Josh Hartnett Hunts a Sea Monster in First Look From New Netflix Thriller Series
Image
Months after the world gushed over Josh Hartnett’s casting in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity, the 47-year-old actor landed another gig in a similarly thrilling production. In May 2022, Hartnett was announced as the lead of an untitled Netflix limited series, marking the first cast member to be revealed. This new project is described as an eerie supernatural thriller set in Newfoundland, where it is currently being filmed.

As production is fully underway, fans can get a glimpse of Hartnett behind the scenes thanks to What’s on Netflix’s newly-released set photos, which were taken on July 19, per SplashNews. At the time, the actor was filming scenes in remote areas of Newfoundland, and as seen in the images, he was working on the deck of a boat named “High Hopes” with several crew members. In addition to Hartnett, other stars confirmed to appear are Mackenzie Davis...

Natasha Henstridge, Joshua Close, and Charlie Heaton cast in Netflix’s untitled Newfoundland sea creature show
Josh Hartnett
A couple of months ago, it was announced that Josh Hartnett (Trap) would be starring in the Netflix streaming service’s Untitled Newfoundland Project. A couple of weeks ago, we learned that Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil) was joining him in the cast. They are Natasha Henstridge (Species), Joshua Close (Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey), and Charlie Heaton, who recently wrapped up his work on the Netflix series Stranger Things.

Created by Jesse McKeown, the Newfoundland show will follow a hard-bitten fisherman (Hartnett), who must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life when a mysterious sea creature terrorizes a remote Newfoundland town. Sounds like the makings of a good time to me. Here’s hoping McKeown has come up with a...

Luca Guadagnino Hails This 23% Rotten Jason Statham Bomb as One of This Century’s Greatest Films
Image
The New York Times has marked the 21st century hitting the quarter pole by asking a variety of luminaries for their ten best films of the century so far. One such notable is Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino. His list features a number of universally acclaimed films...and one big Jason Statham-starring outlier. Among the arthouse fare on the Italian filmmaker's list is Ghosts of Mars, a John Carpenter science fiction horror movie that was both a critical and commercial disaster upon its release in 2001.

Guadagnino's list contains a number of films that you would expect to find on such a ranking, including Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love, David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, and Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millennium Mambo. Ghosts of Mars, which currently holds a 23% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made back half of its $28 million budget at the box office,...

These Two Underrated John Carpenter Horror Classics Are Getting the Spooky 4K Steelbook Treatment From Scream Factory
Image
When people think about John Carpenter's legendary horror contributions, Halloween, The Thing, and They Live are usually the first films to come to mind. Even underrated gems like The Fog and Christine may even be brought up before deep cuts like Prince of Darkness and Ghosts of Mars. These two ambitious genre pieces by the filmmaker in the late '80s and early 2000s, respectively, rarely get the respect they deserve. Scream Factory recently put Ghosts of Mars on 4K, but if you weren’t a hardcore horror fan you were probably scratching your head at that release. However, now Scream Factory has returned to release a new 4K version of Ghosts of Mars alongside Prince of Darkness.

These versions are 4K/Blu-ray combo pack steelbooks featuring brand-new chilling artwork. Prince of Darkness has a green-centric design that focuses on the main threat of the sci-fi nightmare, a container of mysterious ooze.

Jackie Chan Wants Rush Hour 4 To Happen, But He's Worried About One Thing
Image
Fighting can be a good thing in the right context. For example, when you really believe in something, it's imperative to make your feelings known if that will help others see where you're coming from. Life requires us to step up and advocate for ourselves when we have some skin in the game, and that can extend across all the periods of life, from young to old. Just this week, Jackie Chan decided to take matters into his own hands with "Rush Hour 4," as he feels like the opportunity to make the sequel to the fan-favorite franchise might be slipping away. He's got one big request, and the producers should probably listen to him after how "Rush Hour 3" went, because it could end up making or breaking "Rush Hour 4" for everyone involved.

Jackie Chan has been doing some limited media interviews for "Karate Kid Legends," and that...

