In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. For Eli Roth in spring, however, his fancies tend to turn darker, more menacingly humorous, and toward the more bloodily outrageous. Take his plans for March 21. That’s when the horror film director-writer will be putting out the first release of his collaboration with the Italian soundtrack label Cam Sugar, “Eli Roth’s Red Light Disco: Dancefloor Seductions From Italian Sexploitation Cinema,” which will be distributed through Universal Music.
March 21 is also the day that Roth begins offering “stock” to his rabid fanbase in what he calls his independent “mini-studio,” the Horror Section, in partnership with the investing platform Republic.
An obsessive when it comes to music and film — be it admiration for the currency of horror filmmakers, his own slasher cinematic catalog, or the “commedia sexy all’italiana” soundtracks of the 1970s and early 1980s...

The 70s were a great decade for surrealistic motives and imagery in genre films—including such incredible gems as Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, Louis Malle's Black Moon and Dario Argento's Suspiria. And then came another great example of surrealist cinema out of Eastern Europe in the form of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Directed by Jaromil Jires, it was a part of the Czechoslovakian New Wave, but came off as avant-garde and daring even for this pretty liberated movement. The film did face its fair share of obstacles, but ended up reaching a worldwide audience that had seen many versions of a coming-of-age story by that time. However, none of them tackled this topic like this: depicting the weird place between innocent childhood and inevitable adulthood, specifically shown through the perspective of female experience, in such an uncompromisingly surreal way.

In 2014, It Follows gained notoriety among horror fans and critics for its suspense and impressive visuals. Over a decade later, It Follows has retained the praise and admiration of an audience that can be divisive and finicky about the offerings they’re presented with. Director David Robert Mitchell tapped into the vein of many standard slasher and horror tropes and, in many ways, went completely against them in a film that thrives on suspense, atmosphere, remarkable cinematography, and a commentary on sexual promiscuity that hadn't been seen since Shivers by David Cronenberg.
It Follows can almost be seen as the definitive anti-slasher film of the modern era. Sacrificing visceral effects and sensationalized death in favor of connecting the audience to the characters through dissonance and reinforcing the more subtle horror of what one doesn’t see. The slasher genre, which was rather basic and took delight in punishing teenagers for promiscuity and drug use,...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival. “Ash” opens in theaters Friday, March 21.
Usually, when someone says a movie is “all vibes,” they mean it as an insult. But vibes can accomplish some wonderful things: Just ask Alejandro Jodorowsky, Dario Argento, Amy Seimetz, Panos Cosmatos, and now Flying Lotus. Born Steven D. Bingley-Ellison, the musician and record producer claims his place in the pantheon of vibes-based filmmakers with “Ash,” a pummeling psychedelic sci-fi freakout that one doesn’t watch so much as experience.
Don’t let the green mist tinged with white lightning and rotating cosmic orifices fool you, however: Ingesting psychedelic drugs is not recommended before watching this film. Like Brandon Cronenberg’s “Possessor,” “Ash” makes extensive use of cut-ins that violently tear through the frame, jarring the audience with nightmarish imagery that’s disarming under normal circumstances and probably soul-searingly terrifying...

If one were to describe Suspiria, the phrase "a nightmare etched in a stained-glass window" would be appropriate. Dario Argento's 1977 film exists in a class almost entirely on its own. The director, who, up until that particular point in his career, had almost exclusively done crime thrillers such as The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red and also had a brief foray into black comedy with The Five Days in Milan, entered the realm of supernatural horror. Co-written by Daria Nicolodi and featuring a soundtrack from long-time collaborators Goblin, Suspiria weaves a spell over its audience and takes them on a journey of kaleidoscopic imagery behind the walls of an enigmatic location.
At its core, Suspiria is a fairy tale, with Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) assuming the mantle of Snow White and embarking on a treacherous path with forces beyond her control wreaking havoc all around her.

The Academy Award for Best Makeup is one of the youngest Oscars. It was first handed out in 1981, one year after the Academy took heat for not having a specific award that could recognize Christopher Tucker's remarkable work for David Lynch's "The Elephant Man." Really, though, there had been mounting pressure on the Academy to honor makeup effects since the early 1970s, when Dick Smith helped Marlon Brando become Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" and transformed young Linda Blair into a demon in "The Exorcist."
The first Oscar for Best Makeup went to the great Rick Baker for "An American Werewolf in London," and it felt like validation for horror fans the world over. Our genre would probably never be deemed worthy of major Oscars, but here was a category that it would likely own for decades to come, because no one was doing more revolutionary work...

Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is known for ultraviolent, hyper-stylized spectacles that are among the greatest genre films ever made. His most excitingly bizarre effort is easily 1985's Phenomena, starring Jennifer Connelly as a schoolgirl with a secret straight out of a Stephen King story. The legendary Italian production company Titanus has just announced their intention to turn the story into a TV series — which, if done well, could be very exciting for fans of Stranger Things and Yellowjackets.
In Phenomena, a savage serial killer stalks the students of a Swiss boarding school, and teen outcast Jennifer Connelly has one major line of defense: her psychic connection to insects. Her power helps her close in on the murderer and navigate the perils of private school, all in the course of a feature film — but a series-length expansion of this unique story could be the perfect replacement for Stranger Things after its 2025 finale.

Many fans of the genre will vehemently argue that Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West is the greatest spaghetti western ever made. Audiences will soon have the opportunity to revisit the classic film on a free streaming platform.
Once Upon a Time in the West will arrive on Tubi on March 1. The legendary movie stars the iconic Charles Bronson opposite Henry Fonda's villain. The revenge-western follows Bronson's character, Harmonica (a role originally intended for Clint Eastwood), as he tracks down Fonda's outlaw Frank to right a past wrong. The movie's ensemble includes Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards, Gabriele Ferzetti, Paolo Stoppa, Marco Zuanelli, Keenan Wynn, Frank Wolff, Lionel Stander, Woody Strode, Jack Elam, Al Mulock, Benito Stefanelli and Aldo Sambrell.

Back in 1985, legendary genre filmmaker Dario Argento brought the world a movie called Phenomena (watch it Here), which was drastically recut and retitled Creepers for its release in the U.S. and the U.K. That one one doesn’t get mentioned as often as some of Argento’s other films, but how can you go wrong with a movie that has Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasence, and a chimpanzee? The writing duo of Nicola Guaglianone and Menotti are apparently fans, as they were planning to develop a sequel to the film… but now, Variety reports, their idea has evolved into “a long-form TV series that would bring new life to the original’s narrative.” Phenomena: The Series is now set up at Titanus Production, who are taking the project to the international festival Series Mania to participate in the Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, promising to “captivate potential partners with its...

Dario Argento’s Italian horror classic Phenomena (also known as Creepers) is headed to the small screen, with Variety reporting that Italy’s Titanus Production is behind the series.
Phenomena: The Series is said to “reimagine” the world of Dario Argento’s 1985 horror movie, delivering “a unique blend of supernatural intrigue and high-stakes drama.”
From writers and creators Nicola Guaglianone and Menotti, the series “follows Jennifer Corvino, an American student at a fencing academy in the glamorous Dolomites, who harbors a secret psychic link with insects. As Jennifer navigates the challenges of being the new girl at school, she must also confront a series of brutal murders.
“With her unique abilities, Jennifer must learn to harness her power to stop the killer, save her comrades, and survive.”

Positive or not, all critical appraisals of Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s films inevitably land on the same talking point: their inordinate cinephilia. Rightly so: the Belgian duo’s filmography––an oeuvre now spanning four features and a handful of shorts––teems with nods to a seemingly endless cascade of Italian giallos from the likes of Mario Bava, Sergio Martino, and Dario Argento. You can call that an act of “cinematic rehabilitation,” as Justin Chang once wrote in his review of Let the Corpses Tan––though perhaps that’s only apt to ring true if you think that particular blend of hyper-stylized pulp needs rehabilitating in the first place. Hence the rather simplistic argument: fans of the classics Cattet and Forzani invoke will undoubtedly relish their works while everyone else likely writes them off as hollow tributes––or, to borrow from Stephen Holden’s far less generous take on their 2009 Amer,...

