‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’: Everything to know about Jennifer Lopez’s return to the Oscar race as new trailer drops
Image
Jennifer Lopez is posed to hustle her way back into the awards race in October. That's when her Sundance-premiering movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, opens to the general public courtesy of Roadside Attractions. A new trailer for the film landed on the world wide web today, offering a longer look at the Bill Condon-directed feature than the teaser that was released earlier in the summer.

Based on the 1993 Broadway musical that was based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel and its 1985 feature Oscar-winning film adaptation, the new Spider Woman earned strong reviews on the festival circuit and awards Lopez a showcase role tailor-made for Oscar season. Here's everything you need to know about the film ahead of its Oct. 10 release date.

What is Kiss of the Spider Woman about?

First things first: no, this isn't an Into the Spider-Verse spin-off. Set in Brazil during the South American country's...

Charlie Sheen Starred in One of Clint Eastwood’s Worst Movies That Almost Tried to Be The Naked Gun
Image
Clint Eastwood almost ran his career, along with that of Charlie Sheen, into the ground with a film titled The Rookie that neither flaunted his macho, gunslinger arc as an actor nor touted his Oscar-winning potential as a director.

In the 1980s, Clint Eastwood found it difficult to park his talents in an industry that was, on one hand, filled with big franchise sequels (T2: Judgment Day and Indiana Jones 3) and, on the other, sci-fi blockbusters (E.T. and Blade Runner). Consequently, he stepped into the ’90s with a buddy-cop flick that was supposed to be easy enough to impress the audience.

Instead, The Rookie has been branded as one of the worst Eastwood movies and an insult to his long-standing career as an auteur and award-winning filmmaker /Film].

‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ at 40: The story behind the groundbreaking Oscar-winning drama
Image
Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Bill Condon’s upcoming movie musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman is heading to theaters on Oct. 10. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, the film is anticipated to be a serious Oscar contender, spinning a tale of human connection between two unlikely prisoners — and the movie star that binds them together.

It’s the second feature film adaptation to spring from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Released on July 26, 1985, Héctor Babenco’s Kiss of the Spider Woman also proved a huge hit with Oscar voters, scoring four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 58th Academy Awards. It made history as one of the first films with overt LGBTQ+ themes to be nominated in both of those major categories.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is, at heart, a long conversation...

IFC Center’s General Manager Picks Favorite Moments from 20 Years in New York City
Image
IFC Center turns 20 this week, and we’re celebrating by turning the clock back to 2005. On our actual birthday, June 17, a special one-day-only anniversary event showcases the four movies that played our opening week – “I Was Born But…,” “Maniac,” “Don’t Look Back,” and “Me and You and Everyone We Know” — all at 2005 prices. Later in the summer, a “20 Films for 20 Years” series will spotlight some key films from IFC Center’s history, with a different movie representing each year we’ve been open.

To mark the anniversary, IndieWire asked me to reflect on some of my personal programming highlights from almost two decades at the theater. There are dozens and dozens, but here are some of the ones that really stick out for me, in roughly chronological order:

David Lynch Introducing “Vertigo”

Jennifer Lopez and Tonatiuh in Kiss of the Spider Woman (2025)
She’s something a little strange. That’s what you notice, that she’s not a woman like all the others…Ahead of the film’s October 10th release, the latest version of Kiss of the Spider Woman has arrived, with Diego Luna, Jennifer Lopez and Tonatiuh leading the Bill Condon-directed film.

‘The Secret Agent’ Review: Wagner Moura Effectively Plays Man Of Mystery In Brazilian Thriller – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho is no stranger to Cannes, having debuted two previous films in Competition beginning with Aquarius in 2016 starring Sonia Braga, so effective as a woman determined not to lose her condo to a demolition, and then grabbing the Jury Prize in 2019 for the surreal western Bacurau (again with Braga), in which a whole village seemingly is disappeared from satellite maps and must fight for its existence. Both of those movies deal thematically with people threatened with losing their way of life, being displaced.

Now his third film in Competition and biggest production yet, The Secret Agent, also might fit into that theme as it centers on a man coming back to a small city in order to get closer to his young son after losing his wife to pneumonia. What he discovers in the film set in...