7 Canceled Teen Fantasy Shows That Still Haunt Fans Today
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If you still remember teen fantasy shows like The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale that went on for far too long, even after their stories had no steam left, but you might not remember the shows in this list, as they had so much more story to tell, but they were canceled way too soon. Teen fantasy shows were all the rage in the 2010s and that’s why there were so many of them but most of them didn’t hit as hard as The Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf, but that doesn’t mean that the shows that were canceled were not as good or even better then these two shows. That’s the reason why we decided to compile a list of seven great (or underrated) teen fantasy shows that had great potential but were canceled way too soon.

Wtf Happened to Jason Statham?
Image
When you think of Jason Statham, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If it’s a fit bald dude beating the shit out of a nameless goon, good. That means we’re on the same page. Range is not Jason Statham’s forte, nor would we expect his characters to be able to spell “forte”. But the man has marked himself as maybe The action star in modern movies. And that’s good enough for us and his millions of fans. As Frank Martin said in The Transporter: Never change the deal.

Jason Statham was born on July 26th, 1967 in Shirebrook, England. A natural and gifted athlete, Statham was competing in everything from football to diving (he would later be inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame). Then came modelling because, well, look at that jawline!

But it was the screen he was destined for.

The Frightening Frontier: Five Horror Westerns to Stream This Week
Image
The isolation of the Wild West, the ever-present danger of starvation, unforgiving terrain, and the rougher way of life in period settings make westerns well suited to the horror genre. Yet it’s not often that the two genres cross paths; the horror western is a niche subgenre compared to horror’s other genre pairings, like the horror-comedy.

Even the horror western’s more well known entries, like Near Dark or Ravenous, don’t appear on streaming often. Luckily, there are plenty of other entries in the horror western category on streaming, some overlooked, that capture the tension, isolation, and danger of the wild frontier.

Here’s where to stream five of them this week.

Grant Rosenmeyer, Sean San José, Nora Dunn, More Are ‘Behind The Eight-Ball’
Image
Exclusive: Grant Rosenmeyer, Sean San José (Sing Sing), Nora Dunn, Katherine Cunningham (Yellowstone) and Alexis Allotta (Happily Never After) are starring in the semi-autobiographical drama Behind the Eight-Ball. The pic reps the feature directorial debut of Nathan Israileff.

Loosely inspired by Israileff’s experiences, Behind the Eight-Ball follows Trevor (Rosenmeyer) a high-functioning cocaine addict whose spiraling substance abuse threatens his career and closest relationships – forcing him to confront his demons and fight for redemption as his life unravels around him.

Says the filmmaker, “The film is a ‘love letter’ to functional addicts who are afraid to speak up or admit embarrassment for their ongoing issues, letting them know they are not alone and the depression they feel is felt by many.”

Israileff and Rosenmeyer are producing through their companies Artisanal Interrobang and Florida Hill respectively alongside producer Katelyn Henslin.

‘Crimes of the Devil’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: AnnaLynne McCord, Dean Cain, Natasha Henstridge, James Russo, Ryan Bates, Cami Storm, Zaina Juliette, Lametria Jackson, John Redlinger | Written by John Spare | Directed by Tommy Stovall

One of our remits here at Nerdly is to champion no-budget and low-budget movies, uncovering hidden gems that might not have that “big budget” polish but make up for it with creativity, commitment, and bold storytelling. Crimes of the Devil fits that bill to a tee – it’s an intriguing entry in the psychological thriller genre, offering a mix of theological horror, crime drama, and moral ambiguity. While it does have its flaws, it’s an ambitious effort that deserves some attention.

Crimes of the Devil follows a woman, Eve, who commits a shocking act of violence and then, under interrogation, begins unravelling the mysterious and eerie circumstances that led her to that point. There’s an almost stage-play quality to the film,...

Natasha Henstridge in La Mutante (1995)
Species | 1990s horror is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK
Natasha Henstridge in La Mutante (1995)
The 1995 hit Species is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical media release in the UK this June. More details here.

Just recently on this very site, we were digging into the behind the scenes story of 1995’s hit Species. Starring Natasha Henstridge Sir Ben Kingsley and Michael Madsen – and it was Henstridge’s feature debut – the film also posted some superb creature designs from the legendary H R Giger. Roger Donaldson directed, and MGM had both a hit movie, and a chance to spit out a sequel or two.

