James L. Brooks Finally Returns with First Trailer for Ella McCay
Image
In the fifteen interminably long years since James L. Brooks’ last directorial feature, the kind of adult-focused, warm dramas with recognizably emphatic characters that have defined his career have sadly fallen out of fashion. After staying busy helping emerging filmmakers like Kelly Fremon Craig realize their visions with the stellar The Edge of Seventeen and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, the 85-year-old filmmaker is now making his overdue return this year.

Ella McCay, a political comedy-drama set for a December 12 release, stars Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, Kumail Nanjiani, Spike Fearn, Ayo Edebiri, Jack Lowden, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, Albert Brooks, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.

The Simpsons Episode That's Filled With Stargate Easter Eggs
Image
"The Simpsons" has surely featured the best guest stars of any TV show in history. Some of that is simply by virtue of having run for a full 36 seasons, but in the early years especially, the show had so much cachet as a cultural force that big-name stars simply couldn't stay away. Though there is one type of guest star "The Simpsons" has yet to land, the long-running series has hosted everyone from A-list actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer to musical icons such as Johnny Cash.

As such, Richard Dean Anderson of "MacGyver" and "Stargate Sg-1" fame might not seem like the most notable guest appearance. But the actor's cameo on "The Simpsons" was about more than simply securing yet another celebrity to add to the long list of guest stars. As it happens, Anderson's "Sg-1" character, Colonel Jack O'Neill, is a big fan of the animated sitcom, to...

Billy Joel Has Aged Into Rory B. Bellows, Krusty the Clown’s Alter Ego
Image
A well-known entertainer runs into financial difficulties. The IRS is coming for him. If he has an affinity for it, maybe he tries his luck on the open water. So goes the story of Krusty the Clown — though it shares some features with the story of Billy Joel, and we need to talk about them.

The relevant incident in Krusty’s life comes in Season Seven of The Simpsons. In the episode “Bart the Fink,” after Bart (voice of Nancy Cartwright) opens a checking account, he figures out that he can get an autograph from Krusty the Clown (Dan Castellaneta) if he sends Krusty a check and gets it back with Krusty’s endorsement. But Krusty doesn’t sign it: He stamps it to an offshore bank, and, long story short, Krusty turns out to be a massive income tax cheat. When the IRS starts seizing property — even turning Krusty Burger into IRS Burger,...

Simpsons Showrunner Explains Why This 1 Character Has Never Been Better
Image
Although The Simpsons has been around a long time, the series showrunner proved the show can remain fresh thanks to its renewed focus on Marge in a recent interview. With over 790 episodes to its name and a theatrical movie spinoff, The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted primetime American TV show in history.

As such, it is hardly shocking that the show is considered tired by some commentators online. In fact, the critical reception of The Simpsons has varied so much over the decades that the phenomenon has an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to it. That being said, The Simpsons season 37 arrives at a high point for the series.

While few commentators would claim The Simpsons has reached the heights of its Golden Age again, the show is enjoying a critical renaissance. As one Vulture article noted, The Simpsons is "Good again" thanks to a renewed focus on character-centric writing since season 33 began.

‘The Simpsons’ Producer Reacts to Exaggerated Reports of Marge’s Death
Image
Ignore the hysteria about Marge Simpson’s death in The Simpsons’ Season 36 finale, “Estranger Things.” The Julie Kavner character passed away in that episode’s storyline, but executive producer Matt Selman said the death isn’t canon. “There is no canon,” Selman explained in a new Variety interview. “The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon!” In “Estranger Things,” Bart and Lisa become estranged and only reclaim their sibling bond years in the future, after Margie dies. Unlike Marge’s epitaph, though, her demise is hardly set in stone. “Obviously, since The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time,” Selman said. “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.” “Estranger Things” aired on May 18, but media coverage of Marge’s death exploded last week. Marge lives! Here are 3 other ‘Simpsons’ characters that returned from the grave — and 3 who stayed dead
Image
You can't keep a good Simpsons matriarch down... or up in heaven for that matter.

The Simpsons recently ended its 36th season on Fox with a flash-forward episode revealing that Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) has gone to her great reward — in this case an afterlife where she's married to Ringo Starr. Far from being thrilled for her eternal soul, fans freaked out about Marge's future fate. And their fury forced executive producer, Matt Selman, to go on the record reminding everyone that death is an elastic concept in the show's animated universe.

"The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon," Selman told Variety on Thursday. "Since the The Simpsons future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago."

A Simpsons Producer Confirmed Whether Marge Is Dead After That Season 36 Finale
Image
It's been true the past few years, and it is still true today: "The Simpsons" is still good, people! Even 36 seasons in, the cultural phenomenon has proven to be the one truly reliable American institution left, a staple of television, a titan of pop culture, one of the most influential animated shows of all time.

