Film News: Oscar Winner & Stage Actor Olympia Dukakis Dies at 89
Image
Chicago – I will never forget meeting Olympia Dukakis. It was in Chicago in 2009, and among all the pomp and sequins of a Greek American awards night. it was Dukakis who was, by her natural presence, the movie star. Oh yeah, and she was slightly tipsy. Ms. Dukakis passed away in New York City on May 1st, 2021, age 89.

She was known for her high level of performance on stage and screen, and resided in both for over 60 years. She also was a prominent acting instructor, a political activist (her cousin was 1988 Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis) and wrote her memoir in 2003 entitled “Ask Me Again Tomorrow: A Life in Progress.”

Composer Paul Cantelon Leans on Greek Music Knowledge to Score Olympia Dukakis Doc
Image
When Paul Cantelon was tapped by first-time feature director Harry Mavromichalis to score “Olympia,” the documentary on Academy Award-winning actress, Olympia Dukakis, he was more than prepared to craft music that underscored her Greek heritage.

When Cantelon’s preacher father met his first-chair trumpeter mother, their family life becomes one of traveling evangelical tent meetings with Cantelon growing up on couches in different people’s homes. A number of these homes belonged to Greek families where he heard Greek music that became part of his musical lexicon. Over 30 years ago, when Cantelon met his wife, vocalist Angela McCluskey, she had a great love for Greece and took him to that country, where Cantelon was immersed in the music.

“[Mavromichalis] has a lyrical sense for picture,” says Cantelon from his Nichols Canyon home studio in Los Angeles. “He was a dancer and he has a musical, rhythmic sense to the way he shoots and edits.

‘Olympia’: Film Review
Image
Less interesting subjects than Olympia Dukakis have been profiled in more compelling documentaries than Harry Mavromichalis’ “Olympia,” a fervently admiring but scattered and sometimes scatty portrait of a woman who is anything but. Although peppered with tantalizingly salty-mouthed anecdotes and wry observations on aging, sexuality, outsider status and the art of performance, the film is hampered by its overly fannish tone, too dazzled by the self-described “octogenarian motherf—er” to be able to meet her own forthright, iconoclastic, penetrating gaze without looking quickly away again.

A striking, blue-tinged extreme-shallow-focus closeup on Dukakis’ fantastic face, that brings out both the age lines and the luminosity of her skin, teases a much more intimate and impressionistic approach than is taken. Soon John Ryan Johnson and Federico Cesca’s photography settles into a more familiar and anonymous handheld vérité style, as we follow Dukakis from home to hotel room to car, from the...

Olympia Dukakis hints at screen return for Armistead Maupin's Anna Madrigal
Forthcoming novel from San Francisco author, centered on iconic Tales of the City character, could be made into a film

The venerable stage and screen actress Olympia Dukakis is poised to reprise what is perhaps the most iconic role of her career – and certainly one that had a huge impact on her outlook on life.

No, not her 1987 part as Cher's mother, in some sort of sequel to the hit movie Moonstruck, which won her an Oscar. Dukakis is in talks with the author Armistead Maupin about embodying once more – after a long hiatus – the character Anna Madrigal, the transgender landlady of a fictional house in San Francisco, where the legendary writer set his Tales of the City novels.

"I'd be there in a minute," Dukakis told the Guardian of the prospect of playing the iconic character again.

January 2014 sees the publication of The Days of Anna Madrigal, Maupin's...

Detachment Blu-ray Review
It’s weird seeing a follow-up from a director who has made such a classic film yet nothing since. It’s even more weird that the film, American History X, isn’t something he’s proud of and tried to change his name to Humpty Dumpty on it. Odd, still, that Detachment, the new film from Tony Kaye, went pretty much unnoticed after festivals and went, instead, released to On Demand services and disappointing considering the talent within the film alone and the fact that it is, quite frankly, pretty brilliant. A film so packed with acting talent, melodramatic story, great music and hit-and-miss direction means that you have something of a separation with the audiences.

Adrien Brody’s Henry is a substitute teacher who travels from school to school filling the blank wherever needed for a month or so. When he goes to a pretty deplorable school that has...

