Carl Weathers, who starred as Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films and appeared in Predator, The Mandalorian, Happy Gilmore, Action Jackson and dozens of other films and TV shows, died Tuesday, his family announced. He was 76.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

So ran the narration at the beginning of the title sequence for the 1983 TV series "The A-Team." The "if you can find them" part always elicited titters from certain younger viewers, as the A-Team's devotion to helping people out as soldiers of fortune clearly didn't extend to being easy to reach. The A-Team was composed of five members, including the leader Hannibal (George Peppard), the charming Templeton "Faceman" Peck (Dirk Benedict), the zany "Howling Mad" Murdoch (Dwight Schultz), and their black Gmc Vandura van.

"You're The Best" by Joe Esposito was originally written for Rocky III but ended up being the perfect fit for The Karate Kid. "Eye Of The Tiger" by Scorpions was chosen for Rocky III instead of "You're The Best" and became a huge hit associated with the franchise. The song "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera, originally rejected for Rocky IV, became a hit for The Karate Kid 2 instead.

There are a number of TV shows that are known to have spawned other series, but some of these produced more spinoffs than are remembered. For their 750th episode, The Simpsons pulls out all the stops, and adds a dangerous curve, but never quite gets in full gear. “Homer’s Adventures Through the Windshield Glass” is ambitious, cramming 750 characters into the opening sequence, jamming with Lizzo to the beat of a slap-happy Homer in the end, and spending the creamy middle somewhere between heaven and hell. It is a very creative episode, teasing a glimpse of paradise which turns into the purgatory of a lukewarm season finale which was cooked on all burners.

While couch gags can foretell mediocre episodes, the full opening sequence, complete with a chalkboard gag, is always a welcome sight. The cramming of all the Springfield residents, characters, and celebrity guests, is expertly layered. Even Homer’s crash through the garage reveals greater wonders as Fat Tony and Mr. T can be seen through the splinters.

The fourth-wall-breaking playfulness of Deadpool makes his stories especially open to surprise celebrity appearances, and one comic has already set the stage for the perfect cameo in his next movie: none other than Mr. T. When you watch a "Rocky" movie, it's easy to get swept up in the sweeping boxing matches. How could you not, when the Italian Stallion is up against larger-than-life opponents like Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Clubber Lang (Mr. T), and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren)? But while the fights are the main attraction, it's the moments in between that provide a greater emotional connection to the plight of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to succeed against incredible odds.

In the 1976 film, Rocky spends just as much time trying to woo Adrian (Talia Shire), the local pet store clerk, as he does on his actual training for the big bout. The emotional catharsis of the final scene doesn't see the celebration of a victory, but the conclusion to a complicated love story.

Rocky III saw Sylvester Stallone's titular character go up against Clubber Lang, though a real-life prominent 70s boxer almost played the latter. Clubber Lang is introduced as a vicious, hungry new boxer who challenges Rocky after accusing him of fighting easier opponents throughout his career. The character in the film was played by iconic action star Mr. T, which is a very different type of casting than what could have been.

Initially, the antagonistic boxer was intended to be played by someone else. This would have kickstarted the trend that was seen in the Creed films which saw real fighters like Tony Bellew playing the titular character's opponent. As revealed by Stallone, who will not return for Creed III, on his Instagram, Mr. T's casting was initially very different.

There are generally two main schools of thought on "Rocky IV:" You can bemoan how ridiculous the franchise had become since the grittiness of the Oscar-winning original film, or celebrate it for finally shrugging off all semblance of reality to become such a glorious example of '80s excess. I say life is too short for the former and, while it is the most thinly plotted of the series to that point, I still love "Rocky IV" for the bombastic sports cartoon that it is.
