Americana Review: A Cover Album of B-Movie Greatest Hits
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2023 SXSW coverage. Americana opens in theaters on August 15.

Sometimes it can be fun to watch a skillful band cover songs. Tony Tost’s Americana is precisely that: an ode to the drive-in B-movie which in turn influenced filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, who in turn influenced a generation of filmmakers making quirky violent ensemble films with scrambled chronologies. What’s new is old again and Americana, influenced by films from the 1970s, feels more like a film from the 1990s with notes of Allison Anders’ Gas Food Lodging, David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, and the Kiefer Sutherland-directed neo-noir Truth or Consequences, N.M. The result, thanks in part to a compelling cast, elevates this material past the cinematic equivalent of the local dad band playing Springsteen covers at the corner bar on a Saturday night.

Americana is divided into chapters. In the first,...

These puzzles can be a bit challenging at times, though. Fret not, as I will be listing the solutions for four of today’s Framed puzzles – along with a general breakdown of the whole puzzle.

Stream This Underseen 30 Year Old Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman Western Classic Next Month
Image
There’s just something about a Western that proved to be like a magnet during the careers of Kevin Costner and the late Gene Hackman. Both men appeared in numerous gunslinging projects, with the former continuing to chase his dream of the biggest genre epic of all time with his Horizon saga. But, more than 30 years ago, the pair’s paths crossed when they joined the call sheet for Lawrence Kasdan’s (Dreamcatcher) period classic, Wyatt Earp. Although the movie may not have been as popular as other similar titles that the two leading men starred in, it’s still certainly worth a watch all these decades later. And soon, Netflix fans will have the chance to do exactly that, as Wyatt Earp rides onto the streamer on August 1.

As the title would suggest, Wyatt Earp followed the life of the titular lawman, tracing the timeline back to his younger...

David Lynch's 91% Rotten Tomatoes Neo-Noir Thriller With a 'Dune' Star Has a New Free Streaming Home
Image
The late director David Lynch has given us some of the most iconic movies. He was the kind of visionary whose work, in some instances, made more sense in retrospect. From surreal landscapes, cinematography, to thrilling plots and misunderstood heroes, his movies have a quality, a dreamy texture, that no one can replicate. Among his long list of works is Blue Velvet, starring hisfrequent collaborator and Dune star Kyle MacLachlan, which has found a free streaming home, per ComicBook.

Blue Velvet is among the movies that got their flowers late; it received divided reviews upon its release in the 80s and wasn’t a big commercial success, but in contemporary times is considered among the best movies of all time. The movie also bagged Lynch a Best Director Oscar nomination among other accolades. It has a 91 percent Rotten Tomatoes score from critics while the audience score sits at 88 percent. It...

Bleak Week Returns to American Cinematheque and The Paris Theater — and Adds Six More Venues Around the World
Image
Film critic Roger Ebert once said that no good movie is truly depressing, a belief that the programmers at the American Cinematheque have taken to heart with “Bleak Week,” an annual celebration of downbeat movies. Since its inception in 2022, the series has become one of Los Angeles’ most eagerly anticipated repertory events with screenings spread across the Cinematheque’s three venues, and last year the Paris Theater in New York joined the fun with its own Bleak Week programming that featured in person appearances by Ari Aster, Isabella Rossellini and Paul Schrader.

Now in its fourth year, Bleak Week is expanding across the country — and, via the Prince Charles Cinema, across the pond to London — to hold screenings at 11 venues in eight cities. The festival kicks off in Los Angeles and Chicago (at the Music Box Theatre) June 1 to 7, continues in Portland (Hollywood Theatre) and Minneapolis (Trylon Cinema) June 6 to 12, then heads to New York,...

