The Conjuring: Last Rites: Which Ed & Lorraine Case Is the Final Film Based On?
Image
The Conjuring: Last Rites, the final chapter in the franchise, will center around the notorious case of the alleged Smurl haunting case from Pennsylvania in the ’80s. Notable for being one of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s most prominent cases, Patrick Wilson told EW that the story has been on their radar since the franchise’s inception.

We’ve known about this one for a long time. Then writers are playing around with how it affects the family and what’s going on in the family’s life. That’s where we can really theatricalize it. We’re not making a documentary.

The real-life follows the family of Jack and Janet Smurl,...

James Wan reveals why it's the right time to end the Warrens story in The Conjuring: Last Rites
The Conjuring creator James Wan says Last Rites was chosen as the final film in the series because he wanted to go out "with a big bang whilst everyone’s still loving the movies".Wan created The Conjuring Universe back in 2013 with the original movie which introduced real life paranormal investigators Ed Warren and his wife Lorraine Warren - played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga - to horror fans around the world. The Conjuring: Last Rites will see Patrick and Vera as Ed and Lorraine for the final time, whilst their grown-up daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) will also be part of the case, which is based on one of...

James Wan Confirms Fate of 'The Conjuring Universe' Following 'Last Rites'
Image
The Conjuring Universe is coming to an end as we know it, and for creator and director James Wan, he's looking forward to putting to rest the popular horror franchise that's been running for more than 10 years. Wan helped conceive the story for the final film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is directed by Michael Chaves and slated to open this September to bring to a close what some have called Phase 1. As for the possibility of a Phase 2? He says that’s still up in the air for now.

Speaking with Bloody Disgusting ahead of The Conjuring: Last Rites, Wan confirmed that it is, indeed, the end of an era,...

James Wan on the ‘Conjuring’ Universe’s Future and Why ‘Last Rites’ Had to Be the Smurl Case
Image
Upcoming sequel The Conjuring: Last Rites is said to be the final installment in the mainline franchise, yet that doesn’t mean the end of the extended Conjuring Universe.

But what exactly does that mean?

New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener indicated earlier this year that Last Rites is considered the conclusion of “phase one” of the extended franchise that includes The Nun, The Nun 2, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Home.

The final mainline entry also serves as the final bow for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s characters, Ed and Lorraine Warren, a culmination of their epic romance/horror saga over four films as well as appearances in multiple spinoffs.

‘The Haunted’: The Childhood Terror That Adapted the Smurl Haunting 34 Years Before ‘The Conjuring’
Image
When I was nine years old, I saw a movie on television that would have a lasting effect on my life. That film was The Haunted – a made for TV movie about a family who suffered the effects of a demonic infestation in their house. I had a friend over and we were eating pizza when we saw a commercial for the movie, which announced that it would be starting in just a few minutes. We decided to ditch our plans of watching Tgif reruns and watch this instead. Our parents were out and we had been left to our own devices, so what better way to spend a Friday night than by watching a movie that most certainly would have been off limits if the parents had known anything about it?

The 1991 made-for-tv horror movie tells the purportedly true story of Jack and Janet Smurl and their family. In the late 1970s,...

The Conjuring 4's 'True' Ghost Story Was Already Made As '90s TV Movie
Image
As far as true stories go, the "Conjuring" franchise has always played rather fast and loose with history. Ed and Lorraine Warren, the married demonologist couple played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, are based on actual people who really embarked on paranormal exorcisms -- though the actions of the real Warrens, both of whom have since passed away, were perhaps a bit more controversial than the movies would have you think. Most (if not all) of the cases at the center of each "Conjuring" movie and spinoff are similarly taken from true accountings ... though, obviously, franchise architect James Wan and the filmmakers that have followed in his footsteps always spice things up for a worthy big screen experience. The horror property is now set to come to a close with the fourth mainline film, this year's "The Conjuring: Last Rites," but the plot of the upcoming sequel might be the most true-to-life one yet.

Oliver Stone's 'JFK' Gleefully Rewrote History
Image
Quick LinksThe Cruel Truth Behind Oliver Stone's 'JFK''jfk' Is History for Entertainment Purposes OnlyWhy Did Oliver Stone Mythologize an Absurd Footnote in Legal History?

