Image
Get ready to test your might. With Mortal Kombat II making its way to theaters this fall, one streamer is about to offer the entire franchise on one convenient streaming platform. HBO Max will offer all three previous Mortal Kombat movies, plus the Mortal Kombat Legends series of animated films, starting on July 1. Russell Crowe joins Highlander reboot as Henry Cavill's immortal mentor
Image
The long-awaited Highlander reboot from John Wick director Chad Stahelski has added another immortal to its ranks. Variety reports that Russell Crowe has signed on to the movie; he'll be playing a seasoned immortal warrior who serves as the mentor to the lead character played by Henry Cavill. If you're keeping track, that means Crowe will be assuming a new version of the mentor character played by Sean Connery in the 1986 film.

The original Highlander movie starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal swordsman hailing from the 16th century Scottish highlands. Through flashbacks, the viewer sees how MacLeod discovered he was an immortal and was subsequently taught by a Spanish swordsman named Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez (Connery). These immortal warriors can only be killed by being decapitated; if another immortal is the one who does the deed, they gain the power of their fallen foe through a transfer of power known as the Quickening.

It's A Man Of Steel Reunion As Russell Crowe Joins Henry Cavill In Amazon MGM's Highlander Remake
Image
The upcoming Highlander reboot appears to be embracing the franchise’s quirky casting legacy, especially when it comes to the role of Ramirez, the iconic Spanish immortal.

In the original 1986 film, the part was famously played by Scottish actor Sean Connery, a choice that became both beloved and bemusing among fans.

Now, in a similarly unexpected move, New Zealand-born, Australian Oscar-winner Russell Crowe has been tapped to portray Ramirez in the new reboot [per Deadline], which stars Henry Cavill and is directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick).

Ramirez was later retconned to be Egyptian rather than Spanish, so it will be interesting to see what approach the remake takes.

Production is set to begin in September, and with Crowe now officially on board, additional casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks as momentum builds around this long-anticipated revival of the fantasy action franchise.

Plot details for the remake have been kept under wraps,...

Russell Crowe to star opposite Henry Cavill in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot
Christopher Lambert in Highlander (1986)
In Highlander, there can only be one. Still, adding actors to the cast of Henry Cavill’s upcoming reboot sounds like a good idea. According to Collider, Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is officially joining the cast. The forthcoming reboot of Highlander features Cavill in the lead role, with John Wick mastermind Chad Stahelski directing, and cameras beginning to roll this Autumn.

Previously, Stahelski told Collider that his Highlander project is more than a reboot. It’s a chapter in the franchise meant to broaden the saga to untapped and unknown parts.

Stahelski has also teased the timeline for the movie. “We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes,” he said. “There’s big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play.

Henry Cavill Debuts a New Hairstyle Right in Time for the 'Highlander' Reboot's Filming Start

Henry Cavilljust gave fans a very different kind of transformation — and no, it doesn’t involve a cape or Krypton, or changing in a telephone box. In a surprise appearance at the Taormina Film Festival on Wednesday, as reported by InStyle, the actor debuted chin-length curls on the red carpet, marking a major shift from the clean-cut style most audiences associate with his roles in Man of Steel. Cavill, looking sharp in a double-breasted tux, walked the carpet alongside girlfriend Natalie Viscuso.

While some fans might be shocked by the new look, longtime Cavill watchers will recognize this isn’t the first time he’s embraced long hair — the last time he sported a similar length was all the way back in 2009 (bar the glorious white wig that he wore in The Witcher). But the timing here is no coincidence. With cameras finally set to...

The Fifth Element’s Opera Scene: Luc Besson’s finest hour?
Luc Besson
While Luc Besson has had a long career as a director and producer, going all the way back to 1985’s Subway (starring a young Christopher Lambert), for many of us, his crowning achievement remains The Fifth Element. A respectable hit when it was released in the spring of 1997, its reputation has grown considerably in the years since its release, with it widely regarded as a classic. In it, Bruce Willis plays Korben Dallas, a futurist NYC cabbie, who crosses paths with Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo, the titular Fifth Element, and becomes embroiled in a quest to save the galaxy, with him opposed by Gary Oldman’s Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg.

While packed with show-stopping sequences, the movie is most famous for the extended opera house sequence. In it, Dallas, undercover for the government, attends an opera performance by Diva Plavalaguna, who performs the now iconic “Diva Dance”, with music by Eric Serra.

Directors, stars, and screenwriters have come and gone for well over a decade, all in the hope of obtaining the prize that is reigniting the spark of the original film. Released in 1986 and starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and perhaps one of the best movie soundtracks to ever blast through a cinema screen, "Highlander" follows a titular Scotsman who discovers that he belongs to a small group of immortals who are drawn to combat one another in sword fights to the death. The only way to defeat his opponents is by lopping off their heads, which proves to be difficult when one long time adversary known as The Kurgan (Clancy Brown) is dedicated to taking his.