In the Line Of Fire: Clint Eastwood’s Last Action Film Was Great
Image
Has there ever been a more iconic big-screen presence than Clint Eastwood? I’d be hard-pressed to name one, as while others like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, and maybe Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne – if you go old school – can compare, there’s a lot more to Eastwood than anyone else. How so? Well, while most of his contemporaries were happy just to act in their films, Eastwood became the auteur of his work, directing many of his post-The Outlaw Josey Wales vehicles. When he opted to semi-retire from screen acting, he was able to carry on as a director, and in fact, despite being well into his nineties, he’s still directing movies, with his recent Juror No 2 being a little gem.

However, when In the Line of Fire was made in 1993, Eastwood was at something of a crossroads in his career. For the thirty years prior, starting...

10 Best Sasha Lane Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
There may be no other working American actor as underrated as Sasha Lane in her generation. The 29-year-old Houston, TX native has been acting in movies and TV shows for nearly a decade now, and in that time, she's had relatively few starring roles. But her eye for projects has been consistently refined, and even her smaller performances have left an indelible mark on anyone who's been following her filmography.

It all began with the premiere of Lane's screen acting debut, "American Honey," in the main competition of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where she managed to steal the spotlight even next to such towering, acclaimed performances as Isabelle Huppert in "Elle," Kim Min-hee in "The Handmaiden," Sônia Braga in "Aquarius," Sandra Hüller in "Toni Erdmann," Kristen Stewart in "Personal Shopper," and Ruth Negga in "Loving." Since then, Lane has accrued just under 20 acting credits, with nearly all of those being in deeply interesting projects,...

Look for Jennifer Lopez to be out there on the awards season trail, along with the new discovery in this pic, Tonatiuh, who wows as gay prisoner Molina during a 1980s Argentian dictatorship, an inmate who keeps his cellmate Valentín (Diego Luna) alive with stories about his favorite movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and its actress Ingrid Luna (Lopez). Molina’s stories are portrayed in colorful song and dance. An eight-figure P&a spend is in store to get the word out. Condon is...

Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Nearing Deal With Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate
Image
The new adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman that stars Jennifer Lopez is close to a sale after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and Ld Entertainment are in final negotiations to acquire domestic distribution rights for the musical feature. Diego Luna, Tonatiuh and Tony Dovolani round out the cast for director Bill Condon’s film that hails from Artists Equity and Mohari Media.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is based on playwright Terrence McNally’s stage musical that debuted on Broadway in 1993 and adapted Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Condon penned the script, and the film features music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

The project centers on a political prisoner (Luna), whose cellmate (Tonatiuh) creates a fantasy Hollywood narrative involving his favorite star, Ingrid Luna (Lopez).

Jennifer Lopez's New Musical Praised as the "Role She Was Born to Play"
Image
Jennifer Lopez has never gotten a lot of love from fans or critics when it comes to her acting career, but all that seems to be changing thanks to her most recent performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is getting rave reviews coming out of Sundance this past weekend. Lopez has been nominated for more Golden Raspberry Awards than she has Golden Globes in her 30-year career in Hollywood, but next year's Oscar buzz has already started thanks to director Bill Condon's musical thriller, in which Lopez stars as Ingrid Luna.

Fans and critics have been singing the praises of Lopez since Kiss of the Spider Woman's debut on Jan. 26, with Pete Hammond from Deadline calling it "the role she was born to play," while at the same time mentioning that the movie itself is "a master class in how to find the cinematic soul of...

A Teary Jennifer Lopez Wows Sundance with ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’: ‘I’ve Been Waiting for This Moment My Whole Life’
Image
Dreams do still come true, it seems. On Sunday night in Park City, Utah, the big “hot ticket” screening was the world premiere of Bill Condon’s much-anticipated “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a dazzling big screen adaptation of Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb’s 1992 Broadway musical of the same name (itself a take on Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name). While the story, about a pair of Argentinian prisoners who are brought together during the “Dirty War,” was previously made into a feature film in 1985 with stars William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga, Condon’s film marks the first big screen musical spin on the original material.

And, for star Jennifer Lopez, starring in a musical — her very first, if you can believe it — was the culmination of decades of dreaming. The film, which stars breakout star Tonatiuh as Luis Molina and Diego Luna...

