Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe teases St Elmo's Fire sequel
Rob Lowe believes it is a "super valid" time to make a sequel to St. Elmo's Fire. The 61-year-old actor starred in the original 1985 movie - which followed a group of graduates as they adjusted to life after college - as William 'Billy' Hicks and he's set to reprise the role of his saxophone-playing alter ego for a second movie, and he's insisted it is a great time in the characters' lives to see what they are doing now.He told People magazine: "We're working on the script, and it's really getting good."I think it's super valid to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life, because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — 'What do I do when I get out of college?' " The Brat Pack film was directed by...

Paramount is making The Stand again, this time as a movie
Image
Stephen King published The Stand in 1978; he's said it was his attempt to create an epic in the style of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, but this is Stephen King we're talking about, so things get twisted. It's about a deadly disease that wipes out the great majority of the human population, leaving the remaining few to divide themselves into good and evil camps. There's a malevolent, otherworldly villain named Randall Flagg who I suppose is our Sauron, except he wears a lot more denim.

Anyway, The Stand has remain consistently popular for decades and has spawned two TV adaptations: one in the '90s and another in 2020. Neither version was a smash hit, but the '90s one has a cheesy charm to it; it stars folk like Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe. The 2020 version is more of a prestige effort but ended up being less memorable,...

Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ to get feature adaptation, Channing Tatum is ‘Roofman,’ and more of today’s top stories
Image
Gold Derby's top news stories for June 25, 2025.

The Stand: Here we go again

The Hollywood Reporter dished on the details of a new adaptation of Stephen King's tome The Stand, which Doug Liman is apparently directing. And if you're thinking to yourself, "Wasn't there literally just a television adaptation? Wasn't Whoopi Goldberg in it? And that was different from the Rob Lowe one? Am I hallucinating?" Yes, you are correct. No, you're not hallucinating. And maybe go drink some water.

"There! Up in the ceiling! It's Roofman!"

Channing Tatum has teamed up with director Derek Cianfrance for the true-life crime story of an escaped convict holed up in a Toys"R"Us. The film, also starring Kirsten Dunst and Peter Dinklage, opens in theaters on Oct. 10.

Road House Remake Director to Reboot Iconic Stephen King Story (WIth 1 Big Change)
Image
After reimagining Road House, filmmaker Doug Liman is set to reboot the Stephen King story The Stand. The tale has already spawned two TV series adaptations in the past, but Liman will be making a big change with this version, as it would be a singular feature film.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Liman is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of The Stand for Paramount Pictures. Tyler Hompson of Cross Creek Pictures is also serving as a producer on the project. Currently, a screenwriter hasn't been named, but with the change in format, they may have their work cut out for them with this adaptation.

The lengthy novel has provided plenty of source material for its TV series adaptations, and it may be a challenge to effectively tell the story with the same impact condensed into one movie. According to the report, Liman's vision is for a one-off story,...

Doug Liman to Direct New Adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ for Paramount
Image
Stephen King’s “The Stand” is getting a new adaptation, with Paramount securing Doug Liman to direct the new adaptation of the author’s apocalyptic 1978 tome.

Liman will also produce along with Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek Pictures, with the two previously collaborating on “American Made,” the based-on-a-true-story drama starring Tom Cruise.

Largely thought to be one of King’s greatest accomplishments, “The Stand” takes place in the aftermath of a pandemic caused by a weaponized virus (dubbed Captain Trips), where the survivors are either swayed by the forces of good or those of evil, personified by Randall Flagg, who would go on to become a recurring figure in some of King’s other work, most notably the “Dark Tower” series of novels.

In 1990 King updated and expanded the novel, moving the events from 1980 to 1990 and including more than 400 pages that were cut from the initial printing. The resulting book,...

Doug Liman to Direct Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ for Paramount
Image
Stephen King’s “The Stand” may finally be heading to the big screen.

Filmmaker Doug Liman is attached to direct a feature film of the post-apocalyptic bestseller for Paramount Pictures, with Cross Creek Pictures’ Tyler Thompson on board to produce. The project does not yet have a script, however, so development may take some time as Liman and the studio winnow King’s novel — which runs 1,153 pages in its 1990 unabridged version — into a single movie. But the studio sees the movie as a priority and is moving forward aggressively to make it happen.

