The 10 Best Stephen King Book Endings, Ranked
Image
Most people who have read a book or two are well aware that Stephen King is the reigning ruler of the horror genre and a capable contender in several other areas of literature. Still, even his most ardent fans are likely quick to admit that King's endings have a reputation for disappointment. His longer works, in particular, tend to spend so much effort on world-building and intricate plot-weaving that the creative juice seems to run out when it's time to stick the landing.

As a result, King's stories can remind the reader of that meme where a hyperrealistic drawing of a horse gets progressively worse until the tail end is just a doodle. Consider, say, "Under the Dome" (2009), one of the author's patented "small town in a predicament" stories ... only, one that ends with the revelation that the whole nail-biting plot was caused by some alien kids goofing off.

Still,...

David Cronenberg's Brilliant Stephen King Movie Is Available To Watch For Free
Image
There are a lot of Stephen King books out there — and about as many movies based on those King-ly books. The writer earns his title as a horror master not just through craft, but prolificity. He's got multiple works that could contend for "scariest book ever written," but quite a few that aren't so great either.

If you're preparing for a King deep dive, with movies or TV, consider starting with the cream of the crop. One story that's absolutely in that cream is King's novel "The Dead Zone," which fellow horror master David Cronenberg adapted as a movie in 1983. For added convenience, "The Dead Zone" is now streaming for free (with ads) on Pluto TV.

Now, Cronenberg is synonymous with body horror, but "The Dead Zone" is no gross-out picture; the violence happens only in spats. What makes it Cronenbergian is that is about a man undergoing a physical...

Acting undercover as a man on the run, Reacher is tasked with locating a missing DEA informant while he works to uncover how his old foe Quinn is mixed up with Beck’s business.

As is the case with every season of Reacher, its cast of characters always changes. While a few characters have made various appearances here and there throughout the series, the show’s core characters each season are always different. Given Reacher prefers to travel from city to city with nothing but a toothbrush in his pocket, he always encounters a brand-new set of allies and enemies. Below is the cast of Season 3 and where viewers have seen them before.

12 Essential Sci-Fi Horror Movies, From ‘Frankenstein’ to ‘Possessor’
Image
When science-fiction and horror overlap, there is running and screaming, the towns people grab pitchforks and torches and the very idea of what it means to be human is called into question. At least, that’s what happens in some of the best movies that dip into both genres.

The age-old question of where the ethical line is in science and whether it should be crossed never ceases to generate new terrors as technology continues to develop. Killer cyborgs and androids? Out-of-control genetic mutation? Radiation-spawned monsters? All of these have have fueled some of our favorite sci-fi horror films.

If you’re new to this subgenre, here are some great movies to start with:

Boris Karloff in Frankenstein (Credit: Universal Pictures) Frankenstein (1931)

The original mad scientist’s experiment gone wrong, with a career-making — and wordless — performance from lead Boris Karloff as the monster. With this and the horror hit “Dracula,...

Why The Stephen King Series The Dead Zone Was Canceled
Image
Stephen King is arguably the most celebrated horror writer of all time. He's also an extremely prolific author whose work has been turned into countless movies and TV shows — many of which fail, but some of which are stunningly great. When you think of Stephen King, there are works that immediately jump to mind, like "The Shining," "Carrie," or maybe even "The Shawshank Redemption." Something like "The Dead Zone," on the other hand, tends to be overlooked, which is too bad. King's story centers on Johnny Smith, a man who gets into a car accident and wakes up from a coma five years later, now armed with the power to see into the future and past by touching people or items. Beyond that, though, the man's life is a mess; his one true love has moved on and started a family with someone else, and he keeps having visions of...

Michael Douglas and Glenn Close in Liaison fatale (1987)
10 Best 80s Thriller Movies: A Journey Into the Decade’s Greatest Hits
Michael Douglas and Glenn Close in Liaison fatale (1987)
Remember the 1980s? The decade of big hair, neon everything, and VHS tapes taking over the video shop. Aside from the flashy pop culture, this was also a great time for thrilling, edge-of-your-seat movies. The 1980s provided a wealth of classic 80s thrillers that redefined what it meant to feel suspenseful rather than just keeping viewers wondering. From dark crime dramas to mind-bending 1980s suspense movies that made your heart race, this era became the best place for directors who wanted to try new things and moviegoers who wanted to be shocked.

