Lucía Álvarez Vázquez was born on November 28, 1948 in the city of México. She studied piano and composition at the National School of Music, from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Álvarez has worked extensively on films, the stage and television, but she is also the composer of more than 100 concert works, including duets and quartets for strings, chamber music, and the symphonic poem "Moctezuma", with lyrics by Homero Aridjis. In 1994 she traveled to Siena, Italy, where she studied film composition with Ennio Morricone. Although Lucía Álvarez has worked with many Mexican filmmakers, her work is mostly associated with the films of Arturo Ripstein and Ignacio Ortiz.