The Beauty & Humor of Decay
Ivanov Classic Stage Company, NYC

If you are unfamiliar with Anton Chekhov's seldom-produced Russian twist on Hamlet, Classic Stage Company is offering a stunning opportunity to cover that gaping hole with one of their best works in recent years. The play Ivanov is a stellar piece of theater, and this production gives full rein to its high humor and devastating tragedy as it rides a very intense three hours of poetic drama.

2012 has turned out to be an inspired year for plays, and Ivanov will only make it that much more difficult for voters from the Obies & Lortels to pick the appropriate winners, as the cast, design crew, and director from this melancholy celebration of life all present very worthy contenders.

It's Ethan Hawke's face that is on all the ads, and his name that will likely draw many audience members; while this is an ensemble production, Hawke is deserving of the attention.

Review: Tony Kaye's Detachment Paints a Grim Picture of Public Education
Detachment 2012 100 minutes Rated R Opens in limited release on March 16th Most of the ideas in Tony Kaye's Detachment are not revolutionary, especially not to anyone who has followed the last thirty years of debate regarding the public education system in America (Jonathan Kozel's many works of nonfiction come to mind).  And while the story is told in a style that sometimes veers to art-house cliche (sepia-toned flashbacks, first-person testimonial to an unseen listener, hand-held claustrophobia, etc.), the picture is in the end devastating via its almost objective presentation of the issues at hand.  Sure, Kaye is saying, we know that public schools are underfunded, understaffed and stuck with various federal mandates and (worst of all, argues Kaye) a deluge of unmotivated students whose parents only take an interest when it comes to rebutting disciplinary measures. But told through the eyes of a substitute teacher who is far more...

“Detachment” paints a grim picture of public education

A Bird Of The Air Trailer And Preview
Coming your way in limited release on September 23rd, A Bird of the Air is a quirky, indie number that looks as charming as anything to come along in a while. Centered around a loner who finds a parrot, and embarks on a mission to return the bird to its rightful owner, it's a kind of quest film that spins out of control.

If the trailer is any real indication, my money is on this one coming together into a very solid effort, and one that I think many will find themselves watching again and again.

Below check out some more info, the trailer, and a few images, and find out if this one will make appearance near you.

A sassy parrot and a free-spirited librarian upend the well-ordered life of a solitary man.

Lyman (Jackson Hurst) is a loner, working the graveyard shift for the Courtesy Patrol. When a...

Adrien Brody and Christina Hendricks in Detachment (2011)
Tribeca 2011: "Detachment," Reviewed
Adrien Brody and Christina Hendricks in Detachment (2011)
Tony Kaye didn't disappoint. In front of a packed house at the Bmcc Performing Arts Center during the Tribeca Film Festival, the British director that once wanted his name replaced with "Humpty Dumpty" on "American History X" came out onstage with the greying beard of a hermit, the glasses of Sigmund Freud, a black guitar and a Whole Foods shopping bag to mumble an introduction of his film "Detachment" before breaking out into a full-blown song that ended with the audience chanting, "I don't care." (A sample lyric: "Brainwash my confidence away...begging for peace of mind may seem selfish and unfair...I don't care.) Adrien Brody was there, too, saying some heartfelt words about how his father was a public school teacher, but all eyes were on Kaye, who implored the audience to look for the color red in the film by placing a piece of paper drenched in...

Hump Day Hotness: Marital Bliss
Have you seen Vanity Fair's list of Hollywood's rarest unions: the longterm actor/actress marriage? I don't need to tell you that most Tinseltown marriages end in divorce. Yet some couple stick by each other and anyone in a long term relationship or marriage will know what a feat that often is. The immortal Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the longest lasting dual movie star marriage -- they were married for 50 years before Newman's death (2008, Rip). But the lengthiest dual actor marriages ever? The Reagans with 52 years and, up at the tippity top, recent Oscar nominee Ruby Dee (American Gangster) and Ossie Davis (2005, Rip) with 56 years of happily ever after.

I'm sure you've heard the famous Newman paraphrase about fidelity Why fool around with hamburger when you have steak at home? but what I loved most about their celebrated marriage was that they weren't overly sentimental about it in interviews,...
