Johnny Dangerously: The Best Movie You Never Saw
Image
Ya know that feeling when you watch something dumb, and even though you know it’s stupid, you can’t help but laugh and enjoy yourself? The 1980s are full of comedies like that. Yeah, we know they’re dumb and not especially clever, but whatever, man, every now and then, you’re in a bad mood, and you want to turn your brain off. A gangster comedy in the vein of Airplane, Johnny Dangerously is probably a movie many younger viewers...

Richard M. Sherman, ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘It’s a Small World’ Songwriter, Dies at 95
Image
Richard M. Sherman, two-time Oscar winner who collaborated with brother Robert B. Sherman on the songs for “Mary Poppins,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the enduring Disneyland tune “It’s a Small World (After All),” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills due to age-related illness. He was 95.

The Sherman brothers worked in a job that no longer exists: inhouse songwriters for a studio. In their case, the studio was Disney, and the brothers were hired for that steady gig after their 1958 song “Tall Paul” was a hit for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.

In the early 1960s, they penned tunes for Hayley Mills in Disney films “The Parent Trap,” “In Search of the Castaways” and “Summer Magic,” as well as songs for “The Absent-Minded Professor” and “Moon Pilot”; Walt Disney, always aware of synergy, made sure his family comedies had a tune with radio-play potential. The Shermans wrote for...

The Popular 70s Sitcom That Brought Cheers' Masterminds Together
Image
You know, a wise man once said that sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.

"Cheers" is one of the best and most popular sitcoms of all time. That's not hyperbole, either — critics and fans alike will sing the praises of the show until you can't stand it anymore. "Okay, I get it!" you'll say. "You love 'Cheers'! Leave me alone!" Running for 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993, and starring Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson, and more, "Cheers" was actually a flop during its first season, finishing last in the ratings during its premiere. Things were so bad, in fact, that the network almost pulled the plug. Eventually, though, "Cheers" found its audience, and that audience couldn't get enough of the barflies and bartenders who called the show home.

The show sprang forth from creators Glen and Les Charles and James Burrows, and as it turns out,...

1974 Tony Awards: History was made with wins by ‘The River Niger’ and ‘Raisin’
Image
With the 96th Academy Awards in the history books, it’s time to become obsessed over the 77th Tony Awards. Nominations are April 30th with the awards set to air on CBS on June 16 from Lincoln Center. Among the contenders for Tony nominations are many musicals based on movies including “Back to the Future,’ “The Notebook,” “Water for Elephants” and “The Outsiders”: high profile revivals such as Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” with Jeremy Strong; “Cabaret” with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and the Who’s “Tommy”; imports from London and transfers from off-Broadway.

Do you remember the Tony landscape 50 years ago? The 28th annual honors took place April 21, 1974, at the Shubert Theater and aired on ABC. And to say it was a star-studded affair is something of an understatement. Robert Preston, Peter Falk, Cicely Tyson, Florence Henderson hosted; presenters included Al Pacino –-let’s hope he had better...

Tony Danza Won His Taxi Role Thanks To A Black Eye And A Broken Hand
Image
The classic sitcom "Taxi" has its fair share of interesting characters that work in New York City's Sunshine Cab Company, but arguably the tender heart at its center is boxer Tony Banta, played by Tony Danza. He's not always the brightest crayon in the box, but he's full of courage and love and would do just about anything for his friends. Despite being a bit of a womanizer early on, he's never cruel or lecherous like his boss Louie (Danny DeVito), and he is a fantastic friend to his co-worker Elaine (Marilu Henner). He's also surprisingly sweet despite his punchy side gig, serving as the template for later sitcom characters like Joey from "Friends." It's truly hard to imagine "Taxi" without him.

What's even harder to imagine is the character of Tony being played by anybody else. He's warm and earnest and bounces off great against some of the more cynical comedians on the cast.

How Andy Kaufman's Alter Ego Almost Took Down Taxi
Image
It took a savvy comedy fan to know what Andy Kaufman was doing with his career. More than a mere funnyman, Kaufman tended to satirize the trappings of standup comedy, often using his routines to play pranks on the audience. As detailed in Miloš Forman's 1999 biopic "Man on the Moon," Kaufman wanted to host a TV special that contained artificial signal "static" in the hope that viewers would get up out of their seats and whack their "broken" TV sets. That's not funny for the audience, but it's certainly funny for Kaufman.