It stands to reason that genre film lovers would make some of the best genre films. Of course, that's not a hard and fast rule — some fans-turned-filmmakers can become so blinded by their love of the movies that inspire them that they end up making a thinly veiled, watered-down version of what's come before. Yet when you're dealing with a filmmaker who has a keen creative sensibility and knows how to throw all their influences into a blender in order to come out with something that feels fresh yet familiar, then you're hitting that special sweet spot of genre cinema bliss.
Hitting that sweet spot is exactly what director Scott Derrickson has done with "The Gorge," a movie which is a veritable potpourri of genres, tones, and influences, all coming together in a way that's immensely satisfying. Derrickson has made a career out of proving his genre bonafides several times over,...

Wildly unpredictable, visually gorgeous, and occasionally gruesome, the German animated feature Felidae is a surreal amalgam of gothic horror and noir-tinged mystery that’s definitely not for the kiddies. The film is rife with delirious dream imagery and unrestrained depictions of sadistic medical experiments, murder, and mutilation. Not to mention that, per its feline-centric title, all the central characters are cats. Felidae is the result of what might happen if a giallo director like Dario Argento took a whack at directing The Secret of Nimh.

The horror genre has not been universally held in high regard since its inception, often seen as sensational and problematic, sparking the ire of religious and political groups. This attitude toward the genre has softened to become more socially acceptable with time, but many big-name Hollywood actors have seemingly avoided participating in it throughout their careers. Or they, in the case of Brad Pitt (Cutting Class) and Tom Hanks (He Knows You're Alone), have made their major debut in the genre but quickly moved away from it. These early performances offer a fascinating glimpse at the actors in a genre they are not known for, and some are quite good. However, Kevin Costner managed to star in one embarrassingly bad horror film he would rather forget.

When John Carpenter‘s “They Live” was released in 1988, it became an instant favorite among sci-fi enthusiasts for its sly, scary tale of aliens controlling us via subliminal messages that could be consciously perceived only by wearing special sunglasses. Carpenter intended the film as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unrestrained capitalism, a theme that has only gained increased resonance in the 37 years since he made it.
The enduring popularity of “They Live” among genre fans has yielded a number of special edition releases on physical media over the years, and now there’s an especially enticing one for Carpenter aficionados looking to simulate the way they might have first experienced “They Live” back in the 1990s: a new widescreen VHS version from the UK’s Vice Press Home Video.

Last weekend, we celebrated 10 years of fears at the 10th annual Tampa Bay Screams horror convention. Our afternoon was spent at the Occ Roadhouse and Museum in Clearwater, Florida. Despite the rainy, chilly, weather the pavilion hosting the dealer’s dungeon, panel stage, and film festival was lively and attendees were in good spirits.
While last year’s convention showed the resilience of the Tampa Bay horror communities in the face of seemingly endless budget cuts, this year radiated a sense of confidence and air of “we aren’t going anywhere.” After the Tampa Bay area was hit with two devastating hurricanes in late 2024, events like this are more important than ever as they bolster relationships and support systems in the arts community.

Killer Collectibles highlights five of the most exciting new horror products announced each and every week, from toys and apparel to artwork, records, and much more.
Here are the coolest horror collectibles unveiled this week!
John Carpenter, Dario Argento, David Lynch Beanies from Inked Up Merch
Many filmmakers have a trademark, but John Carpenter, Dario Argento, and David Lynch are among the few directors that have a signature font.
Inked Up Merch embroidered their “Directed By” credits from Halloween, Suspiria, and “Twin Peaks,” respectively, on beanies. They’re $18 each.
Jennifer’s Body Shirt from Cavity Colors
As much as I love ostentatious horror garb, I also appreciate subtle references that only hardcore fans will catch.
Cavity Colors’ Aaron Crawford created a shirt for Low Shoulder, the fictional band from Jennifer’s Body, that captures scrappy indie rock style circa 2009.
T-shirts ($30) and Comfort Colors tees ($34) are up for pre-orders until January...

Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

In a pivotal scene from Dario Argento's thriller, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Sam Dalmas is helpless as he stands behind a glass door, watching a victim writhing in agony from what appears to have been an attempted murder. The aspect of voyeurism is closely tied to the thriller, especially in classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. Sliver, released in 1993 during the short-lived run of erotic thrillers that found varying levels of success following Basic Instinct, encompassed themes of voyeurism and obsession that have always been prominent in the genre.
Dismissed by many critics at the time of its release, Sliver is one of many erotic thrillers that deserves far more praise than ridicule. Some who had seen Sharon Stone's performance as femme fatale Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct were taken aback by what some described as a more "passive" role. While Stone's portrayal of...

