The Voice Recap: Which Singers’ Blind Ambition Got Them Deemed Battle-Ready?
Image
Pitches were made. Blocks were played. Canadian Mounties were brought on stage. But did any of the talent trotted out by Night 3 of The Voice’s Season 27 Blind Auditions live up to the hype? Read on, and we’ll discuss.

Divighn (Team Michael), “I Got You (I Feel Good)” — Grade: B+ | Maybe this grade should be an all-the-way A. Divighn showed us range and flair (those yips!), and his voice never faltered even while putting on a heckuva stage show. But the overall impression the two-chair turn left was “fun” rather than “fantastic.” Maybe, as John Legend was, I was listening for some more “stank.

We Think Mark Wahlberg Was Jealous Of Andy Serkis During Their Interview On Graham Norton
Image
Wahlberg's 2017 appearance on Graham Norton led fans to believe he was envious of Andy Serkis' talents. Serkis, known for his ape roles, showed enthusiasm on the show, contrasting Wahlberg's perceived attitude. Wahlberg admitted his version of 'Planet of the Apes' didn't match up to the success of other films in the franchise.

Mark Wahlberg and Andy Serkis appeared together on The Graham Norton Show in 2017, and fans surmised that the former appeared jealous of his fellow actor.

Wahlberg has always had something of a complicated relationship with fans. On the one hand, his impressive body of work on the big screen is more than enough proof that audiences really appreciate his talents.

At the same time, the Transformers star has not always curried public favor. For instance, when rumors surfaced in 2023 that he might be retiring from acting, an excited fan took to social media and proclaimed, We won!

Angelo Bruschini, Longtime Massive Attack Guitarist, Dead at 62
Image
Angelo Bruschini, the masterful guitarist and producer who played with Massive Attack, The Blue Aeroplanes, and others, has died from lung cancer. He was 62 years old.

The news of Bruschini’s passing arrived on Tuesday via a post from his wife, Jessica, on Facebook. “I am very sad to announce that my beautiful husband, Angelo Bruschini, died on 23rd October 2023 at 12.15 a.m.,” she wrote. “It was from a rare and aggressive cancer — pleomorphic carcinoma.”

Massive Attack have also responded to the news. “A singularly brilliant and eccentric talent,” a post from the band’s official Twitter page reads. “Impossible to quantify your contribution to the Massive Attack canon. How lucky we were to share such a life together.”

Bruschini himself posted on Facebook about his condition earlier this year, writing in July that his prognosis did not look good. “Twice now I have been told ‘Good luck’ by specialists...

Flashback: Paul McCartney Sings ‘Let It Be’ With David Bowie, Pete Townshend at Live Aid
Paul McCartney
It was 50 years ago this month that Paul McCartney told the world that the Beatles had broken up. “Personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family,” he wrote in a “self-interview” that accompanied the release of his debut solo LP, McCartney. “Temporary or permanent? I don’t really know.”

Just one month later, the Beatles released the documentary Let It Be and an album of the same name. It came out after Abbey Road, but was largely recorded prior to it.

The Voice UK: Sheena, Nk - Who had the best audition?
We're getting down to the wire on The Voice UK tonight, with those teams looking mighty full. With just one week left of blind auditions after tonight, it is seriously tense in those coaches' chairs...

Sure, there was time for them to have a little fun - we're looking at you, the sequence of Sir Tom Jones saying "yeah" repeatedly (which we loved, obviously) - but they also had to get serious. So congratulations are in order for the six acts that made it through tonight - here's what we made of them...

1. Sheena McHugh

Song: 'Hold On, We're Going Home' - Drake

Team: Team Will (all four coaches turned)

Sheena's not exactly had an easy time of it - she lost her voice for six months after a dreadful car accident in which she ruptured her spleen, tore her intestine, broke her back... I mean, wow. As if that wasn't emotional enough,...

Strange Hill High: The best kids' show on television
"Kids' TV isn't what it used to be."

We've all said it, our rose-tinted spectacles firmly affixed - but there's an animated show airing right now on Cbbc that's earned plaudits across the board.

