Here at JoBlo, we love the eighties. Heck, we even have a Facebook page and a YouTube channel called Loving the 80s— that’s how much we’re obsessed with the decade. However, when you think about all your favorite eighties movies, I’m willing to bet that for the majority of them, there’s a song that immediately comes to mind. That’s because the 80s were the heyday of movie soundtracks. Nowadays, movies just don’t have super popular songs associated with them the way they used to (which is why the Best Original Song category at the Oscars is so horrendous). It’s a shame, because there...

Joel Sill, a music supervisor for more than 150 movies, including such cinema classics as Easy Rider, Flashdance, Forrest Gump and An Officer and a Gentleman, passed away Aug. 23 at his home in Thousand Oaks after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was 78.
Born in Santa Monica in 1946 to a musical family, Sill spent time as a teenager observing a young Phil Spector, who had been signed as a songwriter by Sill’s father, Lester Sill, as he was starting to build his career.
In 1967, after graduating from UCLA, Sill started work at Big-Three Music Publishing and eventually migrated to Dunhill Records where he produced the soundtrack for the 1969 film Easy Rider.
In his first professional milestone, Sill, then 24, was tasked with selecting the music for Dennis Hopper’s movie starring Peter Fonda at a time when the role of the music supervisor was not well established.

Erotic thrillers used to be big business. Explorers of late-night cable TV in the late '80s and throughout the '90s likely recall the cavalcade of nudity-infused neo-noirs that filled entire blocks of programming. Many of them starred Shannon Tweed. Because sex and sexuality hadn't yet been moved to the internet, erotic thrillers were vital for a generation exploring adult themes and sexual ideas, even if they were always presented as prurient. Erotic thrillers also proved to be big hits in Hollywood. Adrian Lyne made "9½ Weeks" in 1986 and "Fatal Attraction" in 1987, each of them enormous financial successes. Paul Verhoeven kicked the doors open wide with "Basic Instinct" in 1992, a film that made $353 million on a $49 million budget. Sex became a commercial powerhouse.
In 1993, Paramount continued the trend with "Indecent Proposal," also a Lyne film, which dealt with the intersection of money and infidelity. In the film, Demi Moore...

The old adage tells us that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Director John Polson adds age to this equation, asking if anything can be scarier than a teenage girl in love. His 2002 erotic thriller Swimfan places Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction within the walls of a modern high school and asks us to sympathize with a reckless young man.

Gordon Gekko has (mostly) left the building. Michael Douglas made headlines over the weekend when he announced the he would be stepping back from acting during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
"I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop," said the veteran actor and producer, who last appeared onscreen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. "I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back."
At the same time, Douglas acknowledged that — just like Sean Connery — he's going to be careful about never saying never again. "I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no."

Jerry Bruckheimer, start your engines. The veteran producer's latest summer spectacle, F1: The Movie, races into theaters on Friday and is already expected to top the weekend box office courtesy of Brad Pitt's star power and the global popularity of the Formula 1 racing circuit.
Based on advanced looks, F1 also has the right stuff to appeal to Oscar voters — much like Bruckheimer's previous collaboration with director Joseph Kosinski, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. That legacy sequel received six nominations, including Best Picture. That also happened to be Bruckheimer's first nod in a five-decade career.
"We got recognized for a terrific film and thanks to Tom Cruise, I'm here," the producer said at the time, adding: "I've been doing it for so long and haven't had the accolades from my peers. ... I finally got that which is kind of a completion for making movies for all these years."

A promise made beneath cathedral oaks turns into a descent into terror in Bury Me When I’m Dead, which arrives on digital and VOD this 18 July. Writer-director Seabold Krebs delivers a gothic-tinged ghost story that fuses domestic tragedy with supernatural horror as Devon Terrell’s Henry struggles to honour his wife’s dying wish and unearths consequences darker than he could imagine.
When Catherine (Charlotte Hope) is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, the couple retreats to her childhood estate. Henry swears to lay her to rest in a remote woodland clearing, but a secret liaison with their friend Rebecca (Makenzie Leigh) has him riven with guilt. Following Catherine’s sudden death, Henry abandons his vow, returning her body to the city under threat from her formidable father Gary. That final betrayal unleashes a sequence of increasingly disturbing events, leading him to suspect that Catherine has risen from the grave to exact revenge.

