Superman's Nicholas Hoult Made His Acting Debut In This Forgotten Julie Walters Comedy
Image
Long before Nicholas Hoult gave viewers the best Lex Luthor performance of the 21st century, he was nailing his debut movie role in 1996's "Intimate Relations." The movie was about a 20-something British lodger in the 1950s who gets caught in a horrendous love triangle between a mother (played by Julie Walters) and her teenaged daughter. Although the movie is comedic, the love triangle still ends in bloodshed and tragedy, as they are wont to do.

Hoult plays the young Bobby, a kid who's just sort of on the sidelines, enjoying the mental health benefits that come with being unproblematic. Bobby only enjoys a few mere moments of screentime, but Hoult and his distinctive eyebrows make sure to take advantage of it, as you can see above.

Hoult hasn't spoken much about this movie, mainly because he was seven at the time and the role wasn't that substantial, but he...

‘Waterworld’ turns 30: Hollywood flop to cult classic — and its forgotten Oscar nomination
Image
Waterworld, the famously soggy epic starring Kevin Costner and directed by Kevin Reynolds, turns 30 today. Released on July 28, 1995, the film remains one of the most notorious Hollywood productions of its era, making waves for its astronomical budget and behind-the-scenes turmoil. Dubbed "Kevin's Gate" by the press, it faced a storm of negative attention long before audiences ever set sail. But in the three decades since its debut, Waterworld has gone from box-office cautionary tale to cult classic, with a devoted fan base, a legacy in live entertainment, and even a surprising brush with Oscar gold.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future where the polar ice caps have melted and Earth is submerged in water, Waterworld follows a mysterious drifter known as the Mariner (Costner), a gill-sporting loner navigating a flooded wasteland of floating cities, pirates, and mythical dry land. The film was one of the most expensive movies ever made at the time,...

Critically Panned Kevin Costner Bomb 'Waterworld' Has Found a New Streaming Home
Image
Waterworld, the infamous post-apocalyptic movie starring Kevin Costner, has arrived in streaming, giving modern audiences a chance to see one of the most divisive movies of the 1990s. The 1995 action film has been added to the Peacock library, and now you have an opportunity to re-evaluate the film that, at the time, was the most expensive film ever made, though it struggled at the box office.

The film takes place around the 2500s when the Earth suffered a cataclysmic apocalypse after the polar ice caps melted. Seawater apparently covers the entire planet and humans have found a way to survive aboard major floating structures. A lonely seaman spends his days trading whatever he can find during his exploration of the depths, and one day he finds a child who seems to hold the secret to arrive on dry land. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of Waterworld:

After the melting of the polar ice caps,...

Gosh! ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is a Streaming Hit, and So Is Jared Hess’ 21-Year-Old Cult Hit
Image
Jared Hess' A Minecraft Movie was one of the bigger surprise hits of the year, both in movie theaters and now on streaming. Riding the wave of its success is Hess' endlessly quotable directorial debut, which was an even bigger surprise hit in the summer of 2004, when an indie comedy with a cast full of unknowns became the sleeper hit of the year. Napoleon Dynamiteis now the #9 streaming movie on HBO Max, trailing A Minecraft Movie at #2.

Napoleon Dynamite has its origins in Peluca, a nine-minute black-and-white short film about a nerdy high school student. Directed by Hess and starring the then-unknown Jon Heder, the film was a hit at the Slamdance Film Festival, and Hess and his wife and producing partner, Jerusha Hess, secured $400,000 Usd to make a feature-length version of the film. Heder returned as the title character for the movie, which was shot in southern Idaho. The...

Napoleon Dynamite's Success Led To An Awful Animated Series That Was Canceled After 6 Episodes
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Jared Hess' oddball comedy "Napoleon Dynamite" was an enormous success when it was released back in 2004, making over $46 million on its tiny $400,000 budget. The film was just peculiar enough to attract a snarky audience of jeering twentysomethings who liked to quote the film's kooky dialogue and imitate lead actor Jon Heder's peculiar delivery. The title character lived in a boring city in Idaho, but, like a Wes Anderson character, also lived in a carefully constructed personal universe of his own. Napoleon was always confident and assured, even as he was relentlessly picked on at his high school. His fashion sense stunk, but he attacked the world with a strangely laconic self-assurance that one can't help but envy.

The character was striking enough to launch a miniature industry of "Vote for Pedro" T-shirts, sweaters, mugs, Funko Pops, bumper stickers, and Halloween costumes.

