Books and TV shows have had a special relationship for over a century now. There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

2025 is an exciting summer for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hot off the release of "Thunderbolts*," the franchise is set to expand even further into the multiverse with the highly-anticipated release of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" in July, but some of the biggest news in the film series is happening off-screen. Currently, "Avengers: Doomsday" is in production, though the release of it and "Avengers: Secret Wars" has been pushed back, now set to release in December of 2026 and 2027, respectively.
These new crossover films have already been confirmed to feature the introduction of many "X-Men" characters into the MCU, with the likes of Ian McKellan, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn officially reprising their roles as the mutants Magneto, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Mystique. They'll be joining other "X-Men" characters like Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier or Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, previously brought into the MCU in parallel universes.

The Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal saw Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and Deadpool & Wolverine's Channing Tatum (Gambit) all board the movie.
Characters like Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Storm (Halle Berry), and Rogue (Anna Paquin) are all notable by their absence, as is Hugh Jackman's Wolverine (though we got a potentially positive update on that front yesterday). We expect to see a bigger X-Men team than the one above, perhaps with a few new Multiversal Variants added to the mix for good measure.
Back to those confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, and Cumming's Nightcrawler remains one of the most beloved characters from the X-Men franchise, despite only appearing in 2003's X2: X-Men United.

Stephen Moyer revealed that starring in True Bloodcompletely changed his opinion on the vampire subgenre — for the better. Throughout all seven seasons of the HBO horror-drama series, Moyer played vampire Bill Compton, love interest to protagonist Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and the epitome of a courtly Southern gentleman. Though Bill may have had a tragic ending in the True Blood series finale, the actor is clearly still happy to talk about the series.
Recently, while promoting his new show, Art Detectives, Moyer sat down with Colliderand discussed not only True Blood, but also how the series saw him completely reversing his opinion about vampires and what they mean. Moyer sang the praises of True Blood showrunner Alan Ball for opening his eyes to the concept of vampires as a metaphor for those who experience "otherness" in society, whether that's people of color or those in the LGBTQ+ community. If you’re a fan of Black Mirror, you might be wondering what could fill the void of the sci-fi viewing lineup since the end of season 7. While Black Mirror has become the go-to for dark, tech-driven cautionary tales, there’s another anthology series that deserves fans’ attention but has not quite gotten its due.
With Bryan Cranston both starring and producing, this show brings mind-bending stories of one of the greatest sci-fi authors, Philip K. Dick. While it shares Black Mirror‘s focus on technology’s impact on society, this show offers a bit more hope and humanity. And the series is Electric Dreams, a perfect alternative for sci-fi fans.

Arguably, one of the most recognizable and popular Marvel comic book franchises is the X-Men. The world can be complicated, add to it the existence of both good and bad people with special abilities a.k.a. the mutants, and you have a story that continues to thrill, enamor, and entertain audiences.
The X-Men comprised of two sides: Charles Xavier / Professor X's team of mutants who seek to protect humanity, and Magneto's acolytes hellbent on controlling the human race. Each mutant had a unique name, ability, personality, and design.
As popular as these characters were, they wouldn't arrive on the big screen until the 2000 film X-Men. Regardless of the differences in the story from the original source material, including costume changes, this film put X-Men in a whole new light, perhaps becoming the catalyst for the superhero films that followed. Filmax, the Barcelona-based studio behind [Rec] and The Nameless, is bringing new psychological horror movie The Nest to the Cannes market, Variety reports today.
Directing The Nest is Hugo Stuven (Solo) from a script by Santiago Lallana (Solo), César de Nicolás and Stuven.
The horror movie follows “Marta, who is so obsessed with protecting her family from the terrifying outside world that she keeps her mother and young son locked in their mountain village home. Everything seems to go well until one day a man arrives, intent on destroying everything Marta has built.”
Michelle Jenner (Bird Box: Barcelona) stars.
“’The Nest’ has all the elements of a classic suspense movie and the story it tells of what goes on behind the closed doors of one family is both disturbing and terrifying,” producer Laura Fernández at Filmax told Variety.

Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful characters introduced in the MCU. However, given how the character performed in theatres and with audiences, it would not be surprising if the MCU top brass are disappointed.
While the first Captain Marvel, which grossed well over a billion dollars, was boosted by being a film between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the second film received poor word-of-mouth and was further bogged down by the fact that the SAG AFTRA strikes prevented the actors from promoting the film until just a few days before the release date.
While there could have been many things that Captain Marvel could have done for the MCU. Unfortunately, the character seems to have failed to resonate with audiences. However, the MCU has the perfect opportunity to give the character a storyline that fans would be happy to see her play, especially with the X-Men on their way.

Alexander Skarsgård has had an impressive and long career with roles spanning different emotional spans, continents, and genres. He has been a blood-thirsty vampire to different kinds of complex villains, to even existentially varying androids.
His performance in different roles has been unexpected, unforgettable, and layered to perfection. Whether it is the first time for you to see him perform in the upcoming Apple TV+ show, Murderbot, or have followed his work through the years. Let’s dive into some of his most notable works across the years.
1. True Blood: Eric Northman (2008-2014)
One of Skarsgård’s breakout roles was in True Blood, where he played the role of Eric Northman. He was a 1000-year-old Viking vampire in the show that aired on HBO. Initially, he was introduced as a merciless enforcer, but with time, his character arc grew brilliantly, and he became one of the most loved and complex characters on the show.

When the 98th annual Oscars arrives next year, it will come with the addition of one long-desired new category: an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Two years later, the 100th annual Oscars will include its own new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. After that? We’ve got a few ideas for some other additions.
Both the casting and stunt design awards arrive after years of campaigning from artisans, filmmakers, stars, and even the general public. Make a good enough case, it seems, and AMPAS just might grant you an Oscar statuette-sized wish. Still, it does take time: Before the casting award was announced, the ceremony had not added a new award since 2001, when the organization added Best Animated Feature Film.
Last week’s announcement of the new stunt design category inevitably got us wondering: What other categories should the Oscars add? From bringing back an old favorite, cribbing from other awards shows,...

Channing Tatum has finally talked about his involvement inAvengers: Doomsday, but is he actually playing Gambit? After years of trying to get a Gambit solo film off the ground, Tatum finally realized his lifelong dream of playing the iconic X-Men character in Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum's Gambit was a scene-stealer, and many were shocked but delighted to see Tatum's name on the Avengers: Doomsday cast list.
At Cinema Con, Tatum spoke to Extra about his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite everyone assuming Tatum is playing Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum did play coy with the fact that no character names were confirmed, only the actors involved. In what proved to be a pretty male-heavy cast unveiling, it took no time at all for fans to point out the absence of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Storm (Halle Berry), and Rogue (Anna Paquin).

Despite the claims that people are done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans tuned in for a five-hour news stream of chairs being brought out that confirmed the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. Many MCU teams were present, including The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts, along with heroes like Captain America, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Thor, to name a few. Yet, the biggest shock was the inclusion of so many X-Men characters.
There have been X-Men teases throughout the McU's Multiverse Saga, notably Patrick Stewart's cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammer as Beast at the end of The Marvels, and of course, various X-Men characters like Deadpool, Wolverine, Gambit, and X-23 in Deadpool & Wolverine. Yet Avengers: Doomsday not only confirmed that Stewart and Grammer were returning, but so would Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique,...

For anyone who remembers waiting around on Facebook Live for hours to watch a giant block of ice melt just to reveal the premiere date of a new season of “Game of Thrones,” today Marvel spent an obscenely long amount of time getting people to watch the backs of an increasingly long line of chairs just to see who was in the cast for its upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” movie.
At least the “Game of Thrones” thing was interactive; it asked people to type in “Fire” to get the thing to melt.
Starting at 8 a.m. Pt this morning, Marvel rolled out a livestream in which the studio slowly — Very slowly — counted down every star who would appear in its upcoming team-up film, panning ever so slightly to the right to reveal the back of a new on-set chair, all set up in a row. How big was this sound stage?...

