It's alive! It's alive… again! Well, almost. A new comedy series inspired by Mel Brooks' iconic comedy film Young Frankenstein is reportedly nearing a pilot order at FX. Amid the Spaceballs sequel starting production, another beloved Mel Brooks movie is being revisited. As with Spaceballs 2, Brooks himself will also be back on board for the new project.
Per Deadline, FX has put into development a new TV series inspired by Brooks' 1974 movie Young Frankenstein. The new series, dubbed Very Young Frankenstein, will have Brooks back on board to serve as an executive producer alongside producing partner Kevin Salter. Three What We Do in the Shadows alums are also serving as EPs, including Stefanie Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch. Robinson will serve as series showrunner. Original producer Michael Gruskoff is also an EP.
Not much else is known about Very Young Frankenstein, but it's expected to be similar to the original film. The movie, notably, served as a spoof of classic monster movies, particularly the black-and-white Frankenstein films of the 1930s. Gene Wilder starred as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein,...

“It’s pronounced Fronkensteen!” A comedy series based on the Mel Brooks classic 1974 film Young Frankenstein, titled “Very Young Frankenstein,” is nearing a pilot order from FX, Deadline reports today.
While Brooks himself is said to have given the series his blessing and will executive produce, it’s the talent attached that also has our attention.
The new series hails from a trio of creative minds behind FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows“: Stefani Robinson, the writer and showrunner for the new series; Taika Waititi, attached to direct the pilot; and Garrett Basch. All three will executive produce alongside Mel Brooks.
Amusingly, the plot description gives absolutely nothing away. “Inspired by Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein. Previously, on What We Do in the Shadows, Colin Robinson, a main character in the series, was turned into a baby who had to grow up all over again. Whether or...

It's alive! According to Deadline, another of Mel Brooks's comedy classics is being zapped back to life in a way nobody saw coming. FX is nearing a pilot order for a new series based on 1974's Young Frankenstein, which will come from a trio behind another macabre satire series — What We Do in the Shadows. If the deal is finalized and a series is ordered, Stefani Robinson will serve as writer and showrunner, with Taika Waititi directing the pilot, and Garrett Basch also attached. All three will serve as executive producers alongside Brooks, who has given the project his blessing.
Robinson, Waititi, and Basch's project will go under the name Very Young Frankenstein, though further details of the reimagining are currently under wraps outside the fact that it will be inspired by Brook's classic horror parody. We do know, however, that it will feature several of Brooks's collaborators working on the production.

As a reminder, it’s pronounced “Fronk-en-steen.”
FX is developing a comedy titled Very Young Frankenstein, inspired by Mel Brooks’ 1974 comedy classic Young Frankenstein. Brooks is among the project’s executive producers along with producing partner Kevin Salter and three alumni of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows — Stefani Robinson (who will serve as showrunner should the project move forward), Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch. Disney’s 20th Television is the studio (forerunner 20th Century Fox released the film). Michael Gruskoff, who produced the film, is also an EP.
FX and 20th TV declined comment.
Young Frankenstein was a parody of/homage to classic monster movies, the 1930s Frankenstein films in particular. The cast includes Gene Wilder, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Kenneth Mars, Teri Garr and Peter Boyle, who played the monster.

A television series based on a beloved Mel Brooks movie is close to a pilot order at FX. Brooks recently made headlines when the cast of Spaceballs 2 was confirmed to feature him reprising the role of Yogurt, a character who parodies Yoda in the original Spaceballs movie released in 1987.
Brooks is also producing the sequel, which will see Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga reprising their previous roles, while Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Josh Gad play new characters. Spaceballs is only one of many hilarious Mel Brooks movies, with others including Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, and History of the World, Part I.