The original film though has now been selected for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release, with 88 Films picking up the UK rights to the movie. It’s going to be releasing a deluxe dual format release – that thus includes a Blu-ray as well – on 23rd June 2025. It’s unclear as of yet whether there’s going to be much in...

Horror Master John Carpenter Directed Jason Statham In A Colossal Flop
Image
The universe can be a pretty crummy place sometimes, so it's important to seek out every last nugget of joy or, absent something so extravagant, just a smile here and there to ward off total despair. You could argue that we don't even deserve the latter in extraordinarily crummy times such as these, and maybe this is true, but I like getting out of bed in the morning, so I'll afford myself the privilege of hope however it materializes. Did the Cleveland Cavaliers win last night? That's one foot on the floor. Did I text with some out-of-town friends I haven't personally seen in months or years? There's another. Did John Carpenter just win a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association? Oh baby, we're up and headed for that first cup.

The New Hollywood era produced more commercially successful and critically acclaimed filmmakers than the man who gave us "Halloween,...

Species | The evolution and surprising impact of a 1990s monster movie
Image
Originally conceived as a sci-fi thriller with philosophical undertones, Species emerged as one of 1995’s weirdest monster movies.

The early 90s digital effects revolution birthed many monsters. Sam Neill and Laura Dern were menaced by velociraptors in the ground-breaking Jurassic Park in 1993. Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller were chased around a museum by a rhino-like behemoth in The Relic (1996). Samuel L Jackson was rudely interrupted mid-monologue by an intellectual shark in Deep Blue Sea (1999).

Few monster movies were as eclectically cast or as zany as 1995’s Species. Somehow, director Roger Donaldson managed to convince such acting greats as Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker and Alfred Molina to appear as members of a specialist team on the trail of a randy human-alien hybrid monster (Natasha Henstridge) seducing assorted men in Los Angeles.

It’s all delightful B-movie hokum, even if the film’s classier elements – the quality cast, the design of...

Is Meghan Markle’s New Cooking Show Her Last Chance at Netflix?
Image
Meghan Markle’s Last Stand: The Kitchen

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, never in the history of streaming has so much been paid to so few for so little. But with the debut of the much anticipated With Love, Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will have perhaps one last chance to prove they’re really worth the $100 million Netflix ponied up in that 2020 five-year deal to produce and appear in shows and movies. (Update: The series was supposed to release Jan. 15, but was pushed at Markle’s request to March 4 due to the L.A. wildfires.) So far, the couple’s output has been less than majestic. Yes, their initial 2022 domestic life docuseries, Harry & Meghan, was a hit, even if critics roasted it back at home (“So sickening I almost brought up my breakfast,” The Guardian sneered). But everything the Duke and Duchess have churned out since — their social justice series,...

Amazon Licenses Unfinished, Untitled Melania Trump Documentary from Director Brett Ratner
Image
The former and incoming First Lady of the United States Melania Trump is coming to Amazon Prime Video — and to theaters.

Amazon has announced that Prime Video has licensed an upcoming documentary on Melania Trump that is being directed by Brett Ratner, the director and producer of films like “Rush Hour 2” who has been on the outs with Hollywood since the #MeToo era.

The movie began filming in December 2024, shortly after Donald Trump won the election, and intends to be completed and released in the second half of 2025. The untitled documentary project will be released theatrically as well as available exclusively on Prime Video, though no specific release plans in terms of the scope of the theatrical release were detailed.

An Amazon spokesperson said the film will give “an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look” at the First Lady, and that she will be executive producing the film alongside Fernando Sulichin for New Element Media.

Disgraced Director Brett Ratner is Making a Melania Trump Documentary
Image
No one stays canceled forever, it seems. After being accused by seven different women of sexual misconduct and assault, Brett Ratner's Hollywood career was effectively over. Warner Bros.'s studio dropped him and all future projects in 2017, and he hasn't worked since. That is, until January 5, 2025, when news came of Ratner's big comeback: directing a documentary on former and future First Lady Melania Trump for Amazon Prime Video.

