‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled After Season 2, Queen Elizabeth Spinoff in the Works at Starz
Image
“The Serpent Queen” has been canceled after Season 2 at Starz.

A spinoff series focused on Queen Elizabeth The First is currently in development at the network as it looks to continue its partnership with “The Serpent Queen” executive producers Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe.

The 1500s-set series starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France, as she navigates political challenges as a teenager in order to seize control and rule the country for 30 years.

While no casting for the Queen Elizabeth spinoff has been revealed, Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Monarch in Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen.”

Based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” also starred Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma, Enzo Cilenti, Sennia Nanua and Kiruna Stamell. The series used fourth-wall breaks and contemporary music to modernize the Renaissance-era story. The second season of the show,...

‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled; Starz In Talks For Queen Elizabeth I Spinoff Starring Minnie Driver
Image
Exclusive: Starz is not proceeding with a third season of The Serpent Queen, starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. But it’s not all bad news for the cast of the historic drama series: I hear their options had been picked up so the actors will be paid for the unproduced Season 3 episodes.

There is also good news for the loyal fans of The Serpent Queen — a spinoff centering on Queen Elizabeth The First is in the works from the same creative team of writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and executive producer Erwin Stoff, sources said. No talent is currently attached, but Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Queen in Season 2 of Serpent Queen and is expected to reprise her role, I hear.

The cancellation decision comes a little over a month after Season 2 of The Serpent Queen ended its run on Starz. Both seasons have been well received,...

Image
The animated series The Legend of Vox Machina highlights the adventures of the Vox Machina team in their fantasy world. While the animated show's voice cast excels in their roles, other actors could offer a new spin on the characters in a live-action version. The casting suggestions for a live-action adaptation include Tom Hiddleston, Keira Knightley, Jason Momoa, Kiruna Stamell, Peter Dinklage, Tom Ellis, Karen Gillan, Winston Duke, Rebecca Ferguson, and Joe Manganiello.

Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina is a powerhouse series due to the creative efforts of the original cast, but other actors could take over the roles for live-action. Starting as an online Dungeons & Dragons campaign on Twitch and YouTube in 2015, the Critical Role web series led to the animated adaptation that carried the characters into the world of streaming. With the original cast as well as a few new picks, the adventures of this party...

‘The Serpent Queen’ Creator Already Has Season 2 Planned Out
Image
Justin Haythe, creator of Starz’s latest period drama, “The Serpent Queen,” understands the absurdity of the Medici era. For him, this is a landscape where the simplest cut could outright kill a person and an argument could easily transition into people throwing furniture at each other. “I had not set out to do a royal show or a period show. That’s a very established genre and you have to satisfy this genre, which, hopefully, we have. But I didn’t have an idea how to reinvent it,” Haythe told IndieWire via Zoom.

For Haythe, that reinvention came from opening up the world of French leader Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton) to characters that have been commonly written out of history. “Anything is fair game if the character is right. All those people exist in history, the kings and the queens. The people who serve them, the people who brought them their horses,...

Image
Samantha Morton as Catherine De Medici in Starz’s ‘The Serpent Queen’

Starz’s The Serpent Queen starring two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici has been renewed for a second season. The official renewal was announced as season one of the popular drama is set to wrap up on October 30, 2022.

“The Serpent Queen is distinctly modern, darkly comedic, and completely unexpected,” stated Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming, Starz. “Catherine De Medici’s story is the perfect complement to our female-forward slate, and Samantha Morton’s brilliant portrayal of this ruthless, charming and savvy queen anchors the whole production. We’re thrilled to unveil more of her incredible life and reign in season two, which promises to be even more provocative and sublime.”

The first season also features Liv Hill, Charles Dance, Ludivine Sagnier, Colm Meaney, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma, Alex Heath, and Amrita Acharia. Enzo Cilenti, Antonia Clarke,...

‘The Serpent Queen’ Nabs Early Season 2 Renewal at Starz
Samantha Morton in The Serpent Queen (2022)
“The Serpent Queen” is not slithering away from our screens anytime soon: The Starz period drama about the ruthless Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton) has nabbed an early Season 2 renewal for eight episodes ahead of its Season 1 finale, which will air Oct. 30.

The critically acclaimed series currently holds a 100 critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to an 87 audience score. Starring two-time Oscar nominee Morton, “The Serpent Queen” is billed as a historical drama with edge, presenting a modernized tale of de Medici who against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. The story begins with a 14-year-old, orphaned Catherine who marries into the 16th-century French court and must quickly learn the ropes of loyalty and trust, all while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.

The Serpent Queen: Liv Hill on Catherine's Shocking Decision
Image
From writer and executive producer Justin Haythe and director and executive producer Stacie Passon (based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda), Starz's latest period drama The Serpent Queen tells the story of one of history's most complex and complicated figures, Catherine de Medici, who ascends in power and status to become one of France's longest-serving rulers. As an orphan, Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the French court at a young age, but quickly learns that she must counter — and in some instances, outmaneuver — her political opponents, many of whom would rather see her dead than on the throne. What makes the series even more intriguing is that it's Catherine herself (Samantha Morton) telling her own story, in her own words, to her newest maid and confidant Rahima (Sennia Nanua). The upcoming series also stars Colm Meaney, Ludivine Sagnier, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma,...

‘The Serpent Queen,’ Starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici, Doesn’t Need Its ‘Twists’ to Work: TV Review
Image
If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.

However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...

Trailer Revealed For Starz Historical Drama ‘The Serpent Queen’ Starring Samantha Morton
Image
Starz has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming historical drama “The Serpent Queen” starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. The wicked new drama series will premiere on Sunday, September 11th.

A historical drama with an edge, “The Serpent Queen” puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici’s (Morton) rise to power. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement, has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. 'I told off the first boy who kissed me'
Born with a rare form of dwarfism, Kiruna Stammell spent her childhood believing there were rules forbidding boys to even kiss her. So when she met Gareth Berliner, she didn't imagine that he'd turn out to be the love of her life

Kiruna Stamell vividly recalls her first date with Gareth Berliner. After meeting at a comedy club a few weeks earlier, they had arranged to go out for drinks. She was nervous, wondering how she looked and if he liked her as much as she liked him. As they got out of the taxi at the bar, her heart sank. Across the street, someone was pointing at her and shouting; "Grow up!

Born with a rare form of dwarfism called acromeseomerlic dysplasia, Kiruna, 30, has been subjected to taunts for much of her life. She has been filmed by strangers (she now films them back), laughed at by customer service representatives and offered insulting jobs.