10 Best Joey King Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
At just 25 years old (as of writing), Joey King has been featured in over 70 films and television shows dating as far back as 2006. Given the sheer volume of work she takes on, it's not shock that many of these have been critical and commercial duds you've either never heard of or wish you'd never heard of, like the "Final Destination" riff-off "Wish Upon," the middling ghost romance "The In Between," and the irredeemably pandering sci-fi thriller "Uglies."

At the same time, King has consistently turned high-quality performances in some memorable projects. Fans of "The Dark Knight Rises," "Crazy Stupid Love," and "The Conjuring" are proof that she's been ready for almost any acting challenge since she first appeared on a screen. From her extensive resume, we picked out our favorite roles and ranked them based on quality and how well they showcase King as an actor.

Kevin Costner's Waterworld Almost Had A Totally Different Soundtrack
Image
Filmmaking undeniably requires craft, but it also requires something additional that is less easy to teach, harder to pin down, and impossible to replicate. In short, it requires a kind of magic, an alchemy between the collaborators, the material, and the time period in which the movie is made. Sure, most creative people who make films as a career learn little tricks and shortcuts in order to help facilitate this, but ultimately (and to the continual annoyance of the studio bean counters), it happens or it doesn't. Just as the right actor can elevate a character and the wrong sound effect can ruin a scene, a film's original score is a key ingredient in making this alchemical mixture of cinema. While the covenant between a composer and a director tends to produce just the right kind of score the film needs, sometimes the balance is off.

While it isn't all that common,...

30 Years Ago, Kevin Costner’s Post-Apocalyptic Drama Became One of the Most Expensive Films Ever Made
Image
When Kevin Costner'sWaterworld hit theaters in 1995, it was impossible to ignore the controversy behind the production. At the time, with an estimated budget of $175 million, it was the most expensive film ever made, a record that reflected its ambitious vision of a water-based post-apocalyptic world. But the film's large scale and setting, shot primarily on the water, created major challenges, driving up costs and delays, making Waterworld a high-risk gamble for Universal Studios.

Despite the struggles and the media frenzy around its budget, Waterworld didn’t crash and burn as expected. While its U.S. box office earnings were underwhelming, it found success overseas and had a second life in home video, TV reruns, and even a popular theme park stunt show. Though it never became the major blockbuster studios predicted, Waterworld still made its name in pop culture, evolving from a financial risk to a cult classic.

10 Best Megan Fox Movies, Ranked
Image
One of the most recognizable faces of the mid-2000s and 2010s, Megan Fox occupies a contentious position within Hollywood. While '90s babies were first introduced to Fox in films like "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" or the Mary-Kate and Ashley film "Holiday in the Sun," by 2007 she was best-known for playing eye candy in films like "Transformers."

The big question about Fox has always been, "Is she talented, or just hot?" Public opinion about Fox was not great following her breakout role in "Transformers." Many found her attractive (she was crowned "sexiest woman in the world" by FHM men's magazine in 2008), but these fans often didn't respect Fox either as a woman or an actress.

On the other hand, some found her deliberate sex appeal offensive or anti-feminist because she leaned into her sex symbol status and seemed okay with being objectified. Indeed, Fox has always been...

The Charlie Sheen & Hilary Duff Comedy That IMDb Users Consider One Of The Worst Movies Ever
Image
When "Toy Story" was released in the fall of 1995, it not only established Pixar Animation Studios as an upstart studio worth paying attention to, but it also made clear to the entire animation industry that there was a new way to tell stories. Nothing against hand-drawn animation, of course, but now there was proof that computer animation could bring a wonderful, funny, exciting tale to life just as well as other styles within the medium of animation.

That was both good and bad news. It was good news because it allowed for competition to spring up in places like DreamWorks Animation and Illumination Entertainment. But the bad news was that, as was also the case with hand-drawn animation, there would be always cheaper options available. Yes, computer animation was in its nascent years, but it would improve. What if, though, some studios weren't able to progress technologically and had to use old-school-looking computer animation?...

Penn Badgley, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, Jessica Szohr, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl (2007)
The Best Part Of Gossip Girl Was Michelle Trachtenberg
Penn Badgley, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, Jessica Szohr, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl (2007)
This article contains a discussion of addiction.

Based (very loosely) on Cecily von Ziegesar's book series, "Gossip Girl" started its run on The CW in 2007 and, in the hands of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, let us into the exclusive world of a bunch of uber-wealthy Manhattan teenagers, all of whom were played by beautiful twenty-somethings. The whole story begins with the return of the troubled but beautiful socialite Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), who ran away to boarding school in Connecticut after some sort of traumatizing life experience before the show's narrative began — and when she does come back to New York, she tries to start fresh. Unfortunately for her, that's not an option thanks to one conniving, unhinged troublemaker: Georgina Sparks, played to perfection by Michelle Trachtenberg.

