Image
Stargate is heading to Prime Video. The 1994 sci-fi movie from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich will be added to the streaming platform at the start of June.

Beginning June 1, Prime Video subscribers will be able to stream Stargate. While perhaps best known today as a television franchise, Stargate began life on the big screen with the eponymous 1994 sci-fi action film starring Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil, who leads a team through the Stargate — an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole allowing for travel to a similar device elsewhere in the universe — to the planet of Abydos, where they find a society of ancient Egyptian-speaking humans ruled by a space-faring alien posing as the ancient Egyptian sun god Ra. James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors star alongside Russell in the movie.

Stargate was envisioned as the first entry in a trilogy of films that...

“Everyone Wanted To Keep This Brand Alive”: Boss Of Israeli Streamer Izzy Talks Coming Aboard The ‘Shtisel’ Prequel & 2025 Expansion Plans
Image
Exclusive: Fans of Israeli TV were handed an early Chanukah gift on Wednesday when broadcaster Yes and Fremantle revealed they had cooked up a prequel to hit drama series Shtisel.

Just as crucial a cog in the Kugel machine is Izzy, an Israeli streaming platform that has taken rights to the prequel and will air the show from early next year outside of Israel.

“Everyone wanted to keep this brand alive,” said Nati Dinnar, an Israeli TV vet who founded Izzy in 2020 and has since landed global rights to both Kugel and Shtisel.

Kugel has already launched locally on Yes and yet the majority of its global fanbase and industry only learned of its existence 48 hours ago. Set several years earlier than Shtisel, Kugel moves to Antwerp, Belgium, where Shulem Shtisel’s brother Nuchem and his daughter Libi are making their way in life, with plenty bumps along the way.

Image
Global powerhouse Fremantle, international streaming service Izzy, production house Abot Hameiri and Israeli broadcaster Yes have partnered on the distribution of drama series “Kugel,” the prequel to the hit series “Shtisel.”

“Kugel” will launch on Izzy early next year, appealing to fans of two of the main characters of “Shtisel,” Nuchem (Sasson Gabai) and his daughter Libi (Hadas Yaron).

“Shtisel” followed the lives of a tight-knit ultra-Orthodox family in Jerusalem. Previously available in the U.S. on Netflix, all three seasons of “Shtisel” were acquired earlier this year by Amazon Prime Video.

“Kugel” is written by “Shtisel” co-creator Yehonatan Indursky. The commissioning broadcaster is Yes, which holds rights in Israel. Fremantle handles global sales. It is produced by Fremantle, Fremantle’s Abot Hameiri and Menuetto Film. (See the trailer here.)

The series takes places when Libi lived with Nuchem among the ultra-Orthodox community of Antwerp, Belgium, long before she met her future husband,...

The Shtisel universe is expanding.

The smash Israeli series about the trials and tribulations of an orthodox Jewish family is being handed a prequel titled Kugel, following Libi Shtisel in Belgium years before she marries Akiva.

From Shtisel co-creator Yehonatan Indursky, Kugel will launch next year on Israeli net Yes and global streamer Izzy. The show will tell the story of Libi (Hadas Yaron) and her father Nuchem (Sasson Gabai). Nuchem is a charming jewellery dealer, unafraid of bending the rules to make a sale. Why Netflix’s ‘Mary’ Is So Controversial
Image
Released just in time for the Christmas season, Netflix’s Mary purports to be an epic biblical narrative about the story of Mary (Noa Cohen) and the birth of Jesus Christ. The film begins with Mary’s parents praying for a child after years of failed attempts. After both are visited by Archangel Gabriel (Dudley O'Shaughnessy), they are blessed with a daughter who they are told will need to live in the service of God when called upon. As soon as she becomes a teenager, she’s sent away to a temple in order to fulfill that service. After some time, she encounters a young man named Joseph (Ido Tako) who is guided towards her by Gabriel. Subsequently, Mary is betrothed to him by her father. After committing to their engagement, but before their actual marriage, Mary is visited by the same angel and told she is pregnant with God’s child.

Is Netflix’s ‘Mary’ Biblically Accurate?
Image
When Netflix's new film Mary was released, it was met with low reviews from audiences and critics alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rotten critics' score of 27% and an audience score of 43%. Although the film's tone was a main concern for many viewers, the inaccuracies were an even larger flaw for most.

