Last year, veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr, who got his acting start in Broadway productions back in 1950s (including Take a Giant Step and a 1959 production of A Raisin in the Sun where he shared the stage with Sidney Poitier), passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in this, and became the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award in that category in the process. Next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket,...

A Hulu series that is loosely based on the 1987 Dennis Hopper movie, Black Widow, has added two new stars to its cast. The neo-noir thriller starred Debra Winger and Theresa Russell as Alexandra and Catherine. Alexandra works for the Justice Department and begins pursuing Catherine after she discovers Catherine is marrying and killing wealthy men to inherit their money. Catherine goes by several aliases and alters her appearance with each new marriage. The upcoming Liz Meriwether series has already cast Emmy Rossum as the lead FBI agent.
Now, Variety is reporting that Lola Petticrew and Scott McNairy have joined the show. Petticrew has been cast as Catherine, who will be “a killer with a complicated past targeting wealthy men and running from the NYPD and FBI.” McNairy will play Danny, described as an “NYPD Homicide Detective who’s been at it too long. Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with "Urban Cowboy" and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for "Officer" and "Terms"). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger's characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993's "A Dangerous Woman" as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993's "Shadowlands." However, after 1995's romantic comedy "Forget Paris," Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about the great Debra Winger! Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator.
We discuss Winger’s stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There’s also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette’s documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. The motivation of the piece was partly motivated by Winger’s exodus from the business for over half a decade in the mid-1990s.
There’s also conversation about Shirley MacLaine’s 1984 Oscars speech, Tom Berenger being...

Shirley MacLaine is the Oscar-winning performer who has made dozens of movies in her 60-plus year career, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let's take a look back at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, MacLaine is the older sister of Warren Beatty, proving that acting talent must run in the family. She made her screen debut with Alfred Hitchcock's "The Trouble with Harry" (1955) when she was just 21 years old. Her first Oscar nomination came three years later: Best Actress for "Some Came Running" (1958).
MacLaine would compete four more times at the Oscars unsuccessfully: three for Best Actress, once for Best Documentary Feature ("The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir" in 1975). She finally struck gold with James L. Brooks' comedic drama "Terms of Endearment" (1983), playing a controlling mother who clashes with her free-spirited daughter (Debra Winger). James L. Brooks is detailing the advice he received from an acclaimed producer after making his directorial debut with “Terms of Endearment.” Brooks’ first feature went on to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson, and Best Actress for Shirley MacLaine at the Oscars. After his big night, Brooks apparently was “allowed” to “bomb” his next two films.
“Success can be a demon,” Brooks told The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his upcoming feature “Ella McCay” starring Emma Mackey and Jamie Lee Curtis. “I had an awareness of it and after it happened, I went out and had this great year — maybe the best year. I asked this friend of mine — a hardened producer of many pictures — how many bombs I would be allowed after ‘Terms of Endearment.’ He said, ‘I think you get two.'”
Brooks took that advice and set out to “experiment” with filmmaking.

Martin Scorsese, Jane Campion and Wes Anderson are among the signees of an appeal to stave off the impending threat that a substantial portion of Rome’s movie theaters could be converted into shopping centers and supermarkets under proposed regional legislation.
Alarm over the future of the Eternal City’s cinemas was prompted last month after asset management companies Colliers Global Investors and Wrm Capital won a Rome real estate bankruptcy auction and acquired nine movie theaters for a reported €50 million ($52 million).
Some of these venues, such as the city’s central Cinema Adriano multiplex, are fully operational, while others have long been shuttered. The person behind the fund is believed to be Italian-British financier Raffaele Mincione.

Among the all-time great years for cinema, few can boast the murderer's row of titles that 1982 can. From John Carpenter's cult classic horror masterpiece The Thing to Ridley Scott's Bladerunner, Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy, and Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extraterrestrial, there is no shortage of titles that are not only great but remarkably influential. Alongside those monolithic classics, a little $7.5 million romance flick released to rapturous praise and Oscar nominations, even being hailed as one of the year's best films and earning a memorable reference in The Simpsons. That film is An Officer and a Gentleman, directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger. Now, the charming classic is available to stream on Paramount+ to start the New Year with a bit of love and drama.

The Oscars have hosted a lavish ceremony celebrating the best of the best in cinema every year, but some people were banned and asked not to return. The first Academy Awards happened in 1929, and since then, hundreds of performers, directors, producers, art directors, and even musicians have been honored for their work in the film industry. The year's most anticipated event has boosted the popularity of many notable titles worldwide and made them some of the best movies of all time.
Throughout the year, audiences started to form theories about which movies would be big winners at the Academy Awards, and predictions for the 2025 Oscars began within weeks after the 2024 event ended. However, it has only been in recent years that the Academy has banned public figures from attending their events and casting their votes. The Academy of...

In much the same way that Elphaba soars through the sky while singing “Defying Gravity,” “Wicked” has taken off in the Oscar Best Picture race. According to Gold Derby’s combined odds, the musical sensation ranks in the top five behind “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” and “Emilia Pérez,” with nowhere to go but up after receiving four Golden Globe nominations. Should “Wicked” prevail on Oscar night, it would join a short list of winners that feature two female main characters, which has happened less frequently than you’d think.
Adapted from Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Tony-winning Broadway smash, “Wicked” centers on the friendship between green-skinned misfit Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and popular girl Glinda (Ariana Grande), who later become the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch, respectively. Funnily enough, the last Best Picture winner centered on two women was another musical adaptation, 2002’s “Chicago.”

