Box Office: ‘F1’ Racing Toward $55M-$58M U.S. Opening, ‘M3GAN’ Sequel Flames Out With $10M
Image
Apple Original Films‘ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie is off to the races.

The Formula One movie — directed by Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame and starring Brad Pitt — earned an impressive $25 million on Friday from 3,661 theaters for a North American opening in the $55 million-$58 million range, well ahead of expectations. Friday’s haul included a hefty $10 million in previews.

Warner Bros. is distributing and helping Apple to market the big-budget summer tentpole, which is tipped to earn another $85 million overseas for a global start of at least $140 million — supplanting World War Z’s $112 million to mark the biggest worldwide launch of Pitt’s career, not adjusted for inflation. F1 has a huge advantage in having a lock on Imax screens for three weeks, in addition to playing in other premium large-format screens, including Dolby Cinema, for part of that time. (On Friday, 58 percent of ticket sales were for...

The Movie (2022)
F1 speeds toward $10 million in Thursday night previews
The Movie (2022)
There are currently a lot of IMAX tickets sold for the Thursday and Friday screenings of the F1 The Movie. The premium format is said to be a very immersive experience for the film and our own Chris Bumbray glowed in his 9/10 review that it’s “one of the most awe-inspiring works of pure spectacle seen on the big screen in years. It’s stunning to look at, and the IMAX ratio makes the racing scenes feel like a rollercoaster ride.” He also stated, “It can’t be denied that F1 is an absolute rollercoaster ride of a movie, and – like Sinners – helps make the case for theatres still being essential to a particular kind of filmmaking. Hopefully, this is the blockbuster hit it deserves to be.”

He has also written a column about why you should see F1 in IMAX, which you can check out Here. Deadline has reported...

Werner Herzog at an event for Bad Lieutenant : Escale à la Nouvelle-Orléans (2009)
‘No plans ever to retire’: why Steven Spielberg and the movie brat generation just won’t quit
Werner Herzog at an event for Bad Lieutenant : Escale à la Nouvelle-Orléans (2009)
Spielberg, 78, has announced he’ll keep making films till he dies – and he’s a spring chicken next to Coppola, Scorsese, Werner Herzog and Ridley Scott, all still working in their 80s. What makes directing a job for life?

If life behaved in the same way as movies, then The Fabelmans would have been Steven Spielberg’s last film. He spent the previous five decades writing the rulebook of modern cinema, and then The Fabelmans was the rare work of art that wrapped everything up with a neat little bow. Part autobiography and part tutorial, it was like the work of a man looking back on his life with a sense of satisfied completion.

But real life doesn’t behave like that, and Spielberg has just announced that he is never going to retire. In fact, he announced it twice. In a speech he gave during a star-studded event unveiling...

Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Les Dents de la mer (1975)
Steven Spielberg says he has no plans…ever…to retire
Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Les Dents de la mer (1975)
The shark movie that you may have heard of, Jaws, turned a golden 50 this year. The movie and director Steven Spielberg had changed cinema forever as the first summer blockbuster, and is just one of the many movies Spielberg directed that became synonymous with the film medium. The director with the legendary legacy was celebrated at Universal last night with a new state-of-the-art theater dedicated to the iconic filmmaker. Guests of the event included Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and president Mike Cavanagh, as well as actors like John Travolta, Vin Diesel, Seth Rogen, Colman Domingo, Dakota Fanning, Jeff Goldblum and Goonies stars Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen. Additionally, writer-directors such as Jon M. Chu, the Daniels and Kevin Williamson were in attendance.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg happily joins his fellow 70s class of filmmakers, like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott, who have proclaimed that despite their advanced age,...

As ‘F1’ revs up, a look at Jerry Bruckheimer’s 8 best Oscar-nominated movies
Image
Jerry Bruckheimer, start your engines. The veteran producer's latest summer spectacle, F1: The Movie, races into theaters on Friday and is already expected to top the weekend box office courtesy of Brad Pitt's star power and the global popularity of the Formula 1 racing circuit.

