eva Mendes Recalled The One On-Screen Kiss She Wished Lasted Longer
Eva Mendes had smooched several prominent celebrities on-screen, including Nicolas Cage, Gabriel Macht, and her Hitch castmate Will Smith. Still, no one succeeded in charming her completely like the Pirates of the Caribbean actor did.
In 2003, Eva shared the screen with Johnny Depp in Robert Rodriguez’s action-packed cowboy flick Once Upon a Time in Mexico. She played opposite the Golden Globe-winning actor in the action-packed film. But the...

While actor Pedro Pascal gained wide recognition from his memorable performance in "Game of Thrones," he's been working steadily in film and television since the '90s, first auditioning for what would become of Edward Norton's best movies. Even after catapulting into the spotlight, Pascal continues to take on everything from scene-stealing supporting roles to lead parts. Able to alternate from easygoing charm to unshakeable intensity at a moment's notice, Pascal has steadily become a true fan-favorite screen presence in the past decade. This is evidenced by the impressive body of work Pascal has built up over the years, including a hilarious hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live."
Given the breadth of his career, Pascal has done everything from high-octane action projects to family-friendly fare in movies and television. Whether playing a suave and charismatic hero or gruff and grizzled survivor, Pascal's characters tend to carry a grounded weight to them.

Before he became the brooding heartthrob of the late ’90s, Josh Hartnett wasn’t even trying to be famous. Seriously, he didn’t dream of red carpets or blockbuster premieres—instead Hartnett just wanted to direct artsy films and geek out over Federico Fellini. But life had other plans, and in poetic irony, the actor accidentally fell into acting—and totally stole the show in a 1998 cult classic.
In a wild twist of fate, as recalled by Josh Hartnett during his Vanity Fair interview, the actor mentioned how director Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty was the first film he was cast in, although Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, became his first feature film. During the interview, Hartnett then reflected on how he landed the role of Zeke, even though he didn’t care enough to read the script.

Rob Zombie was nearly one of the sordid characters running amok in Robert Rodriguez‘s Sin City.
The filmmaker/musician shared the anecdote on Instagram with photos from Spike TV’s 2006 Scream Awards, where The Devil’s Rejects took home the award for Best Horror Movie.
“Robert asked me to play a role in Sin City but I was shooting The Devil’s Rejects at the time and had to decline,” he writes.
It’s unknown what part Zombie would have played — perhaps a Swat team member alongside (or in place of) Rodriguez himself — but it likely would have been a cameo given his busy schedule and inexperience in front of the camera.
Zombie made his big screen debut in Airheads, although he merely played himself as the frontman of White Zombie. He later took on the uncredited role of Dr. Wolfenstein’s assistant in his directorial debut, House of 1000 Corpses.

Released in September 2005, Total Overdose: A Gunslinger’s Tale in Mexico is one of the most iconic open world games ever made. The game itself isn’t something noteworthy in terms of ratings and critic scores, but the fun we had playing it is undeniable.
Critics at the time gave it middling reviews, calling out its low-budget visuals, janky open world, and sometimes incoherent narrative. But for a generation of players (including us), Total Overdose left a lasting impression. Not because it was polished, but because it was pure, chaotic fun. Join us in celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Based strictly on box office, it would not be accurate to call Antonio Banderas one of the biggest movie stars of the 1990s, but once I laid eyes on the striking Spaniard in Pedro Almódovar's "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down," I wanted to him to be in everything. In terms of scintillating, dead sexy screen presence, only Denzel Washington could match him. He became a mainstream American sensation when Madonna failed to seduce him in her "Blonde Ambition" tour documentary "Madonna: Truth or Dare." Banderas was primed for superstardom. And Hollywood promptly fumbled the ball.
Banderas delivered the smoldering goods in Arne Glimcher's lively historical drama "The Mambo Kings," but Warner Bros. had no idea how to sell a movie about Cuban music to American moviegoers, so it stiffed commercially in 1992. Banderas subsequently got lost in the star-studded...

Josh Hartnett, the late '90s teenage heartthrob famous for films like Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, and The Black Dahlia, debuted in Hollywood with two major films released in 1998. One was Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, arguably the most underrated Halloween sequel, where he portrayed Laurie Strode's son and one of Michael Myers' targets. The other one was the teen sci-fi horror movie, The Faculty, in which he portrayed a mischievous teenager who deals drugs in a school that has been overtaken by aliens. As The Faculty's remake enters the development stage, Hartnett has commented on whether he'll reprise his role as Zeke Tyler. All we have to say is, don't get too excited.