Accused has wrapped season 2, but how does each episode rank?
Accused returned to Fox this fall for another set of episodes with a unique formula. Each episode of the anthology features a different cast and story with a person on trial for a crime. As the episode goes on, flashbacks show what happened, and inevitably, the crime itself is never what it originally seemed.
Season 1 was a good success with 15 episodes, while this year was only 8. That was shorter yet still had a great bevy of guest stars, making it notable. Some can argue Season 2 wasn’t as strong as the first year, and while there were great performances, not all the stories worked as well. Here’s how each episode of Accused Season 2 ranks to show which belonged in the top tier for the show.
Caution: This article contains minor Spoilers for Accused Season 2

Is there a character in the long cast list of The Simpsons more unremarkable yet totally endearing than Lenny Leonard? The Simpsons is jam-packed with supporting characters, and each could host their own The Simpsons spinoff show. Everyone has their favorite character. When I first began getting interested in The Simpsons, I asked for a new DVD box set almost every Christmas and birthday for years, winding up with about eight seasons of the classic show. I studied these background characters, grew to love them, and probably unknowingly, ranked them constantly against each other.
Like a lot of people, one of my first loves in The Simpsons was Mr. Burns. How could you hate a man with a Richard Simmons guard robot? Over the years, your tastes morph and change. You start to enjoy different things for different reasons. Natural Light used to be the pinnacle of beer for me.

The following contains major spoilers from Accused Season 2, Episode 5, "Margot's Story," which debuted Tuesday, Nov. 19 on Fox.
Accused Season 2, Episode 5, "Margot's Story" is not a typical Accused episode -- and that's why it falls short of the show's high standards. It doesn't necessarily fall down plot-wise, and Academy Award nominee Debra Winger is a perfect choice to play the role of headstrong widow Margot Holloway. But writer Daniel Pearle has done much better in Season 1, which was swinging for the fences every time out. In contrast, "Margot's Story" lacks the intellectual impact that this series has become known for.
"Margot's Story" takes place in Chicago and centers on Margot's entanglement with an attractive dance instructor, whom she and her friends know as Alexei Volkov. But when it's revealed that Alexei is a con artist -- that's not even his real name -- Margot is suspected of being involved in...

Shirley MacLaine is making a ghastly racket. It sounds like a combination of retching and the “aack” noise that the protagonist of that old “Cathy” comic strip used to make whenever she was nauseated, horrified, infuriated or you name it. We’re discussing an encounter that MacLaine had with Donald Trump in the ’80s, when she went to look at an apartment in one of his buildings. “In his head, I could see he was undressing himself and me, and I got out of there very fast,” MacLaine writes in her new book, “The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories From This Marvelous Lifetime.”
MacLaine is even more animated when I ask her what she made of the real estate developer turned Maga leader. “Did you hear me shriek?” she asks. “I think that says it all.” She pauses for dramatic effect before delivering a final, emphatic: “Yuck!”

The 2025 Academy Awards may have two actresses from the same movie nominated in the Best Actress category, a feat that hasn't happened in 23 years. Although the Oscars 2025 predictions for Best Actress include some current big names such as Saoirse Ronan, Emma Stone, Florence Pugh, and Lily Gladstone, a few old-time actresses threaten to make a return to the awards ceremony. Besides Angelina Jolie taking on the role of real-life opera singer, Maria Callas, in Pablo Larran's bio picture, Pedro Almodovr's The Room Next Door unites two of Hollywood's best character actresses.

For their performance in Almodvar's English-language debut, five-time nominee Julianne Moore and Best Supporting Actress winner Tilda Swinton aim to compete for the Best Actress category in the 2025 ceremony. The French Film Academy will honor legendary political filmmaker Costa-Gavras with its lifetime achievement award at the upcoming 2025 César Awards.
The 91-year-old auteur, born in Greece before fleeing to exile in Paris, is best known for his politically-charged cinema, including Oscar winners Z (1969) — a thinly fictionalized account of the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963 that led to the country’s long military dictatorship — and English-language feature Missing (1982), about the disappearance of an American journalist in the aftermath of the United States-backed Chilean coup of 1973.
Z was the first film to be nominated both for best picture and best international feature at the Academy Awards, winning the latter, as well as the Oscar for best film editing for Françoise Bonnot. Missing, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek, won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and was nominated for four Oscars, winning for best adapted screenplay.

We finally have a complete cast list for Accused season 2, so here’s a look at who’s starring in the second season of the Fox hit!
Based on a British show, Accused premiered in 2023 on Fox and quickly became a success. The anthology series opens with a person on trial and flashbacks showing how they got to this point. The storylines are unique, with the crime often not what viewers expected and not always having a happy ending.
The show did well in the ratings and is set for a second season. It was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, with Fox deciding to hold it off until this fall. As with season 1, each episode features a brand new guest cast with a new storyline.
It is confirmed that Emmy winner Michael Chiklis, who starred in the pilot episode, will return for season 2 but in a different part. He...

For producer Barry Navidi, Johnny Depp’s directorial comeback “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness” marks a full-circle moment in an unconventional career.
Navidi’s first time working with Depp nearly 30 years ago on the 1995 project “Divine Rapture” ended in disappointment when the production was shelved. But on Tuesday, the two will celebrate a high with the world premiere of “Modi” at San Sebastian Film Festival.
Set in war-torn Paris in 1916, “Modi” follows 72 turbulent hours in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani (Riccardo Scamarcio). Fleeing the police and contemplating leaving the city, Modi is convinced to stay by his fellow artists. After a night of hallucinations, he encounters American collector Maurice Gangnat (Pacino), who could change his life forever.
Born in pre-revolution Iran, Navidi grew up watching Hollywood and Indian films. One that made an impression was “The Godfather,” starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. “Call it fate,...