Hollywood is a strange place and sometimes actors can work with each other and know each other for years. Or in Demi Mooreand Billy Bob Thornton's case, Moore can forget that she'd known Thornton for a while when the two started working on the Paramount+ series Landmantogether. The new Taylor Sheridanseries puts us in Texas when a billionaire named Tommy Norris (Thornton) is trying to race against the other tycoons to get rich from the oil found there. Moore plays Cami Miller, and a good amount of her scenes are opposite star Jon Hamm, but she has worked with Thornton in the past.
But according to Moore at a recent FYC event for the series, she had to be reminded of knowing Thornton. Not only did Thornton work with Moore's ex-husband, Bruce Willis, on movies like Armageddonand The Astronaut Farmer, but he was in a film with Moore before...

Oscar-winning actor and producer Michael Douglas helped kick off the Taormina Film Festival here in Sicily, speaking candidly during a press conference ahead of accepting a Lifetime Achievement award on opening night.
A longtime activist, Douglas was spurred on to advocate for nuclear disarmament by his involvement in 1979’s China Syndrome. While he was in Taormina on Tuesday to reflect on his career and celebrate the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a question inevitably was posed to him about the state of the world today amid ongoing global conflicts.
Said Douglas, “Since this is a film festival and since it’s very difficult to spend five minutes not mentioning ‘the big T,’ I prefer not to get into this.” However, he continued, “I was born at the end of World War II, but in my lifetime, this is the worst time that I can ever remember.

Ana de Armas has been in a lot of spectacular pieces throughout her star-studded career, but there have also been some that just failed to fare well with audiences worldwide. While she is currently riding high on the tides of fame gifted to her by her recently released masterpiece Ballerina, some of her past projects seem to have wasted her true talent.
One of these very flicks includes her 2022 thriller mystery with Ben Affleck that brutally disappointed fans and critics alike: Deep Water. In fact, what makes that piece even more disappointing is the fact that the same filmmaker who tamed that movie also made a similar Kim Basinger flick that the Armas starrer couldn’t live up to: 9 1/2 Weeks.

It’s the rare pop star who doesn’t use his or her sexuality in some way. But the current moment, typified by stars like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli xcx, tends to be about showcasing one’s sexuality ironically, or with an acid flippancy, or from behind a mask, or with a certain cool stance of meta control.

Natalie Portman has spoken in detail about the impact of being sexualized as a young performer, describing her early years in the film industry as defined by what she called a “long Lolita phase.” Speaking with Jenna Ortega in a feature for Interview magazine, Portman reflected on the image projected onto her following her debut in Léon: The Professional, filmed when she was just 12.
“There’s a public understanding of me that’s different from who I am,” Portman said. “I’ve talked about it a little before — about how, as a kid, I was really sexualized, which I think happens to a lot of young girls who are onscreen. I felt very scared by it. Obviously sexuality is a huge part of being a kid, but I wanted it to be inside of me, not directed towards me.”
She described building a persona to protect herself from attention she didn’t want.

After making her onscreen debut at 11, Natalie Portman quickly learned to separate herself from her public image.
The Oscar winner recently opened up about being subjected to “a long Lolita phase” when she was “really sexualized” as a child actor, making her debut performance in Luc Besson’s Léon: The Professional.
“I think there’s a public understanding of me that’s different from who I am,” she told Jenna Ortega for Interview. “I’ve talked about it a little before—about how, as a kid, I was really sexualized, which I think happens to a lot of young girls who are onscreen. A number of dead bodies turn up in 1998’s Wild Things: Sam, Kelly, Ray, that random dude floating in the river…Wait, what? As it turns out, the deaths weren’t just happening on screen but also near the set, as the crew soon found out that sometimes people are exactly what they appear to be…

Kim Basinger has been a part of numerous marvelous projects over the years, all of which have significantly impacted her acting career in making her more and more renowned in Hollywood’s entertainment industry.
But one of these projects really had the actress going through hell, which was also her riskiest movie to date, where she starred opposite Mickey Rourke. This one project was 1986’s erotic-romance flick 9½ Weeks, which was more or less the 1980s version of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Kim Basinger really had to go through hell while shooting 9½ Weeks

In a new edition of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha rexamines Mahesh Bhatt-Anurag Basu’s drama Murder, which released in 2004.
On a wet, windy morning in Bangkok, the forlorn Indian housewife Simran (Mallika Sherawat) in a clinging blue chiffon sari waves frantically for a taxi, drops her shopping bags in the wet chaos and comes face to face with a sensuous silhouette. “Come to my apartment for a cuppa,” the smirking stranger tells the housewife. Face mirroring a repressed sexuality and challenged values, she refuses and then changes her mind…to plunge into a lustful liaison that brings her well-ordered life to a crashing crescendo…
Welcome to the second remake of Adrian Lyne’s Unfaithful in a week. With a far better cast, production values, and music score than last week’s Hawas, Murder kills your murderous murmurs about exploitative adaptations in the bud.