“The Stand,” first published in 1978, was previously adapted as a television miniseries for ABC in 1994, starring Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Ruby Dee and Laura San Giacomo; and again for Paramount+ (née CBS All Access) in 2020, starring James Marsden, Odessa Young, Alexander Skarsgard, Whoopi Goldberg and Amber Heard. However, the story’s epic scope — using the...

Doug Liman to direct big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand
Doug Liman at an event for Great Directors (2009)
THR reports that Doug Liman is set to direct The Stand for Paramount Pictures. The novel, which is considered to be one of Stephen King’s best, deals with a deadly pandemic that kills nearly the entire population. The survivors are drawn to two opposing communities, one led by the kind, prophetic Mother Abagail and the other by the sinister, demonic Randall Flagg. This all leads to a final battle between good and evil. The search is now on for a writer to tackle the project. In addition to directing, Liman will also produce alongside Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek Pictures.

At 1,152 pages, The Stand is King’s longest book. While you might think that Paramount will be viewing this as something that will span multiple films, sources tell THR that “Liman and the studio have a particular take and that the feature would be a one-off, not a multi-movie endeavor.

Rob Lowe Wants to Appear on 9-1-1: Nashville and the Producers Should Pick Up the Phone
Image
Rob Lowe was great on 9-1-1: Lone Star, and it’s a shame that the show concluded.

Now Ryan Murphy has a golden opportunity to revisit that well.

Lowe has expressed interest in appearing on the new show, 9-1-1: Nashville.

(Kevin Estrada/Fox)

The 9-1-1 universe is expanding with a new spin-off this fall.

And the new show is led by Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

As a matter of fact, Don Sharpe marks O’Donnell’s first show and role following his run as G. Callen on NCIS: Los Angeles.

Having O’Donnell back on TV is going to be a fun treat, and I can’t wait for the season premiere.

(Robert Voets/CBS)

He is the perfect choice to work as a firefighter on the spin-off, and some fun names would surround him.

Unfortunately, 9-1-1: Lone Star...

Victor Webster Dishes on Pie, Romance, and Playing Chad in Pie to Die For: A Hannah Swensen Mystery
Image
Victor Webster has played action heroes, sci-fi bad boys, and even dabbled in stockbroking, but he’s never looked more at home than he does in Hallmark’s cozy world of sleuthing and sweet treats.

Returning as Chad Norton in Pie to Die For: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, Victor brings heart, humor, and a slow-burn charm that’s made fans root for his character’s blossoming romance with Hannah.

We had a chance to sit down with him on Zoom to chat about it.

(Hallmark Mystery/Screenshot)

“I feel so at home with Hallmark doing these movies,” he says with a smile. “It’s like a family.”

Victor’s path to Hallmark is anything but typical.

These 7 TV Shows Had Millions of Fans — and Got Canceled Anyway
Image
TV has always been a numbers game — or so we thought.

Traditionally, when a show flopped in the TV ratings, it got the axe. End of story. But lately, even hit shows pulling in millions of viewers have been cut short for reasons that have nothing to do with performance.

Whether it’s behind-the-scenes drama, budget woes, or baffling network decisions, these shows all had the numbers, but still got canceled.

(Courtesy of CBS)

Let’s dig into the ones that never should’ve been sent packing.

The Society – Netflix

The Society was a smash hit — a Lord of the Flies-style teen drama brimming with potential.

(Seacia Pavao/Netflix)

It was smart, stylish, and delivered serious thrills as a group of high schoolers returned from a class trip to find their town mysteriously abandoned by every adult.

Which is Better: The Will Trent TV Series or The Books? Cast Your Vote!
Image
Since it premiered in January 2023, ABC’s Will Trent has been a fan favorite with its character arcs and intriguing cases.

However, many fans are divided because some details have deviated from Karin Slaughter’s best-selling series.

Adapting a long book series is challenging and will never be a direct adaptation. The executive producers, Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen, strived to include key twists but add their own signature.

(Zac Popik/Disney)

Let’s examine the key differences between the two and which version is superior.