This article will not be an attack on Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic "Suspiria." Argento's film is, and ever shall be, one of the most exhilaratingly beautiful horror films ever made. The director's bold use of bright colors, elaborate production design, and — most importantly — music (by Italian prog rock band Goblin), turned "Suspiria" from a simple tale of witches and dancers into a nightmarish phantasmagoria of operatic proportions. Few films could ever hope to match the visual excitement, predatory camera movements, and dreamlike imagery of Argento, and several scenes have burned their way into the subconscious minds of horror fans everywhere. The eyeballs hovering just outside a victim's window. The swooping camera, the Pov of a demonic bird. The woman who falls into a pool of razor wire. The half-seen silhouette of the witch queen. The breaking stained glass. The knife cutting directly into a human heart. These are...

Mikey Madison is entering the New Year with yet another accolade: the National Board of Review's Breakthrough Performance Award, which she received at their Awards Gala on January 7th. The actor's performance in Sean Baker's newest film, Anora, has continued to receive acclaim, as the 2024 film has topped numerous lists as one of the best films of the year. As Madison looks toward the future of her career, she has also revealed which directors she would like to work with next.
In an interview with IndieWire after receiving the award mentioned above, Madison discussed which directors she would like to work with next. She said, “I love Alice Rohrwacher. I say her name a lot. I love Luca Guadagnino; I would just pass out.” Guadagnino has been receiving plenty of award attention of his own for two films he also released this past year: Challengers in April and Queer in December.

Welp, it’s January. That special time of year where everyone is simultaneously recovering from the holidays and trying to kick off the new year by putting their best foot forward. TV shows that have been on break will soon return and mid-season premieres quickly follow thereafter, but for film, January is often looked at as slow period for new releases, with offerings like “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man,” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” being unveiled. Films that have had awards-qualifying runs like Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths” and Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” will also expand wider, boosting their profiles in time for Oscar voting, but generally, there’s not much going on to excite the average movie-goer this month. So what better time to say, “Out with the new, in with the old!”

Since the earliest days of cinema, audiences have flocked to theaters to watch the daring tales of gunslingers and pioneers. It's no surprise that the genre of Westerns has withstood the test of time. However, modern audiences may not realize that many of the earliest entries into the genre are just as entertaining now as they were when they were made.
Westerns are typically set in the developing frontier of the American Old West in the late eighteen hundreds. The stories tend to share trademark elements like gun-toting cowboys, nefarious outlaws, and gruff outsiders in need of redemption. The most important Westerns helped establish the themes and tropes that are central to the legacy of film. And decades later, they still make an absolutely awesome watch.

While it might not seem very Christmas-y, Robert Eggers’ horror remake “Nosferatu” does partly take place at Christmas, which is a very unhappy holiday for all involved. And since the movie opened on Dec. 25, you can also spend your own Christmas break watching it.
Naturally, horror and holidays go together like, well… The Grinch and the town of Whoville. Here’s a few of the better genre offerings with maximum — and frightfully merry — mayhem.
Plus, there’s no end of killer Santa movies, including “Violent Night” with David Harbour and one where a robotic Santa run amok, if those are more to your liking. But for now, check out our list, below:

After the release of Rawhead Rex, a film adapted from a short story by Clive Barker in The Books of Blood, the author was so enraged at the result that he decided to direct the next adaptation of his work. In 1987, Barker would helm the production of Hellraiser. Based on his novella, The Hellbound Heart, Hellraiser would capture the minds and imaginations of horror fans and simultaneously introduce the world to the Cenobites (aka The Order of the Gash), the enigmatic puzzle box known as lament configuration and a mythology that still permeates today. Hellraiser is sometimes grouped among some of the other prominent slasher films of the time due to some overlooking many of the subtle intricacies of Barker's film that extend far beyond the limitations of horror.
Sex and death were integral to many slasher titles, but their utilization was for entertainment rather than as an integral part of the overarching narrative.