Why did the best 80s thriller movies come out at such a great time? The genre wasn’t just one thing but a wide range of movies. It had dark, twisty psychological thrillers that peeled back the layers of the mind (think Fatal Attraction), gritty crime sagas dripping with danger, and every once in a while, a heart-pounding story inspired by true events.

Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
The Dead Zone (2002-2007): What Happened to this TV Series?
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
We can all agree that Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of the 21st century. His books have influenced countless authors and set the foundation for modern horror media. King is the only writer whose books have given me a feeling of dread when I’m just on the second page. He has written hit after hit, and his life is just as fascinating as any story he has ever written. Over the years many people have asked Stephen King which one of his novels was favorite. He has always said that it was “The Dead Zone”, which shouldn’t really shouldn’t be a surprise. Even though he was a successful author before “The Dead Zone” was published, it was his first massive hit. The book put him on the map and set him down the road to become the legend we know today.

I have to agree,...

Stephen King's Best Non-Horror TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Stephen King wasnt crowned The King of Horror for no reason. Most of his books fall under the genre, and they are so good that TV show creators and movie directors keep mining content. Consequently, King has become one of the most adapted authors, second only to the great William Shakespeare in the all-time rankings. However, some of his best books arent necessarily horror. Think of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, which both morphed into some of the greatest movies.

The television landscape also has a few Stephen King productions that were adapted from the authors non-horror works. But no matter which genre they fall into, these shows still embody the suspense and tension that the author is known for. Most importantly, they have compelling stories, mostly because they dont tweak the author's vision too much.

So, whether you are a die-hard Stephen King fan or just a...

This Underrated 80s Horror Movie Is One of Stephen King's Best Adaptations
Image
The Dead Zone (1983) is a thrilling adaptation of Stephen King's novel, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith, a man who awakens with psychic powers after a car accident. The film is a masterful blend of horror, drama and suspense, with Walken delivering a standout performance as a reluctant psychic. Cronenberg's direction is taut and atmospheric, and despite taking some liberties with the source material, the film remains true to the tone and themes of King's novel.

Few writers in the world have had their material adapted more than horror icon Stephen King. Stephen King's beloved horror stories were adapted into films and TV almost immediately after he started publishing them, with the Brian De Palma Carrie movie coming out only two years after the novel (King's debut) came out in 1974. Since then, an utter barrage of King adaptations have come out, with few years...

The Power of Believing: Diving into Stephen King’s Fictional Tabloid ‘Inside View’
Image
Stephen King is an interesting follow on the site formerly known as Twitter. When not posting about politics or his latest literary find, he’s ranting about the state of the world and making observations that position him as a sort of elder statesman in the horror community. A recent tweet by the Master of Horror mentions a bygone era of salacious magazines that harkens back to his early career: “Hey, do you guys remember that supermarket tabloid that used to have stories about BatBoy? Man, I loved that shit.”

The world-famous author is likely referencing publications like The National Enquirer and similar periodicals that used to grab eyes in checkout lanes with claims of Elvis sightings and alien encounters. Frequently inspired by the world around him, King has his own literary brand of tabloid journalism with Inside View, a rag that has been appearing in his work for decades.

Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
American Psycho and The Dead Zone remakes in the works
Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
A few years ago, we heard that Lionsgate was developing TV shows based on American Psycho and the Saw franchise. Obviously those projects didn’t go anywhere, as Saw has since been revived with the film Saw X and now industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider is reporting that Lionsgate has decided to revive American Psycho not with a TV show, but with a remake. In the same report, Sneider reveals that It producer Roy Lee is also developing a new version of a different Stephen King story, The Dead Zone.

