Keanu Reeves’ Ethnicity Makes His Underrated Thriller Even Better That Deserves a John Wick Style Franchise
Image
David Ayer‘s Street Kings (2008) may not be the most famous movie in Keanu Reeves’ oeuvre, but it is one of his best and most underrated works to date. However, what makes it even better is his mixed ethnicity, specifically Native Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese ancestry [via IMDb], which saves the film from being trapped in an age-old Hollywood stereotype, i.e., featuring a white male actor in the role of a hero and savior.

Moreover, the film’s over-the-top action sequences and lone hero on a path of vengeance make it a solid precursor to Reeves’s John Wick saga, giving Street Kings a good reason to deserve the franchise treatment from Hollywood.

In this adrenaline-infused cop drama littered with moments of typical street bravado and badge lingo, Street Kings refuses to be boring for even a minute with its constant testosterone-fueled sequences of action and suspense.

Bruce Springsteen’s 2025 Oscar Race Is Getting an Early Start with Academy Honor

Bruce Springsteen was “Born to Run” into the 2025 Oscars race.

Springsteen will be portrayed by Jeremy Allen White, with Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann, and David Krumholtz also starring in the ’80s-set feature.

‘The Chi’ Season 7 Soars To A 3-Day Audience Best & Another Series Streaming Record At Showtime
Image
Exclusive: Season 7 of The Chi is putting up a strong performance on Showtime.

Sunday night’s mid-season episode managed 1.78M cross-platform viewers in just three days, making it one of the top episodes of the season, per Showtime. The episode was up 23% versus the season-to-date average of 1.45M viewers after three days.

Additionally, the episodes is the most-streamed in series history, Showtime says. The network didn’t share specific streaming numbers.

The Chi has been on a growth trajectory the entire season, scoring series’ best audience numbers since Season 7 premiered. The Season 7 debut had 2M cross-platform viewers in seven days and, at the time, was the most-streamed episode to-date. So, it’s quite a feat for the mid-season episode to garner nearly that entire audience in less than half the time.

The series was already renewed for Season 8, which is a strong indicator that parent company Paramount Global is happy with this performance.

The Overlooked Anson Mount Western Series Star Trek Fans Need To Watch
Image
"Strange New Worlds" is not only the best "Star Trek" show in decades, but it's also a series with one of the greatest heads of hair on TV thanks to Anson Mount. Thus, fans of "Strange New Worlds" know the appeal of exploring new worlds, unusual locations, and different types of storytelling, even with a relatively small ensemble. So, before they dive into the show's latest season, fans of Anson Mount's gloriously and unjustly handsome Captain Pike should check out another show he did, one that also understands the appeal of vast landscapes,...

Good news about Silo seasons 3 and 4!
Image
The second season of Apple's post-apocalyptic drama Silo ended with a major revelation that will change the course of the story moving forward. No, it wasn't the reveal that the world outside the siloes was indeed unlivable, nor the reveal that one silo keeps watch over the others. It was the flashback sequence that showed us what things were like before the end of the world. We were introduced to a congressman and journalist meeting in Washington D.C, already planting the seeds of how the silos came to be.

Based on the popular book series by Hugh Howey, the first two seasons of Silo mainly followed a character named Juliette, who lives in an underground silo with many other people; they've been down there for generations and have forgotten how they've come to be there, but know that they can't leave for the surface.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Hilariously Reveals the Worst Terminator Movie (& It's Surprisingly Not Genisys)
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger has appeared in five of the six Terminator movies. With that in mind, Terminator fans shouldn't have any trouble figuring out which movie the actor considers to be the worst one in the franchise.

Schwarzenegger was recently on Watch What Happens Live! After Show to promote the second season of his hit Netflix series Fubar. While taking some viewer questions, the action star was asked to reveal which of the Terminator movies he thought was the worst. While 2015's Terminator Genisys is the worst-reviewed of the bunch, with a 26% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Schwarzenegger ended up choosing 2009's Terminator Salvation, solely because it was the only one to not feature the actor in a starring role.