When news broke that Trachtenberg passed away on February 26 at the age of 39, I thought of her starring role...

What Happened To The Cast Of Six Feet Under?
Image
When it first aired in 2000, "Six Feet Under" was unknowingly part of the dawn of a golden age of television. Alongside early-aughts HBO hits like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," the tragicomedy told the story of a family-run funeral home trying to make sense of life and death in the wake of the sudden loss of their father.

A revival has reportedly been in the works for some time, despite the fact that it would seemingly be in conflict with what is arguably the greatest series finale of a TV show ever. Still, the mere idea of a return to these loveable, complicated, and tragic characters makes us wonder what happened to the cast of "Six Feet Under?"

Why The Grinch's Cindy Lou Who Actress Taylor Momsen Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
Actress and rock 'n' roller Taylor Momsen made her screen debut at the age of three, appearing in a 1997 Shake 'n Bake commercial. In the ad, she noted that Shake 'n Bake dinners were an excellent sign of her mother's love, and she demonstrated the product with aplomb. It's Shake 'n Bake, and she helped. Momsen was also, at the time, working as a child model, something she recalls hating. In a 2011 interview with Bethesda, Momsen said that she recalls being busy a lot as a toddler and that she wasn't given a lot of time to spend with friends. Her whole life, she said, she was in and out of school.

That same year, while she was still in preschool, Momsen started appearing on a few TV shows, notably the 1997 "The Cosby Show" spinoff "Cosby," and in a 1998 episode of "Early Edition." Momsen's first feature film was director David Worth...

The Only Recurring Actors Still Alive From The Golden Girls
Image
If you're making a list of the most timeless sitcoms ever produced, "The Golden Girls" has to be at or near the top. Yes, it's so very 1980s with its Miami fashions and decor, but its themes and sense of humor have aged better than most hit series of its era. At any moment, you can hop on Hulu, click on a random episode, and know you'll laugh yourself silly while watching Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Rose Nylund (Betty White), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) get in some kind of jam and ultimately be reminded of the importance and power of friendship.

The writing on "The Golden Girls" was always sharp (it won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series twice), but the secret to its seven years of sustained success (it ranked in the Nielsen ratings top ten for all but its final season) was undoubtedly its cast.

TV mom Joanna Kerns remembers DiCaprio always messing around between takes. “He was totally mischievous,” she told The Independent. When Tobey Maguire, a member of DiCaprio’s infamous Pussy Posse, came around the set, “They looked like they were really up to no good.”

Napoleon Dynamite Star Reprises Role in New Video 20 Years Later

Napoleon Dynamite is endeared to an entire generation of audiences who came of age in the early 2000s. Jon Heder wants fans to know Napoleon is now even more awesome by showing off his new "upgrades."

Jared Hess' Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise hit at the global box office, earning almost $45 million within a year of release. The 2004 film remains a cult favorite because of its eclectic ensemble of characters, especially its titular character Napoleon (played by Jon Heder). The film ended on a promising note with Napoleon on good terms with Deb but it also begged for a sequel that never happened. Heder has since cameoed in character in talk shows and product commercials, but fans never really knew what happened to after the film's end credits. A short sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live finally showed an older Napoleon, who is now physically jacked.

‘Napoleon Dynamite’ Cast on Where Their Characters Are Today: ‘Not Looking Very Good’
Image
Napoleon Dynamite is 20 years old, but according to the movie’s cast, its lead characters probably aren’t doing so hot. “I think it's not looking very good for most of them,” laughed Jon Heder, the actor who played Napoleon, at a recent Q&a with fans.

The movie ends on a moment of triumph for Napoleon and Pedro, but in Heder’s view, it’s all downhill from there, according to a People report. “Napoleon is probably paying child support to two different moms, with two different kids,” Heder speculates. “Maybe Trisha was a fling. Like, ‘Let’s give it a go... No, I was right the first time.’”

Napoleon did end up dancing with Deb, Tina Majorino’s character, but Heder doesn’t have high hopes for that couple either. “It didn’t work out with Deb, but he really wants to make it work with Deb so he’s like,...

Tina Majorino: Where Deb From Napoleon Dynamite Is Now

Deb is part of a trio of quirky high schoolers in 2004's Napoleon Dynamite. Deb, a shy friend of Napoleon, sells trinkets and offers glamour photos to pay for college. Tina Majorino, who played Deb, also starred in Veronica Mars, showcasing her versatility as an actress.