Director Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City”) has plans for a three-film live-action movie trilogy, centered on author Robert E. Howard's ‘Cimmerian’ barbarian “Conan” and to make the films, “…look like the (Frazetta) paintings…”
“Three movies…almost built as a ‘James Bond’ series”, said Rodriguez.
“It starts with him as a thief, by the second movie he's a buccaneer/mercenary, and the third one is when he becomes king.
“So the actor could grow with the role…
“…like how Daniel Craig started with ‘Casino Royale’ and by the end, he's ‘No Time To Die’.
“You have to get an actor who does the whole journey…”
The ‘Conan” IP is controled by Conan Properties International (Cpi), a subsidiary of Heroic Signatures.
Cpi's primary role involves managing the rights associated with Robert E. Howard creations, including “Conan”, “Solomon Kane” and “Kull the Conqueror”.

A new remake of the 1968 sci-fi film Barbarella will be coming to screens soon courtesy of Sony Pictures with writer Jane Goldman attached to the project. The project will see A-list actress, Sydney Sweeney, attached to star in the upcoming remake. The project is based on the French comic book of the same name, but actual details surrounding the upcoming project remain largely vague and very thin. Sweeney was brought on as the project's leading star and an executive producer in 2022, and production has stalled somewhat in the three years since. Despite the slow pace and years of silence, Sweeney has revealed that Barbarella's development is still pressing on.
"I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script," Sweeney revealed in a recent conversation. "I can't say too much, but it's really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way.

Sydney Sweeney knows fans are waiting for her long-discussed remake of Barbarella, and the actress is hard at work on the film. In 2022, it was announced that Sweeney would star in and produce a remake of the 1968, Jane Fonda-led sci-fi cult classic. In 2024, director Edgar Wright signed on to direct and is expected to begin work on the film after his next film, the remake of The Running Man, which happens to star Sweeney's Anyone but You co-star Glen Powell.
Speaking to Empire Magazine (as reported by Screen Rant), Sweeney revealed that she was just in London for a meeting regarding the Barbarella remake. "I can't say too much, but it's really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It's a long process. I don't think people realize how long some things can take, but it's gonna be worth the wait..." Sweeney said.

Joel Potrykus doesn’t want to blow up Sean Baker’s phone.
“I asked him if he would moderate this Q&a. I made the mistake of putting a money incentive in there,” Potrykus confesses. “It immediately felt weird. I should have never mentioned money at all. He always replies… I’m just going to leave it.”
It’s not particularly surprising that Potrykus and the “Anora” director have been in communiqué over the years. Baker started making films a bit earlier, but both filmmakers grew in reputation as American indie favorites through the 2010’s, turning out breakouts like Baker’s fast-talking sex-work misadventure “Tangerine” and Potrykus’ couch potato slasher “Buzzard” — scrappy, funny features with bold characters, sidewinding storylines and a commitment to the grit of their street-level settings.

Josh Hartnett has banked nearly 30 years in Hollywood, beginning with roles in horror flicks “The Faculty” and “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later” and the TV show “Cracker.”
Sure, he landed big roles, like in Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor,” but the former teen idol never got much respect for his acting. Now, however, thanks to his roles in “Oppenheimer,” “Trap” and “Black Mirror,” we’re in the middle of a Hartnett-issance
He’s back in action mode in his new thriller “Fight or Flight,” which is, essentially, “Bullet Train,” but on a plane: His mercenary character has to fight off several assassins who want him and his client dead.

Sixteen years passed from the time Eli Roth made a slasher faux trailer called Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse to the day when a feature version of Thanksgiving (read our review Here) finally made its way into theatres – and soon after that movie was released in 2023, it was announced that a sequel would be coming along in 2025. Five months ago, we heard that Thanksgiving 2 would start filming in March… but that didn’t happen. To be ready for a Thanksgiving 2025 release, the slasher sequel would need to start filming any day now. But apparently we’re not getting Thanksgiving 2 this year, because it has just been announced that Roth will be making a different horror movie called Ice Cream Man in Canada this summer!

Wolfgang Van Halen has revealed that he used his late father Eddie Van Halen‘s iconic Frankenstein guitar, aka the Frankenstrat, to record parts on his new Mammoth song “The End.”
The intro to Wolfgang’s one-off single sounds eerily reminiscent to Eddie’s guitar tapping — one of his signature techniques — as heard on Van Halen hits like “Hot for Teacher.” Not only does Wolfgang emulate that tapping perfectly, but he even used Eddie’s legendary red-and-white striped axe to evoke his father’s tone and sound.