"I would say the worst was probably the number four [Terminator Salvation] because that was done during the time I was governor [of California] and I was not in it," Schwarzenegger remarked. "Does that make sense?...

John Wick Studio Admitted They Were Wrong About 1 Controversial Death Scene
Image
In the decade-plus since the John Wick franchise launched, it's featured many memorable and polarizing moments that have boosted its staying power. One stunning scene from John Wick: Chapter 2 remains a talking point years later, and if it wasn't for director Chad Stahelski's intervention, it would never have made it into the critically acclaimed sequel.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski addressed a significant Chapter 2 sequence in which Wick helps Italian crime boss and High Table member Gianna D'Antonio (played by Claudia Gerini). Lionsgate executives pushed back against the scene where Wick looks to help D'Antonio die honorably. However, Stahelski revealed that it was the one time higher-ups owned that they were wrong about the franchise's creative direction.

"That happened once. On John Wick 2, there was disagreement with someone very high up in the studio over John Wick doing euthanasia-assist to a character called Gianna," he said.

How Documentary Filmmakers Found New Stuff to Say About Sly Stone, Springsteen and The Beatles
Image
It’s no surprise that this year’s Emmy nonfiction races are filled with films and series about iconic musicians, because music docs have been a main-stay at film festivals, in theaters and on television for decades. But the 2024-2025 season feels particularly robust, and particularly long on films about giants, from the Beatles to John Williams to Bruce Springsteen.

“I’m interested in story and conflict and characters and through lines in music,” said director David Tedeschi, who has worked with Martin Scorsese on documentaries about Bob Dylan, George Harrison, David Johansen and, this year, the Beatles. “And music is often a document of what artists were going through in the moment. So to tell those stories and to have the power of that music to go with it, it can be a very satisfying experience.”

This survey of a few of the most notable music films starts with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson,...

‘A lot comes with jumping into that inferno’: Questlove explores the burden of Black genius in ‘Sly Lives!’
Image
To follow up his Oscar-winning Summer of Soul, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson turned his focus on one of the landmark acts featured in that lauded documentary, Sly and the Family Stone.

The result, Hulu's Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), is now in the mix for an Emmy Award. “I like documentaries that make learning fun. Maybe I’m a natural-born griot,” he tells Gold Derby. “It just took five decades to get here.”

Questlove traces his passion for unearthing and sharing music history back to his early years on The Tonight Show as bandleader for the Roots. "On the first day of The Tonight Show, someone told Jimmy [Fallon] and I, ‘Everything that you ever know in your life is going to come out in this job,’” the artist recounts. This formative moment shaped his creative philosophy, one that prioritizes education through entertainment. “I’d rather educate you than entertain you,...

The official description of Season 7 states, “With Alicia (Lynn Whitfield) at the helm, the pivotal women of ‘The Chi’ rise to reclaim their power. Yet, as loyalties are tested and new rivalries are stoked, it becomes clear that there’s only one crown and it will come at a heavy cost.”

Along with Whitfield, the cast of the series includes Jacob Latimore, Yolonda Ross, Michael V. Epps, Shamon Brown Jr., Birgundi Baker, Luke James, and Wendy Raquel Robinson.

With the Season 8 renewal, “The Chi” is now one of the longest-running Showtime shows in the network’s history. It now ranks alongside shows like “Dexter,” “Homeland,” and “Weeds,” which all ran eight seasons at the premium cabler.

‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ Trailer: The Four Horsemen Return to Complete This Magician Heist Trilogy
Image
Who would have thought that the “Now You See Me” franchise would spur some of the biggest names in indie film? Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg and Sundance darling Dave Franco both return for third film “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” along with their fellow Four Horsemen magicians Woody Harrelson and Isla Fisher.

And there’s a new generation of indie stars joining the big Lionsgate franchise: Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt, who were also all in person to stage a visual “heist” in the heart of Times Square to promote the trailer. Lionsgate gave away $250,000 in digital payments to fans that texted or called a mysterious phone number that was on a billboard.

“Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” also stars Rosamund Pike and Morgan Freeman. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer with a script by Seth Grahame-Smith, Michael Lesslie, Paul Wernick, and Rhett Reese.
