He and his wife, Susan, have two adopted Korean daughters.

Several years before his death, he had begun writing a book about his journey and struggles with ALS entitled Not That Man Anymore. It was completed by his widow, author Susan Hufford, and released in September 2005 with 25 percent of all proceeds going to ALS research.

His funeral arrangements was handled by Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York City. He was cremated and ashes are with family.
