John Waters’s Cry-Baby is the ideal companion piece to the filmmaker’s 1988 hit Hairspray. That film takes place in the early ’60s, against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, and deals in a lighthearted fashion with thorny issues of racial segregation, while Cry-Baby uses its mid-’50s setting to poke fun at class conflict in staid Eisenhower-era Baltimore. And both films are perfectly realized period pieces awash with the music of their respective eras: Hairspray focusing on soul and R&b, Cry-Baby packed with catchy rockabilly and doowop numbers.
Cry-Baby focuses on Wade Walker (Johnny Depp), the leader of a redoubtable gang of “drapes,” a Baltimorean spin on the greasers of the time. Events begin to echo Romeo and Juliet once Cry-Baby, who’s known for driving girls crazy for the way he’s able to shed a single tear, makes a play for Allison (Amy Locane), the...

There aren’t many movies like Cry Baby, just like there aren’t many directors and writers like John Waters. Both are unique and unlike anything that has come before or since.
Cry Baby hit screens at the beginning of a new decade, 1990, and celebrated a time many decades prior. It was skewering of teenage delinquent movies of the 50s with a healthy dose of weird, transgressive and musical theater. The overly dramatic time of a teenager and how rebel films of the 50s took that angst and upped to off the charts.
John Waters grew up with those films, and Cry Baby was his unique and amazing spin on that genre. Cry Baby tells the story of Wade “Cry Baby” Walker and his bizarre family and gang of Drapes. These are the weirdos and outcasts of Baltimore, the ones Waters himself would identify more with than the Squares of the story.

Lauren Gussis is developing a new Melrose Place reboot with three original stars returning. The cast is set to include Heather Locklear as Amanda Woodward, Laura Leighton as Sydney Andrews, and Daphne Zuniga as Jo Reynolds. The reboot will rekindle old traumas, romances, resentments, and secrets among the original Melrose Place residents.
A reboot of Melrose Place is in development. The original primetime soap, which itself was a spinoff of the hit teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210, ran on Fox for seven seasons between 1992 and 1999. The ensemble show followed the interpersonal drama of a group of twenty- and thirtysomethings living in a Los Angeles apartment complex. The show eventually ran for more than 200 episodes, spawning the short-lived spinoff Models Inc. in 1994 and a previous 18-episode CW reboot in 2009.

Apparently TV can’t get enough “Melrose Place.” The campy sudser from the 1990s, which was already rebooted once in the 2010s, is looking to make another comeback — and this time with three of the Og stars. Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton and Daphne Zuniga are all back to reprise their roles in the latest reboot, this time from writer Lauren Gussis.
Gussis will also exec produce with Leighton, Zuniga, Tiffany Grant and Jason Weinberg. Here’s the logline: “When one of their dearest friends dies suddenly, the Og residents of Melrose Place gather to honor the deceased. But the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”
CBS Studios is behind the reboot, based on the series created by Darren Star.

90 Day Fiancé star Angela Deem has made fans cringe and given them secondhand embarrassment one too many times by seductively dancing on Instagram. The 56-year-old mother of two and grandmother of six found love thousands of miles away in Nigeria when 34-year-old Michael sent her a Facebook Dm. Angela, now a reality TV personality and influencer for a living, entertains her followers by showing off her moves on social media, while she remains married to Michael who’s still not in the U.S.
90 Day Fiancé's Angela and Michael are known for having a toxic relationship in which she’s seen being abusive towards him. "He never even had a beard ’till he got mixed up with your son." Oscilloscope Labs has revealed the new trailer for a re-release of the 1997 indie coming-of-age film Going All The Way. It first premiered at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival years ago. Mark Pelllngton’s adaptation of Dan Wakefield's novel about young men coming of age in the 1950s is a timeless story of freedom and repression, friendship and family, sex and love, and the psychological & spiritual struggle to be true to one’s self. Pellington constructs an elegant and morally complex tale about two young Korean war veterans returning to their sheltered Indianapolis lives, only to find they no longer fit in. Starring a young Ben Affleck and Jeremy Davies, plus Jill Clayburgh, Lesley Ann Warren, Amy Locane, Nick Offerman, Rachel Weisz, and Rose McGowan. The newly re-edited & restored version of the film, dubbed "The Director's Edit", completely "upends the original cut,...