“Fun fact, I recorded the main tapping of the song, and the slap part with the Frankenstein!” shared Wolfgang on X/Twitter, along with a video of him performing the slap part. “Makes me feel closer to Pop that such an important part of his history can live with mine every time I record.”

There are many reasons why some movie projects never get made, and in a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Robert Rodriguez revealed his planned trilogy of Conan The Barbarian movies was scrapped for the most frustrating reasons. Rodriguez recalled pitching his epic remake of the classic comic book legend to Netflix only to have them allow their hold on the franchise rights to lapse and kill the project. To make it worse, Rodriguez had also convinced Hollywood heavyweight James Cameron to be part of the project.
According to Rodriguez, who worked with Cameron on Alita: Battle Angel, plans for the project originally started many years ago, before the filmmaker believed technology could match his vision. He told Rogan:
"I almost did a Conan movie. I even roped James Cameron into wanting to do it. We were going to do [something similar] to what we did with [Battle Angel] Alita.

Last year, Amazon MGM unveiled the mega-budget Christmas-themed film Red One in theaters, attracting negative press for the film’s perceived underperformance at the box office. It was argued, however, that the film’s theatrical run was essentially a publicity tool for its eventual release on Prime Video; similar arguments have been made in defense of the numerous box office misfires produced by Apple Studios. They can also be made in defense of Amazon MGM’s latest offering, The Accountant 2. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, the movie serves as a sequel to his 2016 hit The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck in the titular role.
The first film was distributed by Warner Bros.; it grossed over $150 million worldwide and found an even bigger audience on home video. This is perhaps what inspired them to put a sequel together. Anything that The Accountant 2 makes at the box office is a bonus; the...

A reunion of the 1996 vampire action film From Dusk Till Dawn has happened, but it isn't for a sequel or a reboot. Instead, director Robert Rodriguez decided to listen to a fan's request and revisit the horror universe that introduced us to Santánico Pandemonium. How exactly? Through a music video that'll leave you wanting more of Rodriguez's unique approach to the vampire genre.
The music video is "The End," by heavy metal band Mammoth. Band leader Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of guitar legend Eddie, stars in the video where the band arrives at a shady bar where their tunes aren't exactly welcome. We'll skip a few of the details that may give you an idea that the bar is just a branch of From Dusk Till Dawn's T*tty Twister.

Six years after Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters, a long-gestating sequel appears to still be in the works. Director Robert Rodriguez gave a hopeful update about the next installment in the franchise.
In an interview on the Joe Rogan Experience, Rodriguez opened up about wanting to make another Alita film. "Yeah, we want to do another one for sure," he said, going on to talk about how parts of the set are still at his studio. "That whole city is still in my parking lot. 20-foot ceilings, seven streets. It's like the largest standing set in the country, if not the world." Alita: Battle Angel was released back in 2019 with Rosa Salazar starring as Alita through performance-capture CGI animation.

During a revealing chat on the Joe Rogan Experience, Robert Rodriguez (director of Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel) shared some ambitous plans to resurrect Conan the Barbarian for a new generation.
The director revealed an intriguing vision of an epic three-part saga that sadly never materialized.
Rodriguez disclosed that he had mapped out a trilogy based on Robert E. Howard's legendary warrior and even successfully sparked the interest of cinematic titan James Cameron.
"I almost did a Conan movie. I even roped James Cameron into wanting to do it," Rodriguez stated, beginning the conversation around the 1:44:00 mark of the podcast (video below).
He elaborated on their vision, explaining, "We were going to do [something similar] to what we did with [Battle Angel] Alita. I said, 'Let's do a Conan movie and we'll make it look like the paintings.' Technology wasn't there yet and I ended up doing Sin City instead.

Can’t get enough of Ryan Coolger’s “Sinners?”
You aren’t alone. The visionary vampire movie, which made over $180 million at the box office, is a genuine cultural phenomenon. Quite frankly, it’s enough to make you want to repeat the experience of watching “Sinners” at home, without, you know, the 70mm print and IMAX-certified screen.
But fear not, there are plenty of “Sinners”-adjacent material to watch at home, along with some of the other movies that Coogler has cited in the run-up to the movie’s release.
“Sinners” is a singular work of staggering genius, but here are a bunch of movies that will at least partially scratch that itch – at least until you can get back to the theater to watch Michael B. Jordan raise some more hell.