Another Adam Sandler sports comedy is heading to Hulu. Following Happy Gilmore's addition to the streamer's library earlier this month, The Longest Yard will make its way onto the platform at the top of next month.
Beginning July 1, The Longest Yard will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2005, the Peter Segal-directed sports comedy stars Sandler as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a washed-up former professional football quarterback who goes to prison and is forced to assemble a team to play against the guards. The movie was a remake of the 1974 movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, who appears in the new version as Nate Scarborough, a former college football star who agrees to coach the prisoners' team. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, William Fichtner, David Patrick Kelly, Tracy Morgan, and Cloris Leachman also appear in supporting roles.
The Longest Yard was a commercial success, grossing $191.5 million worldwide off an $82 million budget.

Zombies have been a thing in cinema for nearly a century now, and since then, we have seen countless films that employ the flesh-eating monsters to tell various kinds of stories. In this sub-genre, we have seen many high and low budget films from the incredibly popular World War Z to the brilliant 28 Days Later, and while these films are every bit worthy of the praise they get, there are some films that get nearly no praise, as the masses still haven’t heard about them. To rectify that, we have compiled a list of the best and most entertaining zombie films that you might not have heard of.

The Studio is overflowing with A-list guest stars, most of whom play versions of themselves, but it's someone who isn't doing that who's out in front for Emmy gold.
Bryan Cranston is in first place in Gold Derby's early Best Comedy Guest Actor odds. The six-time Emmy winner plays Continental CEO Griffin Mill and is one of The Studio's few guest stars to portray fictional characters. After appearing in the pilot, Griffin returns with a vengeance in the final two episodes of the first season, taking so many shrooms that he goes Mia and puts the studio's CinemaCon presentation in jeopardy.
If he prevails, this would be Cranston's fifth Emmy for acting — he has four Best Drama Actor trophies for Breaking Bad and two for producing the two-time Best Drama Series champ — putting him one step closer to the all-time acting record of eight wins, held by Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

NBC's classic Western show "Little House on the Prairie" was filmed from 1974 to 1983. During this time, the story of the Ingalls family and their family-friendly toil and trouble won four Emmys and numerous other awards -- as well as the hearts of the viewers. An Emmy favorite has made a category decision that could have a huge impact on this year's awards. Gold Derby has exclusively learned that Allison Janney will submit as Best Drama Supporting Actress for the second season of The Diplomat. She is already a seven-time winner in acting categories at the Primetime Emmys, so an eighth win would tie her for the record with TV Hall of Fame inductees Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Studios and campaigners have until May 8 to finalize their 2025 Emmys submissions, and this year in particular, there seems to be more behind-the-scenes strategizing (and last-minute second-guessing) than ever before. As fans celebrated the film mastery of the late Gene Hackman over the past week, some pondered the sliding-door moment that could have changed his acting career forever. After all, if sitcom producer Sherwood Schwartz had his way, the unknown Broadway actor would have been cast as Mike Brady, patriarch of The Brady Bunch.
Hackman was Schwartz’s first choice for the role, but ABC executives rejected the idea. Who had heard of Gene Hackman? They wanted someone with more experience like Robert Reed, who TV viewers knew well from several seasons starring in ‘60s legal drama The Defenders. Hackman, on the other hand, only had one-shot appearances on shows like I Spy, The FBI and Route 66. Ironically, he also guested twice on The Defenders.
Lucky for everyone, Hackman didn’t get the part, clearing the way for an Academy Award just a couple of years later for The French Connection.

Everyone knows sliced bread is the best thing to happen since Betty White. The iconic television star gained massive acclaim and fame with her role in The Golden Girls, and she filled her later acting career with countless cameos. Her inimitable presence brought immense charm and humor to any show.
One such cameo happened in 2004 when she appeared in Malcolm in the Middle. As expected from Betty White, the character oozes a mix of passion, wit, and talent. She shines brighter than everyone whenever she appears, and her appeal is as much her star power as her talent. To be more precise, Betty White pops up as Sylvia in the twentieth episode of Season 5, “Victor’s Other Family.” The episode debuted on May 9, 2004, and marked the series’ 105th entry.

To be more precise, Betty White pops up as Sylvia in the twentieth episode of Season 5, “Victor’s Other Family.” The episode debuted on May 9, 2004, and marked the series’ 105th entry.