Based on advanced looks, F1 also has the right stuff to appeal to Oscar voters — much like Bruckheimer's previous collaboration with director Joseph Kosinski, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. That legacy sequel received six nominations, including Best Picture. That also happened to be Bruckheimer's first nod in a five-decade career.

"We got recognized for a terrific film and thanks to Tom Cruise, I'm here," the producer said at the time, adding: "I've been doing it for so long and haven't had the accolades from my peers. ... I finally got that which is kind of a completion for making movies for all these years."

While Top Gun: Maverick...

Villeneuve has been rumored as one of the high-profile directors being looked at for the project, alongside the likes of Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Jonathan Nolan and Paul King. Earlier, the sense was that Alfonso Cuarón, a frequent collaborator of producer Heyman, might be taking the gig.

The Bond directing gig has been the most closely watched in town ever since Amazon MGM acquired full creative control of the franchise in February in a historic deal with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, resulting in a new joint venture. The studio gained distribution rights to Bond with the acquisition of MGM Studios for...

Box Office Preview: ‘F1’ to Leave ‘M3GAN 2.0’ in the Dust With High-Octane $40M-$50M U.S. Opening
Image
An aging driver and a menacing AI doll go up against each other at the box office this weekend in what’s a test for two challenged genres — Formula 1 racing pics and horror titles.

If box office pundits are correct, Apple Original Films’ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie will leave Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s sequel M3GAN 2.0 in the dust with an impressive domestic opening of $40 million to $50 million. Warner Bros., which is distributing and helping Apple to market the big-budget summer tentpole, is being more conservative in suggesting in the high $30 million range.

Overseas, the action sports drama is forecasted to take in $75 million for a worldwide opening of $115 million or more against a net production budget of at least $200 million before marketing. (Sources tells The Hollywood Reporter the production budget is far higher, but there’s no way of confirming whether that’s the case.

Stephen King Thinks This Clint Eastwood Movie Is One Of This Century's Best

The New York Times recently ran a poll asking famous filmmakers, actors, and writers to name the best movies of the century so far. From Pedro Almodóvar to "West Side Story" and "Snow White" star Rachel Zegler, the Times asked dozens upon dozens of famous people about their favorite feature films released since the year 2000 and then compiled their responses into a Top 100 list (ranked by which movies got the most votes). The poll was very similar to the polls that Sight & Sound holds once every decade, only limited to releases from the last 25 years and inviting a different team of filmmakers, writers, and executives to participate. (Sight & Sound also invites critics and essayists.)

As of this writing, one can see many of the Top 10 lists submitted by the participants, and, boy howdy, are some of the choices interesting. Alex Winter, the star of the "Bill & Ted" films and director of "Freaked,...

Kevin Spacey Receives Maximo Excellence Award at Global Series Festival
Image
Kevin Spacey has secured another award as he continues his efforts to make a comeback. The disgraced actor and director received the Maximo Excellence award at the inaugural Italian Global Series Festival in Riccione, Italy. Spacey's career hit a dramatic halt in 2017 as sexual misconduct allegations began to surface against him. Those allegations led to his highly publicized dismissal from Netflix's critically acclaimed House of Cards, where he had portrayed the lead role of Frank Underwood. He was also replaced in Ridley Scott's film All the Money in the World during post-production, with Christopher Plummer reshooting his scenes.

Since his acquittal on charges in the US in 2022 and in the UK in 2023, Spacey has appeared in several independent features. Among these projects is the 2022 Italian drama L'uomo Che Disegnò Dio (The Man Who Drew God), directed by and starring Franco Nero. This film, based on a true story,...

‘Pusherman’ Director Legs McNeil Reveals the Real Story of ‘American Gangster’ Frank Lucas
Image
The scourge of heroin use by Black Americans in cities like New York in the 1970s sparked Richard Nixon’s War of Drugs. The goal was to “associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin” and to “disrupt those communities” by “criminalizing both heavily,” Nixon’s domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman said in 2016.

Legs McNeil uses that quote in his documentary, Pusherman: Frank Lucas & The True Story of American Gangster, distributed by Mvd Entertainment, which arrives on streaming service Tubi today (June 24). “I’d never heard it before,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought it was a fantastic quote. It made sense because they would raid you, they’d target you. I was targeted as a kid for going to antiwar demonstrations.”