While we're waiting for any updates on any new movies directed by Robert Rodriguez (aka "Rr"), in the meantime he's cooked up a brand new music video to enjoy. Rodriguez co-directed this gnarly horror music video with special FX legend Greg Nicotero - it's a werewolf and monster-filled hard rock music video for Mammoth Wvh's song "The End." The band features the lead singer & guitarist Wolfgang Van Halen, who also stars in this music video. There's more than just the song - the video has bookends which setup the story and wrap things up with a fun finale. When they finally start playing in this small venue, everything turns to mayhem when the crowd of concertgoers transforms into monsters. At first it's a big hairy werewolf, but then...

Wolfgang Van Halen‘s Mammoth have released a new song, “The End,” along with a star-studded Robert Rodriguez-directed video featuring Danny Trejo, Slash, and more.
“The End” marks the first new music from Wolfgang since he dropped his initials from the Mammoth Wvh moniker, and it’s a ripper, opening with a shreddy tapping solo that echoes the guitar theatrics of Wolfgang’s late father, the legendary Eddie Van Halen. Performed by Wolfgang and returning collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette, the track balances fast-paced verses sections with a hyper melodic chorus that showcases Wolfgang’s vocals.

It has now been six years since audiences were introduced to the cyberpunk world of director Robert Rodriguez’s action outing, Alita: Battle Angel. After waiting patiently, the filmmaker has now revealed the news that fans want to hear.

The cyberpunk world of ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ still has stories to tell. Director Robert Rodriguez recently shared his excitement about returning to Iron City for a sequel. He believes Alita’s journey is far from finished, and I can’t help but agree. The 2019 film left us with a cliffhanger, and the idea of diving back into that gritty, futuristic universe feels thrilling.
Rosa Salazar brought Alita to life as a cyborg with no memory, pieced together by Dr. Ido, played by Christoph Waltz. The story, based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga ‘Gunnm,’ follows Alita navigating the dangerous streets of Iron City. She discovers her past as a skilled warrior while battling foes and mastering Motorball, a brutal cyborg sport. The movie earned over $405 million worldwide, making it Rodriguez’s biggest box office hit, despite a mixed critical response.
Rodriguez has been vocal about wanting to continue Alita’s story.

It's been six years since Alita: Battle Angel was released in theaters, and it has been a few years since James Cameron announced that a sequel is in the works. While a release date has yet to be revealed, its director, Robert Rodriguez, shared his thoughts on the project's progress.
In an interview with Joe Rogan, Rodriguez emphasized that Alita's journey in the Iron City is far from over and said he wanted to make another movie based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series. The filmmaker has previously stated that he was doubtful that a sequel would come to light due to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. But his mindset changed when he saw more Fox films coming out. If a follow-up feature were to be made, he and Cameron would have enough material to make two more movies.
It's not just Rodriguez who wants an Alita: Battle Angel sequel.

Conan the Barbarian was created by author Robert E. Howard in the early 1930s – and around the time of the character’s 50th anniversary, he was brought to life on the screen in an incredibly popular movie (titled Conan the Barbarian) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger reprised the role in the less popular sequel, Conan the Destroyer, in 1984, and while there were plans for another sequel in the ’80s, but it never made it into production. And even though Schwarzenegger has been saying for years that he wants to play Conan again, somehow it has never happened. Instead, we got a Conan the Barbarian reboot in 2011 – a movie that star Jason Momoa has described as “a big pile of sh*t.” Five years ago, it was announced that the Netflix streaming service had secured a deal with Conan Properties International that gave them the right to dig through the entire catalog...

Having experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has had a small taste of navigating a widespread outbreak of disease, seclusion, and an alarming decrease in the availability of toilet paper. When compared to the conditions of a zombie apocalypse, similarities surface, exposing the disturbing flaws of human nature and, on a more positive note, our inclination to establish a found family and form connections in unlikely places. Our desire to survive while also maintaining what’s left of our humanity becomes paramount to salvaging our sanity while increasing the possibility of finding solace in a world gone to shit. Here’s the thing, though. To survive, you’ve got to follow the rules. Without order, chaos reigns. Without precaution, you’re likely to end up as a screaming pile of zombie chow instead of living in a fortified lap of luxury, sleeping atop a bed of Twinkies. The long-rumored Conan the Barbarian reboot series just got a definitively devastating update from its director. Most are familiar with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chiseled portrayal of the hero in the 1982 film, but Conan the Barbarian is actually based on a string of short stories from Robert E. Howard. The film was remade in 2011 with Jason Momoa taking on the lead role, and there was reported to even a TV series reboot in the works for years. Robert Rodriguez, best known for his work on the Spy Kids franchise, was even attached as a director, but the project has reportedly been scrapped for now. Rodriguez recently sat down with Joe Rogan for an episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, and he provided an update on the show, even going as far as to say what led to its demise:
"Netflix had it. I went and pitched it to them.