Based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the 2000 version of American Psycho was directed by Mary Harron, who also wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner. The film has the following synopsis: Patrick Bateman is a young, handsome, Harvard educated Wall Street success, seemingly perfect with his stunning fiancé and entourage of high-powered friends. But his circle of...

Lionsgate Reportedly Planning New Versions of ‘American Psycho’ and ‘The Dead Zone’
Image
Two genre properties are plotting returns from Lionsgate, Jeff Sneider (The Insneider) reports, with one of those projects being a fresh modern take on American Psycho.

“Lionsgate is plotting a new American Psycho movie and showing interest in a remake of The Dead Zone,” Sneider reported in last night’s edition of The Insneider newsletter.

American Psycho, the tale of murderous yuppie Patrick Bateman, began its life as a 1991 novel written by Bret Easton Ellis, which was turned into Mary Harron’s 2000 movie.

Christian Bale of course starred as Patrick Bateman in the hit movie, which still has fans debating a big question to this day: is Bateman really a murderer, or just a psychopath?

The film did spawn a direct-to-video “sequel” with American Psycho 2 in 2002, an initially unrelated story that was turned into an American Psycho sequel. Mila Kunis starred.

As for The Dead Zone, the story of a...

Christopher Walken's 10 Best Quotes In Movies
Image
With his recent turn in the hit series Severance, it is clear that Oscar-award-winning actor Christopher Walken has earned his reputation as a bona fide statesman of movies and TV. Known for his stilted speech pattern and odd performances, every line that Walken speaks onscreen is given an air of importance.

Whether he is saying something profound like in The Dead Zone or something silly like in Hairspray, the audience always listens whenever Christopher Walken has things to say. Though he has a wealth of memorable lines to his credit, only the very best have stuck with audiences forever.

"Every Once In A While, The Lion Has To Show The Jackals Who He Is" Mike, Poolhall Junkies (2002)

Though he isn't the most physically imposing figure, Walken's strong suit is playing odd-ball toughs who can use words like weapons. Poolhall Junkies was a relatively forgettable billiards movie that was made all...

Blu-ray Review: The Dead Zone Remains Devastating, Prophetic
Image
The Dead Zone. I've seen this 1983 film several times, and with each viewing, I love the film more. Scream Factory's recently released collector's edition of The Dead Zone is the definitive home "video" version (at least so far). Directed by David Cronenberg from the Stephen King book of the same name, this film was produced by hero Debra Hill. The film stars Christopher Walken as teacher Johnny Smith who's engaged to fellow teacher Sarah. Their happiness is shortlived. Straightaway, Johnny forgoes a night at Sarah's and drives home in the rain, where his car collides with an enormous truck. When he awakes, he discovers he's been in a coma for five...

James Stewart, Jeff Chandler, and Debra Paget in La flèche brisée (1950)
"They had the student / teacher relationship." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a highly anticipated documentary film titled Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali, from filmmaker Marcus A. Clarke. Inspired by the book "Blood Brothers" written by Randy Roberts & Johnny Smith, the film examines the relationship and connections between these two legendary, iconic African-Americans. From a chance meeting to a tragic fallout, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali's extraordinary bond cracks under the weight of distrust and shifting ideals. Through interviews with those closest to them — Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazz, Ali’s brother Rahman and daughters Maryum and Hana — and cultural luminaries such as Cornel West and Al Sharpton, the docu illuminates their meeting, bonding, and eventual falling out over discord within the leadership of the Nation of Islam. 10 Stephen King Films That Deserve Remakes
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
With the concluding chapter of Stephen King’s “It” remake floating into theaters this week – and with new versions of “Firestarter,” “Salem’s Lot,” and “The Stand” on the horizon – here are 10 terrifying King films that might benefit from a fresh adaptation.

The Dead Zone (1983)

It’s impossible to imagine another actor playing Johnny Smith, the clairvoyant coma survivor at the center of King’s creepy tale, with as much haunted intensity as Christopher Walken brought to David Cronenberg’s superb adaptation. That’s why a modern remake of “The Dead Zone” would be wise to expand the role of Greg Stillson, the unhinged political candidate portrayed by Martin Sheen the first time around. Luckily, King’s bestseller includes several frightening scenes with the deranged character that weren’t included in the original film. In today’s politically divisive climate, a Stillson-centered take on the material would help give a...