Glenn Close at the Oscars, awaiting on the verdict yet again
Welcome back to the boiling and bloody finale of our three-part retrospective of Adrian Lyne's classic thriller Fatal Attraction (1987). In part 1, Husband and father Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas in his best performance of 1987 -- sorry Wall Street) stumbled out of the pouring rain and straight into an even wetter two-night stand with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close in her most iconic role). Things start hot but end bloody with a suicide attempt. In part 2, Dan clings hard to his wife Beth and his daughter Ellen, desperate for normalcy again. He eagerly grants them their dream gifts: a new home in the suburbs and a pet bunny rabbit, respectively. As we return to the film, Beth and Ellen are still oblivious to the family's pregnant stalker.
One more thing: I realize this retrospective would have been less...

The Twilight Zone remains one of the most groundbreaking pieces of television ever made. Rod Serling's supernatural anthology series delivered dozens of classic episodes, cloaking moral lessons in clever twist endings, and ranging from the hilarious to the utterly terrifying. It lasted five seasons and was minted a masterpiece almost before it was off the air. In retrospect, it bowed out just in time, with its creative well running dry by Serling's own admission. It thus avoided jumping the shark, and several direct reboots have only fitfully found the magic that it delivered consistently from beginning to end.
The Twilight Zone famously received a little help from an outside source. "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a supernatural anti-war movie which French filmmaker Robert Enrico shot in 1961, and appeared as an episode late in Season 5 as The Twilight Zone was wrapping up. It remains the only episode to come from an outside source,...

“They want crap,” Carolco executive Peter Hoffman once told the Los Angeles Times, “Every time people tell you they don’t, it’s bull. They want crap.” Hoffman was reflecting on the lackluster audience response to the Oscar-nominated Music Box (1989), while sci-fi action blockbusters such as Total Recall (1990) were filling coffers like mad.
Long before independent production houses like Skydance, A24, and Blumhouse were making waves alongside the major studios, Carolco made its name in Hollywood as a backer of lavish action films that included the Rambo series, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Cliffhanger (1993). Carolco’s rise and fall was as epic as one of their blockbuster action films.
It was known as “The Carolco Premium.” While rival indies TriStar and Orion had their share of respectable projects, Carolco led a rise of independent studios by creating and maintaining a blockbuster brand for making the most extravagant actions films of the era.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights is set against the backdrop of the sex industry. New Line’s marketing team had to find a way to sell it.
It was back in October 1997 that the American Film Information Council bestowed upon the movie Boogie Nights the prize of the best marketed film of that month.
Appreciating that it’s a fairly closed shortlist it’ll have been competing against, it was still up against Kiss The Girls, I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Devil’s Advocate. Even so, it was still likely to have been something of a split decision. Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie was treading a fine line between the old adage of sex sells, and American censors grappling with material of a fruity nature.

Kevin Bacon has been plugging away in movies since making his big-screen debut in 1978's highly problematic comedy classic "National Lampoon's Animal House," and has been in so many different kinds of films over the last 47 years that there's a trivia game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, that essentially holds him as the center of the cinema universe. While you can't make as many movies as Bacon has without appearing in more than a few stinkers, I don't think I've ever seen the man give a poor performance. He's been believable as heroes, villains, creeps and milquetoasts, and, despite getting cast in numerous Oscar contenders, has never competed for an Academy Award himself. That's gotta change.
The only bad thing I can say about his most recent project, "The Bondsman," is that it won't get him off the Oscar schneid. That's because it's a streaming horror series for Amazon Prime...

Hollywood wasn’t always big on boundaries, and one Marvel star took things way too far. Back in the day, Kim Basinger found herself in a scene that went off-script, and not in a good way. The incident left her physically scarred and shook her to the core.