The tributes continue to pour in following the shocking death of Academy Award winner Gene Hackman. While the actor was well-known for his intense, often terrifying performances in the likes of Unforgiven and The French Connection, he was not averse to providing the laughs too, starring in seminal director Mel Brooks’ beloved 1974 horror comedy Young Frankenstein.
Brooks has now paid tribute to the actor, taking to X/Twitter to reflect on their time working together, describing Hackman as “perfect” for the role of the blind hermit, Harold.
“I was privileged to know Gene Hackman because he played tennis with another Gene—Gene Wilder. And that Gene told him about a little role called The Blind Hermit in our movie Young Frankenstein. He said, “Do you think Mel would let me play it? I’ve always wanted to do a comedy.” Needless to say, I was over the moon and he was perfect.

Although Gene Hackman‘s legacy includes a myriad of masterful dramatic performances, he also managed to elicit some laughs during his storied career.
Following the 2x Oscar winner’s death at age 95, writer-director Mel Brooks reminisced about working with Hackman on his Academy Award-nominated 1974 comedy classic Young Frankenstein.

John Lawlor, an actor who had made a string of guest shots on various mid-’70s TV series before landing a regular role in 1976 on Cloris Leachman’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show spin-off Phyllis on CBS and just more than a decade later played Headmaster Bradley on NBC’s popular sitcom The Facts of Life, died February 13 at a veterans’ hospice facility in Albuquerque. John Lawlor, who portrayed one of Cloris Leachman’s co-workers on the CBS sitcom Phyllis and the Eastland School for Girls headmaster on the first season of the NBC comedy The Facts of Life, has died. He was 83.
Lawlor died Feb. 13 at a veterans’ hospice facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, his family announced.
His 60-plus years as an actor also included turns in such films as Blake Edwards’ S.O.B. (1981) and Lawrence Kasdan’s Wyatt Earp (1994).
Lawlor played the inept Leonard Marsh, who works with Leachman’s Phyllis Lindstrom in the San Francisco City Supervisor’s office, on the second and last season (1976-77) of Phyllis, one of the many Mary Tyler Moore Show spinoffs. (He had portrayed a cop on a first-season episode.)

To the surprise of many—except those who follow awards season closely, of course—Best Supporting Actress is one of the most exciting categories at any given Oscar ceremony. The category has provided some of the Academy's all-time best winners, from the heartbreaking Cloris Leachman in The Last Picture Show to the irreverent Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny to the terrifying Mo'Nique in Precious. Indeed, few categories are as consistently exciting or unexpected as Best Supporting Actress, to the point where it feels the Oscars see it as the one chance they get to actually have fun with their pick.

Everyone loves a good family sitcom, right? A feel-good premise, likable characters, and strong humor to balance it all out. Arguably, the biggest family comedy on TV today is Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. That makes sense, as it's set in the immensely popular Big Bang Theory-universe. But if you're looking for a more underrated family comedy to binge, put this early 2010s Fox sitcom on your radar.
Raising Hope ran for four seasons on Fox from 2010 to 2014. It followed a young, single father trying his best to raise his baby daughter with the help of his family. The Chance family was your average lower middle class bunch just trying their best to get by in day-to-day life. Are they the most stable group of characters? Well, not exactly. The 1970s was a decade of legendary sitcoms, dominated by true powerhouse comedies like All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But in the shadows of these television titans, there are some truly hilarious sitcoms that have sadly faded from the cultural consciousness.
The decade saw television writers push the boundaries of the sitcom format. For many shows, this meant telling stories that explicitly addressed racism, sexism, and other topics that were considered sensitive in America's turbulent political landscape. Still, other writers explored the nature of the sitcom itself as prime time began to see series centered on increasingly bizarre circumstances that embraces offbeat humor.

