4K Uhd Blu-ray Review: Julian Schnabel’s ‘Basquiat’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat is often at war with itself. At times, it effortlessly captures Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and the Manhattan art world in which he flourished with bracing authenticity, only for it to become weighed down by biopic clichés that flatten out its characterizations. For every patient sequence that sits back and allows the audience to observe Basquiat at work, carefully detailing his process, there are two more that feel like they were ripped straight from the artist biopic playbook.

As great a song as Modern Lovers’s “Girlfriend” is, playing it over the scene in which Basquiat meets soon-to-be girlfriend Gina (Claire Forlani)—a composite of Basquiat’s real-life girlfriends, including Suzanne Mallouk and Madonna—is impossibly on the nose. And that scene is followed up by another in which Basquiat and his best friend, Benny (Benicio del Toro), see a character on TV utter what would...

10 Best Westerns Since Django Unchained, Ranked
Image
When it was released in 2012, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained shattered box office records when it became the biggest box office haul in the history of the Western genre. A love letter to Spaghetti Westerns from directors like Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Leone, the film gave audiences a gritty revenge tale perfect for the director's bloody style. In the thirteen years since its release, the genre has seen plenty of great movies released to critical and audience acclaim.

Western movies continue to bring audiences well-acted, meaningful explorations of life on the frontier, from its challenges to its charms. Delivering interesting messages of revenge, forgiveness and everything in between, Tarantino's 2012 epic has been succeeded by an array of brilliant stories. While they might not all match the tone of Jamie Foxx's quest for vengeance, these movies all bring something unique to the genre in their own right.

'Strange Days' Is an Awesome New Year's Eve Movie (If You Can Find It)
Image
If the recent trailer success of 28 Years Later has shown us anything, it's that sometimes you can't find some of your favorite movies on streaming. After the trailer broke records, many people started seeking out 2002's 28 Days Later on any streaming platform, only to find it wasn't on one. Social media lit up when fans realized the film wasn't streaming anywhere and the matter was eventually rectified. Perhaps with Ralph Fiennes getting major Oscar buzz for Conclave, fans can start making noise about bringing his 1995 sci-fi thriller Strange Days to streaming because it's also missing. Plus, given the fact that it's New Year's Eve today, it would've made for the perfect viewing as we head into 2025.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow from a screenplay by her ex-husband James Cameron and Jay Cocks, Strange Days is a cyberpunk film set in Los Angeles during the last two days of 1999. The film follows Fiennes' Lenny Nero,...

Original Version of 'The Crow' Lands New Streaming Home on January 1
Image
To say that fans were disappointed with the 2024 reimagining of The Crow would be an understatement. Directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Bill Skarsgård, the film was a critical and commercial flop, earning just $24 million at the box office against a budget of $50 million. Hoping to recoup some of their losses, Lionsgate made it available on VOD less than a month after its theatrical debut, but by then the word was already out about how cringe it was. While people may have been let down by this new version, you can wash the taste out of your mouth by streaming the original classic when it lands on its new streaming home on Jan. 1.

Per Parmount+, The Crow will fly onto the streaming platform to help you ring in the new year, and forget the remake ever happened. Starring Brandon Lee in his final film role, the movie focuses on his character of Eric Draven,...

Comic Book Movie With 87% Rt Score Is Coming To Streaming After Disappointing 2024 Reimagining
Image
2024 might be the year of the film adaptation. While the year has seen numerous highs and lows, adaptations seem to be at the heart of the 2024 release calendar. While children's films sequels such as Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 have dominated the box office, so too have adaptations like It Ends With Us and Wicked. The abundance of adaptations over original content is often a criticism of the state of Hollywood right now, but the 2024 box office has shown that these films still do well commercially.

This year has also seen a number of comic book adaptations. Most notably, this includes Deadpool & Wolverine, a Marvel Comics adaptation that features the now-canonized titular MCU characters. Not all comic adaptations are created equally, however, as this year's Madame Web bombed at the box office and among critics. This summer also saw the release of a non-mcu comic book movie that took...