McNeil’s movie focuses on Frank Lucas, the Harlem dope pusher made famous in Ridley Scott’s 2007 druggy saga American Gangster, which was based on a...

Mystery swirled around their identities. Some media outlets suggested the woman was a Ukrainian refugee, while others ran reports that she was a hacker, who hailed either from Russia or Ireland.

A week later, a 46-year-old U.S. man, described as a film producer and director named Rexal Ford, was arrested on the Greek island of Skiathos on suspicion of being the killer, in an operation involving cooperation between the Italian and Greek police forces as well as the FBI.

Will ‘F1’ Finally Give Apple a Box Office Hit?
Image
Apple Original Films’ recent foray into movie theaters has mostly brought lackluster number at the box office, and its future is very murky. But the Silicon Valley studio may finally have its first bona-fide big-screen hit with “F1,” the Brad Pitt racing drama from “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Lewis Hamilton.

With annual revenues of $390 billion, Apple is willing and able to spend big on projects that Hollywood’s legacy studios wouldn’t touch, as evidenced by the $150 million-plus budgets granted to titles like Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon.” With “F1,” the bar has been raised even further.

Sporting a net budget of at least $200 million, “F1” is a film as globe-trotting as the racing circuit whose name it bears. Kosinski, Pitt and their film crew traveled the world with Formula One, filming races in locales like Las Vegas,...

John Carpenter Directed A Cult Classic Sci-Fi Comedy Before Becoming A Master Of Horror
Image
John Carpenter's thematically connected Apocalypse Trilogy — which comprises "The Thing," "Prince of Darkness," and "In the Mouth of Madness" — is the ultimate test of faith. All three movies offer bleak landscapes steeped in nihilism, telling isolated stories that prove that humanity never had any hope to begin with. Some stories are lessons in paranoia-fueled xenophobia, while "In the Mouth of Madness" specifically tunes into a more esoteric interpretation of the end of the world. Carpenter weaves a suffocating net of terror with this uncanny triptych, underlining his strongest impulses as a horror director who comprehends the language of fear. So much so that his beloved, mainstream horror entry "Halloween" feels almost cozier in comparison to the thematic ushering of an apocalypse that leaves mankind utterly helpless and alone.

Then there are his post-apocalyptic forays, such as "Escape from New York" and "Escape from L.A.," which take a dramatic, action-packed...

Ridley Scott's New Movie Is Dethroned on Streaming by Apple's Sci-Fi Series With 97% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
There's a new No. 2 on Apple TV+. Echo Valley, the new Ridley Scott-produced thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, has been kicked to third place by the new sci-fi series Murderbot.

Per FlixPatrol, Murderbot has jumped up three spots on Apple TV+'s Top 10 Overall list to No. 2, knocking Echo Valley down one spot to No. 3. However, Murderbot was unable to dethrone the reigning champion, Stick, the new Owen Wilson sports comedy series about a washed-up pro who turns to a young gifted golfer to turn his life around, which is holding onto that No. 1 spot. Of course, Echo Valley is still No. 1 when it comes to just movies on Apple TV+, while Stick and Murderbot are No. 1 and No. 2 for TV shows.

Murderbot is based on Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, with the first season adapting All Systems Red, the 2017 novella that kicked off the sci-fi series.

Why Danny Boyle Passed On Directing Alien Sequel Revealed 27 Years After Divisive Response
Danny Boyle
With director Danny Boyle returning to the horror franchise he helped start in 28 Years Later, he also reflected on turning down his previous opportunity to direct Alien Resurrection. Boyle's return in 28 Years Later comes more than two decades after he helped redefine the zombie movie genre with 28 Days Later. The 2002 movie was Boyle's first horror movie, and he proved to be a true talent for the genre. However, closer to the start of his career, Boyle was offered the chance to direct a sequel in one of the biggest horror franchises of all time.

Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporter, Boyle explained that he was approached to direct the fourth movie in the Alien franchise, Alien: Resurrection. The movie ended up being directed by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, but Boyle was the studio's first choice for the project, coming off his acclaimed breakout movie, Trainspotting. Danny Boyle Reveals the Real Reason Why He Didn't Make 'Alien: Resurrection'
Image
Danny Boyle, the director of films like Trainspotting, The Beach, and 28 Days Later, has revealed that he was supposed to make the fourth film in the Alien series, the sci-fi horror franchise created by Ridley Scott in 1979. The director said he was happy to be involved in the film, which eventually became Alien Resurrection. However, he ultimately decided to abandon the project because he felt he wasn't "the right guy" to direct the horror sequel.

Boyle is currently promoting his most recent feature, 28 Years Later. The zombie horror movie is the third in the franchise, and it marks Boyle's official return to the series. He directed 28 Days Later in 2002, the groundbreaking movie that revolutionized the zombie genre. Ridley Scott’s $218 Million Historical Epic With Divisive Rt Score Just Found a New Streaming Home
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott has been behind some of the most iconic films of all time. He has helmed many box office hits, although his projects weren't always a hit with the critics.

2005's Kingdom of Heaven is one of them. His lesser-known historical epic premiered on May 6, 2005, and received mixed reviews, but made decent money at the box office. As the film recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, Kingdom of Heaven has also scored a brand-new streaming home and will head to Hulu on July 1, per WhenToStream.

The historical epic had previously switched streaming homes late last year. Ahead of Gladiator II's release, which marked the sequel to probably one of Ridley Scott's most famous works, 2000's Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven headed to Prime Video on Nov. 1. The film had been available on Disney+ before, and now it's heading to Hulu.

A new era for mobile cinema is imminent. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 Ultra—yet to be officially unveiled—is expected to power the first-ever 200Mp 1-inch-class image sensor in a smartphone. This revolutionary combo may redefine what’s possible in mobile filmmaking, pushing smartphones closer to full-fledged cinematic tools.

A 200Mp 1-inch-class sensor marks a seismic leap for smartphone cameras. In the past, high-resolution sensors were often bottlenecked by small sensor sizes and limited light capture. But a 1-inch sensor changes everything—dramatically improving dynamic range, depth of field, and low-light sensitivity. Metal Hurlant, the French comic book anthology from the 1970s and 80s credited with reshaping the contemporary sci-fi aesthetic and inspiring films such as “Alien,” “Tron,” “Blade Runner,” “Akira” and “The Fifth Element,” is returning on its 50th anniversary.

A new English-language quarterly edition of Metal Hurlant — first announced last year — is hitting shelves this week from publishers Humanoids, which launched the original in France in 1975. Variety can exclusively reveal several excerpts of new stories from the anthology alongside support from one of the biggest filmmakers working today.

Excerpt from ‘Respect’ by Matthew Allison

Metal Hurlant was first created by comic artists Jean Giraud (better known as Mœbius) and Philippe Druillet, together with journalist-writer Jean-Pierre Dionnet and finance director Bernand Farkas. Collectively, the four were known as “Les Humanoïdes Associés (United Humanoids), which became the name of their publishing house, first launched in Paris but now based in Los Angeles.

M3GAN 2.0 Leaving Its Horror Roots Isn’t Bad After James Cameron Did It in His 94% Rated Best Sequel
Image
When M3GAN first crawled her way into our nightmares, she was the perfect combo of creepy and cute—a murderous babysitter. The original film gave us chills, thrills, and a tech-savvy doll with a deadly side-eye. And now, the franchise is expanding with M3GAN 2.0 on the way. But this time, things are about to go full throttle.

Scheduled to release on June 27, 2025, this upcoming sequel is ditching slow-burn scares for high-octane action, and honestly, it might not be such a bad thing. Why? Because James Cameron did it in 1986 and succeeded. So maybe Megan’s glow-up won’t be so risky after all.

M3GAN 2.0 is trading jump scares for high-octane punches

Back in 2022, when M3GAN was released in theaters worldwide, it wasn’t just a horror movie. It was a whole vibe, with a killer doll, jump scares, and lots of emotional trauma. The movie gave us those spine-tingling chills,...