Kim Basinger is sharing her thoughts on intimacy coordinators.
In a new interview, the 71-year-old Oscar-winning actress said that she would not have wanted an intimacy coordinator on set while filming the steamy scenes with co-star Mickey Rourke in their 1986 movie 9 1/2 Weeks.
Keep reading to find out more…“I can’t imagine having somebody come up to me and say, ‘Do you mind if they put their hand here?’” Kim told Variety. “That’s just another person in the room. Either we work it out or we don’t. I don’t see all of this need for supervised visits.”
Kim went on to say that movie from director Adrian Lyne earned her a lot of loyal fans.
“It’s a very hard thing to shoot a beautiful love scene,” Kim explained. “You think it’s just lay down with a bunch of baby oil. It’s not.

Hollywood legend Kim Basinger has played every kind of character during her decade-long career. She's been the love interest of Batman, an unofficial Bond girl, and a Bdsm enthusiast, among many others. And while the actress has appeared as some sensual and provocative roles over her long career, she has a controversial view on the need for intimacy coordinators on movie sets.
The actor of films like Batman, 8 Mile, 9½ Weeks and L.A. Confidential, which earned her an Academy Award in 1998, opened up to Variety during a rare interview in which she spoke about her various roles. Basinger spoke about the experience of shooting 9½ Weeks, the steamy 1986 romantic drama co-starring Mickey Rourke where she plays a New York City girl who commits to a Bdsm-style relationship with another New Yorker. Think of an 80s version of Fifty Shades of Grey that didn't evolve from Twilight fan fiction.

Hollywood is an industry where art and reality can often have blurred lines, but there are few films that have been accused of pushing the boundaries too much, and one of them is 9 ½ Weeks. The 1986 erotic drama starred Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke and became one of the most controversial films of its time.

Kim Basinger “can’t imagine” what it’s like to work with an intimacy coordinator, despite the practice becoming a new industry norm.
Basinger, whose most recent onscreen role was in the 2017 film “Fifty Shades Darker,” told Variety that she doesn’t understand why intimacy coordinators are used on sets.
“I can’t imagine having somebody come up to me and say, ‘Do you mind if they put their hand here?’” Basinger said. “That’s just another person in the room. Either we work it out or we don’t. I don’t see all of this need for supervised visits.”
She continued, “It’s a very hard thing to shoot a beautiful love scene. You think it’s just lay[ing] down with a bunch of baby oil. It’s not. It can really work your nerves.”
Basinger noted that her own attitude toward sex onscreen is “more European” than “stuffy” American views.

Hollywood is jam-packed with stories of on-set feuds. While some of them are very true (George Clooney still despises David O. Russell), others get exaggerated over time, or simply turn out not to have any basis in reality whatsoever. One famous Hollywood feud that’s turned out to be nothing more than gossip was the rumoured discord between stars Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke on the set of 9 1/2 Weeks, which was directed by Adrian Lyne.
In a recent, lengthy interview about her career with Variety, Basinger set the record straight, with her saying the rumor is likely due to the fact that neither of them spoke on-set outside of filming. As per Basinger, this was at her request, as it was something she needed in order to get into the character. She says the scene where she meets him for the first time in the grocery store is...

Ben Affleck’s Hollywood career is a fascinating case study in terms of its erratic rise and fall over nearly 3 decades. Since his Oscar-winning debut in Good Will Hunting, Affleck has been a golden property for the industry despite his intermittent stretches of bad moviemaking choices mingling with the good.

The success of Good Will Hunting and Chasing Amy was followed by a drastic downfall due to Gigli and Daredevil. This, in turn, was once again turned into a success with Gone Baby Gone, Argo, The Town, and Gone Girl before Affleck’s career fell into a rut with Batman v Superman and Live by Night.
However, the 2010 film, The Town almost turned one of Affleck’s stretches of success into a bad call for all the actors involved.

Shark action specialist Renny Harlin is back this year with Deep Water, starring Aaron Eckhart. It now has a distributor in the US, and set for release in 2025.

The disaster thriller sees Harlin return to the realm of sharks, having previously directed the batty cult favourite Deep Blue Sea in 1999. Not all Stephen King fans might be aware of the backstory to Stand by Me, the adaptation of his novella The Body, which was part of his 1982 collection Different Seasons. Perhaps some casual movie fans might not even know this film was based on his story. Many of Stephen King’s books have been adapted for the screen, and while he liked most of them, Stand by Me stood out as one of the author’s favorites alongside Shawshank Redemption. King has repeatedly spoken about the emotional impact in several interviews, stating that it was very much a personal story. In fact, it was so deeply personal that when he saw the finished film, he was overwhelmed with emotion and needed a few minutes to gather his thoughts.