Sylvester Stallone’s Critically-Panned Comedy Is the Italian Stallion at His Funniest
Image
Hollywood is rife with breakouts, virtuosos, typecasts, and, unfortunately, miscasting — which is why you’ll rarely see an actor like Harrison Ford play a villain or Michael Wincott play the good guy. Diversity is key, however, so we often see actors taking chances on roles that may or may not fit them. Not every action star is cut out for comedy, and not every comedic actor is meant to do action, but it does happen quite frequently. When Die Hard changed the action genre in the late '80s, many of its meatier stalwarts took the cue to expand their repertoire, adding more comedy to their offerings. One of the more deft performances in this series of noble experiments is Sylvester Stallone’s turn as Angelo “Snaps” Provolone in the 1991 comedy crime caper Oscar.

10 Best Slow-Burn Westerns, Ranked
Image
Since the days of John Wayne and Howard Hawks, Western movies have been among the most respected in cinema, blending everything from adventure and action with social commentary and history. Having built up the careers of Hollywood icons like Clint Eastwood, John Ford, and Kevin Costner, the genre has also delivered a consistent line of fantastic films, from classics like The Searchers to modern hits like Django Unchained.

While some Westerns take no time to get to the action side of the genre, others have shown a penchant for telling drawn-out, slow-burn stories, which focus on characters and tension instead of gunfights. For many, the charm of the genre lies in its stunning visuals and almost unparalleled character studies, and some movies do a much better job of honoring this than others. From epic classics to modern hidden gems, the genre has no shortage of stories that take their time in getting to the action.

8 Biggest Differences Between Prime Video's Cross Show & Morgan Freeman's Alex Cross Movies
Image
Prime Video's Cross is the latest adaptation of the hit thriller novels, but just how different is the series from the original Morgan Freeman movies? Prime's Cross cast Aldis Hodge as the title character, who is seemingly doomed to chase down endlessly creative serial killers. While the James Patterson books also received a movie adaptation with 2012's Alex Cross (starring Tyler Perry), the Morgan Freeman movies are by far the most famous adaptations.

Freeman fronted both Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, which adapted the first two Patterson novels. An Alex Cross franchise felt like a natural move for Freeman after Se7en's success, but the reception to Along Came a Spider saw him move on from the character. It's over 20 years since Freeman last played the character and the Cross TV series is a total reinvention of the franchise for a new audience.

The Alien Franchise's 5 Main Protagonists, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Throughout the Alien franchise, several characters have served as protagonists as the series took increasingly bold, varied directions with their storytelling. While most audiences are familiar with Ripley and her adventures through the original movies, shes not the only character that deserves to be associated with this franchise. Many other actors have made their contributions to the franchise just as unique and memorable, giving this series a sense of longevity that few sci-fi sagas achieve. Alien may be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, but its the characters that allowed it to continue into the future.

The Alien franchise has reinvented itself several times throughout recent years, first with the Prometheus prequel series and later with Fede Alvarezs long-awaited spin-off Alien: Romulus. It's also clear the series has no plans to stop there: Ridley Scott is developing another Alien movie, and the story is shifting to televised storytelling with the upcoming Alien: Earth.

While touching on the importance of signpost moments that help provide the framework for the series' upcoming second season, Watkins also explained how far along the blueprint for the series goes. "All of those things are because I already had a four-year plan," Watkins said. "We want this thing to go for 10 seasons, but in my head, I had already made a four-year plan, and its based on some things that I want to do to mine and pay homage to the characters that are in the Alex Cross book series. 5 Great Tony Todd Movies To Watch In Remembrance
Image
Unfortunately, we recently lost an absolute legend with the passing of Tony Todd. His voice and presence are unmatched in the horror genre and has been a wonderful constant for over 30 years. Whenever an iconic actor passes, I think a great way to remember them is to look back on some of their greatest performances/movies. After all, this is their life’s work and clearly something they were very passionate about. But when it comes to Tony Todd, where do you even start?

Looking at his filmography can be overwhelming, given the sheer volume of films that the man starred in. One of the main traits of his roles is that he may hardly get any screen time in them, yet he manages to be the most intriguing character around. And while it’s not horror, I want to make sure to shout out his many wonderful TV appearances over the years,...

15 Scariest Creature Features From the Last 5 Years, Ranked
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Creature features have been a popular part of the horror genre since 1913 with Universal Studios' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and has expanded since with advancements in practical effects, amazing suit-acting, more powerful CGI tools and most importantly, creative storytelling. The last five years, in particular, have offered quite the buffet of terrifying creature features, from hidden gems released on streaming platforms to theatrical hits that have completely elevated the genre.