2000’s X-Men started the epic franchise and a new era of comic book movies, but how did it really end?
Back in 2000, comic book movies were in a downturn with some thinking the genre was dead. Then X-Men came along to revive it. The monster hit not only brought the beloved mutants to life but grounded them in a realistic way to influence scores of other films, including the MCU.
The movie made a star out of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine with a top-notch cast and Bryan Singer’s direction was sensational. It combined into a hit film that was backed by a great storyline.
How does X-Men play out?
The movie focuses on Wolverine as he’s hunted by Magneto (Ian McKellan) and his Brotherhood of Mutants. He and young Rogue (Anna Paquin) are taken in by the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) with Cyclops (James Marsden...

American Beauty was the first film directed by Sam Mendes, released in 1999 to huge critical and commercial acclaim; 25 years on, society has shifted. Kevin Spacey, who was once lauded for his performance as Lester Burnham is no longer in favor. Two decades ago, this film was still considered challenging, but it would be career napalm in this contemporary climate. With a male protagonist who embraces middle age by lusting after high school girls, flipping burgers, and smoking pot, this movie would never get made today. However, American Beauty does exist and is about a lot more than that.
Screenwriter Alan Ball is best known for True Blood starring Anna Paquin, but none of that happens without American Beauty. He also created Six Feet Under in the afterglow of his Oscar glory, which ran for 5 seasons and won 9 Emmys. Looking back on American Beauty in the aftermath of all that creative collateral,...

With three MCU movies opening this year, and The Avengers: Doomsdaystarting production in England in March, all eyes are turning to the next major franchise and phase, The X-Men. And with the discovery and introduction of adamantium in Captain America: Brave New World, fans are finally getting their first hints of Marvel's famous mutants. Rumors have been flying about who could be cast in different roles, and the latest is The Substance's Margaret Qualley might be starring as Rogue.
Take this rumor from Jeff Sneider with a grain or two of salt, but he's saying that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are considering Qualley to take on the role of Rogue, who was famously played by Anna Paquin in the original Fox movies. It should be noted that Sneider isn't sure if she's the main actress Marvel is considering, or one of several.

For those with Hollywood dreams, whether it's acting in films or directing them, their biggest aspiration may be to win an Oscar. "Academy Award winner" would be forever attached to their name, and presumably, doors would open in their careers that had never opened before.
While the Oscars certainly recognize performers and filmmakers for their exceptional talents and place them in a class above the rest, they also bring high expectations. After winning, there will always be pressure to live up to that title, which may be impossible to achieve again. This is part of the dreaded "Oscar curse." What happens after you've achieved the biggest honor in Hollywood?
Oscar campaigns and wins can be just as much of a story as the movies themselves. Hollywood's publicity machine spins a specific narrative to help an artist win the coveted award — the higher the stakes or the more cultural impact, the better.

The X-Men casting rumors continue to swirl, and this latest report is sure to get a lot of attention.
According to The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider, The Substance star Margaret Qualley is being eyed for the role of Rogue.
Rogue, real name Anna Marie, is easily one of the most popular members of the team, and fans have been hoping to see a comic-accurate take on the sassy Southern belle in live-action for many years. Anna Paquin played a younger version of the character in 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies, but she didn't really have much in common with her comic book counterpart.
Qualley's acclaimed turn in The Substance has made her a hot commodity in Hollywood, so it was probably only a matter of time before a major superhero franchise came calling.
Though we're still waiting on an official announcement, Marvel does seem to be making moves on this project behind-the-scenes.

During the early 2000’s, horror was on a mission to shake things up and keep audiences on the edge of their seats—literally. Gone were the days of predictable slasher flicks; this was an era where psychological scares, supernatural thrills, and mind-bending twists took center stage. In 2002, a film called Darkness decided to challenge its viewers with just that. Perhaps your house was a little too quiet or your lights flickered just a bit too often, or maybe your house was home to a cult practicing satanic rituals? This creepy flick stars Anna Paquin, who moves into a seemingly charming countryside home with her family—except this house has more than just creaky floors and drafty windows. It’s practically the poster child for “homes you definitely shouldn’t buy,” with a dark past that’s more twisted than a haunted house ride. As the shadows grow longer and the walls seem to close in,...