Filming has already begun, Variety reports. An Amazon spokesperson said the film is "an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look" at Trump, with the First Lady set to executive produce the project alongside New Element Media’s Fernando Sulichin. The spokesperson continued: "Prime Video will be sharing more details on the project as filming progresses and release plans are finalized. We are excited to share this truly unique story with our millions of customers around the world."

Brett Ratner to Direct Melania Trump Documentary
Image
Disgraced filmmaker Brett Ratner will direct a new documentary on First Lady Melania Trump, which will be released in theaters and stream on Prime Video in the second half of 2025.

Promising an “unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look,” production on the documentary began in December 2024, with Trump herself serving as an executive producer. As such, it’s probably safe to assume the film will be heavily sanitized, likely avoiding any controversies surrounding her or her husband, President Donald Trump.

The documentary is the latest example of Big Tech and Hollywood’s embrace of the Trumps ahead of their impending return to the White House later this month. In recent weeks, several high-profile CEOs, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Additionally, Amazon donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund.

Meanwhile, the project marks Ratner’s first major production since he was accused of sexual misconduct by six women,...

'Species' Becomes #4 Movie on Tubi This Week
Image
The 90s were the salad days for sci-fi horror popcorn flicks. It was a time when wild B-movies got A-movie budgets and brought the visuals and campy excess of Roger Corman to the mainstream. One of the divisive films of that time is Species - a serviceable and sometimes maligned creature feature - currently #4 on Tubi's charts. The cheesy exploitation film is not without its flaws, but audiences are finding a lot to enjoy, as the once deep cable mainstay finds new life on streaming.

Species begins with a fun premise - a decoded alien message from space gives a team of unscrupulous scientists instructions on how to splice human and alien DNA. Because all scientists in movies have maxed out stats in ingenuity but zero foresight, they give life to Sil, an alien-human hybrid that is hellbent on reproducing and escapes her laboratory prison. The result is a...

Jason Statham Should Redo His Failed John Wayne Remake & Correct Its Biggest Error
Image
Jason Statham should remake Ghosts of Mars, his failed updating of a John Wayne classic. While Statham had appeared in some music videos prior to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, that 1998 gangster comedy served as his acting debut. Nobody was looking at Statham as the next big action star at that point, but his casting in 2002's The Transporter completely altered the course of his career. Jason Statham action movies are now an indelible part of pop culture, but John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars actually served as his introduction to the genre.

This 2001 sci-fi actioner cast Statham as Sergeant Jericho, part of a squad of Martian police officers who find themselves besieged by possessed miners with a fondness for decapitation. Carpenter's movie is a blend of his past work, but it also allowed Statham to show off his fighting and shooting skills. Ghosts of Mars was Statham's first...

Vanessa Marano's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Vanessa Marano movies and TV shows include some very popular television series as well as a handful of smaller movies showing the actor's versatility. Marano was born in Los Angeles, and her mother owned the Agoura Children's Theatre, Marano and her sister got their start in acting from a very young age. Marano got her first professional acting role when she was only seven, and she has picked up several roles over her young career on television and in theatre productions.

Marano enjoyed her breakout role on the police procedural series Without a Trace, where she and her sister play Jack Malone's (Anthony Lapaglia) daughters, and her career only skyrocketed from there. She had an important recurring role on Gilmore Girls that garnered her a lot of attention, and she even won a year-long role on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. Marano has...

Jason Statham's First Action Movie Was A Stealth Remake Of This 1959 John Wayne Classic
Image
Jason Statham's first action role was in Ghosts of Mars, which was itself a stealth remake of a John Wayne Western. Released in 2001, Ghosts of Mars marked the final John Carpenter movie for a decade, with the legendary filmmaker taking a long break after feeling burnt out with the industry. The film itself is a fusion of sci-fi, action and horror, with a dash of Western thrown into the pot. Ghosts of Mars was also one of a run of films set on Mars during this period, including Val Kilmer's Red Planet and Mission to Mars.