The creature feature remains one of the scariest subgenres in horror, confronting viewers with monstrous beings of all forms and origins. While fans eagerly await the remakes of classic titles like Wolf Man (directed by Leigh Whannell) and The Blob (directed by David Bruckner), there are thankfully plenty of other worthwhile creature features released in the last five years to sate their appetites.

Cross | Trailer released for James Patterson series on Amazon Prime
James Patterson
James Patterson’s Alex Cross book series is heading to the screen once again, and here’s the trailer for Cross.

Thus far, James Patterson’s Alex Cross action thriller novels have only been seen on the big screen. Morgan Freeman first took on the role of the detective for 1997’s Kiss the Girls, directed by Gary Fleder, and 2001’s Along Came A Spider, directed by Lee Tamahori. Both were well received and feature strong casts, including Ashley Judd, Carey Elwes and Michael Wincott.

A reboot landed in 2012, directed by Rob Cohen and starring Tyler Perry. However, Alex Cross was a critical and commercial failure, and plans for a sequel were dropped.

That brings us to Cross, a television series coming to Amazon Prime Video which follows Reacher's template of using the protagonist’s surname as the title.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) is a detective and forensic psychologist,...

The Crow Review: Brandon Lee Is Absolutely Unforgettable In The Premier Cult Classic Of The 90s
Image
In 1994, Alex Proyas brought James OBarrs The Crow comic to life with the help of writers David J. Schow (The Hunger) and John Shirley (The Specialist). Brandon Lee, a promising young actor and son of Bruce Lee, would portray the lead with Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Michael Wincott (Nope) in supporting roles. The result is the premier cult classic of the 90s. The Crow easily overcomes its camp and inconsistent CGI by simply being itself. The creatives are working with extreme confidence, and it shows in every frame.

The Crow Is Streaming for Free in September After Reboot Dies in Theaters
Image
The humiliation suffered by 2024s reimagining of The Crow could be complete if fans of the original movie flock to revisit the 1994 Brandon Lee original when it begins streaming for free on Pluto TV in September. The controversies surrounding this years version of the Gothic tale of love and vengeance made it almost impossible for Rupert Sanders retelling to gain any traction in theaters, leading to that film becoming one of the biggest bombs of the year.

1994s release of The Crow came under a cloud following the tragic death of star Brandon Lee, who was famously shot and killed while filming a scene for the movie. The actors death immortalized the film in its own bubble, making it impossible for anything that followed to live up to the mythical status of that adaptation. Despite that, several sequels to the film were made, all receiving terrible reviews and mostly vanishing without a trace.

The Crow Is Set to Stream for Free After Reboot Flops in Theaters
Image
The Crow is a story that's now been reimagined multiple times, but for some fans, there will never be any topping the 1994 adaptation. For those who prefer to watch the first movie over the lateast reimagining, fans will soon have a chance to revisit the classic film for free three decades later.

Featuring the late Brandon Lee in the lead role, The Crow will start streaming for free on Pluto TV in September. The film's arrival on free streaming comes amid the new reboot starring Bill Skarsgard greatly struggling in theaters. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the reboot bombed at the box office, earning less than $11 million worldwide in its debut weekend; the film was budgeted at $50 million, not including marketing costs. Making matters worse for the reboot was its critical reception, as it was pummeled with bad reviews, resulting in a current score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘The Crow’: The 5 Biggest Differences Between the New Movie and the 1994 Original
Image
“The Crow” has finally returned from the dead — again.

The 2024 remake of the 1994 classic, which has been in the works for more than 15 years, follows Eric (now played by Bill Skarsgård) who, along with his girlfriend Shelly (FKA Twigs), are killed by thugs. But he’s given a reprieve – he comes back from the dead and is offered the chance to get retribution against his murderers. And while this film, like the earlier movie (perhaps remembered most for the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee), is based on the James O’Barr comic book, this is a very different movie.

How different?

Read on to find out the five biggest differences between the new movie and the 1994 film. But beware – consider this your major spoiler warning, for both movies, really.