The Queen’s Corgi review – palace pooch in the doghouse
Jack Whitehall voices a disgraced doggie who ends up joining a canine fight club in this mirthless animated caper

These are indeed the misadventures of one of Her Majesty’s pluckier canine companions. Much of the action thus takes place in and around a functionally rendered Buckingham Palace, complete with photorealistic Liz and Phil in union-jack slippers. And yet this is not a homegrown animation. The credits reveal that most of the key personnel – headed by directors Vincent Kesteloot and Ben Stassen – are Belgian. Is there no one on this side of the North Sea who could digitise a few poop gags? Or would that leave the animators facing charges of treason?

Since Fly Me to the Moon (2008), Stassen’s Brussels-based nWave studio has generated cheap and cheerful product for harassed parents to make do with if the latest Pixar has sold out. The Queen’s Corgi script, by Gnomeo & Juliet...

‘The Queen’s Corgi’ Enjoys Banner Opening at French Box Office
“The Queen’s Corgi,” the 3D animated adventure tale directed by Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot, had a banner opening in France on Wednesday, scoring the country’s best first-day haul for an independent European animated film.

Written by Rob Sprackling and Johnny Smith, the pair behind “Gnomeo and Juliet,” “The Queen’s Corgi” grossed approximately €304,000 euros from 44,701 tickets on Wednesday in France. It’s this year’s fifth-highest opening day for a non-u.S. film so far in France, after “Serial (Bad) Weddings 2,” “Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” “City Hunter” and “Tanguy 2,” all of which are franchise-based pics.

Charades is representing the film in international markets. Apollo, the company launched by former Gaumont and Studiocanal exec Francois Clerc, is handling French distribution in association with TF1 Studio, and is giving the movie a wide release in France across 511 screens.

“The Queen’s Corgi” follows the adventures of Rex, the British monarch’s most beloved dog,...

Lionsgate U.K. Brings ‘The Queen’s Corgi’ Back Home (Exclusive)
Lionsgate U.K. has acquired “The Queen’s Corgi,” a 3D animated adventure tale written by Rob Sprackling and Johnny Smith, the pair behind “Gnomeo and Juliet.”

“The Queen’s Corgi,” which is budgeted in the $20 million range and was directed by European animation pioneer Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot (“Sammy 2”), has also sold to Eagle in Italy and TriPictures in Spain.

Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
How It Connects to Other Stephen King Stories
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Most Stephen King fans already know that the man has created a sprawling universe, with many of his most popular stories interconnected. He has his own shared universe, which is only now starting to be explored on the big screen. The latest adaptation of his work It hit theaters this weekend and is proving to be a blockbuster. It contains plenty of Easter eggs. Perhaps not as many as this past summer's Dark Tower movie, which featured it's own It shoutout. But you might be surprised how It connects to a lot of King's past novels.

Entertainment Weekly has a pretty comprehensive break down of all the Easter eggs and connections It contains to other Stephen King works of fiction. The book was originally released in 1986, and then turned into a two-part miniseries in the 90s. Characters and places from It have been known to pop up a lot in his work.

Why It's Super Creepy That The Dark Tower Made $19M on its Opening Weekend
The long-awaited Adaptation of Stephen King's Magnum Opus topped the weekend box office. The Dark Tower barely edged out Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk pulling in more than $19M dollars. That's great news for fans of the movie, but for true Stephen King fans that number 19 might raise a few eyebrows.

That's because the number 19 is important to The Dark Tower series, especially in the last three books. In the books Roland Deschain and his group start seeing the number everywhere: names that have 19 letters, numbers whose digits add up and total 19, and branches that spell out the numbers, etc.

These instances are pointed out on the Dark Tower Wiki:

Eddie Dean flys in Delta flight 910 to New York. 9 + 10 add up to 19.Alice is told to tell Nort nineteen to find out what is on the other side after death. When Jake Chambers visits Calvin Tower's bookstore, The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind,...

