Stephen King's It Getting New Illustrated Limited Edition, With Foreword By Guillermo Del Toro
Image
Stephen King’s landmark It will receive a new illustrated, limited edition with an introduction by Guillermo Del Toro. Rightfully regarded as a horror classic, It has scared audiences senseless for close to 40 years. Now, this masterpiece will soon be published in a gorgeous hardcover edition, complete with new illustrations, and all approved by King himself.

The Folio Society announced their new edition of It today. Limited to 500 copies, this edition comes with illustrations by Jim Burns as well as a new and insightful introduction by acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro. The Folio Society provided a preview of Del Toro’s opening:

It speaks of the struggle that never ends, the eternal vigil against evil that is, by necessity, cyclical. The many shapes the cosmic dread takes keep changing: sometimes smiling, sometimes frowning at us,” said Guillermo Del Toro in his deeply personal introduction. “It was a presage of what...

Mark Hamill Explains Why "Nobody Believed" He Was The Joker
Image
Mark Hamill is now synonymous with the Joker thanks to Batman: The Animated Series, but his DC casting was once unthinkable. Mark Hamill joined Batman: The Animated Series' cast after Tim Curry dropped out of the Joker role due to health reasons. Since then, Hamill has voiced several versions of the Clown Prince of Crime, including the animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke and the Arkham video games.

In an episode of Bullseye with Jesse Thorn, Mark Hamill revealed that "nobody believed" he was the one voicing the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. Hamill had been seeking different roles to Luke Skywalker after his Star Wars success, and the Joker was the character that "turned [his]career around." According to Hamill, even fellow actors thought his voice was artificially altered to achieve the Joker's tone. Read Hamill's full comments below:

"It was only when I auditioned and got the...

Why Sara Ramirez's Callie Torres Left Grey's Anatomy After 12 Seasons
Image
Real hospitals experience turnover all the time; ask any real medical professional. People go elsewhere after they finish their residencies, or doctors migrate to become attending physicians — it's just part of the reality of the job. With that said, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that "Grey's Anatomy," the long-running medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes, is particularly medically accurate, because I'd like to think that bombs don't end up in body cavities all that often in real operating rooms and I really hope that fatality rates are lower amongst actual doctors than they are among the staff of the Seattle-based surgeons on this series ... because those doctors die a lot, and it's pretty alarming. This definitely doesn't stop "Grey's Anatomy" from being entertaining, and the show's outstanding ensemble cast is what makes it such a fun watch — and that definitely includes Sara Ramírez's extremely talented orthopedic surgeon Dr.

'Terrifier' Team Announces Sequel to 2024 Horror Gem 'Stream'
Image
Among all the horror films of 2024 that garnered a lot of attention, there was one hidden gem that flew under the radar despite having a 95% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Titled Stream, it marked the first appearance of Tim Curry on the big screen in 14 years, and was one of the last movies to star Tony Todd before his untimely death. Now, it's getting a sequel thanks to Fuzz on the Lens Productions, the same team who had a hand in the two most recent Terrifier films.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Stream 2 will "build on its predecessor's all-too-real technology-driven storyline while still maintaining the feel of a classic slasher." Fans who have seen it will recall that Stream's plot centered around a vacationing family who were the unwitting participants in a live-streamed game that featured four serial killers competing to see which one of them could score the most creative kills.

The Clue Movie Has One Last Ending That's Impossible To Watch Today
Image
"Clue" from 1985 is arguably the single greatest movie adaptation of a game ever made, whether video, board, tabletop, or children's game. Even 40 years later, it remains not just a hilarious comedy film in its own right, one of the best detective movies of all time, or even just a fantastic way of taking a familiar product and translating the gameplay to the big screen without sacrificing a good narrative. It is also a rather cool and effective experiment.

It's not like this was some small indie film. There was plenty of reason for optimism when it was announced and made. Jonathan Lynn's "Clue" boasts one hell of a comedic cast that includes Michael McKean, Leslie Ann Warren, Eileen Brannan, Martin Mull, Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, and Tim Curry.

It follows the barebones premise of the board game: strangers arrive at a mansion and one of them commits a murder.

A Christmas Carol Remake in the Works From Nosferatu Director (With Perfect Casting Choice Eyed for Scrooge)
Image
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is the next classic tale that's set to get a reimagining in Hollywood. After providing a successful new take on Nosferatu, filmmaker Robert Eggers has now been tapped as the next director to bring to life a new live-action movie based on the beloved holiday story.