Strange Hill High - a fantasy mystery series created using a combination of puppetry and digital effects - was nominated for a BAFTA in 2013 and has been branded "sharp, funny" and "a sure-fire success" by critics.

Set in a school filled with fantastical secrets, the series follows the quick-witted and street smart Mitchell Tanner (Doc Brown), ever-confident Becky Butters (Emma Kennedy) and class nerd Templeton.

"It's my favourite thing that I've ever done - even more than The Simpsons," says head writer Josh Weinstein, who penned some of the Springfield clan's most memorable episodes - 'Who Shot Mr Burns?' , '22 Short Films About Springfield' and more - and worked as showrunner on the long-running animation...

Cannes 2014: Pride Review
A feel-good movie about the 1984 miners’ strike, Thatcherism and the scourge of Aids is a tough nut, but with Pride Matthew Warchus has cracked it. Garnering an ovation on its premiere here in Cannes, Pride can certainly feel proud of itself.

We meet Mark (Ben Schnetzer) in his council flat, kicking out last night’s conquest and collecting buckets to take to the 1984 Gay Pride march. The idea is to show solidarity with the striking miners, with whom the gay community feels an affinity, for it’s now the miners’ turn to feel the full force of the law, literally. On the march we meet budding pastry chef and photographer Joe (George MacKay), soon nicknamed Bromley by his new-found band of mates. He represents the typical scared closet gay, living in suburbia with his folks and too timid to come out. Joe’s courage gains strength as the Lgsm group gains momentum,...

'Stay Unhappy With Me'
Alison Moyet
Alison Moyet, "The Minutes" (Cooking Vinyl/Metropolis Records)

Alison Moyet is not trying to impress you. True to her punk roots, the English artist didn't make "The Minutes," her first studio album since 2007, to please anyone. And, by doing so, she has created a remarkable collection that takes her rich contralto to new edges.

Moyet, the iconic voice in the 1980s synth-pop duo Yazoo (aka Yaz), revives her electronic roots here, merging with an experimental blend of synth sounds that express modernity, technology and introspection. Producer Guy Sigsworth has built brilliant moments into the album's fabric, demanding listeners be armed with good headphones.

Moyet's voice is at its most complex and her lyrics are darkly poetic, in perfect defiance of commercial conventions. As she proclaims on "Right as Rain," an ubercool club piece, "If you can't be happy with me, be unhappy with me, stay unhappy with me."...

Why Alison Moyet Feels Sorry For Adele Being Compared With Her
Alison Moyet
Alison Moyet despairs of "lazy comparisons" that put her side by side with Adele - "purely for the fact that we were two fat girls singing torch songs. It always happens."

The former Yazoo singer, whose album 'the minutes' has been released to huge plaudits this week, presents her evidence with the language she hears on TV talent shows...

Alison Moyet is back, and happier with her sound than ever

"If you watch 'X Factor', every time a fat girl came on, it was 'the next Alison Moyet'," she explains. "Now it's 'the next Adele'. It doesn't hurt me, but I think it's like categorising two gay actors together, or ginger-haired men... it's just silly categorising.

"I do get that we're both stationary performers, but there'll be a talented man, with an electronic background, who has much more in common with me, musically. Or even Pj Harvey...

Exclusive Stream: Alison Moyet Debuts New Album Here, Plus Tour Dates
Alison Moyet
Alison Moyet is back after six years with her album 'the minutes'.

Despite selling more than 20 million singles in a 30-year career, Alison Moyet has always successfully resisted being any kind of pop puppet, so we can believe her when she describes this as her "happiest studio experience".

Huffington Post UK is pleased to host the exclusive stream of 'the minutes' - Listen Above.

Alison Moyet is back, sounding as distinctive as ever

‘the minutes’ was produced by Guy Sigsworth, known for his work with Madonna, Goldie, Robyn and Madonna, and gives proper foundation for Alison Moyet's unique, powerful, low voice.

“I avoided listening to anything during the process of writing and recording this album, choosing instead to be lead by my own melodic voice, the one I now find myself with 30-years-in”, says Alison. “Guy Sigsworth returns me to a programmer's world and marries it with perfect musicality.

