Selena Gomez says her ‘Only Murders in the Building’ role feels personal: ‘I’ve been confused and weird sometimes’
Image
Selena Gomez says her quirky, confused, and occasionally awkward character in Only Murders in the Building hits closer to home than fans might think.

"I think a lot of places in my life it’s been kind of figuring out what’s right and what’s wrong and it feels natural for me to portray Mabel in that manner of just trying to figure out where she fits in,” Gomez said at the Television Academy’s Televerse festival on Saturday, where she opened up about her connection to her character.

At the the Only Murders in the Building panel, Gomez was joined by costar Steve Martin and showrunner John Hoffman. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Det. Donna Williams on the show, hosted the Hulu panel and Martin Short joined remotely via video.

“She knows that she has these two characters [Short and Martin] that have her back no matter what,...

Julia Fox Joins ‘Elsbeth’ as Season 3 Guest Star (Exclusive)
Image
Julia Fox is the latest guest star to join CBS’ police procedural “Elsbeth.” She will play a New York City “grief influencer” in the third season of the dramedy, a spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight.”

Fox will play Raquel Drabowski, described by CBS as a “Staten Island widow who transformed herself into an upscale NYC ‘Grief Influencer’ and reality star on the hit dating series ‘Black Veil.'”

“Elsbeth” Season 3 premieres on Oct. 12. The show stars Carrie Preston as the de facto detective Elsbeth Tascioni. The majority of the show functions as a “howcatchem” mystery, rather than a “whodunit,” meaning the audience is usually privy to who the murderer is at the beginning of each episode. The series premiered in February 2024 and kicked off its second season just months after the first season finished airing.

Fox joins a long list of “Elsbeth” guest star alumni, including Matthew Broderick,...

The Cinematography of ‘The Gilded Age’ Brings the Old World Crashing Into the New
Image
It’s not just Newport society balls that need to be perfectly on theme and planned to a T. The de rigeur grandeur and opulence of “The Gilded Age” is the result of months of planning, very careful maneuvering, and miles of fake marbling. But the visual language of the show has ever so slowly expanded over the HBO series’s three seasons to be larger and more dynamic. The trick to making “The Gilded Age” even more transporting, according to cinematographer Manuel Billeter, has been to enhance our perspective both outwards and inwards.

Billeter has been behind the camera on “The Gilded Age” since Season 1, and started out by using lens choices to follow the show’s demarcation between the “Old Money” Van Rhijns and the “New Money” Russells. Scenes where the former powered the story — usually, let’s be real, Christine Baranski’s Agnes — were shot on anamorphic lenses,...

Only Murders season 5 trailer spoils roles of 8 new guest stars
Image
Only Murders in the Building has dropped its first trailer for season 5, which shows the roles for its whopping eight guest stars!

Only Murders in the Building has become one of Hulu’s biggest original hits. It’s partly thanks to the great mix of mystery and comedy, as viewers love seeing the heroes solving crimes in a posh New York apartment building. It also works for the fantastic chemistry of leads Steve Martin (actor Charles), Martin Short (egotistical Broadway producer Oliver), and Selena Gomez (quirky artist Mabel).

Each season also boasts a bevy of amazing guest stars, most only around for one season, while others do return. That includes iconic Oscar-winner Meryl Streep as Oliver's girlfriend, Loretta Dunkin and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as the trio’s police detective aide Donna Willis.

Season 5 is no different as the trailer shows the peeks at the year’s mystery and who the major guest stars play!

The Arconia gets visited by the mob after a beloved character’s death in the Only Murders in the Building Season 5 trailer
Mabel
It’s a miracle anyone ever sleeps in the Arconia, given that bodies are consistently piling up on the premises. Thankfully, the sleuthy trio, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short), are on the case. Sadly, the victim of this season’s whodunit is the Arconia’s beloved doorman, Lester. Who would dare hurt this kind man? We ask ourselves the same question while watching Hulu‘s trailer for Only Murders in the Building Season 5.

Before you throw stones, Lester kicking the bucket is not a spoiler. He was found dead in a fountain in the Arconia courtyard at the end of Season 4, and after reading the incident’s police report, the trio immediately suspects foul play. As Mabel, Charles, and Oliver search for clues, they discover that Lester talked to a high-ranking mob member before his death. This revelation leads the trifecta down a rabbit hole of money,...

‘Only Murders In The Building’s Season 5 Trailer Hints At Mob Connection In Doorman Death Investigation
Image
Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building is set to premiere its fifth season September 9, and the comedy’s first official trailer is setting up fans for hilarious chaos.

As a brief refresher, in the Season 4 finale, a new dead victim was revealed: doorman Lester Coluca (Teddy Coluca), a character that had been part of the story since day one. Poor Lester was found deceased in a water fountain just outside the Arconia by the unluckiest trio, Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Arconia residents who have a knack for getting caught up in murder mysteries.

