In honor of this special day, we’ve curated 10 films (and one limited series!) that embody the values and spirit of the service members across all five branches: the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy.

Patton (1970)

Branch: U.S. Army

Director: Franklin J. Schaffner

Cast: George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Young, Michael Strong, Carey Loftin

Vinegar Syndrome 10th Anniversary – 10 Hidden Gems You Need to Watch!
Image
Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.

Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.

In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.

To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

Damar Hamlin: The NFL, Celebs And More Offer Support Amid Hospitalization
Image
Athletes, celebrities and sports fans alike have come together to offer support and prayers for Damar Hamlin after the Buffalo Bills’ safety collapsed during Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals.

During the first quarter of Monday’s matchup, Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, and both men appeared to be uninjured following the tackle. However, shortly after, Hamlin appeared to stumble and collapse on the field. He was swiftly attended to by medical personnel, who reportedly gave the athlete CPR on the field before he was taken to the hospital via ambulance.

On Tuesday morning, the NFL released a statement confirming that Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest following a blow to the chest and is currently in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Hamlin’s spokesperson, Jordon Rooney, told Et that the athlete is fighting.

“We don’t have a specific medical update at this time.

Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson Beat Up Cyber Criminals in New Amazon PSA (TV News Roundup)
Image
Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson have teamed up once again — this time to throw cyber criminals against walls.

The two stars appear in a new cybersecurity awareness PSA from Amazon as a part of the company’s protect and connect program, which aims to teach Internet users how to protect themselves from phishing and other cybersecurity threats.

The PSA features Jordan and Thompson saving unsuspecting internet users from sketchy internet schemes. The PSA comes as a follow up on Amazon’s commitments at the White House Cybersecurity Summit in 2021.

“Being part of this PSA was an opportunity to work with Tessa again, one of my mentors — Paul Hunter, and to support the Amazon family to get this message out that cyber security and your privacy is really important,” Jordan said. “Nobody wants their information stolen. As much as you can protect your information, and your family and friends, you should do that.

The Silent Partner
The absolute best small scale ‘perfect crime’ thriller has nail-biting suspense, humor, sexy scenes, a shocking violent scene and apparently a terrific collaboration between director Daryl Duke and writer Curtis Hanson. Elliott Gould and Christopher Plummer give unique, superb performances, and Susannah York is enticing as well. It’s not neo-noir, it’s better than neo-noir. With a very early John Candy performance, too.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Deadline (1984)
The relationship between art and audience has always been in a state of flux, a constantly morphing organism impossible to navigate with a standard moral compass; who among us hasn’t cast a glance at a filmmaker and wondered if their fantasies bleed into reality? Well, us horror fans usually don’t; we know our creators tend to be the more stable examples of the species, a topic that the fascinating and contemplative Deadline (1984) decides to turn on its head by pointing a few fingers back at us.

The “us” being the horror community that is - the fans who easily separate the light on the screen from the sun soaked shadows of the real world. Is this a generalization? Oh, without a doubt. Like any hive mind, horror fandom has a few bees that wander off the path of common sensibility and commit atrocities in the name of their darkened idols.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2014)
David Letterman’s Feud with Jay Leno: New Biography Reveals the Legendary Host was ‘Seething with Unhappiness’
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2014)
The feud between late-night hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno has been well documented, but the new biography Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night by Jason Zinoman (obtained by People) reveals more details surrounding the legendary host’s competitive and angsty nature.

“Letterman assumed one day he would get a call from Carson or the head of NBC to offer him the job . It never happened,” writes Zinoman. “Rick Ludwin, head of late-night programming at NBC, respected Letterman as a great entertainer but was skeptical that he could draw the broad swath of viewers that made up the Tonight Show audience.

Good and Bad War-Themed Movies on Veterans Day on TCM
Veterans Day movies on TCM: From 'The Sullivans' to 'Patton' (photo: George C. Scott in 'Patton') This evening, Turner Classic Movies is presenting five war or war-related films in celebration of Veterans Day. For those outside the United States, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which takes place in late May. (Scroll down to check out TCM's Veterans Day movie schedule.) It's good to be aware that in the last century alone, the U.S. has been involved in more than a dozen armed conflicts, from World War I to the invasion of Iraq, not including direct or indirect military interventions in countries as disparate as Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. As to be expected in a society that reveres people in uniform, American war movies have almost invariably glorified American soldiers even in those rare instances when they have dared to criticize the military establishment.

Sundance 2013 Review: ‘Google and the World Brain’ Comes Up Short
This month’s issue of “Wired” magazine features a very lengthy, in-depth article by Stephen Levy in which the author interviews Google’s Larry Page. It covers all of the massive projects the company is undertaking, from a car that drives itself to the Google Books project, which still aims to scan every book in existence and create a repository of human knowledge that is indexed, searchable, and portable. But as benevolent as that may seem on surface value, Ben Lewis’s Google and the World Brain takes a hard look at the Books project itself, the ideas behind it, and the proponents and opponents the company faces in the battle over digitalization of the printed world. The “World Brain” part of the title comes from a collection of essays H.G. Wells wrote in the late 1930s where he described a World Encyclopedia that would be free to everyone and full of all information. Unfortunately...

Deadline (1981): Movie Review
Review by Chris Wright

A horror writer with a "Deadline" who has lapsed reality with his writing fantasy couldn't possibly go wrong can it? Why yes it can!

In 1981 a strange Canadian horror movie came out called "Deadline". Paragon released this psychological terror that is filled with strange imagery and at times truly depressing. It has only been given the Paragon VHS release that is fairly difficult to find today. Paragon had a tendency to release unknown movies back in its heyday. They did release things uncut and had many trailers on their releases. It does deserve a re-release as it was made in 2:35:1 so a new release in its original aspect ratio would give the movie justice.

The world of Steven Lessey (Stephen Young) , horror writer and movie maker, isn't looking so great. His movies are not well received by recent critics who excoriated him at a discussion panel.