Recently, President Donald Trump authorized the remaining files pertaining to the John F. Kennedy assassination to be declassified. For many people, their knowledge of the assassination comes from Oliver Stone’s 1991 courtroom thriller, JFK. However, it must be said that Stone's movie is largely fabricated and hasn't aged well, Stone whitewashing his "hero," New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, played by Kevin Costner. The real trial was an unmitigated trainwreck.

As for those secret papers, don’t get your hopes up. Hyped at the end of the film, the sealed findings of the 1976-79 United States House Select Committee on Assassinations are bound to disappoint, at least for those who took the movie JFK to heart. The movie might be a filmmaking tour de force,...

Jennifer Tilly loves “fanatical” Chucky fans, knows she’ll forever be Tiffany to many
Image
The Chucky TV series may have gotten the ax, but we all know that the base will never let the franchise die. It’s just so embedded in the horror spirit that we’ll always come back to it and the fan favorite characters. And for Jennifer Tilly, that means forever being linked to Tiffany, something she might literally take to her grave.

Sitting down with Interview, Jennifer Tilly acknowledged that Tiffany is without a doubt her signature character and the role she’ll best be remembered for, despite an Oscar nomination for Bullets Over Broadway. And for that, she has the hardcore fans to thank. “I’ve come to terms with the fact that when I pass away, people are going to leave Chucky dolls on my grave, and I’m fine with that. When the internet happened, because when I started out there was no internet, I realized...

Friends of Sally Kirkland Start GoFundMe for Veteran Actor Facing Health Crisis While Fighting Life-Threatening Illnesses
Image
Friends of Sally Kirkland organized a GoFundMe in the name of the actress, hoping to raise $65,000 to help pay for her latest medical needs. The Academy Award-nominated performer dealt with four fractures to her neck, wrist, and hip in the past year, according to the GoFundMe page. While she was recovering from these injuries, she developed two “life-threatening infections,” which she is currently attempting to find the right treatment for.

Kirkland starred in the 1988 movie “Anna,” for which she was nominated for the best actress Oscar and won the Best Actress Golden Globe Award. With a career starting in the 1960s, she participated in more than 300 projects.

The GoFundMe explains that Kirkland lost the money she generated from “Anna” and her established investments due to the 2007-2008 financial crisis.

Veteran Actress Sally Kirkland in ‘Urgent Need’ of Medical Care as Friends Launch GoFundMe
Image
Sally Kirkland, who has graced the big and small screen for decades with more than 250 acting credits, including an Oscar nomination for 1987’s Anna, is in “urgent need” of medical care, say friends, after multiple recent health scares. These include two “life-threatening infections” and neck, wrist, and hip bone fractures. On Monday, November 18, the 83-year-old’s close friends helped her launch a GoFundMe page to assist with medical bills, as she faces issues that are more expensive than she can afford. The fundraiser got into the details of Kirkland’s current condition, claiming she’s in peril and can’t get proper care because of changes made to SAG-AFTRA’s senior guild insurance plan. They also shared she lost most of her net worth in the 2007 stock market crash. The GoFundMe is titled “Support Sally Kirkland’s Urgent Medical Care.” Its goal is $65,000, and as of November 19, around $9,000 had been raised.

Veteran Actress Sally Kirkland Facing Health Crisis After Life-Threatening Illnesses, Bone Fractures
Image
Friends of Sally Kirkland are rallying around the actress as she faces an “urgent need” of assistance following a series of health scares including two “life-threatening infections” and fractures in her neck, wrist and hip. Kirkland now requires a level of medical care beyond what she can afford, and those friends have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the 83-year-old with expenses.

The fundraiser, which went live on Monday, details Kirkland’s health crisis and claims that her situation has been exacerbated by controversial changes made to SAG-AFTRA’s health plan for senior guild members and the 2007 market crash that claimed the “bulk of her investments” and the money she earned during the peak years of her career.

“This past year Sally fractured her four bones in her neck, right wrist and her left hip. While recovering she developed two separate life-threatening infections,” states the GoFundMe, which has a goal...

Was the Controversy Over Oliver Stone's 1991 Political Thriller Overblown?
Image
When it comes to historical biopics, theres arguably none more controversial than Oliver Stones 1991 smash hit, JFK. While it remains Stones highest-grossing film (with over $200 million worldwide on a budget of only $40 million) and earned rave critical reviews and several Oscar nominations (two of which it won), almost no one will call it historically accurate. Even calling it a biopic at all is a stretch, as Stone takes numerous creative liberties in order to argue the shocking assassination of John F. Kennedy was actually a conspiracy.