In the trailer and back in the present day, a police report says Lester’s death was accidental. However, Charles, Oliver and Mabel know better, so they question everything. They’ve helped investigate four murders thus far, of course, all of which were covered extensively on their...

Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Denée Benton, and more ‘The Gilded Age’ instant Emmy predictions as Season 3 ends
Image
A near death. Two shocking engagements. Sisters finally reconciling. The Gilded Age Season 3 is officially behind us, which means it's the perfect time to dive into its future Emmy chances.

Remember, the Television Academy's eligibility period runs from June 1 of one year to May 31 of the next, which means the third season of HBO's buzzy, soapy costume drama will contend at the 2026 Emmys. The eight-episode installment wrapped on Sunday to great fanfare, and a fourth season has already been ordered.

In the Season 3 finale, George Russell (Morgan Spector) survives a gunshot wound thanks to the quick work of Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), who happened to be next door visiting his love interest, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Despite the violence temporarily bringing George and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) together, he ultimately decides to separate from his wife because of the way she always puts her own interests ahead of his — i.

‘The Gilded Age’ Scores A Fourth Consecutive Series High Audience With Season 3’s Penultimate Episode
Image
The Gilded Age just keeps reaching new heights as it heads toward its Season 3 finale.

The penultimate episode drew 4.6M viewers in the three days since it debuted on HBO on Sunday, setting another series record, per Warner Bros. Discovery. This is now the fourth consecutive week that the third season has managed a new series high audience.

Ahead of Sunday’s finale, the show is apparently drawing in new viewers at a record pace. The company says that The Gilded Age is currently adding viewers at a rate nearly 50% higher than in previous seasons.

Of course, newcomers are playing catch up, so much of this viewership is actually boosting the previous seasons, too. Wbd says that Season 1 viewership was up approximately 30% last week compared to the same week leading into last season’s Episode 7.

This bodes incredibly well for the show’s fourth season, as it has already received a renewal from HBO.

" It’s always an honor to be nominated," Emmy-contending production designer Greg Grande declares about his sixth career Emmy nomination, this time for Mid-Century Modern. My first reaction was, ‘wow, I'm glad it holds its own, but in a completely different format; a completely different situation in how we build the sets and how we shoot them and our budgets." HBO Max, Carrie Coon Poke Fun At Streamer’s Spanish-Language Glitch During ‘The Gilded Age’ Episode: “Lo Siento”
Image
For a number of viewers, The Gilded Age looked — or rather, sounded — a little different last night.

According to some social media users, the latest episode of the Emmy-winning HBO period drama debuted on streamer HBO Max with an accidental language swap that automatically played the episode in Spanish despite being on the English-language setting.

“. @hbomax The Gilded Age is currently only playing in Spanish on my app and I cannot follow what is happening to Señora Russell. Help! Ayuda!” wrote The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon in one viral post.

The glitch, as some quickly figured out, was easily resolved by tooling with the platform’s settings — ironically, by changing the audio to “Spanish (Latin America)” for the English version. Deadline confirmed that the issue has since been resolved.

Earlier today, both the platform and star Carrie Coon poked fun at the snafu online.

“But for real, lo siento...

Stephen Colbert to Guest Star as Fictional Late Night Host on CBS Crime Series ‘Elsbeth’
Image
Stephen Colbert may be saying goodbye to “The Late Show” next year — though not by choice — but before he does that, he’ll have an entirely new late night talk show on CBS. Well, kind of.

Colbert will guest star on an episode of the CBS series “Elsbeth” next season, TheWrap has confirmed. In it, he’ll stick to what he knows, playing a fictional late night host named Scotty Bristol, who hosts “Way Late With Scotty Bristol.” It’s unclear exactly when Colbert’s episode will air, but the new season of “Elsbeth” premieres on October 12, and he has already filmed his appearance.

“Elsbeth” is a murder mystery series starring Carrie Preston as the eponymous crime-solver. It’s unclear exactly how Colbert’s character will fit into the story, but typically, the series welcomes a guest star — previously including legends like Nathan Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick,...

‘The Gilded Age’ Director Salli Richardson-Whitfield on Key Character’s Fate Going Into Finale: “No One Saw That Coming”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from season three, episode seven of The Gilded Age, “Ex-Communicated.”]

The seventh episode of The Gilded Age‘s third season, titled “Ex-Communicated,” literally ended with a bang. Somebody shot George Russell. Or at him. Viewers aren’t sure, as we saw a bullet headed for George and then the screen went black.

The Gilded Age executive producer and director Salli Richardson-Whitfield, who helmed this episode and the finale, is not giving up those goods to The Hollywood Reporter. But she does speak on other pivotal developments, and there are quite a few.

