Bob Costas Fears the Ease of Sports Gambling Will Lead to Addiction: ‘It’s Going to Ruin Some Lives, That’s Inevitable’ | Video
Image
Bob Costas issued a warning against legalized sports betting while speaking to “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday, emphasizing its impact on families.

“In the big picture, the house always wins,” he said, “[and] now you’ve got young guys with a phone in their hand, it’s right there. And some of those people are going to become addicted to it and it’s going to ruin some lives, that’s inevitable.”

Costas, who has been open about his father’s own sports gambling addiction in the past, also admitted to Welker he could not read gambling promos while calling games for the Major League Baseball Network.

“I just couldn’t in good conscience encourage people to do something which I know — for some of them it’s obviously just a little recreation and it’s fine, but there’s an insidious aspect to it that I didn...

“There Is No Future In Forgetting”: Watch Great Americans Medal Recipient Ava DuVernay’s Smithsonian Speech
Image
“Let us remind those who try to ‘restore’ a narrow, divisive past, that the future belongs to the whole of us,” said Great Americans Medal recipient Ava DuVernay to a Washington DC crowd this week upon receiving the honor from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Rebuking those who “fear…the full American story told in its dazzling complexity and devastating contradictions,” the Academy Award nominee also noted “history is not a weapon to be sheathed when inconvenient. It is not a bedtime story meant to lull us to sleep. It is a river, flowing… deep and often turbulent.”

Putting it very bluntly, DuVernay told the crowd: There is no future in forgetting.

While never directly mentioning Donald Trump by name in her May 8 remarks, DuVernay characteristically made her point extremely clear to anyone picking up what she was putting down about his ongoing Maga attacks on democracy,...

Meghan Markle’s Netflix TV Project ‘Pearl’ Hit With Infringement Accusation
Image
Nearly three years after Netflix put the brakes on an animated TV series from Meghan Markle, a British author says she and her lawyers sent letters to the duchess and her Archewell Productions company to point out possible infringement. Mel Elliott tells the Daily Mail she found “striking similarities” between the TV project, Pearl, and her own Pearl Power book series. Elliott’s Pearl Power picture books follow a little girl as she learns about equality. An animated TV show Elliott started working on in 2019 would have seen the character interacting with Billie Jean King, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earhart, Jane Goodall, Madonna, and other notable women from history. Then, in 2021, Netflix announced development of Pearl under the streamer’s multi-year deal with Markle and Prince Harry. Pearl would have been a series that follows a 12-year-old girl as she “learns to step into her power and finds inspiration from influential women throughout history,...

Why Billie Eilish Says She “Absolutely Hated” Her Name Growing Up
Image
Billie Eilish’s name may be iconic, but that doesn’t mean she loved it growing up.

The multi Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter was recently asked questions by several of her famous friends, including Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, Sza and Greta Gerwig, for British Vogue‘s May cover story. Among them was actor Idris Elba, who asked Eilish if she was ever “embarrassed” by her name and “who was the first namesake you ever came across and how did it make you feel?”

“I absolutely hated my name when I was a kid. ‘I thought Billie was a boy’s name.’ That’s all I ever heard every day of my life,” the “Birds of a Feather” artist admitted. “I remember just being so mad, and all I wanted was to have a girly name, like Violet or like Lavender, some sort of, you know, pretty flowery name.”

However, now...

Spider-Man Actresses Who Aced Tennis Roles In Surprising Films: Did You Notice The Pattern?
Image
Spider-Man Actresses Playing Tennis(Photo Credit –Facebook/Instagram)

Hollywood casting has a way of weaving together unexpected connections. But here’s a fun one—every actress who’s played Spider-Man’s love interest has ended up on a tennis court, at least on screen. Call it a coincidence or just a weird industry pattern, but Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Zendaya have all taken a swing at playing tennis players in films.

Kirsten Dunst was the foremost to stroll onto the tennis court. After playing Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, she starred in Wimbledon (2004). The actress played Lizzie Bradbury. She is a rising tennis star, who falls for a struggling pro (played by Paul Bettany). It wasn’t just a casual sports flick—Dunst actually trained to make her moves look legit.

In 2017, Emma Stone played tennis icon Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes.

Image
With antisemitism surging, Israeli influencer and author Hen Mazzig is launching a new online series “And They’re Jewish,” headlined by celebrities including Emmanuelle Chriqui, Debra Messing and Mayim Bialik.