Per Deadline, Warner Bros. is reportedly moving forward with Eggers on a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Eggers will write the screenplay in addition to directing the film. Notably, no cast members have been officially attached to the project at this time. However, word is that Eggers is writing the script with the frequent collaborator Willem Dafoe in mind for the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Eggers will also produce alongside Maiden Voyage's Chris Columbus and Elenor Columbus.

While there's no guarantee Dafoe will accept the role, it's fair to say he'd consider it, given how he appears to enjoy collaborating with Eggers.

Disney has a perfect method to use the Muppets (but will they?)
Image
Disney still has so much potential for the Muppets, and they need to revive a too-short-lived theme that showed the Muppets at their best!

Right now, theme park fans are buzzing over the closure of Muppet*Vision 3D. The beloved Hollywood Studios attraction was opened in 1991, just a year after the death of Jim Henson. No doubt, because it was Henson’s final project, Disney was always reluctant to drop it, even when the movie was showing its age.

The Muppets will remain at the park with plans to remake Rock 'n' Roller Coaster to a theme based on the Electric Mayhem. There are also hopes for other uses for the property, which may include a movie or show. And if Disney wanted to use the Muppets more, there’s a great possibility they already touched on.

The forgotten Muppet Literary adaptations

One of the greatest “what ifs” in Disney...

The Infamous Critical Flop That Failed To Capture Jurassic Park's Box Office Magic
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"In every frame, it aspires to be a theme park." Those are the words of critic Hal Hinson writing in 1995 for The Washington Post about director Frank Marshall's "Congo." Hinson was certainly not alone in his dismissal of the film, which was met with scathing reviews upon its release 30 years ago. Ironically, the film in question was made in direct response to the success of "Jurassic Park," a movie about making a dinosaur theme park, one also based on the works of Author Michael Crichton.

If there is one thing Hollywood will reliably do just about 100% of the time, it's attempting to recapture success. Because "X-Men" was a big hit in...

Tim Curry has written his memoir, due out in October
Image
Tim Curry’s memoir, Vagabond, is going to be published in October. Here’s more information on what’s in store for us.

I’m going for Congo. I know I’m supposed to vote for The Rocky Horror Picture Show as the best Tim Curry performance, or Pennywise in It, but the way he steams into 1995’s Congo and rips it away from everyone in his vicinity.

Curry’s life took a major turn, sadly, back in 2012. He suffered a stroke that nearly killed him, and understandably has been away from the public eye since. His work continues to be widely enjoyed, though, and now he’s at a point where he’s telling his story.

It comes in the form of his memoir, which is being published by Century on 14th October of this very year. It goes by the name of Vagabond, and it’s gone up for preorder.

One Piece: Zoro Fans Won’t Like It After Knowing Oda Based Sanji on Himself After a Key Detail
Image
The characters of One Piece were all meticulously crafted, with many of them based on celebrities. For example, Emporio Ivankov practically embodies Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-n-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The original three Admirals closely resemble very famous Japanese actors. The list goes on and on. We can see the thought that goes into their appearance and names.

The Straw Hats, on the other hand, are a unique blend of figures from pirate history and mythology. Luffy, for instance, is inspired by Hanuman, who is a deity in Hinduism, while also taking some traits from Journey to the West’s Sun Wukong and many other Shonen protagonists.

So, despite all these inspirations, does Eiichiro Oda not see himself in any of the characters? There is one Straw Hat that he finds himself relating to, and it’s “Black Leg” Sanji. Plenty of his own life experiences have...

Go Back to Derry: Stephen King’s ‘It’ is Now Streaming
Image
For better or worse, there’s no more enduring an icon from this generation of horror than Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Art the Clown might be up there, but Andy Muschietti’s It: Chapter 1 undoubtedly renewed interest in not only the works of Stephen King, but the horror genre in general. $704 million globally for an R-rated horror movie is no small feat. Both It: Chapter 1 and its sequel were phenomena, and there was no doubt the fine folks at Warner Bros. were going to want to milk that clown for all he’s worth.

The result is It – Welcome to Derry, an upcoming miniseries set to premiere on both HBO and streaming service Max this fall. The long-gestating series will see Bill Skarsgård return as Pennywise the Clown for a prequel series that explores the previous arrival and encounter with Pennywise. Which… sounds a lot...