With more than 40 producers credited in the film, including megachurch pastor Joel Osteen, it's a surprise that inaccuracies would be allowed to slip through the cracks. Catholic director D. J. Caruso told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted the film "to ensure authenticity" when defending the decision to cast Israeli actors in the film despite controversy. However, the final product doesn't seem like the team behind Mary actually wanted the film to be that authentic.

5 Reasons You Should Watch “Mary” on Netflix if You Haven’t Already
Image
“Some are born to be great, others have greatness thrust upon them.” This line from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night feels almost tailor-made for Mary, a figure whose greatness was never a matter of choice but divine destiny. So when Netflix’s Mary was announced, the anticipation was high.

What if we told you that one of the most pivotal figures in human history has rarely been fully understood? What if, despite the countless retellings of her story, there was still a deeper layer waiting to be peeled back? That’s what Mary, Netflix’s bold attempt to explore the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, offers—at least in theory.

Director D.J. Caruso Reveals the New Film Script That Brought Vin Diesel's Daughter to Tears
Image
Vin Diesel is (fast and) furiously moving through a bevy of new creative projects. There’s Fast X: Part 2, the second installment of Fast X, which arrives in 2026. Meanwhile, Mary director D.J. Caruso, who worked with Diesel on xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is reportedly taking on another Diesel franchise offering, xXx 4, which has yet to head into production. Recently, Caruso and Diesel haven't hidden their immense appreciation for each other.

In early 2024, Diesel captured attention after posting an Instagram comment about Caruso, mentioning how his daughter, Hania Riley Sinclair, was moved to tears when she read a script Caruso gave him to consider. “My oldest daughter read the script that D.J. sent to me, thinking that it would fall into The Pacifier bracket,” the star wrote. “She cried… I asked her why she cried, and she said because the story of a brother and sister rang true for her,...

'Mary' Review | A Not So Blessed Biblical Epic
Image
A tough-as-nails mother ready to risk it all for humanity? No, it’s not the latest Charlize Theron action thriller; it’s Mary, the ambitious and lavish Netflix production directed by DJ Caruso. Think of this as a coming-of-age biblical epic that tracks the Blessed Mother’s ordeals, as chronicled in the Bible — from being shunned following a miraculous conception to running into hiding. And it wouldn’t be a biblical tale without King Herod (a steely Anthony Hopkins), of course, meaning a devilish pursuit of the newborn baby Jesus, who Mary and Joseph (Noa Cohen and Ido Tako) try to hide. Faith, courage, and determination are big themes. The takeaway is how fierce and faithful a mother can be.

Viewers may not feel that devoted, though. Mary suffers from wanting to cram in too much and, at times, not enough. There’s no mention of the Roman Empire, for instance,...

Netflix's Mary Cast & Character Guide
Image
Netflix's Biblical epic Mary details the life of Mary, mother of Jesus, as she is forced to go into hiding following the birth of her child. While the story itself is well known, the director, D. J. Caruso, hoped to bring new light to Mary's story through depicting it as a coming-of-age tale. The Netflix movie hopes to humanize Mary and show that, before becoming the biblical holy figure that people see her as today, she started out as a normal teenager thrust into a scary situation.

While some of Mary's cast are relative newcomers, the movie does include a few familiar faces as well. Both Mary and Joseph are played by young actors at the beginning of their careers, but Herod and several of Mary's other characters are played by recognizable actors. The Netflix film presents a gripping new take on a well-known figure that leaves audiences with...

Richard Dean Anderson Had Two Conditions To Replace Kurt Russell For Stargate Sg-1
Image
In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil (played by a brilliant Kurt Russell) is as blunt as it gets. When linguist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is invited to assist with the Stargate mission, O'Neil is frank about his disdain for an outsider involved in such a top-secret mission and exhibits little empathy when Jackson is forced to deal with an ancient civilization alone. However, when things go south, O'Neil is the first to dive into the jaws of danger, guns blazing, taking the initiative to save Jackson from the clutches of the malicious alien, Ra (Jaye Davidson). "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole!," he yells before crushing an elevator on top of Ra's men to buy enough time for Jackson to get Sha'uri (Mili Avital) to safety.

Although "Stargate" does not offer anything novel in terms of premise, it is a fun sci-fi adventure that...