Despite Instant Streaming Success, Ridley Scott's New Thriller Fails to Impress on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Ridley Scott is a critically acclaimed filmmaker who has received three Academy Award nominations for his directorial skills, including one for 2000's Gladiator. However, aside from writing and directing, he has also produced many projects.

One of them is Apple TV+'s recent release, the Sydney Sweeney-led thriller Echo Valley. The thriller debuted at the top of the charts instantly after its release on streaming on June 13. However, even if the film has all the ingredients to become a streaming hit, Echo Valley failed to impress the critics and the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

From the critics, Echo Valley received a 50% approval score, which comes with a "rotten" badge. The audience gave the mystery a positive score but just barely, holding a 61% rating, which is just above the positive threshold at 60% on the Popcornmeter.

Reeling Reviews' Laura Clifford gave Echo Valley a positive score, highlighting that the Ridley Scott-produced...

Ridley Scott Blamed Harrison Ford for the 89%-Rated Film’s Most Awkward Flaw
Image
One awkward voiceover, one grumpy actor, and one sci-fi classic—that’s the chaotic world of Blade Runner! Believe it or not, the 1982 cult classic, which now sits pretty with an 89% rating and multiple versions, once had fans scratching their heads over a weird narration that felt like Harrison Ford was forced to do it at gunpoint.

Now, while most people might have blamed the studio for it—director Ridley Scott kind of pointed fingers at Harrison Ford himself! Apparently, the narration was never really in sync with the film’s tone, and Scott thinks Ford ruined it on purpose. Yup, Ford’s “grumpy” energy might just be the reason why the voiceover landed flat.

If you’ve ever stumbled upon the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, and found yourself greeted by a narration from Harrison Ford—then congrats,...

Sam Rockwell Got His Head Shaved By Demi Moore and a Few Strippers Before Dropping Out of ‘G.I. Jane’ | Video
Image
Sam Rockwell may have dropped out of “G.I. Jane” but he got a good story before he did.

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday night, Rockwell remembered a party thrown by “G.I. Jane” star Demi Moore for everyone cast as a Navy Seal in the film – which he was at the time. The actor ended the night with a shaved head.

“Demi Moore had just done ‘Striptease,’ the movie, and she got a strip joint, and she got all the strippers and the Navy Seals and the actors and got us drunk on tequila,” Rockwell said. “And they shaved our heads — the strippers and Demi shaved our heads, and we got drunk with the Navy Seals and got lap dances.”

Kimmel was shocked the actor would bow out of the movie after that. Rockwell explained that the movie involved so much time in the water and he...

Jennifer Lawrence’s Notorious Box Office Bomb With Rare F CinemaScore Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Paramount knew what it was getting into with director Darren Aronofsky's mother!. Starring Jennifer Lawrence in the titular role, the movie earned a rare F grade according to CinemaScore, which implies extreme dislike among audiences who checked it out on its first day of release. Generally, movies that score this poorly on the polling platform become objects of curiosity, which is exactly what happened with mother! The fact that the film starred A-listers such as Lawrence and Javier Bardem only made it more intriguing. This fascination will follow it for eternity, which is why the movie keeps popping up on streaming charts regularly.

According to FlixPatrol, mother! was the ninth-biggest film on Paramount+ on June 12, earning a total of 41 points on the platform. The list was led, as it has been for weeks, by Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick took the number two spot,...

Gerard Butler’s $454 Million Action Blockbuster Speared by ‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ at Global Box Office
Image
A day after it overtook director Ridley Scott's landmark original Gladiator film at the global box office, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has surpassed perhaps the most memorable movie that director Zack Snyder has ever made. It's certainly the film that launched his career, establishing him as a specialist in the comic book genre. Released in 2006, Snyder's 300 concluded its global box office run with nearly $455 million, a figure that The Final Reckoning has surpassed in 20 days of release.

That being said, the action epic's reported budget of $400 million puts it in a difficult spot. The Final Reckoning needs to gross at least $800 million worldwide in order to break even, seeing as it's one of the most expensive movies of all time. Costs ballooned because of the pandemic and the industry-wide strikes of 2023. Plus, star Tom Cruise is a stickler for in-camera perfection, which means that no...
