Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
Uhf: Michael Richards nearly played his role with a case of Bell’s palsy
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
The same year he was cast to play the iconic character Kramer on the sitcom Seinfeld, Michael Richards could also be seen on the big screen in the comedy Uhf – which was a financial disappointment at the time of its release in the summer of 1989, but has gone on to gather a huge cult following over the years. Musician “Weird Al” Yankovic plays the lead role of George Newman, who is put in charge of the Uhf television channel Channel 62, with Richards in the supporting role of janitor-turned-host Stanley Spadowski… and for a while, it looked like Richards would be playing Stanley while dealing with a case of Bell’s palsy.

As Richards writes in his memoir Entrances and Exits, “Before the Seinfeld pilot, I star in three pilots: Herndon (1983), Help (1984), and Slickers (1985). All three are offered to me. The second pilot, Help, is retooled and called Marblehead Manor, and...

Quentin Tarantino Champions One of His Favorites, 1979’s ‘Winter Kills,’ with a Re-Release — Watch the Trailer
Image
The JFK assassination is parodied in 1979 black comedy “Winter Kills,” which has landed a remastered re-release presented by auteur Quentin Tarantino. IndieWire exclusively shares the trailer for the Rialo Pictures reissue here.

“Winter Kills” is a thinly veiled and hyper-paranoiac take on the JFK assassination starring Jeff Bridges as Nick Kegan, scion of a fabulously wealthy and powerful family headed by patriarch John Huston, as a character based on Joe Kennedy. Nick (Bridges) soon finds himself going down multiple rabbit holes while trying to unravel the conspiracy behind the murder of a U.S. president, his older brother.

Anthony Perkins, Dorothy Malone, Toshiro Mifune, and Elli Wallach also star, as well as an uncredited Elizabeth Taylor who plays a character inspired by JFK’s rumored-to-be mobbed-up mistress Judith Exner. “Winter Kills” is the feature debut of model and Australian actress Belinda Bauer.

A new re-issued release of “Winter Kills” by...

Newswire: St. Vincent to direct a gender-swapped take on The Portrait Of Dorian Gray
Musician, filmmaker, and passionate defender of the word “fuck” Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, has set her feature-film directorial debut, according to Variety. The project will be in the spirit of Clark’s directorial debut, period, a segment in the female-focused horror anthology Xx; as Variety notes with glee, it’s an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic novel The Portrait Of Dorian Gray, but with a woman in the title role. This variation on the theme has been done once before, in the 1983 made-for-tv movie The Sins Of Dorian Gray, starring Belinda Bauer as an actress whose soul is trapped on film instead of in a painting.

Clark’s attempt at ruining Victorian childhoods is still in its earliest stages, but Elle screenwriter David Birke has been hired to write the script. We were mixed on Clark’s segment in Xx, writing in our review: “’The ...

Best Actor Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges: The Hollywood Flashback Interview
2010 Best Actor Academy Award-winner Jeff Bridges.

Editor’s Note: Congratulations to Jeff Bridges for finally getting his props with last night's win for "Crazy Heart"! He's now officially lost the title of "Most Underrated Actor of His Generation." In the spirit of Jeff's victory, we at The Interview thought it appropriate to share this article, which originally appeared in the July 1999 issue of Venice Magazine. Enjoy, and well-done, Jeff!

Building Bridges

By

Alex Simon

Jeff Bridges is arguably the most underrated great American actor since the late Robert Ryan. A performer of incredible range, whose myriad of characterizations over the past 30 years leave the filmgoer with a continued sense of awe and admiration, Bridges' refusal to fit a mold on-screen might be the very thing that has kept him from becoming a conventional movie star. It's also the thing that has kept his work so fascinating, and so brilliant.