The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester (4K): Criterion Collection Review
Image
The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester, Spine #1263, will be released in the Criterion Collection on May 27th, 2025.

As a child of the 90s, I grew up with Stephen Herek’s version of The Three Musketeers. It’s not particularly well-regarded these days, but with a cast including Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Tim Curry, it perfectly encapsulated its era and served as a solidly entertaining swashbuckler, at least through the eyes of a seven-year-old boy.

I was aware of other adaptations, including Richard Lester’s, but for decades, Harek’s film was my sole experience with the characters of Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel on screen. Now, with a digitally remastered 4K edition coming to the Criterion Collection, I’ve seen what is arguably the superior adaptation.

The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers plot

d’Artagnan (Michael York) dreams of becoming a musketeer. When...

Welcome To Derry Trailer: Pennywise Brings The Terror In 1960s Prequel Series
Image
Of all the monsters conjured up by Master of Horror Stephen King, Pennywise the Dancing Clown is easily the most iconic — and the most terrifying. An eldritch extraterrestrial that surfaces every 27 years to feast on the children of Derry, Maine, 'It' has haunted our dreams across King's original book, a Tim Curry led miniseries, and — in the shape of Bill Skarsgård — Andy Muschietti's It duology. Now, in It: Welcome To Derry, a prequel to Muschietti's two films, HBO Max is turning the clock back to 27 years before The Loser Club's first run-in with the killer clown to dig deeper into the origins of Pennywise and his reign of terror. Check out the creepy first trailer below:

"Anywhere but Derry." Missing children. Ignorant adults. A new band of kids on bikes. Faces smiling creepily at windows. And... there he is, Skarsgård's cosmic harlequin of horror, hanging out and mining aura in the sewers of Maine.

Pennywise Returns in the First Spooky ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Trailer
Image
In the three years since HBO announced plans to move forward with an It prequel series, fans of Stephen King’s horror novel-turned-film-series have been eagerly waiting for today. And what is today, you ask? Why, it’s the arrival of the first teaser for It: Welcome to Derry. Finally, the first look is here, and it is painting a truly terrifying and intriguing picture of what’s to come when the production makes its way onto the streamer later this year. Bringing a story to life that we’ve never seen play out on our screens, the title will give fans plenty of background about the sinister alien entity who caused so much terror and left nothing but chaos and destruction in its wake. With Bill Skarsgård returning to the role that he performed oh so well in Andrés Muschietti’s two-film series, audiences are truly in for quite a treat.

Steve Pepoon, Writer on ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ and ‘Alf,’ Dies at 68
Image
Steve Pepoon, who received an Emmy for writing an episode of The Simpsons as a freelancer, worked on other TV comedies like It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, Alf and Roseanne and co-created The Wild Thornberrys, has died. He was 68.

Pepoon has been in treatment for a heart condition called cardiac amyloidosis for the past two years and died unexpectedly May 3 outside his home in Paola, Kansas, his wife, Mary Stephenson, told The Hollywood Reporter.

After moving from his native Kansas to Los Angeles in 1979, Pepoon in late 1985 finally sold his first script, which became an episode of Silver Spoons that aired in January 1986. Fifteen months later, he was hired as a staff writer on Alf, another NBC comedy, and wrote for its final three seasons through 1990.

He kept writing on spec, and one script he did for Fox’s The Simpsons, “Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment,” won him his Emmy,...

Legendary Restaurateur Keith McNally Reveals His Favorite Celebrity Customer and “The Biggest Pain in the Ass”
Image
Balthazar. Pastis. Minetta Tavern. The Odeon. The more than a dozen restaurants outspoken British expat Keith McNally launched in Manhattan and D.C. over the decades exude a louche bohemian je ne sais quoi that make them seem as if they’d been transplanted tile by tile from Belle Époque Paris and tastefully modernized. You half expect to see Toulouse-Lautrec in the corner. More likely, you’ll spot Hollywood stars, literary types, media titans and not James Corden, whom McNally famously raked over the social media coals for being rude to a Balthazar waiter in 2022.

His speech impacted by a 2016 stroke, McNally found his voice on Instagram, where he dishes on his cultural likes and many dislikes and picks fights with everyone from Lauren Sánchez to fellow restaurateur and wit Graydon Carter. This month, he explores a longer, more introspective format. Upon the release of his new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything,...

