Darren Star Reveals If He Would Return For 'Younger' Revival If It Was Picked Up

Darren Star has created some pretty iconic TV shows over the years.

From Beverly Hills, 9021 to Sex and the City, Grosse Pointe and the most recent Emily In Paris.

Prior to Emily in Paris, Darren also had the TV Land hit Younger, which starred Sutton Foster, Peter Hermann, Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Miriam Shor, Nico Tortorella and more.

In a recent interview, Darren opened up about the streaming success of Younger on Netflix, and if he would return for a revival if asked.

Keep reading to find out more…

“When I was doing Younger, it was made to be bingeable, every episode sort of had a cliffhanger. I thought, Oh, this could get on streaming, it’s going to feel very streamable and bingeable,” Darren told Deadline. “So I was hoping but you never know — I mean, my dream was to see the show get acquired by Netflix, and it was wonderful when it happened.

Darren Star On ‘Younger’s Streaming Resurgence & Prospects Of Revival
Image
Of the hundreds of half-hour comedies available on streaming, one title dominated the U.S. rankings for the first five months of 2025, Darren Star’s 2015 TV Land series Younger, whose seven seasons took seven of the Top 10 spots in U.S. viewership for January-May for its Netflix run, according to data recently released by Luminate. Season 1 ranked the highest, at #3, logging 2.4B views, with the rest of the seasons charting at #5-#10 with viewership between 1.4B-1.9B.

Younger‘s ascend was almost instant after all seven seasons of the series, starring Sutton Foster as a 40-year old single mom pretending to be 26 in order to land an assistant job in publishing, were made available on Netflix domestically in January, almost a decade after the show made its debut on TV Land in March 2015. The series,...

Chase’n’Dick.

We wrapped up May discussing Stanley Kubrick’s controversial adaptation of The Shining (listen) and worshipping Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker (listen) before kicking off June with a canoe trip with John Boorman’s Deliverance (listen).

Now it’s time for our annual Joel Schumacher episode and, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his neon-infused take on the Caped Crusader, we’re turning our attention to 1995’s Batman Forever.

The superhero film finds Val Kilmer taking over the reins of Bruce Wayne/Batman from departing actor Michael Keaton. As Bruce struggles with repressed memories that deliver him to Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), Batman must confront a pair of new villains who threaten Gotham City: former prosecutor turned crime boss, Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones), and former Wayne Enterprises employee turned Riddler, Edward Nygma (Jim Carrey).

Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
Joe Manganiello remembers his friend, the late Paul Reubens, in a heartfelt moment during a new interview
Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
The new in-depth documentary, Pee-Wee As Himself, made a splash at Sundance as audiences were granted access to never-before-seen footage and a final interview with the Pee-Wee star himself — Paul Reubens. The documentary was recently added to HBO Max (is it time to call it that yet?) and features a soul-baring recount of events straight from Reubens, as well as interviews from close individuals, including sister Abby Rubenfeld, artists Gary Panter and Wayne White, actors Lynne Stewart, John Moody, Alison Mork, Natasha Lyonne, S. Epatha Merkerson, Laurence Fishburne, Debi Mazar, David Arquette, Laraine Newman, and Cassandra Peterson, and filmmakers Tim Burton and Judd Apatow.

The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with Joe Manganiello while promoting his series, Deal or No Deal Island, when he reflected on his friend Reubens. Manganiello can be seen alongside Reubens in Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, and the actor stated, “I love Paul and I miss Paul a lot.

Where to Watch ‘Pee-wee as Himself’
Image
Director Matt Wolf spent two years interviewing Paul Reubens for his new HBO documentary “Pee-Wee as Himself,” not realizing that the actor was dying of cancer.

As he told TheWrap at Sundance earlier this year, “I did have the sense that Paul was motivated to tell his story in a way he hadn’t been before, that it was going to be challenging for him, but that he threw himself into that process and was fully committed to being himself on camera in a way that was totally uncomfortable and something he had never done.”

“The idea that these would be the last words that he would share publicly with the world was completely off my radar,” he continued.

Here’s how to watch the two-part documentary about the Pee-wee Herman star.

When will “Pee-wee as Himself” be on Max?