How to Watch ‘The Crow’ Movies in Order
Image
You can’t keep “The Crow” down. That’s kind of its whole thing. Naturally, the concept of the wronged dead who return from their grave seeking vengeance — inspired by James O’Barr’s comics of the same name — has sprung forth a franchise, which spans five total films since Alex Proyas’ iconic, stylish film debuted in 1994. The original film remains a heartbreaking watch after the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee, but it also holds up as a stunning, massively influential goth rock urban fantasy — not to mention an early comic book adaptation.

The rest of the “The Crow” movies? Well, they’re not quite so enduring, despite a steady stream of familiar faces in the casts, including Kirsten Dunst, Edward Furlong, Mia Kirschner, Fred Ward, David Boreanaz and now, Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs in the long-awaited remake.

Aside from a central character that carries over from the first to second movie,...

‘The Crow’ Review: Lugubrious Bill Skarsgard Reboot Scarcely Improves on the Original’s Disposable Sequels
Image
Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow owes its enduring cult bona fides partly to high-style visuals rooted in peak-era MTV, a churning alt-metal soundtrack and way cool goth-chic fashion sense. But the larger factor behind the sleek thriller’s cultural imprint was the tragic accident during filming that took the life of promising star Brandon Lee at 28, echoing the death at a similarly young age of his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Director Rupert Sanders attempts to slip out from under the original’s shadow by avoiding the word “remake” and calling this a modern reimagining of the source material. That doesn’t make it any less turgid.

Drowning in brooding atmosphere, rain-slicked nightscapes and goopy eyeliner, and tossing in some retro flavor with tracks by Joy Division, Gary Numan and others, the new iteration of The Crow is more focused on aesthetics than storytelling. So it makes sense that...

Alien: Resurrection (1997) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Alien, le 8ème passager (1979)
A new episode of the Revisited video series has arrived online this morning – and since the latest entry in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is currently in theatres, we decided this would be a good time to look back at one of the least popular Alien movies, the 1997 release Alien: Resurrection (watch it Here). In the video embedded above, you’ll hear how this film’s odd and wacky tone managed to kill the franchise. For a while, anyway.

Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet from a screenplay written by Joss Whedon, Alien: Resurrection has the following synopsis: The saga continues 200 years after Ripley sacrificed herself for the sake of humanity. Her erstwhile employers long gone, this time it is the military that resurrects the one-woman killing machine through genetic cloning to extract the alien from within her, but during the process her DNA is fused with the queen and then the aliens escape.

Alien: Romulus Review: Fan Service with Killer Instinct
Image
Alien has been Disney-fied. It hasn’t been softened or sanitized for a younger audience. It has instead been tweaked and studio-noted to mollify executives, under a clear, deeply misguided mandate to make product camouflaged “for the fans” in service of The Company. This mandate includes, but is not limited to: 1. including at least one recognizable character or characters; 2. if the actor responsible for that character is deceased, deploy a gluey, CGI replica in their place. Let’s add: 3. catchphrases and callbacks, unmotivated or illogical, are a must; 4. all of the above are doctrine, because market research indicates they bump up the CinemaScore by half a letter grade or more.

It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may...

The Correct Order To Watch The Alex Cross Movies
Image
If you're a big fan of trashy, popular airport mystery paperbacks, you probably know who James Patterson and Alex Cross are. Patterson is a highly successful author (he's the first person to ever sell one million e-books), and while these days he seems to let other people write for him and then just slaps his name on the cover and cashes a check, his early books were authored solo. And when he wrote those early books, he created Alex Cross, a character who has appeared in several books now. Cross is a brilliant Metropolitan Police Department detective who often hunts down twisted serial killers. He's the type of ready-for-the-screen character that people love to watch, so it makes sense that there have been multiple Alex Cross movies — and there's a new Alex Cross TV series on the way, too, headed to Prime Video.

For now, we're just going to focus on the movies.

‘The Crow: Salvation’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Eric Mabius, Kirsten Dunst, Fred Ward, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, Debbie Fan, William Atherton, David Jean Thomas, Grant Shaud, Dale Midkiff, Walton Goggins | Written by Chip Johannessen | Directed by Bharat Nalluri

The Crow: Salvation is the third instalment in the franchise that began with the iconic 1994 film The Crow, recently released on 4K Uhd, starring Brandon Lee. Directed by Bharat Nalluri, The Crow: Salvation attempts to recapture the dark, gothic allure that made the original a cult classic but falls short in several areas when compared to its predecessors.