The movie feels like a mixtape of Carpenter's previous work; Ghosts of Mars takes the cop shop setting of Assault on Precinct 13, the paranoia of The Thing with a main character who feels very much like Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken. There was even a debunked rumor Ghosts of Mars was almost the third Escape From.

Jason Stathams Ridiculous Campy Ghosts of Mars Is Worth Watching
Image
Director John Carpenter is a master of the horror genre, creating iconic classics like Halloween and The Thing that would go on to be major influences in the genre. On the other hand, Jason Statham has become one of the most recognizable action heroes. He got his start with Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and went on to lead franchises like The Expendables and The Transporter. Both men are incredibly talented in their respective fields, yet the two did cross paths on one production.

John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars saw him working with actor Jason Statham and offered the action star his first foray into the horror genre. Despite the talent behind the project, Ghosts of Mars did not fare well at the box office. We will examine how the movie came together, its failure to impress critics, and how time has played in the movie's favor.

Rush Hour 4 Reportedly Being Shopped Around Hollywood with Controversial Director Attached
Image
Rush Hour 4 is reportedly being pitched to various studios in an attempt to get the project off the ground. The fourth installment in the franchise, starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, could also mark controversial director Brett Ratner's return to filmmaking.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, executives at Lionsgate held a meeting to discuss Rush Hour 4 in July 2024. While other franchises, such as John Wick, have experienced success with new additions, the problem with getting the action comedy off the ground is the potential involvement of Ratner, who directed the first three Rush Hour movies. Sources familiar with the talks said the filmmaker, who has been accused of sexual misconduct, was part of the pitch for the fourth installment.

Rush Hour 4 Reportedly Could Be Green Lit with Brett Ratner Directing
Image
Brett Ratner has not made a film in seven years following multiple allegations of sexual assault, but it appears he wants to attempt a comeback with Rush Hour 4. Rush Hour, which starred Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, is one of the defining buddy comedy movies of all time and was a big franchise for New Line Cinema in the late '90s and 2000s. Aside from a short-lived television series, the franchise has remained dormant since Rush Hour 3 was released to mostly negative reviews in 2007. With Bad Boys Ride or Die and Beverly Hills Cop 4 recently proving that there is an appetite for nostalgic buddy comedies, it makes sense that a Rush Hour revival is now in consideration.

John Carpenter's Scariest Horror or Suspense Movies
Image
John Carpenter's prolific career is mind-blowing. He's the director of dozens of great titles spanning multiple subjects and film genres, from drama to science fiction to action. But of course, he's more often remembered as a master of horror for his pioneering and well-executed ideas that changed the genre forever. A writer-director-producer with strong trademarks, he's also a fantastic composer who's responsible for unforgettable soundtracks. "Movies are pieces of film stuck together in a certain rhythm (...) like a musical composition. The rhythm you create affects the audience," Carpenter said in a The New Yorker profile published in 1980.

Carpenter's approach to horror as something with a beat that makes people feel alive -- not just scared -- and that gives food for thought is why his style is unparalleled. With so many theatrical releases and television features under his belt, most of Carpenter's movies have something scary to offer, even when they're not straight-up horror.

Ghosts Of Mars Was Jason Statham's First Action Role
Image
Statham began his action movie career with John Carpenter's 'Ghosts Of Mars' in 2001 alongside Ice Cube. Despite 'Ghosts of Mars' being a critical disappointment, it was a stepping stone for Statham. Statham's first lead action role came a year later with 'The Transporter', solidifying his status as an action star.

John Carpenter's Ghosts Of Mars (2001) provided Jason Statham with his first big action role. Statham made his movie debut with Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and they soon reunited with 2000's Snatch, but while he impressed in both of those efforts with his comic chops, the roles in these British crime movies did not offer much of a hint at the action hero Statham would become in later roles. The first sign of that came with the actor teaming up with Carpenter, the legendary filmmaker behind The Thing and Escape from New York.

Jason Statham's 23-Year-Old Action Movie Debut Proves The Biggest Unfulfilled Potential Of His Career
Image
Despite his success in action movies, Jason Statham's first true action film, Ghosts of Mars, was a critical and commercial disappointment. Statham's role in Ghosts of Mars showcased his potential in horror, but he has not pursued the genre further in his career. Considering his versatility as an actor, fans may still see Jason Statham explore horror films as he continues to evolve in the industry.