Deb in Napoleon Dynamite is one-third of the strangest and funniest trio of high schoolers that has ever appeared in an indie film. Its listless story, aimless characters, and general lack of conflict make it a hard film to grasp, yet, it's one of the funniest movies of the 2000s and an unexpectedly heartfelt story. Grey’s Anatomy: The 10 Worst Character Exits
Image
Grey’s Anatomy has broken many hearts over its 20 seasons (and counting), but it’s also angered fans with how certain characters were written off. Realistically, no one wants to see their favorite character leave a show, but if it’s handled the right way, a good departure allows the legacy of the character to remain untouched.

While there are many factors that go into planning and handling a character’s exit, the final product can be hit or miss. Here are what we consider to be the worst and most unnecessary exits from TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama.

10. April Kepner

While April’s (Sarah Drew) departure in season 14 could be considered a “happy ending” for the character, it was deeply unsatisfying for viewers. She had apparently been dating Matthew (Justin Bruening), who she left at the altar, for months and didn’t tell anyone. That itself is surprising but...

Whatever Happened To Enola Actress Tina Majorino From Waterworld?
Image
In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.

Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Box Office Flops With Great Premises

Hollywood has a long and rich history of turning in some of the most intriguing stories in the domain of fiction, from deep dramas to epic blockbusters. However, even the best ideas don't always translate into box office success, and several factors can cause this under-performance. Even some genuinely great films just failed to find an audience, either from a saturated market or a poor roll-out in theaters.

Hollywood is always looking to find the next big hit in its films, but the market doesn't always reward good ideas, especially if the script is flat or the studio doesn't market the film well. Other movies can be doomed by a needlessly high budget, making it incredibly difficult to turn a profit at the box office. Many of these films stand as proof that a movie doesn't need to be successful to be good, while others stand as a testament to...

10 Classic Movies That Need Modern Remakes
Image
Hollywood has a long track record of remaking some of its greatest and most treasured films. From thrillers made in the 1940s to science fiction films of the '60s, many fans of classic movies have been lucky -- or unlucky -- enough to see their favorite stories get brought into the modern age. Throughout this time, however, many movies that could use a modern update continue to be overlooked.

When it comes to remaking a movie, there are several criteria that can be explored to see if a film should get adapted for a younger audience. From a lack of technology at the time the film was made to those types of stories being absent from modern Hollywood, many films have earned a second look. For some of these films, a remake could save a franchise from hitting a wall, while others could make forgotten stories relevant again.

Jack Black's Character In Waterworld Explained
Image
1995’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic Waterworld is mostly remembered for its disappointing commercial performance, but it has a notable early-career supporting turn by Jack Black. With a budget that ballooned to $175 million (via Looper), Waterworld became the most expensive movie ever made at the time of its release. Earning just $264 million at the worldwide box office, Waterworld has gone down in history as one of the biggest flops in Hollywood history. The film was met with mixed reviews, with some critics praising its dystopian futuristic setting and others criticizing the cast’s performances – but Jack Black is sometimes singled out for his brief but memorable appearance.

While Jack Black is known for creating the band Tenacious D with his long-time friend Kyle Gass, he is also and a beloved A-list movie star thanks to his lead roles as Hal Larson in Shallow Hal and Dewey Finn in School of Rock. He...

Grey's Anatomy Really Needs To Bring Back Residents
Image
Grey’s Anatomy season 19 introduced a brand-new class of relatable and intriguing surgical interns, however, it needs to bring back its residents, as they are a vital part of the medical drama. Grey’s Anatomy season 18 had Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital risk the worst by losing the residency program until the hospital’s problems were solved. However, even with it reinstated, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 still hasn’t gotten its residents back. With most of Levi Schmitt’s (Jake Borelli) colleagues either across the country in other hospitals or out of the profession, Grey Sloan Memorial effectively lost all residents except for Schmitt as chief resident and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) as Ob/Gyn resident.

While Grey’s Anatomy started off following the original Magic five at the beginning of their year as surgical residents, throughout its 19 seasons, it evolved to follow them as residents. Even when Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo...

Original Napoleon Dynamite Star Shares His Dark Pitch For A Sequel
Image
Original Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder has revealed his dark pitch for a sequel to the quirky cult classic, nearly 20 years since it was first released in theaters. The idiosyncratic 2004 comedy features a trio of eccentric high school students: Napoleon Dynamite (Heder), an oddball looking to help his friend, Pedro (Efren Ramirez), become class president, and Deb (Tina Majorino), a budding photographer. The film is light-hearted and absurd, which makes Heder's darker idea for a sequel all the more intriguing.