Adam Sandler is a comedic heavy hitter in the industry. His prolific career in the 1990s and 2000s saw him starring in so many movies that some gems inevitably slipped through the cracks of mainstream popularity. But the times are a-changin’ and, thanks to the rise of streaming services, a whole new generation gets to witness Sandler at his best. Spanglish, a rom-com from 2004, is the latest to join the lineup, arriving on Netflix on Feb. 1.
Spanglish tells the story of Flor (Paz Vega), a Mexican immigrant and devoted single mother who does not speak English. She takes a job as a housekeeper for the affluent Clasky family, which consists of John, a Los Angeles chef and the family patriarch, Deborah, his wife and former businesswoman, their children Bernice and Georgie, and Deborah’s mother, Evelyn, a retired singer. The Office had a ton of great one-off characters across its nine seasons, but one of the absolute funniest characters only appeared on the show for a grand total of 20 seconds. Some of The Office’s funniest characters only appeared in one episode. Rob Riggle made a big impression as Captain Jack when Michael took his staff on a booze cruise. Jack Black, Jessica Alba, and Cloris Leachman all starred in a fake in-universe movie that Andy pirated to watch with Jim and Pam.
Evan Peters had a hilarious role as Michael’s nephew Luke in an episode exploring nepotism. Tim Meadows had a hilarious role as an important client named Christian when Michael and Jan tried to land his account at a local Chili’s. But these one-off characters usually got a major role in the episodes they appeared in, which allowed them to leave a lasting impression. One...

For my money, there's one easy answer to the question of the best television show of all time: it's "The Twilight Zone," obviously. Rod Serling's influential series, which originally premiered in 1959, offers something for everybody. There are scary episodes and thought-provoking ones, episodes with aliens and episodes with murder, and episodes that fall into the Western genre, science fiction, horror, and even comedy. That iconic theme music gives everything an air of the surreal, letting us know that we're watching a show where just about anything can happen.
Serling didn't like that the show reran in syndication, but that's part of what made it so enduring. From SyFy marathons to the series' ubiquity on various streaming services, audiences have been discovering "The Twilight Zone" for decades, sinking into its impressive back catalog in an effort to be scared, spooked, or simply entertained.

The 1980s was truly an era of world-class sitcoms, but many of the decade's brightest series have faded from our cultural memory. While iconic shows like The Golden Girls and Cheers undoubtedly made television history, they're part of a larger wave of comedies that helped propel the sitcom format into new territory.
For decades, sitcoms like I Love Lucy, Good Times, and The Brady Bunch centered on the concept of family. There were some exceptions, but these shows, like Dream of Jeannie or Gilligan's Island, were often built around a gimmick. The 80s changed that, opening windows to a plethora of different environments. The sitcoms of the era explored the relationships between coworkers, neighbors, and friends. On top of this, they eschewed flashy premises, putting faith in sharp writing and well-rounded characters.

While many children of famous actors follow their parents into the profession, it is pretty rare that the child equals or surpasses the achievements of their parent. A few names come to mind: Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie. And Jeff Bridges definitely belongs on that list.
His father was the highly successful actor Lloyd Bridges, who appeared in over 100 films and starred in multiple TV series including the popular “Sea Hunt.” Jeff’s brother is the Emmy Award-winning actor Beau Bridges.
Jeff’s career had an auspicious start when he earned an Oscar nomination at age 22 for his second film “The Last Picture Show.” Still regarded as a classic, the film featured an all-star cast of experienced performers and introduced a bunch of new young actors such as Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms, Sam Bottoms and Bridges.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus began her career in comedy, as so many comedians do, with the Second City, the stalwart and long-lived comedy troupe based in Chicago. She was only 21, but Louis-Dreyfus gave such an impressive performance at a Second City event that she was immediately asked to join the cast of "Saturday Night Live." It seems that NBC talent scouts lurk at Second City performances all the time. She starred on "SNL" from 1982 until 1985, becoming friends with writer Larry David during her tenure. A few years later, David and comedian Jerry Seinfeld created the sitcom "Seinfeld," wherein Louis-Dreyfus starred as Jerry's friend Elaine.
"Seinfeld," once might recall, was something of a hit, lasting 180 episodes over nine seasons. Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for seven Emmys, winning one. She would go on to win another Emmy for her performance in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and an additional nine Emmys for "Veep," eight of them for acting.