It premieres Friday, May 23, at 8:00 pm Et/Pt on HBO and Max.

The ’Pee-wee as Himself’ Trailer Is a Party, and You’re Invited
Image
The man behind Pee-wee Herman, Paul Reubens (Blow), is ready to truly reveal himself. It’s just unfortunate that his definitive documentary, Pee-wee as Himself, had to come out posthumously.

The HBO Original two-part documentary directed by Matt Wolf premieres Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO. Put together, it’s a three-hour, 20-minute portrait of Reubens. And that’s exactly how the two parts will air on linear HBO — together. You can watch them however you want on Max.

Pee-wee as Himself is centered on “a soul-baring interview” with Reubens, per the synopsis, and is “a window into his never-before-discussed personal life.” It was a particularly lengthy soul-baring interview: Pee-wee as Himself is pieced together from more than 40 hours of interview footage filmed before Reubens’ death in 2023. Wolf also had at his disposal more than 1,000 hours of archival footage and “tens of thousands of never-before-seen photographs” from Reubens’ personal collections,...

"For the first time, meet the man behind the character." Starring Paul Reubens, about Paul Reubens, featuring Paul Reubens, in the definitive life story film examining Paul Reubens (and his iconic character Pee-wee Herman). The doc starts out revisiting Reubens' childhood and his desire to be an actor, inspired by the iconic TV shows like "Howdy Doody," "Captain Kangaroo," and "I Love Lucy." Subsuming himself into the character of Pee-wee, Reubens hides his personal life, and recognizes too late that fame makes for a complicated companion... Later, Reubens talks candidly about his fame as a pop culture icon and the lows he endured as he faced rumors, vilification, and the vitriol of the media. With guests including Abby Rubenfeld, Gary Panter Wayne White,...

Paul Reubens Comes Out as Gay in Posthumous Documentary
Image
In the final months before his death in July 2023, Paul Reubens got a chance to get a “message in at the last minute,” as he put it. Sitting down for over 40 hours of interviews for the HBO documentary Pee-wee as Himself, the actor, comedian, and Pee-wee Herman creator came out as gay, discussed his “devastating” scandals, and offered new insight into a life that he had always kept secret.

“I had many, many secret relationships,” Reubens says in the documentary, which premiered this week at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. “I was secretive about my sexuality even to my friends [out of] self-hatred or self-preservation,” he says at another point. “I was conflicted about sexuality. But fame was way more complicated.”

Pee-wee as Himself was first announced in 2021, with Matt Wolf directing and Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie serving as executive producers. Reubens himself consented to the project and spent “several hundred hours...

Hollywood Squares cast blasted as ‘epic fail’ and ‘not a game show’ by fans
Image
Some Hollywood Squares viewers expressed disapproval of the rebooted game show.

It officially premiered on Thursday. It features the classic format: a nine-by-nine grid of large squares that creates a giant tic-tac-toe board.

Inside each of those squares is a celebrity, with many of them comedians or actors.

Actress and daytime talk show host Drew Barrymore is the current resident of the famed center square.

The show also has a new host, with former NFL star and CBS Mornings host Nate Burleson following in the footsteps of Tom Bergeron, John Davidson, and Peter Marshall.

While some fans seemed to love the game show and Nate as the host, not all viewers seemed enthused by the rest of the Hollywood Squares cast.

Hollywood Squares cast featured Tyra Banks, Tiffany Haddish, and Drew Carey

After postponing its premiere for a week due to the California wildfires, the Hollywood Squares reboot aired on January 16 with back-to-back episodes.

Younger: Where Else You've Seen The Cast
Image
While Younger was just a little TV series that started on TV Land, it blew up to become hugely popular thanks to the pretty stellar Younger cast. Foster stars as Liza Miller, a 40-year-old divorcee who realizes she can pass off as a 20-something woman and lies about her age to get a job in the publishing industry. She then makes new friends but has to keep lying about her age to protect her job. Some actors have been in the business for decades, and some have lengthy resumes in the theater world.

Hilary Duff may have been the most recognizable name in the cast. Still, fans might recognize other cast members from projects they have been in, with Foster in the lead role and names like Debi Mazar and Miriam Shor in key supporting roles. Many of the Younger cast members have also already gone on to star in other projects,...