Appearing at Pittsburgh's Steel City Con (via Comicbook), Heder addressed a crowd about his hope for a sequel, which is as yet unconfirmed. Noting Disney's acquisition of Fox, whose purview Napoleon Dynamite fell under, and the recent uptick in franchises and legacy sequels, Heder expressed optimism at the prospect of a sequel nearly 20 years after the original. He even had a pitch in mind, which would see the original cast return,...

The ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ cast is reuniting for an animated series funded by NFTs
Image
Napoleon Dynamite can add blockchain development to his list of skills. Jon Heder, who portrayed the titular character in a 2004 cult classic, is reuniting with three other cast members from the film for a pilot called Cyko Ko. The animated project and its Dynamite cast will be supported by an Nft drop on Replay‘s Rewarded.tv platform.

Cyko Ko is inspired by a graphic novel written by Rob Feldman, who will serve as the showrunner for the animated adaptation. Both Feldman and Heder have previous experience with NFTs. Feldman tested the Web3 waters with a drop called Cyko Headz, and Heder dropped the “Order of the Tigrons” on the Theta blockchain earlier this year.

Heder is now returning to Theta, where Replay has built its proprietary platforms. The young company — which emerged out of stealth earlier this year, doles out tokens to viewers through a “watch-to-earn” model. To support its financial ecosystem,...

‘Waterworld’ Follow-Up TV Series In The Works With Dan Trachtenberg To Direct
Image
A follow-up to Universal’s 1995 movie Waterworld, starring Kevin Costner, is in the works for the small screen. The project, which hails from original producer John Davis and his Davis Entertainment is in very early development at UCP, sources tell Deadline. Davis tells Collider, which first reported the project, that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is attached to direct.

The series would pick up with the film’s characters 20 years later. No platform is attached, but sources close to the project say it could potentially be set at UCP sister streamer Peacock. Talks are currently underway with potential writers.

UCP would not comment.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future ravaged by climate change, the film revolves around a world that is covered in water. The polar ice cap has completely melted and the sea level has risen over 25,000 feet, covering nearly every inch of land. Costner stars as the Mariner, a drifter...

Waterworld Sequel Series Is Happening with 10 Cloverfield Lane Director
Image
Waterworld will continue with a sequel series more than 25 years after the original movie famously bombed in theaters. Producer John Davis, who produced the original alongside Charles Gordon, Larry Gordon, and star Kevin Costner, is on board to help develop a new Waterworld TV series with plans to bring back the original characters. Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) has also been tapped to direct, though it's unclear who will be writing the series.

"We're going to do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie," Davis recently told Collider's Jeff Sneider about the WaterWorld TV show. While he didn't specifically mention if Costner or any other actors from Waterworld would return, Sneider indicated that would be the case by explaining that the series is set "20 years later," featuring "all those people, 20 years later."

Davis' producing partner at Davis Entertainment, John Fox, added: "We're not 100% sure on the approach to the show.

‘Delivered’ Review: Hulu’s ‘Into the Dark’ Slow-Burn Mommy Horror Offering Is for ‘Misery’ Devotees
Image
Pregnancy is already not treating Valerie (Natalie Paul) well by the time she and her doting husband Tom (Michael Cassidy) meet fellow mother-to-be Jenny (Tina Majorino) at a crunchy yoga class (mama-ste!). She’s been ill, had to take a leave of absence from work, and is wholly disinterested in finding out the baby’s gender. Even more worrisome, her phone won’t stop buzzing, and the mix of fear and shame that accompanies every text and call from “Riley” seems to send her down a new rabbit hole. When the peppy Jenny asks her what she’s most looking forward to, Valerie has a litany of ideas: getting her body back, not puking so much, going back to work — oh, and something about the baby, maybe?

Sure, yeah, the baby will be neat, too.

James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
The Top 13 ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Deaths Ranked
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
If there’s anyone that knows how to deliver a heart-wrenching death scene, it’s the team behind ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” Created by Shonda Rhimes, the broadcast medical drama came out of the gate in 2005 with literal life and death stakes for its characters. Being set in a hospital meant that mortality was a constant theme that touched the lives of every one who walked through the doors, be they of-the-week patients or support staff, or full-time cast members — no one is immune to the cold touch of death.

Now showrun by Krista Vernoff, “Grey’s Anatomy” has become the longest-running medical drama on television and, as such, the show has accumulated a record-high body count.

There have been quite a few of memorable ones that caused tears to be shed but not buckets to be cried. Those include Bonnie Crasnoff (Monica Keena), who was admitted after a train crash...