Exclusive: Roland Emmerich says Stargate franchise rights issues are too complicated to deal with
Image
Back in 1994, writer/director Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin brought us the sci-fi adventure film Stargate, a box office hit that launched a franchise, being followed by multiple TV shows, books, comic books, video games, and direct-to-video features. The most popular of those follow-ups was the TV series Stargate Sg-1, which ran for ten seasons and then wrapped up with the aforementioned Dtv movies. It’s been a while since we got any new Stargate to watch, though – and not for lack of trying. Back in 2014, it was announced that Emmerich and Devlin would be rebooting the franchise with a new trilogy of films, starting the story over again from the beginning and tell it to its completion. Then developed the idea for a couple of years, but then it all fell apart. Last year, we learned that Stargate is one of the properties Amazon is looking to revive now that they required MGM,...

Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Stargate Reboot Will Be a Trilogy Reveals Roland Emmerich
Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Stargate was a moderate hit for MGM back in 1994, bringing in $196 million at the worldwide box office. It never got a sequel, instead spawning a number of syndicated television spin-offs. That wasn't the original plan, though, as director and co-writer of the movie explains in a new interview.

Roland Emmerich claims he always had a trilogy in mind for the sci-fi epic, but that never came to fruition. While he is planning direct sequels to his other sci-fi hit Independence Day, he thinks its impossible to do the same with Stargate, as the original story's continuation needs to be immediate and the actors are far too old to return now.

Instead, the director is planning a whole new reboot that will consist of three film's bringing his original trilogy plans to the screen for the first time. This is what Roland Emmerich told Digital Spy about his plans to keep working in the Stargate universe.

'Law & Order: Svu': Cast members new and old close book on 300th episode
In the cottage industry that was "Law & Order," one show remains: "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

And this alone proves procedural shows can shine. Stories make sense, writing is tight, and actors are sharp. The result is a gritty drama celebrating its 300th episode Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Though the show shoots all over New York, its home base is a cavernous studio on a Hudson River pier. Here, actors, directors and producers speak with Zap2it while shooting the milestone episode.

This plot, as expected, deals with an excruciating topic -- kidnapping. As a dad bends down to retrieve a $20 bill on a subway platform, a stranger snatches his 7-year-old son and jumps onto a departing train.

The cops are off and running, stopping at nothing until they find the perps. Three actors have starred on the show since the 1999 premiere: Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek as Detectives Olivia...

'Svu' Past Haunts Olivia In 300th Episode
Mariska Hargitay
An old case is coming back to haunt Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) in the 300th episode of "Law & Order: Svu." How old? It's from the show's first episode thirteen years ago.

"Svu" is celebrating the milestone by remembering the past. The episode will be focused on original players Hargitay, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek.

“I thought, if we’re doing a 300th episode, it’d be nice to have some callbacks to the first episode. So we tried to do that a couple of different ways,” Leight told TVLine.

The episode will also feature many actors who appeared in the series' first episode, but they'll be playing different roles. Here's how NBC describes the episode:

In The Series' 300Th Episode, A Child Abduction Investigation Re-opens The Thirteen Year-old Cold Case Of Another Missing Boy In the series' landmark 300th episode, a young boy from Morningside Heights is kidnapped while in the care of his father,...

'666 Park Avenue' preview: 5 things to expect from 'Murmurations'
It's time for a visit to our favorite NYC address -- "666 Park Avenue" gears up for its second episode this Sunday. While a pilot tees up a story, episode 2 is the show's chance to hit a real home run and get us truly hooked... and "666 Park" has done it. Here are five things to expect from tonight's chilling second episode!

1. A group of starlings is called a murmuration... and expect a lot of birds in this episode. "I got, like, Tippi Hedren attacked!" Jane (Rachael Taylor) tells Henry (Dave Annable) -- and she's not exaggerating. But our favorite teenage clairvoyant warns Jane, "Don't mess with the birds. They're part of the Drake." People should probably learn to listen to Nona (Samantha Logan).

2. Henry is increasingly adorable. There are a few key mentions of the fact that Henry and Jane are not married, which makes us a little nervous, because we're...

Exclusive Law & Order: Svu Preview: Milestone Episode Will Reward Sharp-Eyed Fans
Warren Leight
In the criminal justice-on-tv system, few procedurals have achieved as many episodes as Law & Order: Svu. This is its 300th story.