Jeremy Strong Describes Serving on the Cannes 2025 Jury as ‘Like “Conclave” with Champagne’
Image
Cannes 2025 has come to a close. Now, with a bit of time to reflect, jury member Jeremy Strong is opening up about his experience basking in cinema’s glow for almost two weeks. During the final press conference for the festival (as per Variety), Strong ended up comparing his involvement on the jury to a rather popular film from last year.

“This has been a really wonderful experience,” he said, “a really connected experience with these people — it’s like ‘Conclave’ with champagne. It’s really great.”

This reference was also timely as just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Cannes, an actual new Pope was recently welcomed and honored at the Vatican in Rome. “Conclave,” starring Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow, follows the church’s Dean of Cardinals as he works to elect a new Pope from a group of vainglorious wheeler-dealers. Welcome to Lynchland, a slight but enjoyable documentary devoted to the life and work of America’s premier cinematic surrealist, received an emotional reception Wednesday afternoon at the Cannes Film Festival. The love for David Lynch, who died at age 78 in January, was palpable inside the premiere in Cannes’ fabled Palais des Festivals, with numerous fans and industry admirers of the auteur in tears as the lights came up.

Lynch’s oldest son, Riley Lynch, was on hand to introduce the documentary alongside its director, French filmmaker Stéphane Ghez.

“This festival really meant a lot to my dad and it’s just so cool to be here,” said Riley Lynch, 33 years old and an aspiring filmmaker himself. “The last time I was here was in 2002 — when my dad was president of the jury — and I had my 10th birthday party here. Sharon Stone brought out the cake — pretty cool,” he said.

New Pope’s Older Brother: Leo Xiv Watched Movie ‘Conclave’ Just Before Entering Real Conclave
Image
One of the new pope’s brothers has given an interview to a Chicago TV station, shedding light on how Cardinal Robert Prevost prepared for the Vatican conclave that elected him pontiff. Turns out the prelate boned up with help from an Oscar-nominated film.

John Prevost, the middle of three Prevost brothers (Louis is the eldest and Robert – now Pope Leo Xiv — is the youngest) told Chicago’s NBC affiliate Wmaq-tv that he talked with Robert a day before the conclave began.

“I said, ‘Are you ready for this? Did you watch the movie Conclave, so you know how to behave?’ And he had just finished watching the movie,” Prevost laughed, “so he knew how to behave.”

Prevost explained, “I wanted to take his mind off of it [the real conclave], you know, laugh about something because this is now an awesome responsibility.”

White Smoke Above The Vatican: A New Pope Elected By Conclave
Image
After two days of contemplation and balloting, a new Pope has been elected.

White smoke emanating from the Sistine Chapel chimney today to inform the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics and everyone else that the conclave of 133 cardinals have determined a new Bishop of Rome. Who the successor to St. Peter and the progressive Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on April 21, is has not yet been made public.

Having said that, as cable news and the internet goes wall-to-wall white smoke, the unveiling of the newly appointed Pontiff is expected within a hour or so to appear on the balcony. At that time the world will learn what name the now elevated former cardinal has chosen for his Papacy.

In a ceremony reaching back to 1274 in its present form, a Pope is elected from the cardinals’ ranks with a required two-thirds majority. Achieving that majority is what leads...

Catholic Cardinals Reportedly Consulted ‘Conclave’ Film Ahead of Ongoing Vote for Next Pope
Image
Ahead of the 2025 conclave to find Pope Francis’ successor, Catholic cardinals reportedly consulted Edward Berger’s 2024 acclaimed drama film of the same name.

According to Politico, a number of cardinals who are a part of the ongoing conclave that began Wednesday in Rome watched Conclave as a “helpful research tool” to learn more about the process of selecting a new pope.

“Some have watched [Conclave] in the cinema,” a cleric told Politico, with the outlet adding that “The film is seen as remarkably accurate even by cardinals” and has been useful “at a time when so many of the conclave participants have little experience of Vatican politics and protocol.”

After Robert Prevost was named the new Pope on Thursday, his brother, John Prevost, told NBC News that Leo Xiv watched Conclave before the real-life conclave commenced.