Changing the Casting of the Characters

Many diehard fans complain that Will does not look like how he was described in the book, which was tall and blond, since Ramón Rodríguez is dark and Latino.

However, his version still features the essence of the character. He acts socially awkward, and connects to Will’s storylines, making viewers feel for his intense trauma with foster care and dyslexia.

Invisible Son: Ignoring JJ Is the One Major Mistake In Jack and Jennifer’s Return on Days of Our Lives
Image
Jack and Jennifer’s visit to Salem was too short.

I’ve always loved this Days of Our Lives couple. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a journalist because Jennifer was.

But why the heck are Jack and Jennifer ignoring JJ now that he’s back in town?

(Screenshot/Peacock) Mourning Abigail Makes Sense, but Did Jack and Jennifer Forget They Have Another Child?

JJ has been missing in action since before his parents came to town. But the way Days of Our Lives ignored his existence once they landed was ridiculous.

Jennifer was disappointed that JJ wasn’t home when she first came in, but Jack said that it was okay because he had to go visit the paper anyway — and that was the last time either of them mentioned their son.

Ostenibly, they were in Salem to attend John’s funeral and offer comfort and support to Marlena.

Beyond Alexis Bledel: 7 other times actors withdrew themselves from Emmy consideration
Image
For your consideration… or not.

Earlier this month, Alexis Bledel withdrew herself from Emmy consideration due to a rule change. The actress, who won Best Drama Guest Actress in 2017 for The Handmaid's Tale, made an appearance in the show's series finale, but the new rule prohibits her from competing in guest for the same show because of her prior 2018 nomination in supporting. Instead of submitting in supporting, Bledel took herself out entirely. And she's far from the first star to do so.

Here are seven other times actors voluntarily bowed out of the Emmy race.

John Larroquette, Night Court

Larroquette dominated Best Comedy Supporting Actor in the '80s, winning the category four years in a row from 1985 to 1988 for his turn as Dan Fielding. And then he decided four was enough, withdrawing his name in 1989, three years before Night Court ended. "As we got to that fifth season, I...

5 Best Adam Scott Movies & TV Shows To Watch After Severance
Image
I'm not breaking new ground when I say that Adam Scott is excellent on "Severance." This isn't a hot take; it's decidedly room-temperature. Technically, Scott plays two characters on Dan Erickson's twisted take on a "workplace comedy," even though they are the same person: Mark Scout, a miserable man who lost his wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) in a tragic car accident, and to deal with his overwhelming grief, who takes a job at Lumon Industries that offers a procedure called "severance" that splits his consciousness into two distinct parts. When he leaves work, he's stuck being plain old Mark Scout, but at work, on the "severed" floor, he's Mark S., a willing acolyte of Lumon who has no idea that he ever had a wife, let alone lost one.

As his innie (Mark S.) and outie (Mark Scout), Scott delivers one of his very best performances; in the show's critically adored sophomore season,...

Chris Pratt is returning to his roots in a new dark comedy series that is currently in development at Amazon from John Owen Lowe, the creator of the Netflix series Unstable. ‘9-1-1: Nashville’: Could Rob Lowe Reprise Role of ‘Lone Star’s Owen Strand on New Spinoff?
Image
9-1-1 crossovers have been rare over the years — due to scheduling and budget — for the original series and Lone Star, which ended after five seasons on Fox in February 2025. Besides one in which three members of the 118 (9-1-1) headed to Austin to help out with a wildfire, there were just mentions and minor characters appearing. But could that change with the newest spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, joining ABC’s lineup this fall? Rob Lowe, who played Captain Owen Strand for all five seasons of Lone Star, is open to it. “Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother,” he told Decider. (Chad Lowe played Owen’s half-brother and directed episodes of 9-1-1 and Lone Star.) “Chad Lowe is the executive producer, director of 9-1-1: Nashville. And so I’m just waiting for my phone to ring. I mean, you know, I hired him on Lone Star. I think turnabout is fair play.