‘Kiss Of The Spider Woman’: World Premiere Of Jennifer Lopez Musical Receives Standing Ovation At Sundance

If Sundance was looking for a way to raise the temperature of this year’s festival they found it Sunday night with Jennifer Lopez and the feature take of the Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, which played a packed Eccles house with plenty of turnaways. Buyers in attendance included Searchlight and Mubi. The movie is up for sale from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity.

Taking the stage, Lopez, filmmaker Bill Condon and big screen discovery Tonatiuh (who plays Molina) received a standing ovation. When Sundance Director Eugene Hernandez said Tonatiuh’s name again on stage, the entire Eccles roared. “What a way to get to know you!” beamed Hernandez.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” an emotional Lopez told the crowd as she remembered watching West Side Story as a kid. She said it was always her goal to star in...

Jennifer Lopez Invites You Into a Musical Web in New 'Kiss of the Spider-Woman' Images
Image
The Kiss of the Spider Woman is not an unfamiliar title but, according to director Bill Condon, the 2025 adaptation, is "something different from anything you’ve seen." Now, Vanity Fair is unveiling a first look at the upcoming movie-musical adaptation. The images give us our first full look at Jennifer Lopez as Ingrid Luna. The movie is based on a stage adaptation of the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. If the title sounds familiar and doesn't ring any bells with that, Héctor Babenco, a Brazilian director, adapted the work in 1985. William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga starred. Hurt won Best Actor Oscar in 1986 for his role as Luis Molina. The movie premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this Sunday.

Stars: Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson, Sônia Braga, Tawfeek Barhom, Maria Caballero, Charles Dance, Billy Nighy, Nicole Sorace | Written by Tim Smith, Arkasha Stevenson, Keith Thomas | Directed by Arkasha Stevenson

Typical. You wait years for a movie about a teenage American nun who becomes mysteriously pregnant when she travels to an Italian nunnery and then two come along at once. Consequently, The First Omen – a prequel to the 1976 horror classic – has had its thunder stolen somewhat by Michael Mohan’s excellent Sydney Sweeney-starring nunsploitation picture Immaculate, but still delivers its fair share of tense atmospherics, jump scares and impressive body horror.

The film begins in 1971, with virginal young American novice Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) travelling to Rome, where she’s met by kindly Cardinal Lawrence (Bill Nighy), before beginning her apprenticeship at the Vizzardeli Orphanage, where she will eventually take her vows. Soon, Margaret’s attention is drawn by Carlita...

‘Motel Destino’: Cannes’ Most Sexually Explicit Movie ‘Would Never Happen in American Cinemas Because There’s So Much Fear and Risk’
Image
Those look for a libido-juicing kick at this year’s Cannes Film Festival surely found it in “Motel Destino,” the sexually explicit erotic thriller from Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz.

Competing in the main competition once again after “Invisible Life” and “Firebrand,” Aïnouz returned to his native Brazil to shoot this perverse psychosexual triangle about the owners of a sex motel along the country’s northeastern Atlantic coast, and the criminal drifter who disrupts their lives. The wild-haired Dayana (Nataly Rocha) operates the Motel Destino with her abusive husband Elias (Fábio Assunção), where she takes up an unhinged affair with Heraldo (Iago Xavier), and amid nonstop sucking and fucking, plot to kill Elias in the grand tradition of the great noirs. Except it’s a noir with a post-Hays Code, liberated twist that has rocked Cannes with its strong, pervasive sexual content, to use the language of the American Motion Picture Association’s ratings board.

How The First Omen Found All Those Creepy Locations [Exclusive]
Image
"The First Omen" was one of the biggest movie surprises of the year. What could've easily been a cheap, lazy cash-in on IP awareness turned out to be an inventive, smart, and surprisingly disturbing horror movie that just happens to be a prequel. As Witney Seibold wrote in his /Film review: "In an age when long-in-the-tooth horror franchises like 'Halloween' and 'The Exorcist' are being tiresomely revived without a trace of creativity, it's refreshing and splendid to see a picture that is thoughtfully menacing, uniquely stylish, deathfully intense, and utterly terrifying. 'The First Omen' is a film of dank, bloody, spittle-flecked dread, made no less powerful by the foregone conclusion."