Madonna's Biopic Could Become a TV Series
Image
You would think due to the longevity and incredible success of Madonna's legendary music career, it would be easy to get a movie about her life off the ground. When one hears the news that Britney Spears has a biopic in the works with a hot director attached to it, it seems like a head-scratcher that the Queen of Pop doesn't have one moving full speed ahead. As it turns out, it hasn't been for a lack of trying Madonna has revealed that the delays are due to producers and agents who want to "downsize" the scope of the project.

Madonna took to Instagram to tell her 19.8 million followers what's going on with her biopic after spending four years developing it, with an initial draft of the screenplay being handled by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody and further revisions made by Erin Cressida Wilson. Madonna halted development on the film, which...

Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer in Kaos (2024)
Kaos | Netflix cancels Jeff Goldblum show after one series
Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer in Kaos (2024)
Netflix has decided against making another series of Kaos, its new show starring Jeff Goldblum. More on it being cancelled here.

Before she created Kaos, which was revently released on Netflix, Charlie Covell wrote several terrific shows including Truelove, a dark drama for Channel 4 with a brilliant ensemble cast including Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters, and The End Of The F***ing World, about a teenager who believes himself to be a psychopath, which is now on Netflix and is well worth watching.

The synopsis for Kaos reads as follows:

Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. Until he wakes up and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere. Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades (David Thewlis), the God of the Underworld,...

Kaos: Netflix Cancels Mythological Drama Starring Jeff Goldblum After One Season
Image
We had a feeling that this announcement was coming after star Aurora Perrineau shared and then deleted a cryptic social media post late last night, and Variety has now confirmed that Netflix has cancelled Kaos after a single season.

The black comedy drama, which stars Jeff Goldblum as the all-powerful King of the Gods, Zeus, only premiered on the streamer in late August. Though reviews were mostly positive (76% on Rotten Tomatoes), the 8-episode series arrived without much fanfare.

Though the show's viewership numbers were nothing special, they were far from disastrous.

Kaos appeared in Netflix’s top 10 charts for English-language series in each of its first four weeks on the streamer, topping out at No. 3 for the week of Sept. 2-8. It earned 14.9 million views (measured by total viewing time divided by running time) over those weeks.

Perrineau has since shared the following.

Thanks for the journey #Kaos ⚡️ pic.twitter.

Can ‘Kaos’ Be Saved After Shock Netflix Cancellation? Fans React
Image
Netflix viewers have descended into Kaos after it was announced that the well-received and deeply ambitious series was canceled after just one season. Written and created by The End of the F***ing World’s Charlie Covell, the eight-part comedy was released on the streaming platform in late August. In a darkly humorous reimagining of Greek mythology, six humans learned that they are parts of an ancient prophecy, clashing with Greek Gods. The star-studded cast included Jeff Goldblum as Zeus (in a tracksuit), Janet McTeer as Queen Hera, Nabhaan Rizwan as their rebellious son Dionysus, Aurora Perrineau as Eurydice, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Rakie Ayola as Persephone, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Debi Mazar as Medusa, Billie Piper as Cassandra, Stephen Dillane as Prometheus, Steven Dillane, and Fady Elsayed. And yet, just two months after its premiere, the cancellation came on Tuesday, October 8. Perrineau initially shared the ungodly...

‘Kaos’ Canceled After Single Season at Netflix
Image
Netflix has decided not to return to Mount Olympus, canceling its series Kaos after a single season.

The decision comes about six weeks after the dark comedy, based on Greek and Roman mythology and created by Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), made its debut on the streamer. Kaos appeared in Netflix’s top 10 charts for English-language series in each of its first four weeks, topping out at No. 3 for the week of Sept. 2-8. It earned 14.9 million views (measured by total viewing time divided by running time) over those weeks, a middling number by the streamer’s standards.

In the United States, the show had 3.34 million views as of Sept. 8, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings (viewing totals for subsequent weeks aren’t yet available).

Kaos puts Greek and Roman mythology in a present-day setting. The series stars Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, who has chained fellow god...