Why Kevin Conroy Wanted To Play Two Other Batman: The Animated Series Characters
Image
Certain actors come to define certain roles, and that goes double for comic book movies. After 2008's "Iron Man" changed Hollywood forever and re-energized star Robert Downey Jr.'s career, the man spent the next decade convincing us all that he just is Iron Man. On the DC side of things, many would say that Christopher Reeve did the same thing with his "Superman" movies, even though his final outing as the Man of Steel, 1987's "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," became an infamous superhero movie that even Reeve regretted making.

While we're on the subject of DC, there is one man that can surely claim to rival Reeve: Kevin Conroy. The late actor inhabited the Dark Knight beginning with 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series" and went on to play the role across multiple projects, from other DC Animated Universe shows to video games and even in live-action as...

Luis Guzman Hypes 'Wednesday' Season 2 While Promoting Action Movie Havoc
Image
Wednesday fans have been waiting patiently – or impatiently in many cases – for the second season of Tim Burton’s reworking of The Addams Family to bring Jenna Ortega’s take on the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams back to Netflix. Now, the new season is only several months away – a lifetime, we know – but the hype around the new season has already started, and one person happy to buzz up Season 2 is star Luis Guzmán.

Guzmán follows Raul Julia and Tim Curry in taking on the role of The Addams Family patriarch Gomez, and in many ways his take on the character is much more in line with Charles Addams’ original comic strip character than any of his previous appearances. While speaking to MovieWeb’s George Edelman about his new movie, the Tom Hardy actioner Havoc, Guzmán shared a tease of Wednesday Season 2, noting that everyone is going to...

Let’s face it, a great villain makes the movie. They’re the chaos to the hero’s order, the drama behind every good plot twist, and honestly, usually the ones having the most fun.

Whether they’re blowing up cities, delivering spine-tingling monologues, or just glaring like they invented the art of menacing stares, villains are the spice of cinema. Some are evil geniuses, others are just straight-up psychos, but they all steal the spotlight in their twisted way. This list is all about those scene-stealing, nightmare-fueling, endlessly iconic bad guys (and gals) that turned good movies into unforgettable ones. So here it is: 20 movie villains...

Morons Who Defend Minecraft Theater Destruction Need To Get One Classic's Name Out Of Their Mouth
Image
"A Minecraft Movie" just celebrated its third weekend in theaters, continuing to bring in the big bucks (although it was dethroned this weekend by Ryan Coogler's "Sinners") and undoubtedly becoming one of the most memed films of the year. Unfortunately, the destructive and downright disgraceful practice of trashing theaters in response to Jack Black's Steve introducing the Chicken Jockey has continued. Theaters across the country are now starting to require parental chaperones for screenings of the PG-rated film in an attempt to quell the legitimate property damage being committed all in the name of "It's just a joke, bro."

Projectionists in theaters around the globe have similarly begun issuing pre-show warnings to try to quell the carnage, with Black even making surprise appearances at screenings to playfully tell the audience to resist throwing popcorn. One cinema worker posted their schedule on Twitter, writing, "I've just been informed that...

Is the ‘Clue’ TV Series Still Happening? Writer Shares Troubling Update
Image
Aside from video games, board games also get film and TV adaptations. One of them is Clue (or Cluedo), which was first announced in 2021, then later in 2024 when it was revealed to be an animated series that Sony will release. Unfortunately, this board game project was unable to leave the tabletop setting as it was recently reported that the show was canceled.

Clue's writer Dewayne Perkins revealed in an interview that the show was canceled but didn't give any reason why that was the case. He also didn't shed light on whether anyone else would pick up the project or what was going to happen to the IP. In 2021, it was reported that Fox was developing the Clue TV series, as it partnered with Hasbro and Bento Box Entertainment to make the series. But by 2024, the film and TV rights moved to Sony, thanks to a new deal made by Hasbro,...

Tim Curry to Publish Memoir ‘Vagabond’ in October
Image
Tim Curry will publish Vagabond: A Memoir in hardcover, e-book, and audio book on October 7 via Grand Central Publishing.

The 256-page book serves as a celebration of the actor’s life’s work — from his breakout role as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and his iconic depiction of Pennywise in It to his critically acclaimed role as King Arthur in both the Broadway and West End versions of Spamalot and beyond.