The film follows Alex Corvis (Eric Mabius), who is wrongly executed for the murder of his girlfriend, Lauren (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe). After being resurrected by the mystical crow, Alex seeks to uncover the conspiracy behind Lauren’s death and his own wrongful conviction. Unlike the vengeful rock musician Eric Draven from the original film, Alex is a more subdued character.

The soundtrack to The Crow showed up in stores two months before the actual movie played in multiplexes. That should give you an idea of how popular soundtracks were back in the day.

During the ‘90s, soundtracks were usually vital to whatever big-screen attraction was hitting theaters at the time.

Brandon Lee's Role in The Crow Was Already Remade 25 Years Ago
Image
News of this summer's Crow reboot, with Bill Skarsgard slated as Eric Draven in the role made famous by Brandon Lee, has elicited negative reactions among fans. The complex legacy of The Crow spans multiple attempted sequels and a TV show, but none have had lasting success, even as new characters were introduced. Bill Skarsgard's casting in the reboot may be the last chance for The Crow to succeed commercially and win over new fans; the old ones are already resigned to rejecting any modern reinterpretation.

Upon news of the upcoming reboot of The Crow, the internet was immediately flooded with the customary tidal wave of bile. The downvote ratio on the trailer as of writing is trending negative, with little hope attached to Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard, now seizing the mantle of protagonist Eric Draven.

Crow fanatics are not welcoming the reboot with open arms and don't seem too...

The Crow 30th Anniversary Release Captures Brandon Lee's Passion Perfectly
Image
Quick Links The Crow's Difficult Production May Have Made It Better Alex Proyas Points Out the Film's Flaws Brandon Lee's Legacy Is Personified in The Crow The Crow Rebooted 30 Years Later The 30th anniversary 4K Uhd edition of The Crow offers a pristine transfer, great commentaries, and a lot of context, especially ahead of the reboot. The new release, which is also coming to theaters, is an interesting reminder of how unfinished the film actually was, but also of Brandon Lee's immense passion and the commitment of the cast and crew to do him justice. The Crow is a gothic fantasy of vengeance that perfectly captures the cultural zeitgeist of the 1990s and is haunted by the specter of death. It's hard to imagine the reboot emulating that vibe.

The Crow was released almost exactly 30 years ago, and there's a 30th anniversary 4K Uhd edition of the film now available.

10 Terrifying Horror Movie Monsters That Deserved More Than 1 Film
Image
Some iconic horror movie monsters only appear in one film, like the Pale Man and the Queen from Aliens. Jean Jacket from Nope offers a unique take on an extraterrestrial life form that deserves further exploration. The terrifying mutant bear in Annihilation showcases the power of sound design and deserves more screen time.

Movie studios don’t usually let franchise potential go unfulfilled, but some of the scariest horror movie monsters only ever appeared in one film and never got a sequel. Usually, when a movie monster is popular, Hollywood keeps bringing it back for sequel after sequel until it loses all its impact. After the success of Jaws, Universal brought in a bunch of other bloodthirsty sharks for a string of sequels. There have been dozens of Godzilla films and they’re not slowing down any time soon. Even the Judas breed from Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic came...

Original Crow Star Expresses Controversial Reaction to Bill Skarsgård's New Look
Image
Original The Crow star Rochelle Davis expressed her strong disapproval of Bill Skarsgård new look in the upcoming remake. The debate surrounding Skarsgård's look raises questions about fidelity to the character's punk rock roots as inspired by the original comic book series. The recasting of an iconic role like Eric Draven, originally played by Brandon Lee, presents a daunting task for actors due to the film's enduring popularity and Lee's tragic death.

The upcoming reboot of the beloved cult film The Crow has set off a combination of excitement and controversy. The tragic death of Brandon Lee during production contributed significantly to the unforgettable impact the original movie, released in 1994, had on cinema. With the new iteration of the film set to release on June 7, the first looks at Bill Skarsgård in the iconic role of Eric Draven have prompted strong responses, not least from Rochelle Davis, who played Sarah...

"Next Reboot Thanks": Original The Crow Director Responds To Bill Skarsgård's Remake Look
Image
Bill Skarsgård's new look as Eric Draven in the The Crow reboot faced backlash on social media. Director Alex Proyas, who made the 1994 The Crow movie, joined in, mocking the character's appearance on Facebook. Proyas captioned a new first-look photo from the movie with "Eric Draven's having a bad hair day."