“And I said, ‘Well, are you ready for this?’” Prevost recalled. “I said, ‘Did...

No Pope Yet: Vatican Conclave Blows Black Smoke On 1st Day Of Vote For New Pontiff
Image
There is no new Pope.

Yet.

Hours later than expected, black smoke was seen blowing out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican on the end of the first day of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis.

With most cable news channels cutting quickly to live shots of the Vatican, the smoke was first visable at 9 pm Rome time.

As the likes of CNN, MSNBC and Fox covered other news like the flare up between nuclear powers India and Pakistan, the Bcc had a locked feed on the Vatican chimney almost all day.

When a Pope is elected, it will be white smoke coming from the chimney.

This conclave has 133 cardinals voting, a record for the ancient process. Appointed by Francis over his 12-year time as Pope, many of the participants relatively new to their positions for their first conclave. In that context and...

The movie won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar and has since seen a boom in popularity on streaming following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, and now it looks like the actual cardinals who will choose the next Pope are among its viewers.

According to Politico, some of the 133 high-ranking clerics set to take part in the conclave that started on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, watched the movie Conclave for guidance. The Conclave to elect a new Pope officially begins today, and the 2024 film detailing the election process has seen a surge on streaming. Starring in the lead roles in Conclave are Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, the former of whom was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the film. Conclave began streaming on Peacock after it concluded its theatrical run, but last month it vanished from the platform. It wasn’t until it resurfaced on Prime Video the day after Pope Francis’ death that the film immediately jumped to #1. It wasn’t until the release of Another Simple Favor that Conclave dropped to #2 on Prime Video streaming charts, but it’s still been a major success for the streamer. It earned scores of 93% from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to Fiennes and Tucci, Conclave also stars John Lithgow, who has been tapped to...

Image
We’re not blowing smoke: Two movies about the Catholic Church have had surging viewership online following the death of Pope Francis April 21 due to complications from a stroke.

The very premise of “Conclave” is now happening once more for the Church. After Francis’s death, the selection process for the next pope is about to begin; the pontiff nominations were fictionalized in Edward Berger’s Oscar-nominated 2024 film starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.

In turn, viewership of “Conclave” increased by 283 percent on Monday, according to Luminate from Variety. “Conclave” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and can be purchased on various PVOD platforms. “Conclave” had 1.8 million minutes viewed on April 20, and as of April 22, it went to 6.9 million minutes viewed. Where to watch ‘Conclave’ online as you wait for the real conclave to begin
Image
Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, died April 21 at age 88. His funeral will take place on Saturday. Within 15 to 20 days, the College of Cardinals will gather at the Sistine Chapel to start the process of the papal conclave, which will conclude with the election of a new pope.

We mean no disrespect to the late Pope by noting this coincidence. Still, there will likely be more interest in this papal conclave than usual due to the film Conclave, which was released last year and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay earlier this month.

Conclave tells a fictional story about Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes), the dean of the College of Cardinals, who leads a conclave after the death of the sitting pope. As various contenders representing different schools of thought jockey for position, Lawrence investigates their closets for skeletons and finds plenty. The thrilling drama,...

Image
In 2024, the Ralph Fiennes-led Conclave was just a political thriller following the organizing of a conclave to elect the next pope. Unfortunately, 2025 turned the film into a mandatory watch after Pope Francis' sudden death on Easter Monday.

Pope Francis had been the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State for over a year, since election in the 2013 papal conclave until his death at the age of 88. As the world mourned the Pope, people turned to ask questions about what happens next. Although it's a work of fiction with a delicate subject about the secrets and scandals of major papal candidates, Conclave has become a major hit and became the No. 1 film worldwide, per FlixPatrol.

Even before Pope Francis' death, Conclave marked a great film to watch over the Easter weekend, and the movie started trending on Apr. 19 in many places around the world, including...