Rob Lowe Breaks His Silence on '9-1-1: Nashville' and Reveals If He'd Reprise His 'Lone Star' Character
Image
After five seasons, 9-1-1: Lone Star aired its final episode earlier this year, bidding farewell to Rob Lowe's Captain Owen Strand for what appeared to be the final time. Now, ABC is turning to a new spin-off to fill the void in 9-1-1: Nashville, complete with a new team all under the control of the canceled series's old showrunner, Rashad Raisani. Strand's story may not be over just yet, however. In a recent conversation with Decider about his Atkins partnership, Lowe was asked about the possibility of popping in for the Tennessee-based show when it premieres this fall, and not only did he express an openness to the idea, but he cited a more personal connection to the show he could hit up about making that a reality — his brother, Chad Lowe.

"Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother," the star responded.

‘Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service’ Heats Up Fox’s Summer Slate With Another Unscripted Hit, Growing Audience 27% Since Debut & Continuing Network’s No. 1 Momentum With 18-49 Demo
Image
Exclusive: Fox has lit a fire under its summer primetime lineup with the debut of yet another offering from chef Gordon Ramsay.

Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service launched May 21 as the network’s most-streamed unscripted summer debut on record. Since then, the audience has continued to grow, with Episode 3 posting a 27% gain in total viewers over the premiere, per live + same-day Nielsen data.

The series has also seen 21% growth among adults 18-49, which remains an important (and increasingly difficult) demographic to target on television.

Ramsay has now set a personal record as well, starring in more currently airing shows than any TV personality in history, Fox says. With the additions of Secret Service and next season’s holiday show Next Level Baker, that brings Ramsay to eight concurrent shows on the Fox slate.

Fox ended the 2024-25 broadcast season on a promising note, averaging a 0.75 rating among adults 18-49 in live + 7-day measurements.

Inside Gold Derby’s first digital issue
Image
I’ll admit it: I don’t love gambling, so odds are always a bit of mystery for me. What I do love, though, is watching the odds change on GoldDerby.com, as momentum builds and more awards experts and thousands of users share and update their predictions on our website. Who’s up and who’s down in a given race can swing on a big episode (that shocking death on The Last of Us), a scene-stealing speech, or a savvy, headline-grabbing FYC stunt that cements the show in the minds of voters as ballots land in their inboxes.

Never let it be said that Emmy season is boring. While there will always be repeat nominees who seem to earn their slots on name recognition alone, this season promises plenty of surprises. Who would have predicted an unknown British teenager would break our hearts in Adolescence; Owen Cooper is the...

Francis Ford Coppola’s Insane “More Fire” Call Turned the 71%-Rated Film’s Scene Hazardous
Image
Francis Ford Coppola’s never been one to play it safe, but his demand on the set of The Outsiders took things to a whole new level. In one of the film’s most intense sequences, what was meant to be a carefully choreographed blaze quickly spiraled into a genuine hazard.

Crew members were reportedly on edge, and the set turned chaotic. The 71%-rated film still holds its iconic status, but that one moment almost burned more than just the scene.

When “more fire” meant Too much fire: Francis Ford Coppola’s fiery vision in The Outsiders nearly backfired Francis Ford Coppola | Image by: Rita Molnár, licensed under Cc By-sa 2.5 via Wikimedia Common

Francis Ford Coppola literally lit The Outsiders on fire. During the intense church-burning scene, Coppola shouted for “more fire,” pushing for realism. But that craving nearly sparked disaster when the controlled flames flared up into a real hazard.

Actors Who Had Violent Fights On Set
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

You may be surprised to hear this, but a film set can be a pretty tense workplace. Whether you're leading a crew of dozens while trying to spin millions in studio money into something resembling art, or you're one of the many cogs in the elaborate machinery that keeps a film production on track to be effective and make deadline, there's typically a lot on your plate when it comes to working on a set.

As it turns out, that includes some of our favorite stars. In some cases, it's pushed them to throw punches. Physical fights on film sets tend to be the type of thing that go down in show business legend -- and as such, many instances have differing perspectives from the parties involved about what actually happened. Still, whether it's stress, ego clashes, or just the...

‘Brats’ director Andrew McCarthy reflects on Brat Pack legacy, reuniting with ’80s icons, and possible ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ revival
Image
"The movie is really about the passing of time," Brats director Andrew McCarthy tells Gold Derby. "I turned 60 not that long ago and I realized that I had begun to look at events of my life in a different way than I used to."