In season 36 we saw great episodes featuring pairings we don't see that often anymore, like an episode where Homer and his dad create a sport, or one where Bart and his grandpa bond over baseball, and an episode that parodied "The White Lotus" (and killed a character we hadn't seen in decades). And yet, the best two episodes of the season were all about Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner). The first one is titled "P.S. I Hate You" and deals with Marge's need to be liked and the chaos that ensues when her secret hate...

Marge Simpson Is Very Much Alive, ‘The Simpsons’ EP Says After Finale Sparked Online Outrage: ‘There Is No Canon!’
Image
You can put down the pitchforks and save the strongly-worded letters: Marge Simpson is not going anywhere. Despite a sudden uptick in online hot takes that the Simpson matriarch died in the show’s Season 36 finale, she has done no such thing. “The Simpsons” producers confirm that Marge is still very much alive, and will be around for years to come. Hell, she’s probably going to outlive all of us.

That’s the official word from “The Simpsons” executive producer Matt Selman, who confirms that what happened in the recent season finale of the series is not canon. That’s because, after 790 episodes, “there is no canon,” he told Variety. “‘The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!”

There have been so many flash-forwards and flashbacks on the show that have changed over the years that it would be wise to step back and take a breath when it comes...

What Does Marge Simpson’s ‘Death’ Mean for the Future of ‘The Simpsons’?
Image
Keeping things fresh in its 36th season, The Simpsons took to drastic measures and murdered one of their most beloved characters: blue-haired matriarch Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner). In the season finale titled “Estranger Things,” which aired on May 18, the show offered a glimpse into the future, revealing Bart and Lisa (voiced by Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith) as estranged adults. The finale’s nostalgic flashback revisited Bart and Lisa’s first introduction to the psychotic cat-and-mouse duo Itchy and Scratchy. But when they discovered that baby sister Maggie also loved the show, their special bond over its hilariously horrifying cartoon violence began to fade, causing the siblings to drift apart, much to Marge’s dismay. Worried that her children will become distant in the future, she lectures her kids about leaning on each other for support in the future. “Whatever you do, don’t drift apart. You share a...

‘The Simpsons’ Shockingly Kills Off Core Family Member and Leaves Fans Devastated in Season 36 Finale
Image
After nearly four decades of animated antics, The Simpsons pulled off one of its most emotional swerves yet. The Season 36 finale, titled “Estranger Things,” delivered a moment that left fans gobsmacked: the death of Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner). Yes, that Marge Simpson — the blue-haired, gravel-voiced heart of the family. But before you spiral into full-blown grief, here’s the catch: Marge’s death takes place in a flash-forward timeline, and isn’t expected to affect the show’s canon continuity. Still, that didn’t stop fans from getting misty-eyed over the surprisingly poignant send-off.

The episode opens with Bart (Nancy Cartwright) and Lisa (Julie Kavner) bonding over The Itchy & Scratchy Show — until they discover it's actually made for babies. Cue sibling separation. Their rift alarms Marge, who gives them an emotional plea:

“Your father and I won't be around forever. When you get older, you'll need to lean on each other.

Not NCIS Or Law & Order, But This Animated Sitcom Holds The Record For The Longest-Running Scripted Primetime Series In The U.S.
Image
What Is The Longest-Running Scripted Primetime Series In The US? (Photo Credit – Hotstar)

When I think about long-running primetime scripted shows, NCIS and Law & Order often come to mind. But there’s a show that blows them all away: The Simpsons (via TV Insider). Clocking in at an incredible 36 years and still going strong, it holds the record for the longest-running scripted primetime series in the U.S.

The Simpsons felt like it was always part of my weekly TV routine. Sure, its later seasons have gotten mixed reviews, but it’s been heavily entertaining and often downright hilarious across nearly four decades.

The Simpsons: Where It All Began

What struck me most was how this dysfunctional Springfield family shaped popular culture. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie were literal mirrors reflecting America’s quirks, flaws, and absurdities. After 36 seasons and 790 episodes (at the time of writing), the show’s satirical edge remained sharp,...

As The Simpsonshas been on the air since the 1980s, the Matt Groening-created show's starring cast members have has their voices become synonymous with their characters. However, as there have been some characters getting recast on the show, some fans might be wondering if that might happen with one of the show's main cast members.

The Simpsons has now managed to get through Season 36 with the same voice cast members voicing the family from the very start: Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa). The same can be said for the show's other main cast members, each of whom voices a slew of beloved side characters: Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria.