Over the course of five decades and dozens of roles across a variety of mediums, Curry redefined what it meant to be a character actor, portraying heroes and villains alike with complexity, nuance, and a genuine understanding of human darkness. In the process, he also left an indelible imprint on audiences.

His memoirs takes readers behind-the-scenes of his rise to fame from his early beginnings as a military brat to his formative years in boarding school and university,...

When Jim Carrey Lost This Iconic Role To Tom Cruise In The 80s
Image
Which 80s Role Did Jim Carrey Lose To Tom Cruise? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Before Ace Ventura or The Mask made him a ’90s box office king, Jim Carrey almost suited up as a fantasy hero. But in a twist straight out of Hollywood legend, he lost the role to Tom Cruise before Cruise ever felt the need for speed. In the mid-1980s, Carrey was far from a marquee name. He was still grinding it out in stand-up clubs and landing small-screen gigs like The Duck Factory.

His big screen appearances included Once Bitten, a quirky vampire comedy from 1985, and bit roles in films like Peggy Sue Got Married and The Dead Pool. Charisma? Check. Range? Not quite Hollywood-approved. At least, not yet. Tom Cruise, meanwhile, was already heating up.

After breaking out in Risky Business and The Outsiders, he was seen as a rising heartthrob with blockbuster potential. By...

‘It,’ ‘Doctor Sleep’ Limited Edition Prints on Sale Today at Mondo
Image
Mondo will release two limited edition posters based on Stephen King adaptations today, April 3, at 1pm Et.

Rebeca Puebla‘s Doctor Sleep artwork is inspired by the first edition cover of The Shining by Dave Christensen. The 12×18 giclee print is limited to 140 for $50.

“It has been incredible and a real challenge for me to make this Doctor Sleep poster trying to emulate the cover of the original The Shining book,” Puebla said. “I really love this movie as it reflects, in a wonderful way, the spooky continuation of Danny Torrance’s life and the rest of dark and amazing characters created by Stephen King.”

“Mike Flanagan‘s Doctor Sleep had huge shoes to fill as a sequel to one of the greatest books and horror films ever made, both mediums often in opposition of each other. In the spirit of the book vs. film debate, Rebeca Puebla’s poster takes...

Night of the Demons III (1997) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Night of the Demons III? Weird. That must be like one of those Hellraiser sequels that wasn’t originally intended to be a Hellraiser movie but had Doug Bradley pasted into it for 5 minutes to justify it. Wait, it was written by original director Kevin Tenney? Well surely its easy to watch… oh for Pete’s sake, its not even streaming on Tubi. No offense to Tubi at all. I love finding random movies to watch on there but they have everything and even have commentary on the first Night of the Demons. Okay, I knew this movie existed, especially after I did a black sheep on the second entry a few years ago, but until a couple months ago I had never seen it. After watching both the official version and the workprint version (more on that later), I’m ready to move the Black Sheep crown from part...

10 Scariest Animated Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
Just because a movie is animated doesn’t mean it’s all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, some of the most unsettling, eerie, and downright terrifying films ever made are animated. Whether it’s through disturbing character designs, nightmare-inducing villains, or deeply existential themes that hit even harder as you grow up, these movies have left lasting impressions on kids and grown-ups alike.

From spine-chilling stop-motion to traditionally animated nightmares, plenty of movies, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, pushed the boundaries of what “kid-friendly” really means. Whether they scarred you as a child or continue to haunt your dreams as an adult, these movies are sure to have gotten under your skin at some point. Some of them lean into horror outright, while others use their unsettling elements to craft unforgettable, eerie experiences that trickle into your thoughts far beyond childhood.

Sylvester Stallone Called This Comedy The Worst Movie In His Filmography
Image
If you've paid any kind of attention to Sylvester Stallone's film career for any amount of time, you know he's made some absolutely terrible movies. To be fair, some were out of necessity. Prior to becoming a big screen superstar in 1976 with "Rocky," a briefly homeless Stallone starred in a quickie pornographic romance called "The Party at Kitty and Stud's" (which was rereleased post-stardom as "The Italian Stallion"). Around the same time, he also appeared in the low-budget terrorism thriller "No Place to Hide," which was recut as a comedy and dumped into video stores in 1990 with the title "A Man Called... Rainbo."