Sure, Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson might be steaming it up now with Babygirl, but if you’re looking for a little throwback that’s part psychological, part erotic thriller, look no further than Paramount+, as Fatal Attraction is now streaming. The year was 1987, Michael Douglas was a silver fox and Glenn Close’s shoulder pads exuded enough sensuality to cause a car crash. It was then that filmmaker Adrian Lyne decided the world needed a little more raw eroticism and picked up James Dearden’s feature-length adaptation of his 1980 short, Diversion. What came to follow is one of the most intensely acted, sexually charged, psychological thrillers in cinematic history. Intrigued? You should be.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the year’s most talked-about movies continues with the Venice Film Festival-premiering Babygirl, A24’s erotic thriller from writer-director Halina Reijn that stars Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson. It hit theaters December 20.
In Venice, Kidman won the Best Actress prize for playing Romy, a high-powered CEO whose life is controlled by structure, tight scheduling and an all-too-keen awareness of how she’s perceived at the heights of a male-dominated field. The one thing she cannot control is her sexual urges that haven’t been fulfilled after 19 years of marriage to her husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas).
Romy, trapped in her suppressed desires, is quickly undone after she meets Samuel (Dickinson), an intern at her company who transgresses professional boundaries. This dynamic inadvertently fosters a dominant/submissive power play, providing Romy with an unexpected outlet to explore and indulge her kinks.

Quick Links Diane Lane Gives the Performance of a Lifetime in 'Unfaithful' 'Unfaithful' Powerfully Showcases How an Affair Can Destroy a Marriage
Halina Reijn's Babygirl represents an erotic thriller that explores the balance of power and sexuality as a professional high-ranking CEO, portrayed by Nicole Kidman, engages in a forbidden affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The director has said that some of her inspiration for the film was the psychosexual thrillers of the '80s and '90s from directors like Paul Verhoeven and Adrian Lyne.
It's fitting then that after a trip to see Babygirl, moviegoers should revisit Lyne's 2002 erotic thriller, Unfaithful. While the director is known more for his Oscar-nominated hits Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, Unfaithful's simplicity, as it explores a woman's need for the excitement that she seems to be missing, is its biggest strength.

I’ve been seeing variations on the question above on comment boards and social media, and the answer is inevitably a resounding “No. Fucking. Way.” But let’s be clear about what the question really is, since it’s actually two questions at once. The fundamental thing that’s being asked is: Could “Babygirl,” an enthralling high-kink corporate drama, in which Nicole Kidman plays a girlboss who secretly yearns to be dominated and debased, and plays this all out with one of her young male interns…could a male director have gotten away with making that movie today? The answer everyone seems to agree on, with an underlying note of look-how-far-we’ve-come cultural pride, is no. I don’t necessarily disagree — though actually, in a way, I sort of do.
“Babygirl,” written and directed by the volcanically talented Dutch filmmaker Halina Reijn, is a gripping movie about a woman who...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. A24 releases “Babygirl” in theaters December 25.
The worst thing your partner could possibly say to you after sex, after you’ve said “I love you,” is the dreaded “love you.” No “I.” And that’s not the most demoralizing response Romy (Nicole Kidman) has for an amorous confession by her husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas) in “Babygirl,” writer/director Halina Reijn’s provocative erotic dramedy that begins and ends with an orgasm. One of them is faked, but in between, this perversely funny and absorbing new film explores the pleasure gap between men and women, and how our inability to talk about sex limits our ability to just do it.
And there’s lots of sex here, with Kidman going raw inside and out for one of her top performances in a career built on risk-taking. That’s...

Movies have been absolutely peerless when it comes to giving the world a chance to gaze at desirable females. What the seventh art has been notoriously bad at is exploring the concept of female desire, in all of its complexities and clandestine, dark-corner complications. This is where Babygirl comes in. An exploration of a charged sexual relationship between a female CEO and her young, male intern that ends up finding freedom in sub-dom dynamics, this drama from Dutch filmmaker Halina Reijns leans heavily into the power structures inherent in such December-May affairs.

Glen Powell seems to be at the height of his Hollywood career. It all started last December when he became a hit star after featuring in the sensational rom-com Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney.
He followed that star power with his next romantic thriller, Hit Man, which he co-wrote and produced. The movie has now earned him his first Golden Globes nomination.