In a new interview Cracked, showrunner Matt Selman was asked about the possibility of the show's main characters continuing on past their current actors voicing them. He admitted that it would be...

Why Didn’t ‘The Simpsons’ Hire This Former ‘SNL’ Cast Member to Play Milhouse?

Simpsons fans can all breathe a sigh of relief because the show finally announced that they have secured a new voice actor to play Milhouse. As we’ve already mentioned, musician Kelly Macleod will be taking over the role originated by Pamela Hayden, which was created purely so that Bart had someone to talk to while marketing candy bars to children.

We’ll all have to wait until Sunday night to find out how Macleod’s Milhouse sounds, but we just learned that a familiar name unsuccessfully tried out for the part: former Saturday Night Live cast member Melissa Villaseñor.

“I’ve been good guys, okay?” Villaseñor told the crowd at a recent stand-up set. “Maybe I’m not in a lot of movies and shows, but I’ve been doing a lot of cartoon work. You know what I did that was cool, I didn’t get it, but...

The Bones Actor You Likely Forgot Guest-Starred On The Simpsons
Image
In 2009, Fox created a "Simpsons" scavenger hunt to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the series. It involved hiding Easter eggs and references to the animated sitcom in all of the network's prime-time programs, including "House," "Lie to Me," and "Glee." At the time, Fox's popular procedural "Bones" had been running for four years and was in the midst of its fifth season. As such, it too received the "Simpsons" scavenger hunt treatment, and might have been the show that most successfully paid tribute to Matt Groening's series.

Season 5, episode 7, entitled "The Dwarf in the Dirt," contained multiple nods to "The Simpsons," including a wrestler named Bumblebee Man and a scene at the Jeffersonian Institute that featured an x-ray of Homer Simpson's skull hanging in the background, revealing an alarmingly small brain. The episode also featured a cameo by Homer voice actor Dan Castellaneta, who plays police officer Navarro...

‘The Simpsons’ Twins Patty and Selma Undergo Major Weight Loss Transformation
Image
Marge Simpson’s (Julie Kavner) twin sisters Patty and Selma Bouvier (Kavner) have been a staple on The Simpsons for years. They are known for their dry humor, chain-smoking, and hatred towards Marge’s husband, Homer (Dan Castellaneta). In the past, the two never seemed to care too much about their appearance. However, now the twins are gaining some time in the spotlight for their weight loss transformation. Sunday’s (April 6) episode, titled, “The Last Man Expanding,” saw Patty and Selma, as well as another supporting character, all slimmer because of a popular weight loss drug. Comic Book Guy (Hank Azaria), who is known for wearing a blue t-shirt that is way too small for him, wore a smaller version of his shirt and red shorts, which fit him a lot better. He was seen carrying a “family-sized” version of the drug down a sidewalk with a big smile on his face.

One of ‘The Simpsons’ Most Loathsome Characters Never Made It to the Air
Image
The world of The Simpsons is chock-full of memorable characters that aren’t related to the titular family — from Krusty the Clown to Hans Moleman to the surprisingly chill Hugh Jass.

But as a fan on Reddit recently pointed out, there’s one Simpsons character who never actually made it onto the show. The aptly-named “Mrs. Gross” was designed way back when the series first began, and 36 years later, she has yet to appear in a single episode.

Former Simpsons writer and showrunner Josh Weinstein once bemoaned the fact that the show “never did any Mrs. Gross stories.” He also shared a drawing of the character from an “early Simpsons design guide.”

Mrs. Gross, as evidenced by the illustration, was a crossing guard. And she would have been voiced by Marge Simpson herself, Julie Kavner. Gross was originally set to be in “Moaning Lisa,” the Season One episode that focused on Lisa’s existential malaise.

The Simpsons Holds An Awards Record That Won't Be Beaten Anytime Soon
Image
"The Simpsons" debuted shortly before Christmas in 1989, which means anyone under the age of 35 has never known a world without it. "The Simpsons" wasn't just a hit, but a cultural fulcrum point. Matt Groening's cynical worldview, filtered through an animated takedown of traditional American sitcoms, came to define the prevailing attitudes of the nation in the 1990s. We were over-educated, embittered by the excesses of the Reagan years, and ready to see television mutate into something punky and deconstructionist. "The Simpsons" was at the heart of that.

And then, even as the 1990s ended, "The Simpsons" never dipped in quality, turning out a full decade of invaluable TV comedy. While public attitudes shifted in the early 2000s ("shock" humor and post-9/11 despair came to define the era), "The Simpsons" persisted. The makers of the show found they could simply keep on working for as long as audiences were interested.