Part of Kaufman's satirical act was a whole separate stage persona named Tony Clifton, a foul-mouthed, alcoholic lounge singer who cussed and behaved badly. Clifton was also occasionally played by Kaufman's close friend and associate Bob Zmuda, allowing Clifton and Kaufman to occasionally appear in the same room, calling the reality of the character into question. Tony Clifton...

Danny DeVito, Tony Danza & More ‘Taxi’ Cast Reunite On ‘The View’
Image
The View hosted an epic reunion of the cast of Taxi, 45 years after the series premiered on ABC. The ladies hosted Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner and Carol Kane for the celebration.

“For us, from the first day, the first moment we got together, it was like a family,” said DeVito, who played Louie De Palma, about the continued popularity of the series. “We were hugging and kissing the first day and we didn’t even really know each other. We read the script and everyone was falling into place. It was miraculous. But we appreciated it and never took it for granted. We always felt like the work was the most important thing.”

Added Hirsch, who played Alex Reiger, “We said, we gotta do this. If we’re not good, it’s not gonna work. They canceled shows left and right in those years.

‘Thank You Very Much’ Review: An Andy Kaufman Doc That Errs on the Side of Over-Explanation
Image
Nearly 40 years after outré comedian Andy Kaufman’s death from cancer, there remain fans who are certain that a faked demise was Kaufman’s most ambitious and committed hoax.

Until proven otherwise, this is a ridiculous conviction. That said, it’s probably no more or less absurd than believing that Andy Kaufman is a figure who could be explained or even adequately summarized in a conventional documentary. There are some outsized personalities so cloaked in mythology that even the tallest tales about them seem believable, but Kaufman’s personality was so cloaked in subterfuge that any attempt to deconstruct that personality or his behavior is going to come across as a bit within a bit.

This is the problem that Alex Braverman’s new documentary Thank You Very Much runs into. The documentary is filled with fantastic footage from Kaufman’s fearless performances, mostly familiar but still wildly iconoclastic. It...

‘Haunted Mansion’ Stages Disneyland Premiere Without Stars
Image
The cast of Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” were only at their premiere in spirit. Following the breakout of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the stars of the film skipped out on the Saturday night premiere for the theme park film adaptation

The movie, the second adaptation of Disney’s iconic Haunted Mansion attraction after the 2003 Eddie Murphy film, stars a large ensemble cast that includes Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Hasan Minhaj, Chase W. Dillon, Marilu Henner, and Lindsay Lamb. None of the actors attended the red carpet at Disneyland in Anaheim, according to Variety. Under the terms of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on Thursday, guild members are not able to take part in press junkets or promotional duties for studio films they are in while the guild is in a work stoppage.

Instead, the carpet — which took place at the...

Disney holds 'Haunted Mansion' red carpet minus actors, in first major event hit by actors strike
Image
Los Angeles, July 16 (Ians) Disney went ahead with the red carpet premiere of its latest production ‘Haunted Mansion’ recently, making it the first major movie world premiere after SAG-AFTRA began their strike.

As reported by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, stars Tiffany Haddish, Lakeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hasan Minhaj, Marilu Henner, Lindsay Lamb, director Justin Simien, producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, executive producers Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman and composer Kris Bowers were initially scheduled to walk the red carpet, held in front of the Disneyland theme park’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ ride in Anaheim.

But following the actors’ strike called on Thursday, the stars were no longer able to attend the event.

Strike guidelines prohibit not only on-camera work but also promotional activity, including premieres, interviews, festivals, FYC events, award shows and podcasts.

While several studios and streamers have opted to cancel their upcoming events,...

SAG-AFTRA Strike: Disney Characters Walk Carpet Instead of Stars at ‘Haunted Mansion’ Premiere
Image
The show must go on apparently for Disney’s Haunted Mansion, as the premiere at Disneyland continued to take place on Saturday, despite SAG-AFTRA voting to strike on Thursday morning.

As Variety reported earlier in the week, the film’s debut was going to happen regardless of how the strike vote landed. On Saturday, instead of the usual interviews with actors and actresses as they walked the red carpet, the press was met with Disneyland characters strutting their stuff as “guests,” as Variety shared. There were appearances by Cruella de Vil,...