Brian Hibbard obituary
Actor and lead singer with the Flying Pickets during the early 1980s, he went on to take roles in several popular TV series, including Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale

Brian Hibbard, who has died of prostate cancer aged 65, first found fame as a member of the Flying Pickets, a group of actors who left the socialist playwright John McGrath's 7:84 theatre group to woo audiences through their a cappella singing. They topped the pop charts in 1983 with a cover version of Only You, trumping Yazoo, the duo of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, who had reached No 2 with their original recording. This Christmas No 1 single and the group's flamboyant look – gaudy suits, large hats and Hibbard's massive sideburns – led to brief stardom for the Flying Pickets, a name coined because some of them had supported the miners during their strikes of 1972 and 1974. They hit the Top 10 again with another cover,...

The two original members of Depeche Mode are working together under the new moniker Vcmg and plan to release a series of EPs starting Nov. 30. Clarke left Depeche Mode after the British electronic band’s 1981 debut, “Speak and Spell,” and went on to form Yaz with Alison Moyet, and, more recently, Erasure with Andy Bell. Gore, who took over primary song duties following Clarke’s departure, has stayed...

Film Pop 2011: Five Must See Films
Fall is the best time of year for music and film fans in Montreal. Festivals and shows a-plenty, for most it becomes a draconian decision between what to see and what to miss. A select few become so totally fixated on this decision making process that they fail to see anything at all.

For those living under a rock, Montreal’s premiere film festival Pop Montreal starts up this week. Though it’s diverse set of musical shows big and small are often the highlight, it is truly a multi-disciplinary fest and has a bit of everything, including a mini-film festival. Film Pop’s programming is helmed by Kier-La Janisse. For those who don’t recognize the name, she is the founder of Montreal’s own Montreal’s Psychotronic Film Centre, Blue Sunshine. A fan of all things cinema, there are few people more qualified to organize a kick-ass line-up as she is.

Total recall: why retromania is all the rage
From synth pop to Hollywood remakes to collecting manual typewriters, we're busy plundering the past. But why the fatal attraction?

There's no single thing that made me suddenly think, Hey, there's a book to be written about pop culture's chronic addiction to its own past. As the last decade unfolded, noughties pop culture became steadily more submerged in retro. Both inside music (reunion tours, revivalism, deluxe reissues, performances of classic albums in their entirety) and outside (the emergence of YouTube as a gigantic collective archive, endless movie remakes, the strange and melancholy world of retro porn), there was mounting evidence to indicate an unhealthy fixation on the bygone.

But if I could point to just one release that tipped me over the edge into bemused fascination with retromania, it would be 2006's Love, the Beatles remix project. Executed by George Martin and his son Giles to accompany the Cirque du Soleil spectacular in Las Vegas,...

Morning Meme: Gays Return To Daytime, Cazwell Wants To "Get My Money Back," and the "Venture Brothers" Renewed
So Days of Our Lives is planning a gay plotline. The question is who, and if the conservative soap will go the Nuke route with no sex, or the Kish route with a satisfying build, payoff, and then abrupt disappointment. Place your bets! And snicks, warm up the liveblog keyboard!

Kerry Eleveld, formerly of The Advocate, now of Equality Matters has done an investigation into how much money Chick-Fil-a is dumping into anti-gay hate groups. And while $1.1 million isn’t an insignificant amount of money, it’s far less than I expected over three years. But I’m still not eating their food.

It appears that the Exodus International app is gone from Apple’s iTunes Store. It was a hateful little thing, and we as consumers have the right to pressure Apple not to promote something we disagree with, or we can take our money elsewhere. But to me,...

This week's film events previews
Investigative Film Week, London

If your idea of investigative journalism is uncovering the truth about Brangelina's break-up, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate with a visit to this fascinating week-long festival. Each of the six films showing is followed by a Q&A with the director, and leading the pack is Günter Wallraff, whose latest, Black On White, sees him donning blackface to expose racism in Germany. There's also Afghanistan: On The Dollar Trail, a dangerous study of where aid money really goes, and a film that will make you think twice the next time you pour a cuppa, Flip The Coin: The Bitter Taste of Tea, which probes the dichotomy between the corporations who provide tea for the west and the poverty-stricken people who pick it for them.