Quan, who worked as a stunt coordinator in the first X-Men movie, says Jackman was born for the role, one that he's been doing for almost 25 years.
Quan appeared on the Josh Horowitz podcast Happy Sad Confusedto promote his recently released movie, Love Hurts. Quan also spoke about how his career had a huge twist after he won the Oscar in 2024. The actor left the Hollywood spotlight after being featured in major '80s films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and fully turned to behind-the-scenes work as a stunt coordinator and choreographer.

DeWanda Wise might be taking flight again, but this time it could be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the beloved X-Men character Storm. The actress portrayed pilot Kayla Watts in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, but if the rumor mill is any indication, the MCU might have its sights set on casting Wise as the fan-favorite Mutant Ororo Munroe.
Please remember that until Marvel Studios confirms the casting report posted to X, formerly Twitter, by scooper MyTimeToShineHello, the news of Wise possibly taking up Storm’s electrifying mantle is strictly a rumor. Now, the social media post succinctly reads as follows:

As we approach the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, excitement is at an all-time high when it comes to the arrival of the X-Men. Audiences around the world have been waiting years for Marvel's Mightiest Mutants to debut in the MCU and now it's only a matter of time until they arrive.
The Multiverse Saga made those hopes and dreams a reality - or at least the start of that reality, for we have had nods and references to the X-Men throughout this chapter. And with relatively recent appearances from Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Kelsey Grammer's Beast and Patrick Stewart's Professor X, it's clear that the mutants' time is almost upon us. So much so, in fact, that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has termed the next chapter of the MCU as "The Mutants Era".

A staple of Hollywood since the earliest days of cinema, gangster crime movies have formed an intrinsic part of popular culture. Several of the genre's most beloved and influential outings have been acclaimed by fans and critics alike, with many of the finest examples lauded as some of the best movies of all time. From the early days of iconic entries like The Public Enemy all the way to more modern standouts like The Departed, gangster flicks have been captivating audiences with their thrilling stories and nuanced examinations of criminality.
Along the way, cinema has witnessed several gangster movies that have defined the genre in their own unique way. Gangster films have been a staple of entertainment for over a century. The conflict between the law and the lawless, jam-packed with drama and violence, has kept people flocking to the theaters for excessive entertainment. Gangster films date back to 1906 with a Humphrey Bogart film called The Black Hand and have cumulatively raked in billions at the box office, demonstrating their popularity within the film world. Crime has always been a favorite genre due to the historical realism portrayed on screen.
However, many gangster films are labeled as "true stories" and the content on screen is erroneous. Historical inaccuracies often occur in film, but it happens even more frequently in some of the most popular gangster films. Between classics like Scarface and recent entries like The Irishman, plenty of great gangster movies stray from fact.

Hulu has added some great original series to the streaming service, including the sequel sitcom How I Met Your Father and chilling documentary series like Killing County. Between the streaming service's originals, and their partnership with networks like Fxx, they have amassed a broad collection of bingeworthy drama series that offer something different for every viewer. Of the genres they offer, romance is always a fan-favorite, with new hits and old classics for audiences to enjoy.
Among that collection are some of the steamiest romance series on TV, like Rivals and High Fidelity. Hulu also has a collection of complex dramas that mix their sexy themes with action, thrills, and comedy. When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

While actors, writers, and directors often want to continue indefinitely when they’ve got a hit TV show on their hands, it’s always disappointing for audiences when a show continues past its prime. It can be tempting to continually renew a show when there’s a willing audience eagerly excited about a new season, but this often leads to series that continue well past their prime and are artificially extended with convoluted plotlines and a rotating cast of main characters. There were even some shows that peaked early and should have ended with season one, yet continued needlessly for years on end.
Some hit TV shows had the potential to be among the best shows ever made, yet too many seasons meant they lost their appeal, and viewers slowly lost interest and stopped watching. Other examples had an excellent premise in their earliest seasons, but they decided to introduce...

