The Abyss may be a classic James Cameron film, but it's also noted for some bad behavior behind the scenes. Now, one controversial incident has gotten the film into hot water.
The movie has been pulled from Disney+ in the UK because of animal rights concerns. In one scene, a rat is placed in a vat of fluorocarbon liquid and is in distress - and that was a real rat in real distress; no special effects were used. The scene horrified animal rights charities, and Britain's Rspca - the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - campaigned to have the scene removed from all British showings of the film.
They succeeded. The scene has never been available on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray copies of The Abyss in the UK, and it was also cut whenever the movie aired on TV. But a legal loophole ensured it could...

Blindspot is now on Netflix, and there are some good reasons to watch this NBC drama that still holds up well!
Premiering on NBC in 2015, the opening scene of Blindspot grabs you from the start. When a large bag is found in the middle of Times Square, there are worries it’s a bomb. Instead, it’s a woman (Jaimie Alexander) with no memory of her past whose naked body is covered in tattoos. These tattoos somehow form clues to either past crimes or those about to be committed.
Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) heads up an FBI unit dedicated to finding out what the tattoos mean, who did them, and just who Jane Doe (as they call her) really is. The show ran for five seasons, wrapping up in 2020. It’s now hitting Netflix in full for a great binge, and here are some reasons why if you didn’t see it on NBC,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5 “Lago D’Averno.”] Isabella Spezzano (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) takes matters into her own hands in the Law & Order: Organized Crime episode that dropped on Peacock on Thursday, May 8. It was a family affair at her house when her brother, who paid someone off to pose as him in prison in Italy, showed up to kill her grandson, Roman (Alberto Frezza), who was not doing well after being shot in the shootout in Season 5 Episode 4. Though Isabella tried standing her ground, armed, she was overpowered and tied to a chair — and her finger cut off! Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) did show up to help, only for Isabella to be killed anyway … or so he thought, at first. But once she was at the coroner’s (Welcome back, Tamara ...

Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 continues this week as the crew of the Organized Crime Control Bureau tries to suss out who is behind the newest operation. Where things left off in Episode 3, "Paranza dei Bambini," Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) was meeting up with his son, Eli (Nick Torchia), and Eli's pregnant girlfriend, Becky (Kiaya Scott), were all shot at by assailants on a motorbike with an automatic weapon. Now, in "Promesse Infrante," premiering tomorrow exclusively on Peacock, we're seeing the aftermath of that and another Occb team member heading undercover.
Collider is thrilled to exclusively reveal a new sneak peek from the episode. In the sneak peek, Detective Bobby Reyes (Rick Gonzalez), Professor Kyle Vargas (Tate Ellington), and Sgt. Disney+ just added James Cameron’s most underrated film which helped pave the way for Avatar in the best format possible!
James Cameron stands tall among the filmmakers of his generation. The writer/director may not have the best reputation, and many mock his writing. But there’s no denying that few filmmakers have transformed the game like Cameron with his stunning visual style.
His resume speaks for itself: The Terminator/Terminator 2, Aliens, True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar and its sequels. Cameron could boast the two highest-grossing films of all time as well as scores of Oscars. Cameron’s love of film and his amazing special effects have influenced scores of filmmakers and FX guys for decades.
However, one entry in Cameron’s filmography has been overlooked. A movie that was good in its time but built up a bigger following in the years since. It’s a groundbreaker...

If you’ve ever wanted to watch Det. Elliot Stabler speak Italian while sporting his circa 2019 hair, boy, is this week’s Law & Order: Organized Crime for you.
Stabler has barely healed from his near-fatal T-boning when he gets pulled into a case involving a Mafia-like organization. Put on the water for some pasta and uncork a nice chianti, because we’re taking a peek at his sojourn in Italy — complete with a cameo by a very-much-alive-then Kathy.

When it rains, it pours -- especially in terms of terrible movies. Like bleach, they burn into your retinas and seep all the way to the brain, refusing to let anyone forget about what they just watched. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Even in the darkest days, there's a shining light, a twinkle of redemption, an actor who makes the whole ordeal that much more bearable.
Valiantly, saviors like Raul Julia in "Street Fighter" and Uma Thurman in "Batman & Robin" gallop onto the screen to defend the honor of cinema from the misdeeds committed by their respective movies. They fight for the audience, helping to turn mayhem into magic (if only for the times they're on screen) and bring joy to the joyless.
So, let us salute the brave soldiers who never gave up when others clearly did. Let us acknowledge the actors who saved terrible movies.

Ed Harris did not come on like a clear-cut leading man 44 years ago when he starred in George A. Romero's awesomely offbeat "Knightriders," but there was something about the balding 32-year-old actor with the piercing, Paul Newman-esque blue eyes that commanded your attention. He could be steely, tender, and a bit of a goof. These qualities continued to be evident in films like "The Right Stuff," "Alamo Bay," and "Sweet Dreams," so he finally got a chance to co-anchor a massive Hollywood production in 1989 with James Cameron's "The Abyss." He aced the assignment (as did his co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), but the film underperformed at the box office (even though it's still the best thing Cameron's ever directed), so he became more of a character actor throughout the 1990s while he personally developed his next leading role.