As harrowing as the prospect of losing George (spectacularly portrayed by Morgan Spector) is, a lot happened in this episode. Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) released a fictional book about New York society that contained thinly veiled details of the lives of Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) and more, and thought he could just carry on as before. There is a...

Stephen Colbert Takes Fictional Late-Night Seat on CBS’s Elsbeth
Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert will return to late-night television this fall, but as a fictional host instead of himself: CBS confirmed that the comedian will appear in season three of its crime comedy Elsbeth, portraying Scotty Bristol, the sardonic anchor of the in-universe program Way Late with Scotty Bristol.

Filmed in New York last week, the episode is slated to air in October, only days after the series’ 12 October premiere, and adds another marquee guest to a show that has already enlisted Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

Colbert’s route to the case-of-the-week began during a February segment of The Late Show with Elsbeth star Wendell Pierce, when he joked about wanting to play a corpse on a procedural; Pierce vowed to “make it happen,” and producers upgraded the gag to a speaking role within days.

In the script, Bristol’s topical monologue becomes crucial evidence after a backstage slaying, giving the...

Stephen Colbert Lands New Late Night Role on CBS Crime Comedy ‘Elsbeth’
Image
Late night television can’t get rid of Stephen Colbert that easily.

After it was revealed that CBS canceled the comedian’s long-running late night talk show, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Hollywood Reporter learned on Sunday that Colbert has landed another hosting gig on a separate CBS show.

Colbert is set to make a guest appearance on an upcoming season three episode of the crime comedy Elsbeth, which returns Oct. 12. Vulture reported that Colbert will play the host of a fictional late night talk show called Way Late With Scotty Bristol.

Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston, Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson, is a murder-of-the-week show. It follows astute but unconventional attorney Elsbeth Tascioni (Preston), who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD.

Colbert’s episode was filmed this week; however, his guest appearance has been months in the making.

Stephen Colbert to Guest Star as Late-Night Host on CBS Crime Comedy ‘Elsbeth’
Image
Stephen Colbert is taking his hosting skills to another CBS property.

The “Late Show” helmsman will guest star in an upcoming episode of the crime comedy series “Elsbeth,” appearing as a late-night frontman, Variety has confirmed.

A CBS rep declined Variety‘s request for comment.

While it’s unknown how Colbert will fit into the weekly mystery, the details of his role have been made public. He will play the leading man of the fictional late-night talk show “Way Late with Scotty Bristol,” according to Vulture, which first reported Colbert’s involvement.

While the episode was filmed this week, Colbert’s “Elsbeth” role has long been in the works, kick-started by an appearance from series star Wendell Pierce on “The Late Show.”

During Pierce’s interview with Colbert, the late-night host said he had asked CBS to play a corpse on one of the network’s crime procedurals. Upon hearing this,...

Stephen Colbert Gets New CBS Late-Night Gig In Primetime With ‘Elsbeth’ Role
Image
How is this for an ironic twist — as Stephen Colbert is preparing to say goodbye as the host of CBS’ The Late Show, he also is portraying a late-night host for CBS with a guest role on the upcoming third season of the network’s crime anthology Elsbeth, Deadline has confirmed.

Colbert is not playing himself in the episode, which filmed this week. According to Vulture, which first reported the news, he plays the host of the fictional Way Late with Scotty Bristol. Each episode of Elsbeth solves a different murder; it is unclear how Bristol is connected to that case of the week.

A rep for CBS declined comment.

Primetime series take months of lead time from conceiving an episode to its filming, so Elsbeth’s late-night storyline had been in the works long before CBS announced two and a half weeks ago that The Late Show will be ending next May.

‘The Gilded Age’ Renewed For Season 4 By HBO
Image
HBO has handed a Season 4 renewal to Julian Fellowes’ period drama The Gilded Age. The pickup comes ahead of the Season 3 finale on August 10, which will wrap some storylines while setting up more drama and intrigue.

The Gilded Age, which leans into the New York theater community for its strong — and expansive — ensemble cast, has been a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. Launching on HBO’s lower-profile Monday night, it defied the odds and drew a solid viewership to earn a Season 2 renewal. Moving to HBO’s marquee Sunday night, The Gilded Age has been on an upswing since, finding a new gear with its current third season.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age...

All that’s gilded is gold, it turns out. HBO’s period drama “The Gilded Age” has hit another viewership high.

Per HBO, the fifth episode of the show’s third season reached 4 million viewers in Live+3 viewing. That beats the previous series high set just last week with episode four’s 3.8 million viewers. The show is outperforming its previous season by 20% thus far and reached its highest-ever weekly viewership on HBO Max, based on weekly viewing accounts

“The Gilded Age” had found love with critics since its debut, but did not start off strong in the ratings. It has slowly built its audience over its three seasons via word of mouth, with this season being the most popular yet by far.

Spoilers Ahead