For a wide variety of reasons, many beloved actors eventually retire from Hollywood and shift their focus toward something else. However, not every actor can stay away forever. Sometimes, a role is so enticing that it is enough to bring an actor out of retirement for one last great performance. These returns to the big screen can be incredibly exciting for audiences, particularly for fans who have spent years hoping to see their favorite star back in theaters once again.
It is also important to note that some of these performances didn't end up being the "last hurrahs" that they were expected to be. Sometimes, a single role is enough to rekindle an actor's passion for their craft, leading them to launch a whole new era of their career. Others, of course, merely wanted to perform one last time before returning to retirement. Whether they decided to continue their career...

Horror movies are the perfect films to watch during Halloween, making it the holiday of choice for many of them. Eli Roth's slasher movie Thanksgiving brought a heaping helping of horror on another day of the year. While it's certainly a change of pace, it's not the only explicitly holiday-themed scary movie.
Christmas is another popular time to spread holiday fear, with some movies decking the halls with bowels of victims. Conversely, one fearsome movie explores the concept of a particularly bad birthday through the lens of another "holiday" movie. Add in a European pagan celebration for the changing of seasons, and it's clear that Thanksgiving will have some seasonal competition from discerning movie lovers.

Hugh Jackman might have been the unbreakable Wolverine on screen, but Anna Paquin remembers him being put through the wringer while filming the first X-Men. During an interview, Paquin, who played Rogue in the 2000 Marvel blockbuster, shared her behind-the-scenes perspective on Jackman’s grueling stunts. “It’s minus 40 [degrees], and he’s being dropped off some building onto his back repeatedly,” she recalled.
Paquin admitted that watching her co-star endure the punishment wasn’t easy. “He got put through the wringer on that first one and never complained,” she said, emphasizing Jackman’s unshakable professionalism. Despite the physical toll, Jackman remained “a lovely, gracious human being,” according to Paquin. Their bond, forged during long hours on set, made the ordeal even harder to witness.
The two actors shared most of their scenes in X-Men, building an on-screen mentor-student dynamic that extended off-screen.

However, before Manganiello gained commercial success in films, his breakthrough performance came on the fantasy horror drama series True Blood. The horror genre keeps churning out great movies, such as the intoxicating Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. Part of its success is how it's able to produce movies that not only terrify audiences with gross-out scenes or a well-timed jump-scare, but also be a ton of fun. A great example of this is the Terrifier series, with Terrifier 3's funniest moments arriving among the requisite brutality and gore. Thanks mainly to Art the Clown's silent, but deadly, humor.
However, it's not just more recent horror films that have managed to be creepy as all hell, while bringing some solid fun along the way. Classic franchises have gained popularity thanks to quick-witted villains like Freddy Krueger, who is also incredibly creepy. The great thing about the horror genre is its ability to bring audiences together, to share an experience that'll be intense, and uncomfortable at times, but also a lot of fun.

Nicole Kidman, an Oscar-winning actor, has publicly said that she wants to work with legendary director Martin Scorsese, but with one important condition: he must make a movie about women.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Kidman talked about working with Scorsese as one of her dream projects and brought up the current discussion about how women are portrayed in his movies. Even though Scorsese has had a very successful career, most of the film he has directed have been about men, starring stars like Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Recent events point to a change in this trend. Lily Gladstone’s performance in Scorsese’s most recent movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, gave a woman a major part. She was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar, which is a big change in how the director treats female roles.

Nicole Kidman Says She’s Always Wanted to Work With Martin Scorsese – ‘If He Does a Film With Women’
Nicole Kidman named Martin Scorsese as one of her dream directors to work with — but he’d have to do “a film with women” first.
“I’ve always said I want to work with Scorsese, if he does a film with women,” Kidman said during an interview with Vanity Fair, published Wednesday.
“I’d love to work with Kathryn Bigelow,” the actress continued. “I’d love to work with Spike Jones. I’d love to work with PTA [Paul Thomas Anderson]. I’ve always wanted to work with Michael Haneke. And there’s a whole slew of new up-and-coming directors — there’s so many, and I’m always open to the discovery of new people.”