When NBC’s Svu airs its 300th episode on Oct. 24, showrunner Warren Leight says fans should expect to see some familiar faces.

But let’s get this out of the way now: Christopher Meloni, who left the show last year, won’t reprise his role of Det. Elliot Stabler. Diehard fans will however be treated to an hour that showcases three members of the original cast – Mariska Hargitay, Dann Florek and Richard Belzer – and rewards those who’ve been watching from the start.

Independence Day 2 Is Moving Forward Says Writer Dean Devlin
Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Back in February 2011, director Roland Emmerich revealed that he had not even started the script for Independence Day 2. Today, the filmmaker's Independence Day co-writer Dean Devlin said they finally have a story locked in that they want to make.

"I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we're very excited about the idea of doing it. Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that's gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go."

The writer-producer also talked about how he didn't want to make a sequel for so many years, to honor the experience of making the first movie.

"We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still...

Santa Barbara International Film FestivalNorma Prods./EZ Films

SANTA BARBARA -- East meets the Western Wall in "Noodle", an engaging odd-couple comedy about a widowed El Al flight attendant whose deported Chinese cleaning lady leaves her with a little souvenir in the form of her young son. It recently screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Although such higher-profile Israeli imports as "The Band's Visit" and "Jellyfish" have been receiving recent attention, "Noodle", which also has been making the film fest rounds (it nabbed the Jury Special Grand Prize honors at the Montreal World Film Festival), is the kind of universal crowd-pleaser that works as effectively in English as it does in Hebrew and Mandarin.

In other words, it should eventually find its way to a domestic distributor, especially considering its American remake potential.

Given that the melancholy Miri (Mili Avital) has in fact lost two husbands to combat, it's understandable that she has shut herself off emotionally rather than risking being hurt again.

There's no shortage of distraction in her crowded Tel Aviv apartment, which she shares with her judgmental, sarcastic sister, Gila (a scene-stealing Anat Waxman, who took home an Israeli Academy Award for her performance), whose own marriage to Miri's supportive colleague, Izzy (Alon Aboutboul), is seriously deteriorating.

But though Miri, 39, leads a worldly existence thanks to her globe-trotting job, she finds herself at loose ends when her maid asks her to watch her withdrawn 6-year-old son (the expressive Baoqui Chen) for an hour but never returns to fetch him.

It turns out the illegal immigrant was deported back to Beijing. The boy knows little Hebrew and even less English, but ultimately the two manage to find a way into each other's hearts.

Formulaic stuff, to be sure, but when done as competently as "Noodle", it's a formula that can't miss.

Directing from a script written with Shemi Yarhin, Ayelet Menahemi keeps everything moving at a nimble pace while holding the sentimental aspect in check thanks to the ample humor, especially where the witty Waxman is concerned.

Her dysfunctional sibling relationship with Avital lends the picture a sassy bite, even as the bond between herself and the boy she calls "Noodle" (which is at least a bit better than his earlier, decidedly un-PC nickname, Mao Tse-tung) follows a comfortably well-traveled path.

Warren sets table for indie 'Eat'
Lesley Ann Warren
NEW YORK -- Lesley Ann Warren is teaming with an ensemble cast that includes Jack Klugman, Michael Lerner, Shiri Appleby and Mili Avital for Twin Falls Idaho producer Steven J. Wolfe's indie feature When Do We Eat. Eat revolves around a Passover seder at which the family patriarch is slipped a dose of Ecstasy by one of his kids, "igniting conflict and chaos on the way to healing and redemption," the filmmakers said. The comedy -- by helmer Salvador Litvak -- also features Ben Feldman, Max Greenfield, Adam Lamberg, Meredith Scott Lynn and Cynda Williams. Nina Davidovich Litvak penned the screenplay. Amy Salko Robertson is serving as co-producer. Said Wolfe: "The fun of this film was putting together the perfect dysfunctional family. When you combine such well-respected actors as Michael Lerner, Lesley Ann Warren and the legendary Jack Klugman with such an unbelievably gifted ensemble, the humor and comic timing on the set each day makes it hard to feel like you're really at work." The film is shooting in Los Angeles. Warren is repped by Innovative Artists and Acronym Entertainment.