For the first time in decades, McCarthy reunites with fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Ally Sheedy, along with other stars of that era like Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton, and Lea Thompson, to discuss their rise to stardom in the 1980s and how the term "Brat Pack" — coined by journalist David Blum in an article for New York Magazine — impacted their careers.

Reflecting further, McCarthy says his fascination lies less with the Brat Pack itself and more with how perspectives on life evolve with time. "When I was 22, we hated it — all of us," he says. "We felt stigmatized — it was very limiting.

9-1-1 Stars Tease What's Next for Buck and Hen in Season 9
Image
9-1-1stars Oliver Stark and Aisha Hinds discuss the future for Buck and Hen in the series' ninth season.

Speaking to TV Insider, Stark and Hinds, who portray Evan "Buck" Buckley and Henrietta "Hen" Wilson on the series, opened up about what the future holds for their respective characters, especially as 9-1-1 continues to move forward from the shocking death of Peter Krause's Robert "Bobby" Nash towards the end of Season 8. "For me, the main thing is that the kind of gravitas of losing Bobby is used as a catalyst to mature Buck. I think the growth has been there over the seasons, but I think this is a real opportunity to take him into his next iteration, whatever that ends up being," Stark said. "But I think a more grounded worldly Buck can come out of this. I don’t know what that will look like,...

'Parks and Recreation' Star Amy Poehler Releases Trailer for Unofficial Spin-Off 'Philly Justice'
Image
Parks and Recreation was best known for its fast, wacky humor and lovable characters, as audiences spent seven seasons with the employees of the Pawnee local government's Parks and Rec department. The series featured the usual hallmarks of a hit sitcom, including some gigantic guest stars. But, unlike more self-aware shows like Community, Parks & Rec rarely went meta. But Amy Poehler, who led the series as the overly optimistic Leslie Knope, recently revealed that the cast of Parks & Rec filmed an entire other TV show while working on the hit NBC sitcom, and the first trailer has just dropped online.

As a result of working on a movie/TV set for months, actors tend to make their own fun. But, very rarely do they produce an entirely new TV series. Philly Justice is the name of the fake show that Poehler, Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, and Kathryn Hahn...

Amy Poehler Gives ‘Parks and Rec’ Fans the Greatest Gift: The ‘Philly Justice’ Trailer with Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, and Kathryn Hahn

It’s not quite “Threat Level Midnight,” but it’s close — and real. Amy Poehler has revealed the faux spoof TV show trailer for “Philly Justice,” a fake series she and “Parks and Recreation” co-stars Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, Paul Rudd, Nick Offerman, and Kathryn Hahn made for fun while filming the hit NBC sitcom.

The existence of the project has been teased throughout Poehler’s podcast “Good Hang” and now, finally, its trailer is out. The tagline reads: “Philadelphia has never been more in need of justice.”

“Parks and Rec” creator Mike Schur, producer Morgan Sackett, and stars Scott and Jones joined Poehler for world premiere of the “Philly Justice” trailer on “Good Hang.”

“This one is for the fans. We heard you loud and clear,” Poehler said, adding that “Philly Justice” was conceived after looking at a cast photo on the set of “Parks and Rec” during Season...

Ilana Glazer Calls Out the “Broligarchy’s Speeding of the Onslaught of Fascism” at Webby Awards
Image
The 2025 Webby Awards theme may have been “All Good,” as the annual ceremony celebrated the best of the internet from the past year, but host Ilana Glazer wasn’t shy about going after politics or the more problematic elements of technology.

Glazer kicked off the evening by joking that the “All Good” theme was selected because an alternative like “‘The Broligarchy’s Speeding of the Onslaught of Facism in the Face of the Climate Catastrophe at the Point of No Return’ would have bummed everybody out.”

As she continued her monologue, Glazer spoke about the continued uncertainty around the fate of TikTok and joked that Signal is the app that should truly be banned.

“TikTok and the Trump administration were the Ross and Rachel of social media — a real will they, won’t they,” Glazer joked. “They banned it and then they quickly brought it back. Now they’re talking about banning it again.