Bill Skarsgård's look in the The Crow reboot has sparked a reaction from Alex Proyas. Proyas was the director of the 1994 movie adaptation of the The Crow comic series, which starred the late Brandon Lee. The new version, which was directed by Rupert Sanders, stars Skarsgård as musician Eric Draven, who is resurrected as The Crow to seek vengeance after he and his fiancée (FKA Twigs) are killed. When images from the movie were released showcasing Draven with face tattoos and shorter hair, they were lambasted on social media and negatively compared to Joker's look in 2016's Suicide Squad.

The Crow director Alex Proyas blasts the look of Eric Draven in the remake
Bill Skarsgård at an event for Nine Days (2020)
Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.

Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

Brandon Lee in The Crow (1994)
The Crow is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK
Brandon Lee in The Crow (1994)
30 years after it debuted, The Crow – starring Brandon Lee – is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK. More here.

The latest example of a movie anniversary to make some of us feel really rather old? That’d be 1994’s The Crow, a film I remember driving through pouring rain to go and see. Famous of course for being the final movie of Brandon Lee, who died in a tragic on-set accident, it’s the best recreation of James O’Barr’s The Crow character on screen to date. A fresh take is due in cinemas this coming summer.

Before that, though, there’s the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut of 1994’s The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas and co-starring Rochelle Davis, Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott and Bai Ling, the film was an R-rated comic book film at a point where that wasn’t even a contentious thing to be.

Seraphim Falls Perfectly Paired Two Aging Action Icons in a Bloody Western
Image
Seraphim Falls went from obscurity to Netflix success, showcasing the evolving landscape of film distribution and consumption. Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan's star power helped revive Seraphim Falls on Netflix after a lackluster theatrical release. The resurgence of Seraphim Falls highlights the potential for other overlooked Neeson and Brosnan films to find new life on streaming platforms like Netflix.

The revisionist Western film Seraphim Falls was completely ignored in 2007 when the film received a limited theatrical release and grossed less than $500,000 at the domestic box office against a production cost of $18 million. Moreover, Seraphim Falls failed to attract a sizable post-theatrical audience over the ensuing 15 years, despite the presence of worldwide stars Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan.

Seraphim Falls toiled in obscurity until 2024 when the film debuted on Netflix and much belatedly became one of the streaming service’s most-viewed films. However, unlike many other films that have been reborn on Netflix,...

The Crow comes to 4K with new and legacy bonus content
Image
We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

The 4K version looks absolutely amazing,...

Netflix's 2007 Western Beats Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven In 1 Important Way
Image
"Unforgiven" reinvented the Western genre with its condemnation of violence, but a newer movie might have done it even better. While "Unforgiven" showed the negative effects of violence, the movie still glorified it by making Clint Eastwood's Munny into a cool and likable character. "Seraphim Falls" depicts violence in an uncomfortable way to deliver its similar main theme, making it a more effective film than "Unforgiven" in conveying its message.

Clint Eastwood's classic movie Unforgiven changed the Western genre forever, but another movie from 2007 might have beaten it in one key area that works better today. Unforgiven stars Eastwood as William Munny, a vicious outlaw who tried to leave his criminal days behind him. He was drawn back into the gun-slinging life after a young man offered to split the reward money from a bounty with him, and Munny needed funds to support his children. Unforgiven deconstructed the Western genre,...

Alien: Resurrection director Jean-Pierre Jeunet looks back on the making of the wild sequel – Exclusive!
Image
Alien and Aliens are two of the most highly respected and beloved sci-fi horror films ever made… and all of the films that have followed have either been divisive in one way or another, or just flat-out poorly received. One of the least popular entries in the franchise is the 1997 installment Alien: Resurrection (watch it Here), which put some fans off with its wild and weird tone and its crazy ideas. Decades down the line, Alien: Resurrection director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is currently doing the press rounds to promote a theatrical re-release of his very popular 2001 romantic comedy Amélie, and JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols took the opportunity to ask him about the making of his Alien sequel. Here’s how it went:

Tyler Nichols: I’m also a big horror fan, so I have to ask you about your work on Alien: Resurrection. Because I still think of the underwater...
