‘Evita’ Theater Review: Rachel Zegler Takes London by Storm as Eva Perón in Otherwise Uneven Revival
Image
Could it be time for Jamie Lloyd to hit the pause button? The prolific director, whose radically reimagined Sunset Blvd. last month won Tony Awards for best musical revival and lead actress Nicole Scherzinger, is rolling out productions at such a rate that his template — big stars, event theater, a style that might be described as minimalist swagger — is beginning to look entrenched, and a bit hit-or-miss.

Spectacle worked wonders with his recent, disco-dancing Much Ado About Nothing starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell. But while there was a glorious opportunity for a revisionist take on Evita — to reconfigure the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice mega-musical from the 1970s for a more politically confused and troubled age — Lloyd has simply turned up the volume.

The result feels decidedly erratic. The central performance from Rachel Zegler at times gives you goosebumps, but at others is in desperate need of direction...

The concept for Building the Band loosely follows the same formula as Netflix’s Love Is Blind, only this time with a musical element: Musicians blindly choose band members from individual booths, basing their decisions solely on someone’s vocal chops without being able to see the person performing.

‘Oh, Mary!’ Breaks House Record As Cole Escola’s Starring Run Nears End; Overall Receipts Drop As Hollywood Goes Home – Broadway Box Office
Image
With the star-driven megahits Good Night, And Good Luck (George Clooney) and Othello having exited the stage, Broadway saw a drop of nearly 15% at the box office last week.

The 38 shows on the boards grossed a total $39,204,872, down from about $46M from the previous week. Total attendance last week – the week ending June 15 – was 313,343, down about 5% from the previous week but up about 8% compared to last year at this time.

Perhaps most interesting were the fortunes of shows basking in the Tony glow, or not. Oh, Mary! – which did not win Best Play, contrary to many predictions from the so-called experts – saw the show written by and starring Cole Escola broke yet another house record at the Lyceum, grossing $1,354,841. That’s the show’s best number since the Christmas holidays,...

Sunset Blvd’s average ticket price also increased to $138 from $110 the week before and capacity increased to 92 percent from 89 percent.

Purpose, which took home the Tony Award for best play and one for featured actress Kara Young, also saw a $100,000 boost in grosses, hitting $636,381 last week, which is the highest gross of its run yet. The play opened March 17 at the Hayes Theater and has had a high capacity throughout its run.

Netflix Confirmed That Building The Band Will Have 10 Episodes(Photo Credit –Netflix)

Netflix is bringing a fresh new reality show called Building The Band this July. The show focuses on music, connection, and the power of raw talent. It is a musical competition where singers come together to form a band. The twist is that they do not see each other until the band is already made. Everything depends on the sound and voice alone.

Building The Band is extra special because it features Liam Payne in his final on-screen appearance. The singer passed away in October 2024. His segments were filmed earlier and are included in the show with the full support of his family. Fans will get to see him on screen one last time as a guest judge.

Format and Streaming Schedule

Netflix has confirmed that Building The Band will have ten episodes. The series will be released over three weeks.

Image
Some cracks cut deep. They don’t let in light; they let in silence. That’s what Morten Harket, the ethereal voice behind A-ha’s iconic ballads, is staring down. A voice once strong enough to pull a falsetto from the sky now trembles at the mercy of Parkinson’s disease. At 65, the Norwegian singer is not clinging to fame or nostalgia. Instead, he is bravely peeling back the curtain on a deeply personal battle, admitting he might never sing again.

After two complex brain surgeries, shifting medications, and a daily wrestle with his own body, the man who made Take On Me eternal is confessing something heavier. The answer is as uncertain as the path ahead. And yet, Harket isn’t asking for pity. He’s asking us to listen….to the silence, the courage, the truth.

Who is Morten Harket: The voice of A-ha faces Parkinson’s disease...

‘Materialists’ Could Be Headed for a Swoon-Worthy Box Office Debut
Image
Celine Song’s romantic dramedy “Materialists” opens from A24 in what we hear are about 2,800 theaters in the U.S. this weekend — majorly more screens than Song’s debut “Past Lives,” which opened two years ago in four theaters. Strong social sentiment and positive reviews initially set the stage for a possible $7 million opening, but A24 could be looking at another fast-rising hit on its hands if the movie opens above $10 million, which is entirely possible.

On this week’s episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dish on what needs to happen for “Materialists” to sustain potential early success — especially as Dakota Johnson, with co-stars Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal at her side, delivers another viral press tour with candid thoughts on “Materialists,” plus “Madame Web” and Hollywood’s drive for repetition and remakes.

Elsewhere on the podcast, we make some early Emmy...

All four of the aforementioned names, of course, come with plenty of expertise to share about being in bands — Payne was famously part of 1D after being put together on “The X Factor,...

Image
Good Night, and Good Luck ended its Broadway run on a high, bringing in $4.3 million last week and yet again breaking its own record for highest-grossing play on Broadway.

The record gross came as the play, starring George Clooney, also broadcast its June 7 performance live on CNN, making the show available to all viewers. The production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre April 3 and ended its run June 8, the day of the Tony Awards. The play had five Tony nominations, including one for Clooney, but walked away without any trophies.