Fans of the film argue that Oliver Stone had no intentions of being historically accurate and that he was more concerned with capturing the feelings of distrust and paranoia that many felt after the assassination. Just as many people argue that the historical inaccuracies are too glaring to ignore and worse, that the movies promotion of conspiracy theories feels particularly uncomfortable in the 21st century.

The 10 Best Movies Like The Truman Show
Image
Despite how singular the film seems, there are a surprising number of movies like The Truman Show that explore the differences between reality and fantasy, whether that's on television, in dreams, or something even more fantastical. One of the best movies in Jim Carrey's eclectic filmography, The Truman Show follows the titular every-man. He's so every-man, in fact, that people around the world tune in to watch every moment of his ordinary life to relate, snoop, and empathize. The catch is that Truman has no idea any of this is going on.

The term "Truman Show" has even become something of a shorthand, to describe situations where people's lives are being filmed or watched. It can be with the subjects knowing, like in Nathan Fielder's brand of off-beat comedy shows, or it can be without anyone aware of their involvement in a production, like in Amazon's bizarre and hit Jury Duty.

Oscars flashback: 5 reasons why Tommy Lee Jones (‘The Fugitive’) ran off with the Best Supporting Actor prize
Image
Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.

He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.

But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.

I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

Stars: Terrence Howard, Valery M. Ortiz, Appy Pratt, Cuba Gooding Jr., Reno Reyes, Sally Kirkland, Udo Kier, Louis Mandylor | Written by Joshua A. Cohen, Terrence Howard | Directed by Asif Akbar

Skeletons in the Closet is the latest film from director Asif Akbar. After sitting through several abysmal films he’s directed, most recently Clown Motel as well as an even larger pile of duds he was a producer on, I knew enough not to have high expectations. Even that wasn’t enough preparation for what I was about to endure.

Mark and Valentina are dealing with financial problems. Those problems are about to get a lot worse, as instead of the raise he was expecting, Mark gets a pink slip. As if that wasn’t enough bad news, their daughter Jenny’s has brain cancer and the doctors are willing to let her die unless Mark and Valentina can come...

The latest work from Hungarian directors Gergö Elekes and József Gallai, a voiceover opens Aftermath to establish this world where humanity is on the verge of an important change. A subsequent interview may reveal that more tests are needed, yet it remains clear that humanity is close to a vital medical discovery.

Upon receiving a call from her irate boss, her frustrations are shared through expository dialogue regarding how she is the only employee who has consistently worked on a major project. ‘Fatal Games’ Blu-ray Review – Spearhead Your Night With This Unearthed 1980s Slasher
Image
Just when you think you’ve seen every 1980s slasher flick, Vinegar Syndrome humbles you by unearthing yet another low-budget horror film lost in time and space, this time with 1984’s Fatal Games (originally titled The Killing Touch).

Fatal Games is the story of Olympic-hopeful medalists being systematically picked off one-by-one at the Falcon Academy, the main setting for the film’s events. Each time one of the characters has been nixed, the killer scratches out their likeness from a group photo containing the academy’s pool of victims.

If you think this sounds similar to 1981’s Graduation Day, you would be on the right track. Director Michael Elliot, who also stars in his film as Dr. Jordine, builds onto the foundation of Graduation Day to create his own ’80s horror film. In between the killings, we are treated to some detailed character development storylines including the trials and tribulations of being a young athlete,...

10 Best Martial Arts Tournament Movies
Image
Martial arts movies are often enhanced by the inclusion of a tournament, raising the stakes and adding to the viewing experience. The quality of martial arts movies can vary greatly, but many of the better ones benefit from the tournament factor. The inclusion of a tournament in martial arts movies is a frequent and popular trope that continues to captivate audiences.

One thing that makes nearly any martial arts movie better is the inclusion of a tournament. With competitive achievement on the line, the stakes are raised, and the hope that a protagonist can emerge victorious further contributes to the viewing experience. That idea applies whether it's karate, kickboxing, Thai boxing, mixed martial arts, or an event that allows any style.

Martial arts movies can also vary wildly in terms of quality. They can range from cheesy train wrecks with lousy acting and little or no plot to inspiring, atmospheric masterpieces with excellent performances.

It also, in the style of classic exploitation films, promises that it contains “some of the most bizarre, disgusting and disturbing images ever put on screen.”