Graphic Sexual Content Unlikely To Appear In New Line’s It Adaptation
Stephen King is not known for handling sexual content with the utmost delicacy. Sure, there are exceptions – Tommy and Sue finally getting together in Carrie or Dead Zone, which carves out a delicate little moment for lead heroes Johnny Smith and Sarah.

With It though, it’s a totally different story. King’s horror classic has stood the test of time for its engrossing story of friendship, coming-of-age drama and shapeshifting entities from another dimension, as the Losers Club go up against an otherworldly, child-hunting demon named Pennywise. But in repackaging It for the big screen, New Line and director Andy Muschietti (Mama) seem to have nixed the novel’s somewhat controversial pre-teen sex scene – and that’s despite the recently confirmed R rating.

First reported by Screen Geek, it appears that while those scenes were present in early versions of Cary Fukunaga’s original script, most, if not all of It‘s sexual content has been left by the wayside. Disgusted parents voiced their disdain toward the original script on a casting forum for young actors, with one post stating that:

I don’t remember it being anything more than suggested in the original either. But it goes farther than that in this script. Much farther in a couple scenes, the father kissing her bare stomach, hands up her skirt to slip off panties, in addition, she describes being gang raped to another character. Add it all up and it’s just too much for us. We were so excited when we got it, but there was a pretty hefty email from agent to read the script and approve before agreeing due to content.

The original script purportedly went so far as to include a scene in which Henry Bowers raped a Hanlon sheep and “masturbated onto a birthday cake,” so it’s little wonder why New Line decided to tone things down during the film’s production. On that same casting forum, another parent was particularly critical of the proposition.

This is just gross. And I’m not talking about the content… I’m talking about directors/producers who want to hire underage actresses to make out with creepy old men.

It creeps into theatres on September 8th and will be the first in a two-part saga involving the Losers Club and their battle against Pennywise. Providing the box office numbers are to New Line’s liking, the second and conclusive chapter will be unleashed sometime in 2018.

The Fly Is Still David Cronenberg's Masterpiece
Don Kaye Aug 15, 2019

How Stephen King may have helped David Cronenberg make a masterpiece with The Fly.

The Fly arguably remains David Cronenberg’s masterpiece, over 30 years after its release. Loosely based on a 1957 short story by French writer George Langelaan, the movie transcends the story’s pulpy origins and the well-known images of a man with a fly’s head (and vice versa) from the 1958 film version starring Vincent Price to become a somber meditation on disease and aging and a tragic love story, not to mention one of the most effective horror/sci-fi films of its time. It also marked a summation and endpoint to the first phase of Cronenberg’s career, while investing his work with a new emotional maturity and thematic resonance.

Producer Kip Ohman first had the idea of remaking The Fly in the early 1980s, recruiting screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue to write the script.

15 Best Stephen King Movies
John Saavedra Nov 8, 2019

From campy to gruesome to terrifying, there's an adaptation for everyone. These are the best Stephen King movies.

This Stephen King article contains major spoilers.

Stephen King, the master of horror and one of America's most important writers, has enjoyed a very successful career, thanks to his prolific pen and the many adaptations his tales have inspired, whether it be in the movies or on TV. While for many fans, King means creepy novels like It or 'Salem's Lot and sprawling epics like The Dark Tower series and The Stand, others have flocked around the stuff based on his work. And for good reason: has any other modern writer inspired as many cinematic classics? King might even be the best-adapted writer in literary history. At least it's easy for a nerd to think so.

I had a tough time coming up with this list and ranking...

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! (Check out my interview with Jennifer Yuh Nelson for "Kung Fu Panda 2" right here)

The Annie Awards winners were announced yesterday at the UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

39th Annual Annie Award Nominee's Announced
I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

Jack Black in Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 picked up 12 nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards — announced today by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood — including Best Animated Feature and Best Director. DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots and Paramount’s Rango won nine nods, and Pixar’s Cars 2 earned seven. 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Leads the 2011 Annie Award Nominations
I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...