The new season of Law & Order: Organized Crime is right around the corner, and the anticipation is starting to boil over. Fans are eager to see what is next for Detective Elliot Stabler and his team to fight over the powerful crime syndicate spinoff that has made it stand out in the Law & Order universe. Meanwhile, Organized Crime follows a different pattern from the original.
It has completely ditched the part where the first half of the show focuses on the policing side, collecting evidence, investigating witnesses, and bringing in the culprit. The second section involves the prosecution side of the procedure, which means courtroom sessions, studying the case, and finally sending out a verdict that decides the fate of the accused. This was a popular format Law & Order followed since it had viewers hooked.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron's blockbuster science fiction series, is set to hit theaters this winter. But if you can't want to return to Pandora, Disney+ is ready to take you to another one of Cameron's alien worlds. The Abyss, Cameron's groundbreaking 1989 deep-sea thriller, will stream in 4K on the service starting on April 11, 2025.
The Abyss was Cameron's first film after his megahit Aliens, and he was given a $43 million Usd budget to work with. The production of the film was harrowing for both cast and crew, as the extensive underwater scenes proved to be exceptionally difficult and exhausting to shoot. Actor Ed Harris refuses to speak about it to this day, while co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has simply stated "The Abyss was a lot of things. Fun to make is not one of them." We have a date for when Law & Order: Organized Crime comes to Peacock and the first look at Elliot Stabler back in action!
Everyone knows the Law & Order franchise has been a cash cow for NBC. For a while, Thursdays were Law & Order nights with the return of the iconic crime show, followed by the long-running Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and then Law & Order: Organized Crime.
In May of 2024, while doing renewals, NBC surprised everyone by announcing that season 5 of Organized Crime would not be airing on the network but rather on Peacock. Now, we have a date as the series will make its Peacock debut on April 17.
It’s a surprising move yet it may work given the show and its storyline. The series brought back Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), who had been a top cop on Svu for 12 seasons. Returning after years working in Europe,...

Reboots are all the rage now, and here’s a quick rundown of every network show that is getting the treatment!
“Everything old is new again” surely applies to TV these days. It’s like you can’t flip a channel or put on a streamer without a new take on an old show, some of which went off the air not that long ago. Paramount+ just canceled the revival of Fraiser and some old cable shows like White Collar may get the sequel treatment soon.
For network shows, it looks like reboots won’t be dying anytime soon. Networks rely on name recognition for a TV show and often help if the original actors or creators take part in it. Some shows may seem to not need a reboot, while others are shows fans would love to see coming back.

Ever think the way movies are made has gotten a little…well, safe? Kevin Costner sure does. And when the actor known for his versatile roles and iconic performances speaks up about Hollywood’s recent choices, you can bet it’s worth listening.
Kevin Costner and Christian Slater in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) | Credit: Warner Bros.
There’s something almost poetic about Costner’s view on the state of cinema. He’s not just an actor; he’s a storyteller who’s seen it all—decades in the business and a deep connection to the craft. But behind his usual stoic exterior lies a man who isn’t afraid to speak the truth, even if it involves a cheeky revelation. Speaking of cheeks, there’s a rather amusing tale involving Costner and his bare bottom.

One of NBC's most underrated dramas is the 2010 series Grimm. The fantasy series was stylized as a police procedural and followed a detective named Nick Burkhardt. Nick learns he comes from a family of monster hunters known as Grimms, and he has the ability to see magical creatures known as Wesen. Grimm follows Nick as he learns about Wesen and their world and must keep the peace between humans and Wesen.
Grimm does a great job of crafting a complex world through intensive worldbuilding that includes a variety of species, political beliefs, and intensive history. This expert creation of a secret world sets the series apart from similar series that blends mystery and the paranormal. Grimm is a fantastic watch for those seeking a unique paranormal series.

Nine ball — one of the numerous variations of pool, the cue sport. The striking game (widely known for its hustling and gambling culture) started in the United States of America sometime in the 1920s and has been going strong ever since. This is no criticism, though, as there are some sorely underrated movies revolving around cue sports in general, such as 1980's The Baltimore Bullet (featuring the legendary James Coburn), 2002’s Poolhall Junkies (starring Chazz Palminteri), and The Rack Pack (a 2016 British TV film about snooker). The popular drama “Law & Order: Organized Crime” enters its fifth season, navigating another key leadership shift and preparing for a major network changeover.
The series, featuring Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler, is filming its ten-episode season. The series’ relocation from NBC to Peacock is the most noticeable shift, which may provide fresh storytelling chances. Despite these limitations, the show stays devoted to its character-driven narrative approach.
Fans can expect Christopher Meloni to reprise his role as Stabler. At the same time, actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio will delve into the detective’s history. Most scripts for the season have already been completed, and production has begun following a brief hiatus.

Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 continues to progress despite the exit of its most recent showrunner. The Law & Order: Svu spinoff, starring Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler, follows the veteran cop's return to the NYPD as part of the Organized Crime Task Force. The series is known for its darker, serialized storytelling, distinguishing itself from the broader Law & Order franchise. While the show has undergone several showrunner changes since its 2021 debut, Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 is being developed for Peacock, marking a transition from its previous home on NBC.
According to Deadline, production on Law & Order: Organized Crime's fifth season is halfway complete, though the series currently lacks a showrunner. Recent seasons have been led by a string of showrunners such as Barry OBrien and Sean Jablonski, with David Graziano overseeing various episodes. Most recently, Ozark veteran John Shiban guided the show through its fourth season.

Al Pacino wishes he had won an Oscar for Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone as a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, and in turn based on the 1930 novel by Armitage Trail, the 1983 crime drama follows Cuban refugee Tony Montana, who arrives in Miami without money during the Mariel boatlift and rises to become a notorious drug kingpin. Al Pacino leads Scarface's cast as Tony Montana alongside Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, Mriam Coln, and F. Murray Abraham.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest gangster movies of the '80s, Scarface has been celebrated for years and constantly referenced in pop culture, thanks to its stylish violence, characterization, and skin-crawling immediacy. It is a remake of Howard Hawks 1932 pre-code crime movie of the same name, which was in turn based on Armitage Trails similarly titled novel. The original film was inspired by Al Capone, who had a scar on his face, hence the title. But rather than chart the same path, the remake took a different path by focusing on a Cuban immigrant who becomes Miamis top gangster.

Jessica Biel will no longer be The Good Daughter: The Emmy nominee has exited the upcoming Peacock limited series, according to our sister site Deadline, after signing on to star and executive-produce the project in March. A replacement for her is expected to be named soon.

Villain protagonists in movies are used to explore the darkest aspects of the human psyche. Some of the best crime movies feature morally depraved protagonists driven by greed. Villain-focused movies like Joker and Nightcrawler delve into toxic mentalities and societal issues.
Movies where the protagonist is also the villain tend to be from the horror and/or thriller genres, but there are possibilities beyond this. Everyone loves a good villain in the same vein as the best Disney villains who are pure evil, but movies where the main character is the villain are inherently darker. This structure is typically used to delve into the most disturbing aspects of the human psyche and what crimes a person will commit to get what they want.

Generally, actors are expected to promote their own movies. They're supposed to go on social media and talk shows to sing the praises of their film in order to get more people to see it. Such is the power of an A-list star that they can herd people into the movie theater just by mentioning their work.
But sometimes, famous actors outright refuse to promote their own movies. Sometimes they don't think the movie deserves it or sometimes it's for more complicated reasons. Whatever the case, these stars must have had studio higher-ups ripping their own hair out.

Scorsese's underrated classics reveal a different side of the acclaimed director's career beyond gangster films and heavy dramas. The Color of Money may not be Scorsese's best work, but it remains a well-liked sequel to the classic film, The Hustler. After Hours is a darkly hilarious departure for Scorsese, showcasing his filmmaking prowess outside of his usual themes.
Although Martin Scorsese is one of the most celebrated living directors, his prolific output means there are a few hidden gems dotted throughout his lengthy career. Calling Martin Scorseses work underrated seems almost delusional given how much critical acclaim the director has enjoyed throughout his career. Even Scorseses worst movies are ranked above the best movies of many other directors, and the filmmakers impact on the movie industry is immeasurable. Despite this, Scorsese has directed a surprisingly high number of movies that were unfairly forgotten or dismissed by critics upon their initial release.

Kevin Costner starred in the title role in the 1991 blockbuster film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Costner was brutally trolled for his performance due to his accent, but the film still made huge bucks for the producers. "The Color of Money" stands out as a spiritual sequel, showcasing Scorsese's exploration of corruption and redemption. "Casino" serves as an unofficial follow-up to "Goodfellas," focusing on different characters but with a similar feel.
Martin Scorsese doesnt like sequels. This attitude reflects Scorseses essential directorial approach, in which he has always been driven by an intense need to break new cinematic ground by continually exploring new characters and themes. While many of Scorseses colleagues feel compelled to infuse their films with a degree of vagueness for the purpose of establishing a foundation for a potential sequel, his films are invariably defined by a merciless sense of resolution regarding the lives of his characters. He hates loose ends.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Captain's Holiday", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was forced to take a vacation on the sexed-up beach resort planet of Risa where his impishly playful crew hoped he would have a drink, get laid, and return to the job less stern and more relaxed. Picard, a studious and intellectual fellow, would have been more content drinking tea and reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" in a dark room.
Luckily, Risa proves to be more exciting than Picard realized. He had no interest in beach shenanigans, but he did fall into the company of the utterly dazzling Indiana-Jone-type adventurer Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), a roguish tomb raider. Picard and Vash end up having to protect a rare, powerful artifact from time-traveling Vorgons, and fall in lust as a result. Picard returns to the Enterprise more relaxed and with a new romantic interest in the back of his mind.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.