For the most part, however, Stallone has been the author of his own cinematic misery. After the wild critical and commercial success of "Rocky", the star went on a decade-plus tear during which he could get anything greenlit. At first, he put his newfound box office...

Jim Henson Didn’t Believe That Evil Should Exist in the Muppet Universe
Image
The Muppets’ big-screen adventures tend to feature great villains, from Tim Curry’s Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, to Kermit’s evil doppelganger Constantine in Muppets Most Wanted, to oilman Tex Richman in 2011’s The Muppets — although the latter was obviously only created as part of the Muppets’ secret communist agenda, at least according to Fox News.

The very first Muppet movie, appropriately titled The Muppet Movie, pitted Kermit the Frog against a Col. Sanders-esque fast-food magnate named Doc Hopper, who wanted Kermit to be the face of his fried frog leg franchise.

Hopper, who slaughtered countless frogs that never even got the chance to learn the banjo and/or produce a TV variety show, is an irredeemable crook. But that wasn’t always necessarily the plan. According to Jim Henson: The Biography by Brian Jay Jones, Henson and fellow Muppeteer Frank Oz got into “a...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Seems to Be Eyeing a Comeback at Long Last
Image
Fans are sure to shiver with antici...pation at the rumor that Rocky Horror Picture Show is about to take on new life as a comic book. The beloved musical is rapidly approaching its 50th anniversary and signs are pointing to the infamous and hysterical show being adapted (once again) as a comic.

BleedingCool was the first website to spread word of this potential adaptation. According to a rumor picked up from this year's London Book Fair, fan-favorite writer Magdalene Visaggio, has been tapped by Dark Horse Comics to write Rocky Horror Show #1 this October, in celebration of the musical's 50th anniversary.

Of course, there's no official word just yet as October's a long ways away. But this wouldn't be Visaggio's first brush writing Rocky Horror, as she'd previously contributed to the book of essays Absolute Pleasure: Queer Reflections on Five Messy Decades of Rocky Horror.

April 11 Will Be a Great Day for Garfield Fans
Image
Garfield fans are in for a treat that's almost as good as lasagna. On April 11, the first two live-action Garfield movies will be streaming on Hulu.

In 2004, 20th Century Fox brought Jim Davis' beloved comic strip to the silver screen with Bill Murray portraying the CGI cat. Murray's live-action co-stars included Breckin Meyer as Jon Arbuckle and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Dr. Liz Wilson, with the film's plot chronicling how the overweight and grumpy Garfield's life is thrown upside down when his owner, Jon, adopts a hyperactive young dog named Odie.

Garfield: The Movie ended up being a commercial success for 20th Century Fox, maxing over $200 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million. However, the Bill Murray-led movie based on the popular comic strip didn't do so well with critics or audiences. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, only 14% of critics' responses to the film were positive. Audiences felt similar,...

Didn't Like The Cosmic Final Boss in the 1990’s 'Stephen King's It'? The Cast Didn't Either
Image
It was the late '80s, and talks of adapting Stephen King’s It into a television miniseries were culminating. The novel in question boasted over 1,000 pages and demanded as much screen time as it could get, and broadcasting company ABC allotted two nights. After confirming a premiere date of November 18, 1990, the production took off to meet the deadline. Screenwriter Larry D. Cohen (Carrie) penned night one and director Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III) tackled night two of the miniseries. The casting process was electric, and the creators were ecstatic that Tim Curry would star as the pivotal villain Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Being a part of a Stephen King adaptation was huge, and the excitement was shared by everyone involved. The miniseries brought in an astounding 30 million viewers during its debut, branding it a huge success. Just over 30 years later, its definitive documentary Pennywise: The Story of It covered...

Peter Bart: ‘Mickey 17’ Will Delight Bong-Heads, But The Rest Of The Moviegoing Universe Might Need Convincing
Image
Will filmgoers rally behind space travelers who “hate dying” but keep courting death?

The director who gave us Parasite, a cool, curmudgeonly social comedy, is challenging filmgoers with a big-budget, genre-bending epic titled Mickey 17 that will likely be a tougher sell.

Fans of Bong Joon Ho’s movies will now have to deal with dystopian class warfare spearheaded by a Donald Trump leader (Mark Ruffalo) who disdains “Expendables.” Loud and orange, he has big ambitions for a frozen planet that’s as hospitable as a hockey rink. Jeopardy lurks everywhere: Even sex is death defying.