In "The First Omen," we follow a young novitiate (Nell Tiger Free) who is sent to help at an orphanage in Rome. Once there, she begins to experience terrifying visions that hint at a grand conspiracy involving unspeakable evil.

The First Omen sequel could dig into the mystery of the jackal
Image
On April 5th, 20th Century Studios gave a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – and the movie was surprisingly well-received, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray giving it an 8/10 review and Tyler Nichols writing an article about why it works so well. The movie hasn’t been burning up the box office charts; made on a budget of $30 million, it has only pulled in $36 million so far. But if a sequel were to get the greenlight, director Arkasha Stevenson knows one subject she would want to cover in the follow-up: the mystery of the jackal.

In the original The Omen, we were told that the Antichrist was born of a jackal. The First Omen digs deeper into his parentage, letting us know that it wasn’t quite as simple (although very strange) as it appeared to be in the original movie,...

Mike Flanagan Gives Glowing Review To Horror Prequel That Underperformed At The Box Office
Image
Mike Flanagan praises The First Omen as "wicked, vicious, elegant, beautifully directed, and downright Scary." The film earned an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest for the franchise since the original in 1976. Despite underperforming at the box office, positive reviews, like Flanagan's, may boost the film's success on VOD and streaming.

Mike Flanagan gives a glowing review to The First Omen after it underperformed at the box office. A direct prequel to The Omen from 1976 and the sixth overall film in the franchise, the horror film follows an American woman who is sent to work at a church in Rome and discovers a sinister conspiracy aimed at ushering in the birth of the Antichrist that causes her to question her faith. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson in her feature debut, The First Omen cast includes Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy.

Is The First Omen a Box Office Bomb?
Image
The First Omen is the sixth installment in The Omen franchise, but despite its positive critical reviews, it failed to attract a wide theatrical audience. The disappointing box office performance may be attributed to prequel fatigue, long-gestating lore alterations, and competition from rival horror films. Originally intended for streaming, the prequel's theatrical release raised its profile but has yet to become a true box-office success.

The First Omen, a prequel to the classic 1976 supernatural horror film The Omen, tells the story of a young American woman, a devout nun in training, who uncovers a horrifying conspiracy to facilitate the birth of the Antichrist in Rome, where American diplomat Robert Thorn takes custody of the Antichrist, renamed Damien Thorn, in The Omen.

The First Omen marks the sixth installment in the now nearly 50-year-old The Omen film series, which had been previously dormant since the release of the 2006 The Omen remake.

Why The First Omen Is a Great Horror Prequel
Image
The First Omen surprises audiences with its critical acclaim and unique approach to horror prequels. Stevenson's film stands out by appealing to modern audiences while paying homage to the original Omen. Nell Tiger Free's standout performance as Margaret elevates the film, making it a must-watch for horror fans.

In recent days, a new horror film arrived in theaters that has surprised everyone who has seen it. The First Omen, by director Arkasha Stevenson, was released by 20th Century Studios, the production studio that resulted from Disney's infamous takeover of Fox. The studio isn't often associated with horror films, and in recent times, they've actually stood far from big horror releases that don't go straight to offshoot streaming platforms like Hulu. Well, The First Omen is teaching them a thing or two.

The film has been critically acclaimed. After its initial release in theaters, audiences are raving about it...

Box Office: ‘Godzilla x Kong’ Squashes ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘First Omen’ With $31.7M
Image
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were the monsters with the mostest at the box office this weekend, as Dev Patel‘s much buzzed-about feature directorial debut Monkey Man and supernatural franchise installment The First Omen both opened behind expectations.

Neither genre film ever had a chance of taking away the No. 1 spot from Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong, but had hoped for a bigger slice of the proverbial box office pie. Godzilla, from filmmaker Adam Wingard, is proving to be a significant victory for Josh Grode’s Legendary Pictures on the heels of Dune: Part Two, which is the top-grossing film of the year to date with $660.7 million in global ticket sales through Sunday. And Godzilla is also a big win for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse series, at a time when many franchises are struggling to remain fresh.

Godzila x Kong topped the chart...