The Highlander Reboot Reportedly Moved To Amazon MGM Because Lionsgate Didn't Believe In Henry Cavill
Image
The Wrap recently published a revealing deep dive into the behind-the-scenes maneuvering surrounding Highlander, the long-gestating reboot starring Henry Cavill. The film’s surprising jump from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM appears to have come down to creative vision—clashing with cold, hard numbers.

At the heart of the dispute was director Chad Stahelski, who reportedly requested a $180 million budget to fully realize his vision for the reboot. Lionsgate, however, was unwilling to budge beyond $165 million, setting the stage for a studio switch.

On the surface, that price tag raised eyebrows. Aside from some potentially heavy VFX work—particularly for the franchise’s signature "Quickening" sequences—Highlander is largely a grounded action film with sword fights and martial arts. Stahelski, after all, made the first three John Wick films on considerably more modest budgets of $30 million, $40 million, and $75 million, respectively.

Adding to Lionsgate’s hesitation was growing skepticism over Cavill’s recent box office appeal.

As previously reported, the long-awaited Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill as a MacLeod (presumably either Connor or Duncan), has found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, shifting gears from its previous development at Lionsgate.

Fans eager for a resurgence of the sword-slashing fantasy series can now look towards a potential production start as early as September, with a projected release window in 2027 or 2028.

Director Chad Stahelski (John Wick franchise), who has been attached to the project since its initial announcement in October 2023, recently provided an update to Collider, stating that the Highlander reboot is his immediate priority.

"If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we'll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander," Stahelski revealed. The script for the reboot is penned by Mike Finch.

In a prior interview, Stahelski shared his compelling pitch to Cavill, emphasizing the depth of the character: "My selling point was,...

Henry Cavill has starred in the adaptations of multiple fan-favorite franchises so far. He became Superman in Zack Snyder's Dceu, played the leading character, Geralt of Rivia, in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, and even had a role in Mission: Impossible.

The actor, who is also a major gamer and fan of more popular franchises, hasn't fulfilled all his dream roles, and he's set to check off another with the upcoming Highlander reboot. The upcoming movie recently received a new update that the film's rights were almost secured by Amazon MGM Studios' United Artists and Scott Stuber. In a new conversation with Collider, John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski teased that the Highlander movie could premiere sometime in 2027 or 2028.

He’s bringing his action-packed style to the Highlander universe, promising a mix of intense fight scenes and a deep, emotional story. Explosions, Aliens and Dyer’s Fists Lead Legend’s May Madness
Image
Legend has unveiled its packed May 2025 premiere schedule, delivering an ambitious run of science fiction, fantasy, and action classics that stretch across time, space, and genres.

At the top of the pile is James Cameron’s rarely broadcast deep-sea thriller The Abyss, which makes a rare UK television appearance on Sunday 25 May at 9pm. This underwater epic about alien intelligence, nuclear paranoia, and human resilience remains one of Cameron’s most visually arresting and emotionally charged films.

But for those who prefer their sci-fi terrain a little more subterranean than subaquatic, Legend has curated a trio of matinee premieres that mine classic adventure with gusto. Kicking off with Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) on 5 May, followed by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) and disaster milestone The Poseidon Adventure (1972), the channel dives deep into cult cinematic archaeology.

The month also marks the arrival of Highlander III: The Sorcerer,...

Luc Besson Talks Risk Averse Studios & Joy Of Making L.A. & Smartphone-Shot Romance ‘June & John’: “It Was Just Two Actors & A Director”
Image
Four decades have passed since Luc Besson found fame as an emerging 26-year-old director with thriller Subway starring Isabelle Adjani and Christopher Lambert.

His feature credits since range from early stylized breakouts The Big Blue and Nikita; to sci-fi hits The Fifth Element and Lucy, and historic dramas The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and The Lady, at the same time as building film company EuropaCorp and producing blockbuster franchises Taxi and Taken.

As the 40th anniversary of his big screen breakthrough approaches this fall, Besson is rolling out ultra-low budget romance June & John. Shot entirely with smartphones in L.A. during the Covid 19 pandemic with a 12-person crew, the guerilla-style production took Besson back to his early filmmaking years.

“It was very joyous. It was really two actors and a director because of the lockdown. From the time they were first in costume to the time we...

Henry Cavill's Highlander movie gets a surprising update
Image
The anticipated reboot of Highlander starring Henry Cavill as a sword-wielding immortal warrior has gotten an interesting update. John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been cooking this Highlander movie for nearly a decade, and when Cavill's attachment was announced in 2021 it felt like a match made in heaven. And it still is...whenever we get to see it.

We previously reported that Highlander's 2025 filming start date was delayed. Pre-production on the movie is still underway, but according to Witcher scoop site Redanian Intelligence, cameras are now slated to start rolling later in May 2025. The delays are reportedly because Stahelski was needed for reshoots on the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, while Cavill is filming his live-action Voltron movie. Highlander is slated to be the next project the pair tackle after that. John Wick 4 writer Michael Finch will pen the screenplay.

