Rick Buckler Dies: The Jam’s Drummer Was 69
Image
Rick Buckler, founding drummer for popular and influential British rock trio The Jam, died February 17 after a short illness, his management company said in a statement. He was 69.

“Rick Buckler, best known as the legendary drummer of The Jam, passed away peacefully on Monday evening in Woking, after a short illness with family by his side,” the statement reads. “Rick was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a devoted friend to many, who will be greatly missed.”

Buckler joined up with frontman singer-guitarist Paul Weller and bassist Bruce Foxton to form The Jam in 1972 and remained with the group until its 1982 breakup. Recording from 1977-82, it was among the era’s most popular bands in the UK, where The Jam racked up 18 consecutive Top 40 singles, nine Top 10s and four No. 1s: 1980’s “Going Underground” and “Start,” followed by “Town Called Malice” — which debuted atop the chart — and...

Rick Buckler, the Jam Drummer, Dead at 69
Image
Rick Buckler, drummer for British rock band the Jam, has died at the age of 69.

Buckler’s former bandmate and lead singer Paul Weller confirmed his death on social media Tuesday. “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking,” wrote Weller. “To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams and what we made stands the test of time.

Rick Buckler, drummer for legendary UK rock band The Jam, has died at the age of 69. A statement from his family states that Buckler “passed away peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness with family by his side.”

The Jam’s Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton both paid tribute to their late bandmate, with Weller stating, “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams and what we made stands the test of time. My deepest sympathy to all family and friends.”

Foxton added, “I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative...

The Jam About The Young Idea review: Surrender to a fine rock documentary
Paul Weller
"Don't have to explain myself to you / I don't give two f**ks about your review" said Paul Weller with The Jam on 'The Modern World' back in 1977, so I don't think he'll be all that bothered by what I say about his band or this documentary.

He doesn't have to worry either way. Screened in the city ahead of its broadcast on Sky Arts next week, The Jam: About The Young Idea is a fine documentary that can reel in movie fans who hadn't necessarily surrendered to the beat of Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler before.

Riding on the back of a new photo exhibition of the band, the film is directed with economy and style by Bob Smeaton, one of the men behind the remarkable Beatles Anthology series from the mid-1990s.

About The Young Idea mixes up archive live footage, new conversations with the band and...

Hurts – Live at O2 Academy Brixton Review – 4 November 2011
On arriving at a party on New Year’s Eve 2010, it rapidly became apparent that I had been the only person not to receive the ‘fancy dress’ memo. I felt like the kid in school uniform on non-uniform day. None too pleasant. That was until my friend Jack handed me a lifeline – “Have you come as the lead singer of Hurts?”- my immediate response being “who?” – but a few taps on the iPhone, and lo, Google could declare that yes, I had, somewhat inadvertently, arrived as Theo Hutchcraft. Ignorance Is bliss.

So having used this well dressed fellow’s name to blag my way through what could have been an otherwise awkward evening, I felt obliged to download their debut album (legally) and give them a listen. And I am not ashamed to say, step aside Neil Tennant, Theo is my new electro-pop hero. Yes the album’s glossy.

Dog Ears Music: Volume 125
Paul Weller
The Jam Influential British mod-punk pack The Jam was founded in Surrey in the early '70s by Paul Weller (guitar), Bruce Foxton (bass), and Rick Buckler (drums). Guitarist Steve Brookes was in its freshman lineup. In 1977, the rising tide of punk buoyed Weller & Co. to U.K. pop stardom, leading to six full lengths and more than a dozen top-charting singles for The Jam. In '83, Weller moved on to The Style Council and then went solo for good in '89. Foxton joined Still Little Fingers from 1990 till the mid-aughts and continues to collaborate with Buckler. Music: Review: Paul Weller: Wake Up The Nation
As a solo artist, Paul Weller has rarely gotten enough credit—at least in America—for the diversity and creativity of his output. Weller’s gotten wilder as he’s gotten older, taking more of an experimental approach than he ever did with mod-punk legends The Jam or slick soulsters The Style Council. Weller’s latest, Wake Up The Nation, is full of short songs suffused with a jittery vibe, and many of its 16 tracks sound like three or four songs crammed together. The record features Jam bassist Bruce Foxton on two tracks, and collaborations with My Bloody Valentine ...