Mickey 17 is a $120 million satire – “one that may challenge the public mood,” observes one veteran distributor, who readily admits that no one understands the “public mood.” Robert Pattinson adeptly plays Mickey 17 and is resigned to become Mickey 18 too, and beyond, as he’s meticulously “re-printed” after every death.

15 Best Psych Episodes, Ranked
Image
We know, you know that we're telling the truth when we say "Psych" was one of the greatest procedural shows ever made. The USA mystery series followed the case work of private investigators Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster.

Each week, the two man-children -- often in half-reluctant collaboration with a dysfunctional Santa Barbara Police Department -- would use their particular set of skills to bring criminals to justice, in stories that delightfully dumbed-down the overly self-serious crime procedural subgenre to make it work as wacky, irreverent, and subversive comedy.

In anticipation of a potential fourth sequel film from Peacock, we've delved back into the case files to find our favorite mysteries. No deceiving, no bending -- here are the 15 best episodes of Psych, ranked.

‘Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror’ Review: A Slight but Sweet Look at a Cult Movie Powerhouse
Image
At its core, cult phenomenon “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a movie about conservative values versus transgression. The audience surrogates, Brad (asshole!) and Janet (slut!), are two naïve virgins and the living embodiment of the word “stuffy” who are thrown into a world of mad scientist transvestites, hunky Frankensteins, and alien butlers and maids. Sure, the kinky, queer world the two squares fall into is dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun, and “Rocky Horror” makes it clear that it’s also liberating for the young virgins to escape their conservative world, don some fishnet tights, and embrace their inner freak.

“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a documentary that loudly, and proudly, celebrates the freaks and the misfits who have found solace in the rock ‘n roll musical film since its 1975 premiere. And yet, it fits more in the “square” category than it should.

‘Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror’ Review: An Affectionate, Personal Look at the Cult Movie Phenomenon
Image
In our age of instant nostalgia, a big question for any documentarian or oral historian is how soon to take a look back at a beloved property.

Do it too soon and you’ll have more participants available, but with so little distance or reflection that you might as well be making a promotional Epk.

Do it too late and none of your first-hand sources will be available, so you might as well be making a shoebox diorama.

Watching Linus O’Brien’s Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, a new documentary launching out of SXSW, my most frequently thought was that — actual quality of the film notwithstanding — it’s an absolute blessing to be getting this examination of the Rocky Horror phenomenon at this particular moment in time.

Released tied to the 50th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show film, Strange Journey benefits to no small degree from the presence of O’Brien,...

‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Creator on SXSW Documentary About the Musical’s Legacy and Political Relevance: ‘I Weep For America’
Image
It was only supposed to run for a few weeks at a small experimental space upstairs at London’s Royal Court Theatre. But somehow, 50 years after “The Rocky Horror Show” first debuted, it is still attracting crowds. Its passionate fans supported the show during its transfers to the West End and Broadway, as well as after Hollywood beckoned and a film version of the musical was produced. In fact, there’s probably a midnight screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” playing at a theater near you this weekend.

“Nobody thought it was going to be a hit,” admits its author and songwriter Richard O’Brien, an out-of-work actor who combined an interest in science-fiction, B-movies and glam rock into an enduring musical smash. (He also played Riff Raff in the film.) “Nobody was trying to make it big. We were just there to have fun. It’s really just a...

This Beloved Nickelodeon Cartoon Offered a Unique Take on Children's Programming
Image
The dawn of the new millennium was a golden age for Nickelodeon. The iconic children’s entertainment giant has always produced good content, but its turn-of-the-century output was truly some of its best. These years established some of the brand’s most iconic titles, including The Fairly OddParents, Rugrats, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Of course, there were also plenty of “forgotten gems.” These shows may not be as outlandishly lucrative as their more esteemed cousins, but that’s rarely a condemnation of their inherent quality. Shows like Chalk Zone and Rocket Power may not be likely targets for tomorrow’s “brand new” reboot, but they’re still legendary examples of animated brilliance.

Amidst these dusty, overlooked relics of the world’s millennial optimism is Klasky-Csupo’s quirky and colorful The Wild Thornberrys. Like its compatriots, this unique cartoon isn’t often considered part of Nickelodeon’s diamond-tier lineup; most lump it into that iffy “good,...