Now, we've gotten word of another shake-up: Highlander may be changing studios.

There Can Only Be .. One Studio! Henry Cavill's Highlander Reboot Jumps to Amazon MGM
Image
"There can only be one!" – and when it comes to the Highlander reboot starring the ever-brooding Henry Cavill and helmed by John Wick maestro Chad Stahelski, that one is now Amazon MGM Studios!

Just a year after Lionsgate touted the return of the beloved '80s action franchise with a splashy CinemaCon presentation, the project has officially switched sword hands, finding a new production haven at Amazon MGM. Sources indicate the move comes as Amazon MGM's vision aligns more closely with Stahelski's take on the immortal saga.

It seems Cavill is becoming quite the fixture at Amazon MGM as the studio/streamer appears poised to setup Cavill as its action franchise king. Not only will he be wielding a head-slicing blade in Highlander, but he's also set to spearhead their ambitious Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe and pilot the live-action Voltron movie.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Cavill's name continues...

Christopher Lambert in Highlander (1986)
Highlander | Long-mooted remake going from Lionsgate to Amazon
Christopher Lambert in Highlander (1986)
Lionsgate looks like it’s backing away from the Highlander reboot, and Amazon MGM Studios is set to pick it up. More here.

Here’s an odd story regarding the status of Chad Stahelski’s planned remake of Highlander, the 1986 adventure film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.

The film is set to star Henry Cavill and in one version or another, has been in development for well over a decade. Finally, with Stahelski – the filmmaker behind the success of Lionsgate’s John Wick films – at the helm, everything looked in place to finally move ahead, not least because the casting of Henry Cavill seemed like a smart move too.

The studio at one point was reportedly planning to build an entire universe around the movie, with Chad Stahelski in place to oversee things, much as he does with the Wick franchise, Although John Wick: Chapter 5 has been officially announced,...

Henry Cavill’s Highlander Moves from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios
Image
Henry Cavill’s long-awaited Highlander movie is still happening—but now it’s changing studios. The film, which has been in development for years, is moving from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists. The companies are in final talks, and the movie will still be released in theaters.

Director Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick movies, is staying on as director. He has been working on the Highlander project for nearly 10 years. Cavill, who joined the movie in 2021, is still set to star.

At one point, Lionsgate wanted to create a full Highlander universe, with Stahelski leading the way. But now, United Artists will have full rights to the franchise.

Henry Cavill’s Highlander Will Copy 1 Move From Duncan Macleod’s Franchise at Its New Home Amazon MGM
Image
From playing the fan-favorite Witcher to appearing in the Highlander reboot, Henry Cavill seems to be sharpening his sword (and cheekbones), now that the project is slicing its way to a new home at Amazon MGM Studios. Yes, originally set to be developed under Lionsgate’s banner, the reboot has found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios.

But here’s the kicker—Amazon seems to be pulling a classic Duncan MacLeod move and going into double trouble: a movie and a TV show. With the John Wick director Chad Stahelski behind the camera and Henry Cavill possibly playing Connor MacLeod, this reboot seems to be planning on raising the dead (or at least the fanbase).

According to new reports from Deadline, it looks like the immortals have packed their bags and moved to streaming neighborhoods.

‘Highlander’ Reboot with Henry Cavill Moves from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM and United Artists
Image
The Highlander cannot die! After originally being set up at Lionsgate as a potential new universe of movies from the director of the “John Wick” series, director Chad Stahelski’s remake of the 1980s cult film “Highlander” is changing sides.

Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, as led by former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber, are in final negotiations to secure the rights to remake a new version of “Highlander,” again with the aim to release the film in theaters.

Instead of yet another new take on it, Stahelski is still attached to direct, and “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill is still attached to star (looks like all of that sword training he told CinemaCon crowds he was doing won’t go to waste). Michael Finch (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) is writing the screenplay. United Artists too still has hopes that the film could be developed into a larger new series.

Henry Cavill’s ‘Highlander’ Departing Lionsgate for Amazon MGM Studios, United Artists
Henry Cavill at an event for Le Ministère de la Sale Guerre (2024)
A year ago, Lionsgate flew Henry Cavill to Las Vegas, where he charmed audiences at CinemaCon with tales of the extensive sword training he was undergoing to star in Highlander for the studio. The project had been in development for almost a decade with filmmaker Chad Stahelski, but finally seemed to be moving forward.

Now, that project is indeed still moving forward, but it will be headed to Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists, which is in final negotiations to acquire the package from Lionsgate. The film is intended as a theatrical play.

At one time, Lionsgate was plotting an entire universe for Highlander, with Stahelski to oversee it all. But the new deal will give UA full rights to the franchise, which dates back to the 1986 feature about immortal warriors starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. As the tagline “there can only be one,” suggests, these warriors are pitted in battle agaisnt one another.