Although most of today's viewing audiences weren't watching 1960s television live, it speaks to the quality and relatability of shows from that decade that many of its shows are cemented in popular culture. If they're not being rerun on cable or made available on several different streaming apps, they're being transformed for modern viewers with feature-length homages, for better or worse.
From spy dramas and family sitcoms to science fiction adventures and dark gothic soap operas, the 1960s had a little something for everyone. When we look back on the decade's television, we see a rapidly changing landscape, one where shows nostalgic for a simper time screen opposite imaginative, forward-thinking programs. Although many 1960s shows feel very much of their time, there's a stylish charm that makes them still enjoyable to watch today.

Mel Brooks, who directed Teri Garr in the iconic 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein, remembered the actor upon her death Tuesday, recalling Garr’s talent and spirit.
“So very sorry to hear about Teri Garr’s passing,” Brooks said in a statement on social media. “She was so talented and so funny. Her humor and lively spirit made the Young Frankenstein set a pleasure to work on. Her ‘German’ accent had us all in stitches! She will be greatly missed.”
Garr was a standout in a film filled with standouts. She played Inga, the German lab assistant to the visiting American Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, played of course by Gene Wilder. As the seemingly ditsy — “seemingly” being the operative word — Inga, Garr employed a rather ersatz German accent, hence Brooks’ quote marks around the word.

According to her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, Garr died of multiple sclerosis after struggling with health issues in recent years. She passed away on Tuesday, leaving a legacy behind that shines like she did on the silver screen.
Garr began her Hollywood journey with minor roles in Elvis Presley movies during the 1960s. She appeared in films like Viva Las Vegas and Roustabout and also in Pajama Party, which starred Annette Funicello, Tommy Kirk, and Elsa Lanchester. Garr appears in various classic TV series, such as Star Trek, Batman, That Girl, Mayberry, It Takes a Thief, Room 222, and more. "You can fly?? You can fly!!" Time for yet another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. Back to the 90s again to revisit one of the best animated movies ever made. Back in 1999, Brad Bird directed a movie called The Iron Giant as his feature directorial debut. It didn't do so well at the box office, but that's okay, because it has gone on to become one of the most beloved, remembered, and celebrated animated movies of all-time. And if you haven't seen it, any day is a good day to watch this one – this post will be your reminder. From director Brad Bird – a young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy. The movie features the voices of Eli Marienthal as Hogarth Hughes, Vin Diesel (yes for real!!) as The Iron Giant, Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Aniston, James Gammon, Cloris Leachman, and M. Emmet Walsh.

The new Todd Phillips film is about a pair of Jokers and this week’s film quiz focuses on other movie duos.
They say it takes two to tango, but no one ever says it takes two to Tango And Cash. Why would they? Stupid thing to say. Anyway, October’s first big release Joker: Folie à Deux sees Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker joined by Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn for an all-singing, all-dancing sequel – just don’t call it a musical! And as Warner Bros also announced the animated Robin movie Dynamic Duo earlier this week, we’re quizzing for two.
As always, there are three rounds and 30 questions in total. Once you’ve completed today’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. This is just for fun, but please let us know how...

The 1975 TV series "Wonder Woman" is deeply beloved by dutiful Gen-Xers who watched it as children. The show's combination of silly action, funky music, and campy humor hit a sweet spot, presenting the title heroine as bold, strong, and capable, but also upbeat, happy, and capable of whimsy. Also, because lead actress Lynda Carter is so dazzling, many Gen-Xers may confess to having a crush on Wonder Woman at some point. The series was a hit, lasting 59 episodes over three seasons. Along with 1952's "The Adventures of Superman," 1966's "Batman," and 1978's "The Incredible Hulk," "Wonder Woman" was, for many decades, one of the most celebrated superhero TV shows ever made.
"Wonder Woman" began its life as a 1974 pilot starring Cathy Lee Crosby, as a reimagined version of the character. That pilot didn't fly, but ABC was eager to do something successful with the character and launched a second pilot...