Jason Statham is one of the biggest action movie stars in modern Hollywood, yet the 56-year-old's first foray into the genre 23 years ago actually reveals another surprising aspect of his career one that inadvertently highlights a missed opportunity. Having featured in over 60 movies, Statham is a certified industry veteran. Having helmed many of the biggest action blockbusters of the past few decades, it's hard to argue that his career hasn't been a huge success. Nevertheless, as with any actor, Statham still has some...

‘Cinderella’s Revenge’ Review
Image
Stars: Stephanie Lodge, Lauren Staerck, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis, Darrell Griggs, Natasha Henstridge, Mark Collier, Stephen Staley | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Andy Edwards

Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.

It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

Interview: Natasha Henstridge Talks The Insanity Of Cinderella’s Revenge + Future of Species Franchise
Image
It seems like every other week there’s a new horror release based on some classic literary character. Whether it’s Pinocchio or Winnie the Pooh, there doesn’t seem to be a sign of them slowing down. And this time their sights are on Cinderella. I’m sure you can imagine all the ways that classic tale can be given a horror slant, with Cinderella’s awful treatment by her stepfamily. The movie itself has some fun moments (you can check out my review Here) but the real highlight is Natasha Henstridge as the Fairy Godmother. She relishes every moment of screen time and looks to be having a blast. So I was excited to be able to talk to her about the part.

Plus, if you know me, you know I’m going to ask Ms. Henstridge about some random horror movie she’s in. The culprit this...

Cinderella’s Revenge Review
Image
Plot: Cinderella is pushed too far by her evil stepsisters and stepmother, which causes her to switch out her glass shoes and use the assistance of her Fairy Godmother to seek bloody vengeance.

Review: Everyone knows what they’re in for when it comes to these movies at this point, right? I don’t need to lay out the schpeal about public domain horror? Good, because it seems as though these films are here to stay. And in instances like this, I kind of get it. A twisted take on a tale that’s been told a thousand times? We saw Seth Grahame-Smith do something similar with his Pride, Prejudice and Zombies and even Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. So it’s not like this is a brand-new concept. The real question remains: how well does this film do with transforming the Cinderella story into one of horror?

Cinderella’s Revenge is a pretty basic concept,...

Bad influence by Paul Risker
Lauren Staerck and Natasha Henstridge in Cinderella's Revenge

Natasha Henstridge plays Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge. It’s a dark, twisted and blood-soaked take on the classic fairy tale, transforming Cinderella into a violent vigilante out for revenge against her wicked stepsisters.

Speaking with Eye For Film, Henstridge recalls daunting and fond memories of her experience making Species, and the joy of being a devil on the shoulder.

Paul Risker: How did you catch the acting bug?

Natasha Henstridge: Even before school, I was a ham. A lot of actors are very quiet and private people, that are out there in the world exploring through other characters. That was not me - I was the kid who was super-hyper, had a camera in someone's face all the time at Christmas functions, pretending I was a reporter or interviewer, wanting to get the nitty-gritty and understand who they were.

‘Cinderella’s Revenge’ Review – Horror Adaptation Returns the Fairy Tale to Its Gruesome Roots
Image
Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.

The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

Natasha Henstridge on Species & Her Horror Fairytale Cinderella's Revenge
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Sometimes, living “happily ever after” means embarking on a blood-soaked path of revenge. That’s the case in the horror fairytale Cinderella’s Revenge. Directed by Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers), the film finds Lauren Staerck (Trust) having a helluva time as Rella until her fairy godmother shows up. That would be Natasha Henstridge (Species), who suggests there’s more to life than just nabbing Prince Charming, especially the shady one featured in Edwards’ gritty comedy horror film.

The story thus far: Cinderella’s (Staerck) wicked stepsisters and stepmother are throwing far too much shade. Somehow, our dear maiden winds up at the ball — nice touch having the “carriage” here come in the form of a Tesla — and her eyes twinkle with the prince and all that. But he’s not the charming gent we all remember him to be. Glass slippers appear.