The series, which will air weekly on Mazzig’s YouTube channel beginning April 2, was created in an effort to humanize Jewish people via the personal stories of high-profile participants who explore how they engage with their religion and heritage.

According to data released by the Anti-Defamation League, the number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. from October 2003 to September 2024 tripled over the same period a year prior. Mazzig, who co-founded the social media-focused Tel Aviv Institute and has become a go-to thought leader among Hollywood’s Jewish community, will debut the first-look teaser of the series at the Adl’s Never is Now Summit’s closing session, where Gal Gadot and trailblazing tennis champ Billie Jean King will be honored.

Sundance Filmmaker Cristina Costantini Blasts Off With Sally Ride Movie, And Director Violet Du Feng Explores China’s ‘Dating Game’ – Doc Talk Podcast
Image
Filmmaker Cristina Costantini is leaving the Sundance Film Festival with an award and with distribution already secured for her documentary Sally, about the late astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

Costantini won the 2025 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, an award selected by a jury of film and science professionals and “presented to an outstanding feature film focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer, or mathematician as a major character.”

Sally Ride, who earned a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford before joining NASA’s space shuttle program in the late 1970s, more than qualifies according to the Sloan Prize criteria. But the documentary constitutes much more than a recitation of Ride’s credentials. It’s also the story of her long relationship with romantic partner Tam O’Shaughnessy, a loving bond Ride kept secret until her death.

Costantini joins the latest...

‘Sally’ Review: Astronaut Sally Ride’s Life Partner Shares the Personal Saga of the Public Icon
Image
During one of the countless, often boneheaded interviews Sally Ride endured about her pioneering role in the United States space program, she schools a reporter on how to address her. “It’s Dr. Ride or Sally, but not Miss,” she says, flashing a smile that softened the lecture and much of director Cristina Costantini’s absorbing documentary the first American woman to go into space.

Throughout “Sally,” Costantini (“Science Fair”) leans into Ride’s face — the smile, the blue eyes, the moments of pensive regard — by closing in on archival images. Sometimes, she creates a palpable presence by linking footage with audio from interviews Ride gave during her lifetime.

In 1978, Ride was among the first women to enter NASA’s space program. Her groundbreaking compatriots were Judith Resnik, Anna Fisher, Shannon Lucid, Margaret Seddon and Kathryn Sullivan. Fisher and Sullivan appear here with stories that illuminate the era, but also...

‘Sally’ Review: A Refreshingly Clear-Eyed Documentary Weaves Together the Professional and Personal Lives of NASA Pioneer Sally Ride
Image
When Sally Ride died in 2012, she was praised as the first American woman in space, but there was much more to the story. Her obituaries let the world know a secret she had long held, that she and a woman named Tam O’Shaughnessy had been life partners for 27 years. Those same obituaries often ignored or minimized the jaw-dropping sexism Ride faced when she entered the first class of NASA astronauts to include women in 1978.

In the richly detailed Sally, Cristina Costantini reveals both personal and professional aspects of Ride’s life, showing how they were intertwined. With O’Shaughnessy as the central narrator, the documentary includes eye-opening interviews with family members and former astronauts and archival video of Ride herself, to create an engaging, socially relevant portrait of an American heroine and of the culture.

It also displays a refreshing and rare quality for a documentary with such access: Without for...

That legacy continues in the show’s 55th season, which launches on Max with Renee Rapp on Jan. 16 and follows with Sza, Noah Kahan, Michael B. I Wish The Masked Singer Would Have A Whole Season Of Non-Professional Singers
Image
The Masked Singer has featured some of the most iconic singers, including season 12's most recent winners Boyz II Men (Buffalos) and runner-up Mario (Wasp), but I wish the show would have a whole season of non-professional singers. The Masked Singer premiered in January 2019, with host Nick Cannon and panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger. During season 11, Rita Ora took Nicole's place on the panel while the latter star was busy with other commitments.

The Masked Singer has had twelve winners so far--T-Pain (Monster), Wayne Brady (Fox), Kandi Burruss (Night Angel), LeAnn Rimes (Sun), Nick Lachey (Piglet), Jewel (Queen of Hearts), Teyana Taylor (Firefly), Amber Riley (Harp), Bishop Briggs (Medusa), Ne-Yo (Cow), Vanessa Hudgens (Goldfish), and Boyz II Men (Buffalos)--and all of them are professional singers in some capacity. However, the show has featured many fantastic singers who aren't from the music industry, and...