The action cinema of John Wick, Havoc and John Woo’s The Killer has constantly evolved as it’s travelled between filmmakers and eras.
Now on Netflix, writer-director Gareth Evans’ Havoc is an ultra-violent stew of influences. It’s set in a benighted US city, but was shot in Wales; its bullet-strewn action is directly inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.
Then again, action cinema has always been a particularly international genre, taking in disparate bits of American westerns, low-key French thrillers and more besides. When John Woo directed A Better Tomorrow, released in 1986, its contemporary gangland setting and ferocious shoot-outs changed the look and feel of action cinema forever. Widely credited with inventing what was later dubbed the ‘heroic bloodshed’ genre, it made a star out of its lead, Chow Yun-fat.

The “swashbuckling adventure” is a subgenre that became more and more antiquated as the spectacle of action movies evolved. It probably has less of an edge over westerns since the latter can still rely on gunplay, but sword-fighting films have roots in Hollywood since the golden era with movies like Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers and countless Pirate films. It was the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that brought swashbucklers into a whole new world with modern audiences.
However, 1998 would see the return of a legendary folk hero, both in the context of the story and in the world of cinema, when Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment produced the Martin Campbell film The Mask of Zorro.
The History
Zorro was created in 1919 by Johnston McCulley. And amazingly this property (that’s over a hundred years old) still has influence on a bevy of popular characters that still goes strong today.

Check out the box office results from 2024, and you'll have to scroll down a while to find a film that isn't part of the barrage of Hollywood sequels, remakes, adaptations, and spinoffs. In fact, you have to go all the way down to the 21st-most-successful film of 2024 to find a wholly-original property. That movie was John Krasinski's "If," and chances are that one'll probably get a sequel too.
It's no surprise that people like things they're already familiar with. As University of Surrey lecturer Erica Hepper, Ph.D., told The Huffington Post, "Nostalgia is the warm, fuzzy emotion that we feel when we think about fond memories from our past." People want to watch characters they already know because it feels good to see someone you're familiar with, and the industry seems to be leaning into this more than ever.

First, Dan Trachtenberg delivered an unexpected and brilliant prequel to the Predator franchise with Prey, and then Fede Álvarez directed one of the best entries in the Alien saga with Alien: Romulus – and both under the banner of Disney, which many people believed would be the death of both franchises. Following the trailer for Trachtenberg’s next movie, Predator: Badlands, which features an Alien Easter egg in the form of Elle Fanning’s android character being created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, a new rumor has now hinted that the inevitable crossover of the two sci-fi franchises will be happening a lot sooner than anyone expected.
Coming from Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic - so you can accept this with a nominal amount of disbelief for now - Álvarez’s Romulus sequel will reportedly feature a Predator in some way, bringing the two franchises fully into alignment for the first...

We recently learned that Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is working on the script for a direct sequel to the block-busting sci-fi horror movie, and it sounds like the follow-up might just lay the groundwork for a new Alien vs. Predator film.
Álvarez confirmed that he's currently developing the story during a recent interview with Empire, while promising that the movie will take the classic franchise "into uncharted waters."
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
Alvarez also reiterated that the current plan is to follow the survivors of the previous film, Cailee Spaeny’s Rain Carradine and her...

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), was a success – so it was no surprise to hear, just a couple of months after the film’s theatrical release, that 20th Century Studios was working with Álvarez to develop a sequel to the film. The director has previously said that the sequel will “go into uncharted waters. I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from (Alien: Romulus), to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.” Now, a Rumor has emerged that the film might be a bit of a crossover with another 20th Century Studios property, as a Predator could show up in it!

No one simply fires off one shot in "Havoc," the new bit of action mayhem from director Gareth Evans. When people aim their weapons here, they unleash an almost impossible torrent of rounds, shooting continuously, the soundtrack turned into a thunderous cacophony of gunfire. When the bullets finally do stop flying, your ears will be ringing. It's all a bit overwhelming, to the point where Evans' latest film, which is headed right to Netflix, starts to grow almost inadvertently comedic. By the time a climactic moment arrived where a character pointed an automatic weapon point-blank into someone and fired away while a fountain of blood splashed into their screaming face, I felt an uncontrollable urge to laugh at the violent absurdity of it all. Yes, make no mistake: "Havoc" is violent to the extreme. But this raises a question: how much fun can be had from watching so much senseless violence?...