Box Office: ‘Godzilla x Kong’ Staying on Top, ‘Monkey Man’ Swings Into Second and ‘The First Omen’ Gets Crossed Up
Image
It’s a primate face-off at the box office this weekend, plus some old-fashioned Antichrist horror on the side. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” looks to stick on top of domestic charts, holding off the opening weekend bows of Universal’s beat-em-up “Monkey Man” and 20th Century Studios’ horror revival “The First Omen.”

That kaiju victory lap probably has less to do with the staying power of “The New Empire” than the strength of its competition though. The blockbuster monster mash earned $8.5 million on Friday, down a steep 77% from its opening day a week ago. “The New Empire” could be eyeing a drop north of 60% across the three-day frame — not a superlatively large decline from a blockbuster’s opening weekend, but still a pretty sizable one. It puts in perspective the impressively slim 44% drop that fellow Legendary production “Dune: Part Two” faced in its sophomore outing.

Review: The First Omen
Image
Since its release in 1976, The Omen has become a horror staple. It spearheaded a new form of horror, specifically the subgenre of "religious horror," into the mainstream, alongside the likes of The Exorcist, Alice, Sweet Alice and Rosemary's Baby. These films dealt with societal decay, loss of faith, paranoia and a general feeling of apocalypse. They may have even served as the precursor to the Satanic Panic that swept the United States and much of the world up until the mid-90s.

The Omen spawned many recognizable tropes, such as the mark of the beast, creepy children, the use and subversion of religious iconography (especially Catholic motifs) and some memorable quotes. "It's all for you!" among them, and another, "Its mother was a jackal!" The latter quote was central to the unnatural origin and birth of the Anti-Christ, Damien.

The First Omen Director on Avoiding Nc-17 and Embracing the Female Body
Image
Grab a pen, film franchise contributors. The new prequel to The Omen (1976) doesn't just go through the motions. Instead, The First Omen makes a grand statement about the times we live in, to thrilling and horrifying effect. It's all thanks to co-writer/director Arkasha Stevenson, who weaves pertinent themes of women's autonomy and reproductive freedom into her darkly subversive tale about the eerie events that transpired and led to the evil yet fictitious Damien's reign. The demonic boy's adoptive parents failed to put an end to his literal evil ways, and a film franchise ultimately spawned from Richard Donner's classic.

Starring Nell Tiger Free, Bill Nighy, and other terrific performers, The First Omen is the latest canonical addition that sets the stage for a sort of parallel storyline that should be further explored and could even run alongside Damien's upbringing. In the meantime, we recently caught up with director...

The First Omen Review
Image
Plot: A young novitiate in Rome (Nell Tiger Free) is warned by an ex-communicated priest (Ralph Ineson) that she’s at the center of a sinister conspiracy at her church dedicated to spawning the anti-Christ.

Review: I’ve always really enjoyed The Omen as a franchise. Even as a kid, I found something about the original trilogy centring around Damien Thorn especially gripping. However, I never had much use for the cheap TV movie sequel (Omen IV: The Awakening) or the scene-for-scene remake, which, despite a game cast, didn’t come close to recapturing the grisly spirit of Richard Donner’s original.

As such, I figured The First Omen would be just another would-be franchise starter, but I have to give 20th Century Studios and Disney credit – they made one hell of a cool horror flick (pun intended). In some ways, it’s a bit like Wonka (bear with...

The First Omen’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Close to the Original Film's
Image
The First Omen registers 77% on the Tomatometer, at the time of this writing, and is within eight percentage points of the original film's Rotten Tomatoes score. The Omen (1976) currently boasts 85% on the Tomatometer against 52 reviews. Most critics praise The First Omen in their reviews, but the film only made $725,000 during its Thursday previews.

Warning! Contains minor Spoilers for The First Omen.

77% is arguably not bad at all for a modern-day movie that’s trying to live up to an iconic horror flick like The Omen (1976). At the time of this writing, that’s the number The First Omen is registering on the Tomatometer. Meanwhile, the Gregory Peck-led classic boasts an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes against 52 reviews. In fact, Peck himself appears in the film courtesy of an old photograph featuring his character, Robert Thorn, near the movie's conclusion.