That footage begins with video of Garrett Gaspar who briefly attempts a bizarre French accent before a ghostly something or other attacks him. Cut to video from Jonah whose name is misspelled Johna in the channel’s name, and Jocelyn two aspiring influencers.

Beyond The Conjuring: Horror Movies That Don't (But Could) Exist Within The Warren Universe
Image
It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

Before the era of televised paranormal investigators like Zak Bagans of "Ghost Adventures" or "Kindred Spirits" stars Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, there were Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ed was a professed demonologist, while...

We Kill for Love Review | A Flaccid Ode to Softcore Thrillers
Image
Many an American teen growing up in the 1980s, 90s and even 2000s experienced a sexual awaking whilst watching a direct-to-video erotic thriller. These movies, which populated video shelves and late night cable in lieu of hardcore adult films, featured ridiculous storylines as a pretext to getting their casts naked at every opportunity. Plenty of simulated sex would follow to keep viewers transfixed. Nobody ever watched for innovative filmmaking or great acting.

We’d wager good money that director Anthony Penta also experienced erotic thrillers as a rite of passage. His debut feature, We Kill for Love, wants to chronicle the rise and fall of low rent softcore. Despite incredible access to veterans of the genre, Penta produces the most shambolic and overlong documentary in recent memory.

Dirty Deeds

Beginning in the 1980s, audiences had a growing thirst for erotic thrillers. The sexual revolution had made casual sex mainstream, though...

Image
"They're not driving me out of my own mine!" Film Hub has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Haunting of Hell Hole Mine, arriving to watch later in May. This one is being released direct-to-vod for anyone interested. It's one of the final roles from actor Tom Sizemore, who passed away earlier this year. To rescue his niece from insanity, Luke must confront the dark spirit trapped in their ancestral gold mine. The late Tom Sizemore and Tom Lister Jr. star alongside the Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland in the highly anticipated release of this thrilling supernatural western. Rudy Youngblood, May Myot Noe, and David Fennoy also co-star in this unique genre mash-up in the tradition of Cabin in the Woods and Get Out. This looks absolutely awful, but hey maybe some folks will have fun with it. Not much else worth watching here. // Continue Reading...

The unexpected wins from dark horses are always so much more thrilling than predictable outcomes.

It's not that the winners were undeserving -- it's often that their wins seemed to come out of nowhere.

With prognosticators having Oscar predictions down to a science, anything remotely surprising is a rare treat.

Here are some of the most shocking wins that left us with our jaws on the floor!

Adrien Brody (Best Actor In A Leading Role) in The Pianist

Brody was the only Oscar-less member of his cohort when he won for his role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.

Paltrow called the film a “masterpiece” and said she was “stunned” by Riseborough, whom she said deserves “to win every award there is and all the ones that haven’t been invented yet.” While onstage accepting her Critics...

Nearly 100 SAG-AFTRA Members Protest Vaccination Mandate As Industry’s Covid Protocols Are About To Expire
Image
Nearly 100 SAG-AFTRA members rallied peacefully but boisterously Thursday outside the union’s Los Angeles headquarters to protest the industry’s Covid-19 vaccination mandate.

Chanting “Stop the shot” and “This is insanity,” they carried signs that read “My body, my choice,” “End the mandates now” and “The only shot I’m taking is Jack Daniel’s.” A guy with a bullhorn shouted, “Coercion is not consent,” and that accepting the mandate “is the beginning of socialism.”

Cha Cha Sandoval-McMahon, a stuntwoman and actress who organized the protest, called it “a pretty good turnout” for only two days of networking.

The film and TV industry’s Covid-19 safety protocols, which include a narrowly defined “Mandatory Vaccination” provision, are set to expire Saturday but could be extended, as they have been several times since the protocols were first issued in September 2020. The move enabled jobs and productions to rebound during the during the darkest days of the pandemic.

The comedic play-within-a-play-within-a-movie, which per Bressack contemplates “the complexities of language, art, theater, film and more” is also especially personal for him. James Cullen Bressack (“Fortress”) is adapting the play “Murder, Anyone?” into a feature film, Variety can exclusively reveal.

“Muder, Anyone?” was originally written by Bressack’s father, Emmy Award-winning “Pinky and the Brain” writer Gordon Bressack. The play first premiered at the White Fire Theatre in Los Angeles in 2017.

Spencer Breslin (“The Happening”) and Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”) are set to star in the film, a faithful adaptation of Bressack Sr.’s show about two playwrights tasked with creating a new “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller” who find their story coming to life as they write.
