Ralph Macchio at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
Jackie Chan, Ben Wang, and Ralph Macchio answer questions from IMDb fans about the latest movie in the 'Karate Kid' franchise, their martial-arts skills, favorite Mr. Miyagi moments, that controversial crane kick, and more.

Wang told IMDb he learned his karate skills entirely during production of the upcoming 'Karate Kid' installment, training with instructors in Montreal where the film was shot. The conversation, which included franchise veterans Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, offered new details about the production.

Chan, who returns to the franchise, detailed his extensive martial arts background, describing his decade-long study of Southern style kung fu before branching into multiple disciplines including karate, judo, and hapkido. The action star explained how he incorporates diverse movement styles, including street dancing, into his fight choreography.

Macchio, speaking about the franchise's 40-year-plus legacy, highlighted its multigenerational appeal. "The themes are rooted in positivity and achieving goals and good over evil and dealing with loss and coming out the other end," Macchio said. "In a world that's not always so positive, it's nice to be connected with something that brings a little bit of joy and positivity to all ages."

The latest chapter in the 'Karate Kid' saga, which unites Chan and Macchio on screen for the first time, continues the franchise's exploration of martial arts and mentorship when the film premieres on Friday, May 30.

Ralph George Macchio was born on November 4, 1961 in Huntington, Long Island, New York. He started out in various TV commercials in the late 1970s before appearing in the puerile comedy movie Up the Academy (1980), then a regular role in 1980 on the television series Huit, ça suffit (1977) followed by a decent performance as teenager Johhny Cade in the Outsiders (1983) based on the popular S.E. Hinton novel about troubled youth.

In 1984, Macchio scored the lead role in Karate Kid (1984) directed by John G. Avildsen. The film was a phenomenal success, being highly popular with adults and children alike. The movie spawned two equally popular sequels Karate Kid II (1986) and Karate Kid III (1989), both again starring Macchio and Pat Morita, and both directed by Avildsen.

Macchio also starred in the blues road movie Crossroads (1986), featured alongside Joe Pesci in Mon cousin Vinny (1992) and, looking to toughen up his image, Macchio played a hit man in A Good Night to Die (2003). Arguably, movie audiences still identify Macchio very strongly with his Karate Kid role, but as his features have gained a more weathered, adult edge, he has found opportunities and positive reviews from appearances in stage productions showcasing his acting talent. It would be great to see this versatile actor score some broader and more challenging film roles.