One of the major rediscoveries of the year is a never-before-seen 4K re-edit of Mark Pellington’s Going All the Way, his directorial debut which premiered back at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. An adaptation of Dan Wakefield’s seminal novel about a young man coming of age in the 1950s, we follow two young high school alumni and Korean war veterans returning to their sheltered Indianapolis community, only to find they no longer fit in. When I heard that Adam Horovitz (aka Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys) was going to be starring in a movie, even though I wasn't the biggest Beasties fan, this was a film I had to see. So my brother and I went to the one movie theater in Orange County, Ca where Lost Angels was playing. The theater was filled with seats (only three of them had humans in them) and the movie proceeded to play on the screen.. To be honest, aside from Horovitz channeling an even more aloof James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, Lost Angels wasn't some monumental viewing experience for me. However, it's themes of alienated youth, cultural appropriation, and the lengths a young person would go just to belong were poignant, hard hitting and, frankly, unforgettable.
Lost Angels was a low budget endeavor even by 1988 standards. Made for a pittance ($1.2 million dollars) it is...

Melrose Place alum Amy Locane-Bovenizer may be headed back to prison after serving two-and-a-half years of a three-year sentence for her involvement in a 2010 drunk driving car crash which killed a 60-year-old New Jersey woman.
The 44-year-old actress was released on parole in June 2015. But on Friday, a judge ruled that the leniency granted in the original prison term lacked sufficient explanation and that Locane-Bovenizer's trial judge must offer a more detailed justification of her downgraded sentence, according to court documents.
In November 2012, Locane-Bovenizer was acquitted of a more serious charge of aggravated manslaughter and convicted of the lesser-degree offense of second-degree vehicular homicide.

The 1994 film Blue Sky is something of an anomaly from the mid-90s. Filmed in 1991, it would be the last film feature of British auteur Tony Richardson’s career, who had been working in television for several years prior, ever since his coolly received 1984 adaptation of John Irvine’s The Hotel New Hampshire. Then, due to the bankruptcy of Orion Pictures, the film’s distributor, the final product was shelved for three years, at long last released in the autumn of 1994, going on to snag actress Jessica Lange her second Academy Award. Now, twenty years later, it’s a prestige that would seem near impossible to attain for a feature treated to the same fate in today’s market. This distinction potentially sets the film up for failure, which perhaps explains the lack of continued enthusiasm surrounding it.

Amy Locane-Bovenizer's three-year prison sentence just isn't enough for some. The Melrose Place star's punishment, handed down last week following her conviction for vehicular manslaughter and assault, was appealed today by the Office of the Somerset County Prosecutor in New Jersey. "Our office is extremely disappointed with the judge's decision to drop down the sentence and on top of that, to impose the very bottom end of the third-degree sentencing range," prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said in a statement, per the New Jersey Star-Ledger. With the judge determining that Locane-Bovenizer's disabled young child shouldn't be made to suffer more than he had to for his mother's...

Somerville, N.J. -- A state prosecutor on Tuesday appealed the three-year prison sentence given to a former "Melrose Place" actress for a drunken driving death, saying the judge improperly focused on the personal circumstances of the defendant, who has a sick and disabled child.

Somerville, N.J. — A former "Melrose Place" actress who was driving drunk when her SUV plowed into another car, killing a woman, was convicted Tuesday of vehicular homicide and jailed after her bail was revoked. She was acquitted of a more serious charge of aggravated manslaughter.
Amy Locane-Bovenizer, 40, had sought to shift blame for the fatal accident to a third motorist whose car she had rear-ended and who had been pursuing the actress, and also to the husband of the car accident victim for making what witnesses said was a slow turn in front of her SUV.
But the conviction on a charge of death by auto, also known as vehicular homicide, was as a matter of law a "rejection of that defense," Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Murphy said following the verdict.

Melrose Place actress Amy Locane has been formally indicted on charges of vehicular assault and aggravated manslaughter after a DUI incident back in June resulted in a death.
Locane, who admitted to police that she had been drinking before she decided to go for a drive, was first involved in a minor hit-and-run accident on the day in question, and then a few minutes later crashed into the side of another car, killing the woman who was sitting in the car. Locane faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the manslaughter charge, which her lawyer says was a surprise. No doubt they’ll be looking for a plea deal.