Emma Stone has become an icon in the world of Hollywood, not only for her acting but also the kind of values that she preaches to her fans. The type of films that she stars in are exceptionally well picked, putting out messages of activism and advocating for change in the most beautiful ways possible.

With the most recent example being that of Poor Things, the actress has become the perfect role model for young women, being successful but at the same time not being complaisant to a bigger issue.

One of the most perfect examples of her impact has to be her 2017 Battle of the Sexes with Steve Carell.

New ‘Jeopardy!’ Category ‘Hard To Watch’ As Players Struggle
Image
This week on Jeopardy!, there was a new category that had the players struggling at times. However, while the players weren’t sure of many of the answers, it had many viewers at home “cringing” at the struggle. Many others said it was “hard to watch” as the players seemed clueless about the category.

Here is what the clues pertained to and how many of the questions they actually got right.

Jeopardy! Players Struggle To Name Female Athletes

The Jeopardy! game on Wednesday saw the players end up stumped when the category came to “Great Women In Sports.” While sports is not always a category that players do well at, they seemed especially stumped when it came to naming great female athletes.

The questions saw one of the greatest of all time asking the questions. Billie Jean King was on video asking the questions. King is one...

Almost There: Emma Stone in "Battle of the Sexes"
Image
by Cláudio Alves

Our most recent two-time Best Actress champion is back in theaters with Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, a black-hearted tryptic that allows Emma Stone to experiment with three distinctly realized characters. To mark the occasion and the success of another tennis-related movie – Guadagnino's Challengers – let's think back to one of the few times this Academy favorite was in the race but didn't land a nomination. In 2017, right after her first Oscar win, Stone played Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the biopic was made in parallel with a Presidential election that saw a very different outcome than its titular match. Looking back, Battle of the Sexes reached for the zeitgeist yet failed to predict where the world was headed.

As for Stone, the project signaled her most outward flirtation with traditional prestige before her career went into another direction altogether…...

Sarah Sherman (‘Saturday Night Live’) on her ‘busiest season’ yet: ‘I’m just a little speck on this great comedy icon’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Sarah Sherman recently completed her third season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” and as she looks back at Season 49 as a whole, she now declares, “It was a lot! It was really fun. It was the busiest season I’ve ever had. I finally got to do a season where it’s like, ‘You have to change your wig a million times an episode, and you have a bunch of quick changes.'” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

After Season 49 of “SNL” wrapped up on May 18, Sherman remembers thinking, “Why am I so much more tired at the end of this season than I have been at the end of every other season? It’s because, oh, I had to get an owl beak ripped off my face, got all the glue cleaned up and got turned into a human woman in like 30 seconds,” she chuckles before adding,...

Best Steve Carell Movies and TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Some actors are good at one particular type of character, whilst others can turn their hand to any genre, any role and any medium of screen work. Steve Carell's ability fits the latter, as he has provided fans with such an impressive collection of projects. His break-through roles came in 2005 with The Office, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which enabled him to make his mark on acting.

There's nothing that suggests Carell couldn't take on any kind of character. He's embodied roles that can make audiences cry with laughter, and others that can make them cry with sadness. There isn't one part that he's undertaken which can be pointed out as halfhearted. Instead, Carell seemingly throws himself into his work, making even his fictional characters appear to be real-life. Fans have recently been treated to another film starring Carell, as he plays Blue in John Krasinski's star-studded movie, If.

‘Nasty’ Review: Ilie Năstase Pop Doc Is An Ace, But How Halcyon Were Those Days? – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Game, set and match for Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, who co-direct Nasty, a pleasingly hagiographic portrait of Romanian tennis icon Ilie Năstase. What fun tennis must have been in the 1970s, as it was on the turn from a knockabout sport into the sharp-footed profession it is today. Năstase and his contemporaries brought finesse and genius to the game, but tennis hadn’t yet been fully corrupted by corporate greed and mechanical elite athleticism. These players were hardworking and hard-partying in equal measure, and Năstase was a key ringleader for the frivolity, dating models, and canoodling on the mattresses at Studio 54.

He was also the sport’s chief antagonist a generation before John McEnroe took the mantle. Arguing with his fellow players and with the umpires. But he never questioned them when their calls were right, he insists, in one of the rare modern interview clips with Năstase himself.