The 1970s were a great decade for film, and some classics gripped their audience from the very first scene. Directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Dario Argento and Steven Spielberg all produced some iconic moments before their stories really got going. There have been great opening scenes in hundreds of movies, but the 1970s may have produced more than the average decade.
Opening scenes can set the atmosphere for a movie from the very first minute, as well as grabbing the audience's attention. Some directors use this opportunity to introduce their main characters in interesting ways, like how The Godfather focuses on Vito Corleone, or how Enter the Dragon gives Bruce Lee a chance to show off his martial arts skills early on. A good opening scene can get an audience on board with a movie in an instant.

Silent Night, Deadly Night, one of many slasher films that were prominent throughout the 1980s, might never have achieved widespread notoriety and recognition had it not been for the outrage from protesters who heavily objected to Santa Claus, a beloved holiday figure, being tied to such a violent film. Theaters were picketed by outraged parents and even Gene Siskel remarked that the filmmakers were profiting from "blood money." As was the case with the Pmrc hearings held the same decade regarding the lyrical themes of many musical artists, the controversy only piqued public curiosity. Thanks to the advent of home video, Silent Night, Deadly Night was soon viewed by anyone who had a penchant for horror films and access to a Vcr.

There’s a moment in John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian that always gets to me. It’s that scene right before the final battle when Conan prays to his Cimmerian god and states that no one will remember who he and his companion were – the only thing that matters is that, in that moment, two stood against many. From the battle of Thermopylae to Black Hawk Down, the idea of a small group standing their ground against an overwhelming force is one of the most compelling setups in all of fiction, and this also applies to the horror genre.
Many of our favorite scary stories borrow from this same mythological source, which is why there are countless horror movies about small groups of survivors attempting to defend an isolated location from evil invaders. And in honor of what we’ve now come to know as “Siege Films,” we’ve decided...

These days, its pretty commonplace for directors to make cameo appearances in their own movies, but whats sometimes more interesting is when they opt to show up in other filmmakers' releases. This represents a level of respect and collaboration between different artists and highlights that even in the cutthroat world of Hollywood filmmaking, plenty of directors are on friendly enough terms with one another to pop up in each other's films. While these are often brief cameo appearances, directors have occasionally gained more significant secondary roles in their competitors' films.
Some of the greatest directors of all time have taken a break from their busy schedules on set to portray characters in other auteurs' works. This can be a thrilling change of pace, as directors normally associated with one genre have a surprise appearance in something thats the total opposite of the work theyve become known for. Italian indie thriller “The Contract,” starring Kevin Spacey as a character named “The Devil,” is set to world premiere at the Cairo Film Festival this week, without Spacey on the red carpet in the Egyptian capital’s Opera House.
In the film, Spacey plays a role that has been described in promotional materials as somewhat akin to Al Pacino’s role in “Devil’s Advocate”– or as Satan who takes the guise of a human lawyer. The tagline of the rather rudimentary poster for “The Contract” is “When Hell Surrounds You The Devil Is Your Last Hope.”
In the trailer, for what looks like a low-budget TV movie, Spacey’s character, is seen screaming lines such as: “I can feel it when they lie to me on purpose, and I go crazy!” and “I don’t care about the past, it’s all long gone!”

Ever since those iconic orchestral stings accompanied the knife in Hitchcocks Psycho, music has been an indispensable tool in the horror maker's toolkit. Countless directors would turn to that same orchestral style for their own films, but legendary Italian director Dario Argento would throw out the playbook and go for something completely different. Starting with his landmark Giallo Deep Red, Argento employed none other than progressive rockers Goblin to score the breadth of his classic catalog. Goblin was not just a novel choice, but a defining feature of Italian horror during the 1970s, being imitated by many, and utilized by greats like George A. Romero in his essential zombie classic, Dawn of the Dead. The unlikely film composers in Goblin combined brilliant musicianship with relentless creativity and revolutionized horror movie music, opening the door for future iconoclasts like John Carpenter.

Slasher movies are generally considered to be among the more disreputable horror film subgenres. They can be misogynistic, punishing women for their sexuality while also appealing to viewers’ most prurient, voyeuristic impulses: celebrating the male gaze while damning the objects of that gaze except for a virginal “Final Girl.” But slasher movies can veer the closest to true-crime of any of the horror subgenres, meaning that its issues of representation often say as much about an audience that wants to consume beastly criminality as packaged narrative, as it does the filmmakers who deliver them to us.
